Chapter 55: Escape!

Wu Chenghe was just a seventeen-year-old boy after all. Although his performance during surgery earlier didn’t match his age, his current fierce demeanor seemed very real, yet Sean still didn’t believe he would dare to act.
“Are you trying to scare me, kid?” Sean smirked, his index finger twitching slightly as he slowly charged the ray gun, “I’ll give you one more chance. Leave our leader now, or I’ll shoot!”
“Don’t… don’t kill me!” Big Balon couldn’t help but scream, “Wu Chenghe, I was wrong, I apologize to you, please leave him alone, I don’t want to die!”
Little Balon was also afraid, trembling, “Wu… Wu Chenghe, it was all our fault before, we won’t dare again, please save my brother!”
Wu Chenghe sat quietly beside the wounded, expressionless, saying nothing, and directly pressed the switch.
“Beep beep beep—” The piercing alarm immediately sounded from the vital sign monitor, indicating that the patient’s heart rate and blood pressure were rapidly dropping, about to reach the bottom line.
Wu Chenghe directly expressed his determination through action.
Sometimes, actions spoke louder than words, and seeing the patient’s ECG trending towards a flat line, Sean finally understood that Wu Chenghe wasn’t bluffing. His gray pupils contracted slightly as he raised his hands and slowly placed the ray gun on the ground. “Alright, I’ll do as you say. Don’t be impulsive, kid, it’s no fun.”
Saying that, he knelt down, hands on the ground, prostrating himself. His companion’s expression fluctuated, but eventually, he followed suit and knelt down.
The situation was temporarily under control. Wu Chenghe took a deep breath, loosening his tightly clenched fist, only to find his palms sticky and sore. It turned out he had been too tense, and his nails had pierced through the gloves, cutting his palms.
It was the first time he had taken such a risky action.
“I promise not to shoot. You can go.” Sean never expected that the little lamb he brought back would turn into a little wolf. He could only accept his misfortune and said, “Don’t touch our leader.”
Lancer showed a look of surprise, getting up and ready to leave.
“Hold on!” Wu Chenghe shouted sternly, regretting not letting Jin Xuan give this girl a beating. Perhaps a beating would have made her intelligence normal.
“W-What are you doing?” Perhaps his previous behavior was too ferocious, and Miss Lancer, who usually ignored him, stopped as if under a petrification spell, hesitating, “He let us go…”
He’s letting you go so easily? Wu Chenghe completely understood that Sean’s move was just a delay tactic. The only chip in his hand now was their leader who was still unconscious. However, he couldn’t move him alone, along with the injured person and the complex machinery. As long as he made a move, whether it was leaving the machine or accidentally harming the patient, this chip would immediately become invalid. By then, the four of them would be like fish on a chopping board, at the mercy of others.
“Unlock their handcuffs.” Wu Chenghe said to Lancer, asking Sean, “What’s the password?”
Sean narrowed his eyes, surprised by his composure, and reluctantly said the two sets of passwords. Miss Lancer wasn’t stupid after all and understood Wu Chenghe’s intention. She ran over to help unlock the electromagnetic handcuffs on the Balon siblings.
The Balon brothers were tortured by the electromagnetic handcuffs, their legs trembling, but Little Balon, being a sentinel, had stronger physical endurance. He climbed up in pain, searched Sean and his companion, removed their weapons, and aimed a ray gun at them to prevent any backlash.
Big Balon and Lancer also came to their senses, picking up their own weapons and aiming them at Sean and his companion, alongside Little Balon.
“Alright, don’t worry about them, just go.” Wu Chenghe thought that at least one of these three was reliable and not too disappointing, saying, “Take your weapons. If anyone tries to stop you, take them down.”
As soon as the words “take them down” came out, Big Balon and Lancer couldn’t help but shiver, looking at his calm expression with horror, as if they had never known him before. Little Balon, however, remained calm and said, “Let’s go together.”
“No, you go first.” Wu Chenghe dared not risk letting go of his chip. Sean and his companion were both well-trained mercenaries. Even though they had weapons, they probably wouldn’t be able to handle the two of them. If they were caught while fleeing, all their efforts would be in vain.
“What will you do if we leave?” Little Balon began to feel genuine awe for Wu Chenghe after the events just now, saying, “We can go together. There are four of us; we’re not afraid of those two.”
“No, you go first. I have a way to escape.” Wu Chenghe didn’t dare to take this risk. If it were just him and Little Balon, there might still be a chance, but with Lancer, it would be hopeless.
“Don’t waste any more time.” Wu Chenghe said in a deep voice, glancing at the Aston Medical College emblem on his chest.
Little Balon immediately understood his meaning and nodded subtly, knowing that he was supposed to go call for help. Without a word, he backed away with the gun, saying to his brother and Lancer, “Let’s go. I’ll cover the rear. You two go ahead.”
Lancer sprinted off, while Big Balon, as the son of the Defense Secretary, wasn’t so timid. Holding the gun, he retreated alongside his brother, and the three gradually disappeared into the ruins.
“Why did you let them go first?” Sean asked Wu Chenghe, lying on the ground. “Aren’t they your rivals?”
“…Because I know I can’t leave.” Wu Chenghe’s right hand still rested on the switch of the life support machine. “So let them go one by one.”
“So you were just acting cold-hearted for my benefit?” Sean slowly raised his head, looking at him with gray eyes, and actually smiled. “Your acting skills are good. I actually fell for it and didn’t dare to shoot.”
“No, I was serious. Even if you really shot and killed him, I wouldn’t compromise.” Wu Chenghe said, “For the greater good, I can only sacrifice a part.”
“You really don’t seem like a student.” Sean sighed. “I really misjudged you. I thought you were an easy opponent.”
“Hmm, people’s appearances are always deceptive.” Wu Chenghe said, glancing at the time. Two minutes had passed already. Now that the relay satellite was blocked, personal terminals couldn’t communicate. It would take more than ten minutes for them to encounter patrol officers after running out, and at least twenty minutes for reinforcements to arrive.
This time was too long. Wu Chenghe couldn’t wait. After hesitating for a moment, he decided to take a risk and try to control Sean’s consciousness cloud again. This was his only chance. Old Doves could come back at any time, and by then, it would be six against one. Even if he had a hostage, it would be difficult to escape safely.
“They’ll bring the police here soon.” Wu Chenghe met Sean’s eyes, afraid of arousing his suspicion, and could only slowly exert force, “I have a suggestion that will allow you to leave safely and ensure the safety of your leader.”
“Oh? Let’s hear it.” Sean’s eyes flickered a bit. Because of the last attack, he subconsciously resisted Wu Chenghe’s gaze but didn’t realize he was being hypnotized.
“Leave him behind, and you can leave yourselves.” Wu Chenghe said, “I’ll take care of him. When the police come later, I’ll finish the rest of his surgery and then transfer him to the hospital. This way, you can all survive, and of course, I can survive too.”
“Why should I listen to you?” Sean’s consciousness cloud surged violently, his pupils dilating and contracting, his expression changing constantly. “Even if you cure him, the police will still send him to the electric chair! It’s better to press the switch now; I’ll kill you and he can accompany you in death!”
Sean’s eyes gradually clouded with a faint red mist, a manifestation of triggered mania syndrome. Wu Chenghe did his best to suppress his mental defenses, extending mental tendrils to forcefully access his consciousness cloud. He endured the intense headache, igniting every flickering point of mania within his consciousness cloud.
“Sean!” His companion lifted his head in surprise. “Don’t let him do it!” Facing his blood-red eyes, he was immediately horrified. “God! Sean, you’re in a state of mania, damn it! Didn’t the boss say to administer the stabilizer in advance before leaving? Didn’t you take it?”
His companion’s voice momentarily brought Sean back to some semblance of clarity. He looked around confusedly at his own hands, murmuring, “What’s going on? My eyes… Why is everything red? It’s so hot…”
Wu Chenghe had never faced off against such a powerful sentinel before. Because mental tendrils were bi-directionally linked, while attacking Sean, the mania and pain of the opponent were also simultaneously transmitted to his own consciousness cloud. It made his head feel like it was splitting open, his ears ringing, and his pupils gradually constricted into thin black lines like that of a cat.
“I’ll kill you!” Sean was completely hit by his all-or-nothing mental assault, falling into a state of wanting to slaughter everything. He stood up from the ground, his blood-red eyes glaring at Wu Chenghe, his throat emitting a bear-like “roar,” hoarsely saying, “You killed our boss, you cut open his chest, and ripped out his heart… You’re a devil! I’ll kill you, avenge him!”
Wu Chenghe was forced to endure the chest pain from his terrifying aura, clutching the life support machine tightly and refusing to let go. He endured the excruciating pain in his head and continued to attack him with mental tendrils. “No, I’m not your enemy, I’m Old Dove. Look at me, Sean, the one behind you is the doctor. It’s him, he cut open the boss’s chest… Quickly, kill him, he’s going to attack you!”
Sean suddenly turned around. His companion happened to be getting up, searching for the stabilizer in the first aid kit, trying to pull him back from the state of mania. However, Sean had already been completely hypnotized by Wu Chenghe. In his ears, Wu Chenghe’s voice had completely merged with that of Old Dove, and his companion had become that weak doctor.
“I’ll kill you!” Sean suddenly pounced forward, punching his companion in the face. The companion screamed and fell, the injection gun in his hand flying out and splitting into two pieces.
“Yes, kill him. He hurt the boss, he’s our enemy!” Wu Chenghe struggled to say his last words, unable to suppress the urge to cough up blood due to overexertion of his mental strength, blood vessels in his eyes turning faintly red.
“Roar!” Sean’s mouth emitted a bear-like roar, his huge fist landing on his companion’s body, accompanied by the brutal sound of bones breaking. His companion screamed in pain, trying to fend off his punches, but was knocked down again and had his neck grabbed.
When a sentinel entered a state of mania, they would erupt with terrifying strength, their muscle strength increasing to three or four times that of their normal state. Such a Sean, even five or six sentinels might not be able to subdue him, let alone an ordinary person.
Wu Chenghe withdrew his mental tendrils, his whole body limp. His pupils gradually returned to their circular shape but remained dilated, unable to contract like they normally would. This was a lingering effect of overusing his mental powers. He was still underage, too weak to control such a massive output of brainpower.
His vision blurred, and the light areas turned into dazzling orbs, causing his eyes to ache and tears to flow uncontrollably. His ears buzzed, as if someone was thundering in his ears, and he couldn’t hear anything clearly… Wu Chenghe breathed heavily like a stranded fish, barely recognizing Sean’s location, staggering in the opposite direction. They were still fighting, their bodies colliding with the metal walls, emitting dull thuds. As long as he could run a bit further, a bit farther, he could completely escape…
Wu Chenghe felt warm liquid continuously overflowing from the back of his throat, unable to swallow it down, choking his trachea. He covered his mouth, coughing softly, afraid of being discovered by Sean. Unable to see the path ahead clearly, he relied on instinct to head towards the direction of the terminal building, inadvertently stumbling several times and feeling sharp pain in his knees.
“Pff—” With a soft sound, just as he was about to crawl out of the wreckage of the “Evolution,” a searing pain shot through his right thigh. He couldn’t control himself and fell to the ground on a fractured piece of metal. It was too painful, even more so than being blown up by a bomb in his past life. Wu Chenghe couldn’t help but let out a scream, curling up into a ball while clutching his thigh.
A large amount of blood gushed from the wound on his thigh, and he caught a whiff of the faint smell of burning protein. It was a ray gun; someone had shot through his thigh.
Sean was in a state of mania, and his companion was pinned down by him. The only person who could have shot him was one of Old Dove’s men.
Loud footsteps quickly approached, and someone grabbed his hair, lifting his upper body, “It’s him, he’s trying to escape.”
“What happened?” Old Dove’s voice, followed by his blurry silhouette appearing in Wu Chenghe’s vision. “How did he end up here? There must be something wrong with Sean. Quick! Go check, the boss is still inside!”
It was all over; they would definitely kill him. Wu Chenghe’s heart sank to the bottom as he felt completely drained of resistance, being hoisted onto Old Dove’s shoulder and taken back to where the wounded were being kept.
“Damn it! Sean’s gone into mania!” A mercenary cursed under his breath, trying to approach Sean and pull him away from his companion. Old Dove sharply stopped him, “Don’t go over there! Idiot, he’s in mania. Even if we all join forces, we’re no match for him. Use a tranquilizer gun, seven times the dosage, shoot him in the spine!”
“Understood.” The mercenary went to fulfill the order, and Old Dove dumped Wu Chenghe on the ground. He glanced at the unconscious injured person and said, “Good, the boss is still alive. What’s going on? Why was the surgery only half done?” He grabbed Wu Chenghe’s hair and shook it, “Kid, do you think you can escape from our grasp? How naive.” He harshly slapped Wu Chenghe, saying sharply, “Continue! Or I’ll burn a hole right through your chest right now!”
Wu Chenghe was knocked to the ground by the blow. Due to the intense pain, his vision became a bit clearer. He saw two mercenaries surrounding the group where Sean was, trying to shoot tranquilizer darts into his spine. Old Dove stood with two others beside the injured person, each holding two large silver-gray boxes, their hands connected by metal chains, with handcuffs fastened to their wrists.
What was that? Wu Chenghe struggled to wipe away the blood from the corner of his mouth, trying to gather the remnants of his consciousness. He noticed that they looked like four insulated boxes, medical-grade, with the Saint Martin Research Center’s logo on the bottom right corner. They were clearly containing some sort of medication or samples.
“Hey! Can you hear what I’m saying?” Old Dove noticed something was off with him and squatted down to pat his face. “What’s going on? Are you so weak that a slap knocked you out cold?”
“Don’t knock him out, we still need him to save the boss.” One of the mercenaries holding the boxes complained, “He’s so weak. You shouldn’t have shot him in the thigh earlier. Scaring him would have been enough. Now what do we do? With him injured like this, can he still perform surgery?”
“How would I know the surgery isn’t finished yet? Besides, I shot his thigh, not his hand.” Old Dove retorted, but he was also worried. He pinched Wu Chenghe’s chin, lifting his face to examine it under the light. “Are you okay, kid? Wake up and finish the surgery. Don’t think just because Sean’s gone into mania you have a chance… Wait a minute!” His pupils suddenly contracted, and he turned his head abruptly. “Go check on Sean; he might not be in mania. Someone might be attacking him mentally!”
A look of ecstatic joy appeared on Old Dove’s ferocious face. “Heavens, this can’t be real…” He pinched Wu Chenghe’s chin, took out a mini flashlight, and shone it into his eyes, carefully observing his pupils. Wu Chenghe hadn’t fully recovered from the mental attack state, so at a glance, his pupils appeared circular, but upon closer inspection, they were elliptical.
There was only one type of person in the world with vertically slitted pupils.
“Damn it, we’ve caught a guide!” Old Dove said with a trembling voice, but immediately regretted it as the two companions behind him, carrying the boxes, simultaneously exclaimed, “What? A guide? He’s a guide?”
Wu Chenghe’s mind buzzed. He violently pushed away Old Dove’s hand, enduring the excruciating pain in his thigh as he struggled to his feet and ran towards the exit. It was over; there were several sentinels here, and they wouldn’t let him go. Even if he was underage and didn’t feel compatible, they wouldn’t give up on such a rare guide.
“He’s a guide!” A mercenary shouted.
Old Dove didn’t need to be reminded. He leaped forward and caught Wu Chenghe, lifting him off the ground and dragging him into his arms. “Don’t run. If you run again, I’ll kill you!”
“Let go of me!” Wu Chenghe struggled violently, salty liquid continuously oozing from his throat, choking him with coughs.
In Old Dove’s eyes, this level of struggle was no different from that of a child. He easily restrained Wu Chenghe, holding him face to face.
“Don’t touch me! I’ll kill you!” Wu Chenghe coughed violently, blood spraying onto Old Dove’s face.
Old Dove easily pinned him down with one arm, wiping away the blood from his face with the other hand, smirking, “You’re quite something, almost got Sean into a mania and nearly killed others… How did I not realize you were a guide? Where’s your quantum beast?”
Wu Chenghe was struggling so hard that his ears felt frozen, and he could barely move. Through gritted teeth, he said, “Let go of me! Dare to touch me, and I promise you’ll regret it for the rest of your life!”
“Don’t talk tough; if you’ve got any skills, show them now.” Old Dove chuckled, “Otherwise, in a while, you won’t have a say, and you’ll be begging me to… well, you know.”
Wu Chenghe couldn’t resist, spitting a mouthful of blood mixed saliva onto Old Dove’s face. “Get lost!”
Old Dove grabbed his forehead, forcing him to tilt his chin up, exposing his neck. Wu Chenghe’s throat emitted a painful whimper as he struggled fiercely but couldn’t match Old Dove’s terrifying strength. Old Dove tore open his collar, unbuttoned his shirt, and Wu Chenghe’s slender Adam’s apple was immediately exposed to the cold air. Due to anger and fear, his skin trembled slightly, giving it a sandy texture under the light, which was unsettling.
“This isn’t fair, Old Dove.” A mercenary came forward, grabbing his wrist and hoarsely saying, “He was brought by Sean. Even if Sean’s in mania, you shouldn’t have taken him. He belongs to all of us.”
“Right.” Another approached. “There are rules; all spoils belong to the boss. Who do you think you are, trying to claim him? Are we all rookies to you?”
“What are you going to do? Want to fight me for him?” Old Dove squinted, his fierce gaze sweeping over them both. “The boss is unconscious. We don’t even know if he’ll make it through this ordeal. Do we bring him back and split him up, or do we slice him up for everyone?”
“At least you can’t mark him here!” The mercenary said firmly. “Either we have a fair duel, or whoever has the highest compatibility gets him. Old Dove, you can’t break the rules.”
The two mercenaries stared at him, knowing what he said was true, but neither wanted to see such a rare guide be claimed by a companion. Just as they hesitated, they suddenly heard a soft “Pff—”
Old Dove’s tall figure suddenly froze, and he collapsed to the ground, a large amount of blood spurting from his temple, forming a pool of red on the ground.
“Sniper!” The mercenaries exclaimed in horror.
