Lin Nuo watched the quickly moving golden arc, and somehow found the strength to jump off the ground, leaping into the air to catch the coin as it came his way. At the moment he touched the coin, a warm and comforting sensation spread through his fingertips. Before Lin Nuo could savor the feeling, the coin slipped away from his fingers, aggressively smashing into his face.
“Ouch!” Lin Nuo’s forehead turned red from the impact. He touched his head, looking anxiously at Rennes. “Sir, no, Teacher, what’s going on?! Why did the coin hit me?!”
“Because you attempted to stop it,” Rennes explained. “Its current mission is to find the magical source on the wall, the magic array embedded with crystals. Any external force obstructing it during this process will face retaliation.”
Lin Nuo frowned. “And you want me to retrieve it now?”
Rennes calmly sat back in his chair, legs crossed, and succinctly replied, “Yes.”
Angry at Rennes’ nonchalant attitude, Lin Nuo snorted. He gritted his teeth, positioned himself, and prepared to pounce on the coin. By now, the coin had hovered in front of a wall for a few seconds, piercing the illusion to reveal the magical array beneath. Once exposed, the coin, seemingly conscious, leisurely left the spot and gracefully flew towards another wall like a butterfly.
Looking up, Lin Nuo crouched, ready to jump as the golden butterfly flew overhead. With a swift leap, he managed to catch the coin.
Rennes, supporting his chin with one hand, casually observed the slightly disheveled Lin Nuo. The coin’s speed decreased significantly. Lin Nuo easily held it in his hand. He looked at Rennes, a proud smile on his face. Before the smile could fully form, it froze.
The coin in his hand vibrated rapidly and forcefully flew out of his fingers, smacking his head before leisurely flying away.
Frustrated, Lin Nuo, with a swollen head, thought, It seems that no matter how fast the coin is, trying to intercept it midway will result in retaliation.
How could he get the coin back? Lin Nuo furrowed his brows, contemplating a solution. He replayed every scene, word, and action in his mind. Closing his eyes, he recalled the location of the magical array on the wall he had seen moments ago.
Left, right… Lin Nuo opened his eyes, ran to the left wall, stood straight against it, and raised his hand to block where he remembered the magical array. The coin, having pierced another illusion, was flying towards him.
When it reached the position in front of Lin Nuo’s raised hand, it neither hovered nor accelerated. Instead, the small coin, seemingly intoxicated, wobbled in place, unsure of where to fly. Lin Nuo moved his hand forward, capturing the coin in his palm. This time, the coin didn’t resist; it obediently stayed in Lin Nuo’s hand.
The sense of security the coin brought flowed through his arm. Lin Nuo sighed with relief, holding the coin and proudly waving it at Rennes. “See, I got it this time.”
Rennes nodded slightly, holding out his hand. “Good, now give me the coin.”
Startled, Lin Nuo subconsciously held onto the coin, stepping back. “Huh? I got it! Can’t I keep it?”
Rennes, with a colder expression, instructed, “Return it. Quickly. Don’t waste time.”
Lin Nuo, frightened, approached Rennes, muttering, “But you said I could touch it anytime…”
Rennes looked at him strangely. “Yes. You touched it. Return the teaching tool and continue the training.”
Lin Nuo, feeling uneasy, reluctantly placed the coin in Rennes’ hand. Rennes pulled back his hand, saying, “Now, tell me how you did it.”
Suddenly invigorated, Lin Nuo stood straight, a hint of pride in his eyes. “I noticed that you said the coin’s mission was to find the magical source on the wall, and that any external force obstructing it will be retaliated against. I also observed that it stops in front of the magic array for a few seconds during which it doesn’t move before flying to the next array. So, I speculated that it rests briefly after finding each magic array, like completing a task, and then continues with the mission. More importantly, you told me the goal of the first stage was following the coin to find a magical source. Therefore, all I had to do was wait in front of the magic array in advance and capture it during the moment of rest. Then, it wouldn’t resist.”
After this long explanation, Lin Nuo felt particularly excellent and deserving of praise. Rennes calmly asked, “How did His Highness the Prince determine the location of the magic array?”
“Uh…” Lin Nuo suddenly felt guilty. “Didn’t you just show me the distribution of the magic arrays in the room? I… I roughly remembered it.”
Rennes raised an eyebrow. “Roughly remembered?”
Feeling even guiltier, Lin Nuo unconsciously tugged at his ear, avoiding eye contact. “Well, not entirely… I have a general idea.”
Rennes raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.
Lin Nuo seemed to hear friction from deep within the walls. Suddenly getting a bad feeling, he cautiously asked, “Teacher, just now…”
Rennes, without expression, said, “I rearranged the positions of all the magic arrays. What His Highness the Prince memorized is now useless.”
Lin Nuo felt his hair stand on end. Stammering, he asked, “So, what should I do now? How can I intercept the coin again?!”
Rennes ignored him, tossing the coin into the air. “Do it fifty more times, and today’s lesson will be over.”
Fifty times?! While internally cursing the knight for being inhuman, Lin Nuo jumped up to engage in another round of coin snatching, grumbling.
Lin Nuo spent a full four hours in what was originally meant to be a two-hour lesson, finally managing to retrieve the coin fifty times. He tried every possible method, guessing and running, getting hit by the coin multiple times, and barely achieved the goal. By the final attempt, he was sitting on the ground, drenched in sweat, his white silk shirt torn at the cuffs, and bruises covering him, looking utterly disheveled.
The only comfort came from the continuous warmth the coin brought to his hand.
Rennes, who had been comfortably seated in an armchair all afternoon, finally rose and walked over to Lin Nuo. Gasping for breath, Lin Nuo looked up at the man, internally cursing him: He’s too ruthless! This damned knight is too ruthless! All the military training I’ve ever had in my life combined wasn’t as brutal as today!
He couldn’t reveal any of this on his face. He weakly raised his hand, preparing to return the coin.
Seeing this action, Rennes’s lips curved slightly, and his tone softened, “Your Highness, you can keep the teaching tool for now. Just bring it back tomorrow.”
“Really?!” Lin Nuo’s eyes lit up suddenly. He instinctively held the coin closer to his chest, hardly believing it. “Truly, I can keep it for now?”
Rennes appeared somewhat helpless. “Indeed.”
Immediately, Lin Nuo jumped up, limping towards the door, muttering, “Okay, okay. Thank you, Teacher. I’ll leave now…”
He didn’t want to spend another minute in this place with its oppressive atmosphere and this devilish training! He just wanted to rush back to his suite and admire the most adorable little coin in the world!
But as he took a couple of steps, Rennes grabbed his shoulder. “Stop.”
Lin Nuo was genuinely alarmed now.
Although Rennes didn’t use much force, the thought that it was Rennes— the man who had thrown him into a cage last night and could have executed him—holding his shoulder made Lin Nuo shiver. Every short hair on his head stood up. That terrifying feeling of ‘I’m done for’ surged through him like a tidal wave. His lips and teeth started trembling uncontrollably. Beads of cold sweat formed on his forehead.
“What’s wrong, Your Highness?” Rennes asked, puzzled.
“I… I’m, I’m not… scared…” Lin Nuo stammered.
Rennes furrowed his brows, “Are you very afraid of me?”
Lin Nuo couldn’t speak; he just shook his head like a rattle.
Rennes sighed lightly, then extended his hand towards Lin Nuo’s ear, his slender fingers sketching something in the air.
After a moment, Rennes withdrew his hand, saying, “Your Highness, please relax and follow my rhythm. Take deep breaths.”
Lin Nuo dared not ask why and just obediently complied. After three deep breaths, a strange sensation enveloped him from head to toe. It felt like a gentle spring rain, or an afternoon breeze in autumn. Incredibly tender, incredibly soothing. After this calming sensation, Lin Nuo was surprised to find that all the painful areas where the coin had hit him no longer hurt! Now, he felt as relaxed as if he had stepped out of a hot spring. He kicked his legs and felt agile, completely different from how he was limping just moments ago.
“A healing magic circle,” Rennes said. “Your Highness worked very hard today. Go back and rest.”
Lin Nuo blinked, staring at Rennes in disbelief. “Did you… heal me?”
Rennes looked at him strangely, as if not understanding why Lin Nuo asked. “Why not?”
Lin Nuo stood there, dazed for several seconds, and finally managed to say to Rennes, “Thank you,” before turning around and awkwardly making his way to the door.
