Chapter 6: Guide Association

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Lu Zexuan didn’t believe that Leonard would “fall accidentally.” Someone like Leonard, who cherished his life so much, would definitely be very cautious. When the beasts attacked the human base, he secretly hid and had all the sentinels of the base called to protect him; he spent a lot of money to introduce the most advanced treatment pods, just in case of any accidents happening to him.

How could such a person “fall accidentally from a building”?

Moreover, Leonard was not the type to be careless and accidentally slip. He feared death and was very cautious. Besides, it was in a place where he worked regularly, so this “accidental fall” was too bizarre.

Lu Zexuan looked at Yu Ran thoughtfully and asked, “You grew up here, what do you think of Leonard?”

Yu Ran looked confused, seemingly shocked by the astonishing news of the “Officer falling from a building.” It wasn’t until Lu Zexuan’s voice reached his ears that he came to his senses, hesitating as he said, “I don’t know much about Officer Leonard, and I haven’t interacted with him much… He always seemed friendly on the surface, and he used to visit the school to comfort the students.”

Just then, Mohr came out in different clothes and heard their conversation, expressing his confusion, “What happened to Leonard?”

Lu Zexuan bluntly replied, “He’s dead.”

Mohr was speechless.

This morning when Mohr left the hospital, he saw Leonard in good shape. How could someone who was perfectly fine suddenly be dead? Mohr rubbed his forehead and sighed, “This is troublesome. If I remember correctly, Leonard is a B-class sentinel, and his uncle… is some congressman, right?”

Lu Zexuan nodded expressionlessly, “Yes.”

Yu Ran, curious, asked, “But they said he fell accidentally from a building. What’s the trouble?”

Mohr looked at Yu Ran and explained, “Regardless of the cause of his death, people from the Investigation Division will definitely come to investigate. After all, he was a B-class sentinel and a base official, plus his uncle’s influence… I reckon the base will be sealed off soon. Even if people from the guide association come to pick you up, you won’t be able to leave today.”

The Investigation Division, formally known as the “Federal Sentinel and Guide Special Case Investigation Division,” was an independent and powerful institution.

Eighty percent of humans were ordinary civilians without evolved special abilities, and the security of this part of the population was managed by the “Federal Police.” However, it was different for evolved individuals; they could easily kill ordinary people. If sentinels used their special abilities to fight each other, or if guides used mental energy to control the public, the entire society would be in chaos. Therefore, to constrain evolved individuals and maintain social order, the Federation deliberately established the “Investigation Division,” specifically to investigate cases involving evolved individuals.

The head of the Investigation Division was named Zhu Tianyi, an S-class sentinel whose spirit body was a giant black spider. His evolved ability, “Spirit Body Shared Ability,” could release a large number of spider silk threads to trap people, and it was said that no one could break through his web.

He was known for his iron-fisted approach and had caught many criminal sentinels and guides in recent years, making him quite intimidating among evolved individuals.

He was usually very busy; he wouldn’t come personally, would he? Thinking of that black spider, a trace of disgust rose in Yu Ran’s heart, but he remained calm on the surface. He looked at Mohr and asked, “If the base is sealed off, should we notify the guide association to delay their arrival?”

Mohr replied, “It’s okay, they’re already on their way.” He patted Yu Ran’s shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t worry, this matter won’t affect you much. People from the Investigation Division will at most ask a few routine questions and then let you go.”

“Let’s go to the scene first,” Lu Zexuan interrupted their conversation. “Mohr, come with me.”

Mohr followed Lu Zexuan, but after a few steps, he turned back to Yu Ran. “Ranran, you go rest in my room first. I’ll go out with Major Lu.”

“Okay.”

After they left, Lu Zexuan suddenly asked in a deep voice, “Do you trust this Yu Ran so much?”

Mohr replied, “Yu Ran’s experiences are similar to mine. I lost my parents when I was sixteen and went to the guide association alone. I’ve seen some memories in his mental landscape and felt his pain… I just feel sorry for him.”

Lu Zexuan reminded him, “Memories don’t necessarily reflect reality. I’ve heard that S-class guides can create mental illusions to deceive others.”

Mohr smiled and shook his head. “Of course, I know memories can be faked, but emotions in the mental world are hard to fake. The pain I felt in Yu Ran’s mental landscape was very clear and genuine, impossible to fake. He did lose his parents and has been grieving about it, there’s no doubt about that.”

Lu Zexuan pondered for a moment. “Is that so?”

Guides understood other guides better. So, was it just his own overthinking?

Mohr looked at the sentinel beside him, puzzled. “Why? Do you doubt his background?”

Lu Zexuan said straightforwardly, “I once smelled a guide essence in the capital star that was very similar to his. It feels like I’ve met him before.”

Mohr replied, “Similar scents don’t necessarily mean they’re exactly the same, right?”

Lu Zexuan didn’t deny it. It had been too long since he smelled the essence five years ago, and he wasn’t completely sure if the scent he smelled in the heavy rain last night was identical to the guide essence he had smelled before. Plus, his friend had provided him with detailed information about the 494th graduation ball, and there were no suspicious individuals among the guides who attended the ball.

All the evidence indicated that Yu Ran was just an innocent little guide who was born on a desolate planet and awakened only last month.

But damn it, his damned sentinel intuition still left Lu Zexuan unable to completely let go of his doubts.

Lu Zexuan didn’t say anything more and quickened his pace toward the scene of the incident.

The central office building of the base was ten stories high, with a few people gathered around, pointing and discussing. Leonard’s body lay in a pool of blood; he had fallen from a height, landing headfirst, completely shattering his skull, and even his brain matter had spilled out—died quickly, even the treatment pod couldn’t save him.

Lu Zexuan didn’t disturb the scene but evacuated the onlookers and had sentinels seal off the building, waiting for the Investigation Division to handle it.

After controlling the scene, Lu Zexuan and Mohr returned to the Eagle starship together. A small spaceship happened to land from the air, docking next to the Eagle starship. The spaceship bore an exquisite silver-white wreath engraved with the distinctive emblem of the guide association.

A woman in a white gown, gracefully elegant, descended from the spaceship. After meeting Lu Zexuan’s gaze, she came over with a beaming smile and reached out her hand to Lu Zexuan, “General Lu, long time no see.”

Lu Zexuan politely greeted, “Mrs. Joseph, long time no see.”

The woman warmly asked, “How did you consider my previous suggestion? After returning to the capital star, do you want to try contacting the guide matched for you by the association?”

Lu Zexuan replied lightly, “I’m not considering marriage at the moment. Thank you for your concern.”

The woman’s gaze turned to Mohr, “And Dr. Mohr? Would you consider joining the association’s matching queue? I’ll definitely find a suitable sentinel for you.”

Mohr adjusted his glasses and smiled, repeating, “I’m also not considering marriage at the moment. Thank you for your concern.”

Mrs. Joseph rolled her eyes inwardly. As the head of the Personnel Department and director of the Sentinel-Guide Matching Center of the guide association, she really worried a lot for these singletons. Unfortunately, Lu Zexuan, this stubborn sentinel, had no interest in any of the guide profiles she sent him and insisted on staying single with his strength. As for Mohr, with his appearance of being indifferent and content, he was almost on the verge of becoming a monk.

Mrs. Joseph glanced at them and helplessly changed the subject, “What about that newly awakened guide?”

Mohr tactfully guided her, “Let me take you to him.”

At that moment, Yu Ran was lost in thought in his room. Hearing a knock on the door behind him, he got up to open it himself.

A smiling middle-aged woman stood at the door. Her golden hair was tied up in a beautiful bun behind her head, and she wore a red gemstone necklace around her neck, accentuating her fair skin and extraordinary temperament. Beside her was a cat, its fluffy and soft white fur and round blue eyes were extremely adorable.

Mrs. Joseph, from the guide association, her husband was the legion commander of the Sunday Legion, one of the few three-star generals in the Federation. She was also very capable, an A-class guide herself, and had single-handedly created the free “Sentinel-Mental Counseling” clinic on weekends, so she was highly respected among evolved individuals.

She had actually come in person? Yu Ran pretended to look blankly at her and asked Mohr behind her, “Who is this?”

Mohr introduced, “She is Mrs. Joseph, head of the Personnel Department of the guide association. She came to pick you up personally after hearing about your situation.”

Yu Ran politely greeted, “Madam.”

Mrs. Joseph carefully examined the young man in front of her. He wore simple long pants and a sweater, though he was a bit thin, his frame was well-proportioned, giving him a slender figure. His facial features were exquisite, especially his unique pupils; his right eye was black, while his left eye was red—that iris was like the most beautiful rubies.

Heterochromia? It was the first time she had seen a guide with heterochromia; it was too beautiful. Mrs. Joseph shook hands with Yu Ran eagerly, “Your name is Yu Ran, right? Mohr has told me about your situation; you’re truly a pitiful child… It’s okay, from now on, the guide association will be your home, and we will take good care of you.”

Yu Ran obediently lowered his head, “Thank you, Madam.”

Mrs. Joseph looked at Lu Zexuan, “I’ll take him back now. Everything has been arranged on the capital star.”

Lu Zexuan said, “You probably can’t leave today.”

Mohr explained, “You see, there was a sudden accident in the base, and a sentinel officer fell to his death. According to regulations, no one can leave until the matter is cleared up.”

Mrs. Joseph widened her eyes, “An officer fell? What does it have to do with our Yu Ran?” Pausing, she looked at Yu Ran and asked, “Were you at the scene when the officer fell?”

Yu Ran shook his head, “No, I wasn’t.” He glanced at Lu Zexuan and added, “I was with the general at the hospital at the time. The general can testify to this.”

Lu Zexuan said, “I can indeed testify for you.”

So, unwittingly, he had become Yu Ran’s best “absence proof” witness?

It seems like Officer Leonard may have had something to do with those behemoths attacking Planet B73, from how YR reacted to him.
If the Sentinels that completely abandoned ordinary people to protect Leonard, were from Mrs Joseph’s husband’s Legion, that won’t look good. Hope they’re not dodgy!
Thank you both for the chapter.

while it’s realistic that the sentinel is paranoid it’s a bit of a stretch for him to be so determinedly skeptical about the guide especially with everything he has going on
