Old Dove lay dead on the ground, his eyes wide open as if he hadn’t understood what had happened until his last moment. The two mercenaries turned pale, immediately drew out their weapons, and swiftly flashed to cover.
Wu Chenghe fell onto Old Dove, feeling his arm loosen. He quickly disentangled himself, scrambling away to a large crack in the nearby metallic ground, panting heavily.
“Ah!” one of the mercenaries, slower in his movements, cried out as if he had been hit. He huddled tightly in the shadowy corner, saying, “Damn it, where’s that sniper?”
“I don’t know, he’s moving. His movements were too fast, I couldn’t get a clear fix!” another replied, “Damn it, he’s a sentinel, I could sense his cloud… Ah!” Just as he finished speaking, he too was hit, a streak of blood spraying from the darkness, leaving a stark red mark on the metal wall.
“It’s the cops!” the medic, who had been half-killed by Sean earlier, exclaimed. Finally saved by his companions, he hid behind a collapsed metal pillar, his face bruised and swollen, “Sean and I just caught three medical students, fell into that guide’s trap, and were forced to let them go. They must have called for backup.”
“Damn it! Has Sean gone crazy? Why didn’t he finish them off?” The mercenary with the tranquilizer gun finally subdued Sean, dragging his burly body into a gap under a row of seats.
“It’s complicated, all because of that guide, he was too troublesome…” the medic said, changing position gradually, edging closer, “Let’s retreat, the situation was too dire. We couldn’t drag this out any longer. At least we had got what we came for, we could explain to the buyers.”
“What about Old Dove? And the boss and Sean?” the mercenary with the tranquilizer gun asked.
“Old Dove’s already dead, the sniper shot through his head,” the injured mercenary said, injecting painkillers into his upper arm, “The boss is hopeless now, in that condition, we can only leave him here. The cops won’t let him die, they’d definitely save him and send him to court. We could hijack the prison later, we have done it before anyway. We have to find a way to take Sean with us.”
“That’s the only way.” The mercenary closest to Wu Chenghe asked, “What about the guide? Take him with us or eliminate him?”
No one answered, everyone hesitated. The guide was too valuable, they all needed him, but they already had Sean, who was now unconscious and dragging another casualty would definitely be a burden.
“Let’s eliminate him, there were too many of us, and you can’t split him anyway, it’s better to keep peace among brothers.” The medic, who was just an ordinary person and didn’t care about having a guide, said. As he spoke, his head moved slightly, revealing a bit of his forehead from the cover he was hiding behind. As a result, as soon as he finished speaking, there was a light “pop,” and a blood flower burst from his head.
With a loud “thud,” his body fell straight down, his voice abruptly stopped.
“Damn it! He’s dead!” The mercenary with the tranquilizer gun cursed, “Forget about that guide, we have to figure out how to take out that sniper first, otherwise, none of us will make it out.” He cautiously looked outside the cover, except for the heavily injured boss, unconscious Sean, and Old Dove and the medic who had been shot in the head, there were only three of the seven people on this mission left with combat capability, and two of them were injured. He gritted his teeth and said, “According to the rules, I’ll be the bait, you guys take care of that guy.”
At this time, someone had to run out as bait to lure the sniper to shoot again. Only then could the rest of the team determine the opponent’s position and annihilate them in one fell swoop. This dangerous role could only be done by the fastest-acting person to have any chance of surviving.
“Okay.” The other two mercenaries agreed simultaneously.
The mercenary with the tranquilizer gun took a deep breath and suddenly jumped up from his hiding place, running at an astonishing speed towards another cover three meters away. Almost as soon as he got up, the sniper fired his gun, the laser gun following his footsteps with continuous shots, leaving a row of charred holes in the metal ground.
At the same time, the two injured mercenaries also stood up from their corner, aiming in the direction of the laser and firing continuously into the darkness.
“Ah!” The baiting mercenary only ran two meters before being hit in the back, the laser piercing through his chest, bursting out a cloud of blood mist. He fell forward, twitching on the ground. The sniper then fired another shot at the back of his head, finishing him off completely.
The remaining two were completely intimidated by the precise shooting and ruthless tactics of the sniper. The opponent’s speed was too fast, their marksmanship, even among active-duty soldiers, was considered excellent, but in front of the opponent, they were as slow as snails crawling. Not to mention hitting the body, they couldn’t even touch the opponent’s shadow!
Encountering such an opponent, they felt a sense of impending doom, quickly hiding in the shadows, shrinking, trembling with fear, no longer caring about that rare guide.
As the gunfire ceased, heavy footsteps approached from the darkness in the distance. It was that god-like sniper deliberately making heavy steps, as if to intimidate them, letting them know that the person who controlled their life and death was about to pass judgment on their crimes.
A tall and slender man emerged from the darkness, wearing a dark green major’s uniform, his long hair tied behind his head, holding a very ordinary medium-sized laser gun in his hand, his face covered, only revealing a pair of icy black eyes, shining in the darkness.
Never would they have thought that he would use such an inconspicuous gun to take out the three of them. What kind of person could achieve such accuracy and lethality with this kind of gun? The two surviving mercenaries looked at him in horror, as if seeing the judge of their lives.
“Roar!” A huge Barbary lion emerged from behind him, its fierce eyes staring at the trembling quantum beast of the mercenaries, its golden-brown mane slightly swaying, majestic and imposing.
Jin Xuan realized something was amiss about fifteen minutes ago.
It had been four or five hours since he last met with Wu Chenghe, during which he had been busy in the port control room. The hacker who infiltrated the main control system was very skilled, using a virus with self-cleaning functions, and made several layers of cover. They couldn’t figure out if it was the system delay caused by the virus invasion or if it was really being invaded by the virus.
A large amount of data needed to be sorted out one by one, it didn’t require much technical skill, but it was extremely time-consuming. Jin Xuan and the people from the Federal Information Security Bureau were busy against time, until the alarm set by the personal terminal sounded, reminding him that it was time to eat.
The relay satellite was blocked, the terminal couldn’t be contacted, Jin Xuan opened the short-distance tracking system, using the badge pinned to Wu Chenghe’s chest to locate his position, and suddenly felt something was strange – it had been several hours, why was he still there?
During a tea break earlier, Jin Xuan had located Wu Chenghe and found him in the ruins of a dock. At the time, he thought the police had found some casualties and they had gone to rescue them, but why hadn’t his position changed for so long?
Checking the map, it was the place where the “Evolution” had crashed, the environment was extremely harsh, if survivors were found, they should have been immediately transported back to Terminal 1 for treatment, there was no reason for doctors to stay there for several hours.
“I’ll be out for a while.” A faint unease surged in Jin Xuan’s heart as he informed the person in charge of the security bureau, grabbed some food and water, and decided to go find Wu Chenghe. As a precaution, he took a gun with him before he left.
Outside was still smoky and chaotic, with smoke and flames everywhere, firefighters were still busy. Jin Xuan, accompanied by the Barbary lion, walked through the rescue area, following the guidance of the positioning map to the crash site of the “Evolution.” Just as he crossed over a beam, he suddenly heard a faint “pop.”
Gunfire! Jin Xuan’s senses were extremely keen, and he immediately recognized the sound of a laser gun firing, his expression changing, he quickened his pace towards the ruins.
Approaching the location where the gunfire had just come from, he suppressed his aura, lightened his footsteps, and even half-held his breath. He heard a rough voice from inside shouting, “Catch him, he’s a guide!”
Guide? Jin Xuan’s hands and feet turned cold instantly. Wu Chenghe’s in trouble!
The Barbary lion and he were mentally connected, and he immediately wanted to rush in. Jin Xuan grabbed its mane, communicating through their shared consciousness, “Don’t be impulsive, let’s first assess the situation and see how many of them there are.”
The lion restrained its anger and worry, taking a step back. Its usually dull face showed a rare fierceness, its teeth uncontrollably bared, the gums trembling with hatred.
Jin Xuan suppressed the burning sensation of anxiety and stealthily entered the wreckage of the “Evolution” from another damaged spot. He immediately took out the Native American who was holding Wu Chenghe, then proceeded to take out the remaining two mercenaries one by one.
Moving with intimidating steps, he approached the hiding place of the last two survivors. The air was thick with the smell of blood from the deceased. But at the same time, he also caught a familiar scent, clear, clean, with a hint of blood. It was Wu Chenghe’s scent, he was injured!
Blood rushed to Jin Xuan’s head, he saw a foot, wearing the standard soft-soled boots of Aston Medical College, with dark blue school trousers. The deep red blood was flowing down from the wound, dripping onto the metal floor.
“Wu Chenghe!” Jin Xuan roared, rushing forward like a released arrow, exuding an aura of consuming everything.
The mercenary nearest to him was overwhelmed by his powerful pressure, completely breaking down. He jumped out of hiding with his gun, crazily shouting, and firing aimlessly, “Ah ah ah!!!”
Jin Xuan’s face turned as cold as ice. Without even turning his head, he casually shot him through the forehead. The shouting stopped abruptly, the mercenary was shot in the head and fell to the ground, dead.
“Jin… Jin Xuan?” Wu Chenghe’s weak voice came from the shadows, “Is… is that you?” Even in his severely injured state, he still recognized Jin Xuan’s footsteps. He was the only sentinel who had marked him but relinquished possession, the only man who appeared in front of him when his life was in danger.
“Wu Chenghe?!” Jin Xuan quickly rushed to him, carefully pulling him out from the crevice where he was hiding. Wu Chenghe looked extremely miserable, his eyes were dull, his right cheek swollen, a large patch of it, with five black fingerprints. There were light bloodstains in the corners of his eyes, blood on his lips and chin, his collar was torn open, exposing half of his chest, and the wounds on his legs were particularly severe, with the laser piercing through his thigh, a large amount of blood gushing from the wound.
“God! Oh my God…” He had been blocked by Old Dove before, then hid in the crevice after the gunfire broke out. Jin Xuan didn’t see clearly, but now, holding his weak body, his hands were trembling with pain, “How could this happen? Why did I let you go alone… My God!”
Jin Xuan’s pride in his composure completely collapsed in front of his severely injured lover. Wu Chenghe’s vision was impaired, he couldn’t see Jin Xuan’s face clearly, but his confused consciousness sensed his regret and panic. He groped and gently grabbed Jin Xuan’s hand, weakly saying, “D-don’t… don’t panic, I’m fine, calm down… Get the first aid kit, for my leg, painkiller injection.”
He was in great pain, his breath weak, and his teeth were trembling as he spoke. But Jin Xuan immediately understood what he meant, forcing himself to calm down and carrying him to a clean flat ground, he tore open a first aid kit from the body of the medic who he had shot earlier, searching for medications and bandages.
“Roar…” The Barbary lion, too, was horrified by Wu Chenghe’s condition, anxiously circling around them, emitting low growls. It approached Wu Chenghe’s head and nudged his right ear with its nose, the designated spot for Wu Chenghe’s quantum beast.
“Mmm, don’t be afraid, I’m fine, it’s fine too,” Wu Chenghe murmured, half-conscious. He felt a sharp pain from the wound on his leg, followed by numbness spreading through his entire right leg. He knew Jin Xuan had injected him with a painkiller. He forced a reassuring smile at the lion. The Barbary lion emitted a mournful whimper, rubbing its head against his right arm and blinking, its eyes moist.
“Don’t talk, rest for a while,” Jin Xuan said as he tended to the wound on Wu Chenghe’s thigh. He gently wiped his face with a cotton ball soaked in saline solution. Noticing his fixed pupils, maintaining an oval shape but not contracting, Jin Xuan was puzzled. He exclaimed, “Psychic trauma… Did you use your psychic powers to attack?”
“Yeah,” Wu Chenghe murmured softly, “I almost… almost got away.”
His pupils were large and black, a clear sign of severe brain injury. Jin Xuan’s heart felt like it was breaking. He gently brushed aside Wu Chenghe’s bangs and kissed his cheek, saying, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have left you alone. I should have stayed with you.”
“Don’t… don’t be silly, we both have our own jobs, this is just… just an accident…” Wu Chenghe’s heart felt warm. Compared to the fear and anxiety of the previous few hours, lying in Jin Xuan’s arms at this moment felt like heaven.
“Roar!” Suddenly, the Barbary lion raised its head and turned sharply, looking toward the side. The only surviving mercenary took advantage of Jin Xuan’s attention on helping Wu Chenghe and stealthily stood up from his hiding place. He crept to a broken metal wall nearby, slipped into a narrow crack, and fled deeper into the wreckage.
Injured and unable to run fast, Jin Xuan didn’t look back. He simply sent a signal to the Barbary lion through their mental connection, “Kill!”
“Roar!” The Barbary lion obeyed the command, with a graceful leap, it crossed the debris and chased after the mercenary through the crack. A few seconds later, intense sounds of struggle emanated from deep within the wreckage, occasionally interspersed with the lion’s roar and the mercenary’s pitiful cries.
Wu Chenghe’s hearing was impaired, unable to hear the battle over there. He felt slightly worried about the seemingly foolish lion’s fighting ability, staring at the crack. Jin Xuan touched his sweaty hair, comforting him, “Don’t worry, when it fights, it’s even more ferocious than me.”
Wu Chenghe felt relieved, giving Jin Xuan a weak smile. Jin Xuan touched his right ear and asked, “Is your quantum beast okay?”
The master and the quantum beast were mentally connected, so if the master’s mind was injured, the quantum beast would also be affected.
“It… It hasn’t moved in a long time,” Wu Chenghe replied, also feeling a bit concerned. He tilted his head, indicating for Jin Xuan to take down little Light Bulb.
“I’ll take a look,” Jin Xuan said as he brushed aside the broken hair on Wu Chenghe’s temple. His expression suddenly became very surprised. “Ah! It’s cocooning!” he exclaimed, taking the object from behind Wu Chenghe’s ear and showing it to him. “Look, it’s cocooning. You’re going to mature!”
Wu Chenghe blinked, trying to focus his vision on Jin Xuan’s hand. The usually soft and squishy caterpillar had indeed transformed into a round and chubby cocoon, slightly larger at one end than the other. Originally transparent, after Jin Xuan removed it, the top gradually emitted a faint orange-red color, giving off a soft glow like an elliptical fluorescent ball.
“Ah, it really cocooned,” Wu Chenghe said, feeling a bit happy but also a bit surprised. The caterpillar, accustomed to being a caterpillar, suddenly had to become a butterfly, which was somewhat disappointing.
“Roar!!!” Suddenly, from deep within the wreckage, came an angry roar from the Barbary lion. It was even louder than when it fought with the gray wolf earlier, and for some reason, it seemed to carry a hint of panic.
“Someone’s coming!” Jin Xuan sensed the lion’s change in mood, his face turning pale. He whispered, “It’s a guide!”
Wu Chenghe was startled. “A guide?”
Before he could finish his sentence, a heart-wrenching scream echoed from nearby, “Aaahhh!!!” A few seconds later, the mercenary who had fled earlier came back from the crack, his eyes, nostrils, and mouth bleeding profusely, blood pouring out of his ears as well. A majestic gray wolf followed behind him, equally frenzied, its throat emitting a desperate howl.
“Ah! Ah!” The mercenary paid no attention to Jin Xuan and Wu Chenghe, rushing toward them. Suddenly, he slammed his head against a metal wall, once, twice, thrice… until his brain matter splattered out, collapsing to the ground, dead. His gray wolf also fell to the ground, dead on his chest.
“Mania… he’s being controlled!” Jin Xuan held Wu Chenghe tightly, his hands trembling slightly. “Someone’s attacking him, it’s a guide, a powerful guide!”
“Roar!” The Barbary lion retreated from the crack, step by step, its movements slow. It lowered its head, raised its shoulders, bared its white, sharp teeth menacingly, emitting threatening growls from its mouth. Jin Xuan stared at the direction it was staring at without blinking. After a while, a tall figure emerged from the crack.
It was an incredibly powerful guide, with exceptionally strong psychic powers. Even though he hadn’t directed any power towards them yet, the aura emanating from him was enough to make the Barbary lion panic.
“Dean Mu!” Jin Xuan was stunned, unable to believe his eyes. The man before him was tall and thin, with a cold and refined face, dressed in simple black clothes. How could it be Mu?
But the cold and domineering aura of a guide emanating from him left Jin Xuan puzzled. How could Mu be a guide? He was almost fifty years old. How could a fifty-year-old guide go unnoticed in a place as densely populated as the medical school for decades?
Mu stopped a few meters away from where the mercenary had fallen, lifted his chin with his toe, confirming his death, and then walked towards Jin Xuan.
“Roar!” Despite Mu’s powerful psychic power pressing it down, the Barbary lion remained faithful, trembling on all fours but still standing in front of Jin Xuan and Wu Chenghe, baring its teeth and growling menacingly.
Stopping a few meters away from them, Mu looked at Jin Xuan’s right hand in surprise. The cocoon made by little Light Bulb lay in his palm, emitting a soft glow like a fluorescent ball.
“Cocooned,” he said to himself, his tone unexpectedly relieved. “A healthy Icarus butterfly.”
A loud noise resounded in Wu Chenghe’s mind. Although he had long suspected that Mu might be a guide, revealing this secret in such a situation was still shocking. He suddenly gasped, smelling the strong scent of blood and brain matter and hearing the lion’s growls. A terrifying thought arose in his mind—Mu had hidden his identity for forty-nine years. Once he unleashed his power, there would be no survivors. He and Jin Xuan were in grave danger.
Indeed, as soon as Mu finished speaking, a powerful psychic force immediately surged over like a mountain overwhelming the sea, causing Wu Chenghe to almost suffocate. Instinctively, he protected Jin Xuan in front of him, saying, “Stop, Dean, don’t…”
Jin Xuan, who was holding him from behind, suddenly trembled violently, emitting a painful grating sound from his throat. His lion also shook violently, and his front legs could not support him, kneeling to the ground.
Wu Chenghe was horrified. He was attacking Jin Xuan! The thought of the mercenary whose head was smashed and died on the ground made Wu Chenghe’s blood run cold. He struggled to sit up, although he knew he was no match for Mu, not even one percent, still he concentrated the remaining power of his consciousness, extending two weak mental tendrils toward Mu’s consciousness cloud.
“Ah!” Mu was greatly surprised. He never thought he would use this suicidal method to attack him. He quickly withdrew his mental tendrils to block him. The consciousnesses of the two guides collided, causing chaotic vibrations in the higher-dimensional space.
Wu Chenghe’s final blow was already exhausted. He fell back weakly and collapsed to the ground. In a daze, he saw a bright orange shadow flying up from Mu’s shoulder.
It was an extremely beautiful butterfly, only the size of a ping pong ball, with bright orange wings adorned with beautiful patterns outlined by orange-red fine lines. It emitted a faint fluorescence, like sunlight falling from the sky, dazzling and magnificent, extremely beautiful and domineering.
That was Mu’s quantum beast. It fluttered in the air, then landed back on his shoulder, gradually turning transparent, disappearing without a trace.
Wu Chenghe trembled all over, barely conscious. He saw Mu coming over, and heard his astonished, angry, and worried voice in his ears, “Are you crazy? Why attack me? Heavens! Do you not want your brain anymore?”
“Dean…” Wu Chenghe felt his concern and kindness towards him. He knew Mu’s target was only Jin Xuan, so he tightly held Jin Xuan’s hand and pleaded, “Dean, please don’t hurt him. He won’t, won’t say anything.” Mu remained silent. Wu Chenghe was anxious and grasped Jin Xuan’s hand tightly, urging, “You, you say! Say you won’t reveal this secret, quickly!”
Jin Xuan never expected that Mu was actually a Morpho butterfly guide. For some reason, he suddenly thought of his brother, the person he had been searching for and waiting for…
“I won’t reveal your secret,” Jin Xuan said as a faint red mist rose in his eyes due to the mental attack. He held Wu Chenghe’s hand tightly, trying hard to remain calm, and said, “Dean, I swear.”
“Yes, you swear,” Wu Chenghe, afraid that Mu wouldn’t believe him, struggled and said, “You swear by your life… and mine!”
“Stop it,” Mu sighed almost inaudibly, “I understand.”
He took a step back, withdrew the mental attack. Jin Xuan felt relieved and collapsed on the ground, panting heavily. Feeling the pressure disappear, Wu Chenghe’s mind relaxed completely and he passed out.
“We need to take him to the medical facility immediately,” Mu said, “He has suffered severe mental trauma, and it’s just at the stage of adulthood. It could leave lasting effects.”
Jin Xuan regained some strength and injected himself with a balancer, then carried the unconscious Wu Chenghe horizontally. Mu removed the ray gun from his waist and checked on the several mercenaries, confirming that they were all dead. He shot one in the head, leaving only the one with the abdomen cut open as evidence for the police.
Then, Mu found the metal boxes stolen by the mercenaries, dragged them to flat ground, and entered the password to open them. Inside were rows of vials, without labels, and it was impossible to tell what they were. Mu roughly counted them, then poured a bottle of liquid from his pocket onto them. Soon, all the vials emitted thick smoke, evaporating completely, leaving no residue.
“Let’s go,” Mu looked at Jin Xuan with a complicated expression, then glanced at Wu Chenghe in his arms, his brow furrowed. After a pause, he walked away from the wreckage. As he passed Jin Xuan, he warned in a low but extremely sinister voice, “Remember the oath you made, Lieutenant Colonel Jin. Otherwise, you won’t have to wait for divine punishment. I’ll make you die in a very, very, very ugly way.”

So enjoyed all these chapters🥰
Thank you ♥️
Mu has obviously realised that JX and WC are going to be together.
I have a feeling WC might end up even more powerful than him.
Edit: I think Mu and Jin Zhie were together once; I wonder what happened.
