Origin of the Surname "You":
The surname "You" has its roots in an official position from the Zhou Dynasty. The title "Youyou" referred to a minor palace official responsible for managing various types of gardens, including flower gardens, vegetable gardens, orchards, and acreage. This role was similar to that of a gatekeeper, overseeing the palace gates, handling arrivals and departures, and reporting on activities.
The position was part of the Tianguanfusi, as described in the classic text "Zhou Li·Tianguan": "At each gate of the royal palace, there are four officials, including Youyou."
Descendants of these officials sometimes adopted their ancestors' titles or occupations as their surnames, which led to the names Youyou and Huanren.
