Chapter 27: Li Sinian’s new farm was hiring

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Zheng Ming’s family hadn’t been well-off—in fact, it was safe to say things were rather tough.

His father scraped together income through odd jobs, while his mother worked as a waitress at a high-end hotel. The environment was nice enough, but the pay was far from generous.

So when Zheng Ming’s mother heard Li Sinian mention that their farm was hiring—and the wages were more than decent—she was immediately intrigued.

Still, being intrigued was one thing; there were questions that needed answers first.

Like…

“Xiao Li,” she asked cautiously, “your little restaurant’s only been open a few days. How come you’re suddenly talking about opening a chain? Doesn’t that take a ton of startup money? Do you… do you really have that kind of cash?”

Li Sinian smiled. “I heard from Zheng Ming that you’ve lived in Mulin Village for quite a few years now. Do you remember the old lady who used to live in the house I’m renting now?”

Zheng’s mother nodded.

“Then you probably also remember how, during the holidays, there were always luxury cars parked outside her door, right?”

She nodded again, Li Sinian’s words tugging at her memory.

That’s right—back when Zheng Ming was still little, there had been an old woman living in that courtyard. She hadn’t seemed much different from any other elderly villager at first glance. But during holidays, the difference became clear.

Other grandmas might have Volkswagens in front of their homes. This one? Cars so fancy you couldn’t even name them, but one look and you knew they were expensive.

And the people who stepped out of those cars were different too—adults dressed in perfectly tailored suits, kids in name-brand athletic gear. They looked completely out of place in the village.

After the old woman passed away, the fancy cars stopped showing up. The people who looked rich never came around again.

Years had gone by since then. The adults were probably aging now, the kids grown up.

And then it clicked—Li Sinian was approachable, the friendly kind who acted like any other neighbor. She’d forgotten that the young man sitting in front of her now… was once the designer-clad kid stepping out of one of those luxury cars.

Watching the flicker of realization on her face, Li Sinian spoke up again, just at the right moment. “There were some conflicts with my family, so now I’m starting a business with some friends. We want to open a restaurant chain.”

“I really need the village’s growing expertise—well, not even expertise exactly, just that the vegetables grown around here taste so much better than the ones you can buy outside. To keep the flavors just right, I need your help.”

“As for money, you don’t need to worry. I’ve been saving since I was little. It’s added up to quite a bit over the years.”

“And if you agree to help at my farm, I’ll pay you a full year’s salary in advance. That way, even if the business fails, you won’t have worked for nothing.”

Zheng’s mother asked, “And how much is a year’s salary?”

“Three hundred thousand,” Li Sinian replied with a calm smile. “Of course, if you think that’s not enough, we can always discuss further.”

Her mouth fell open. “Th-three hundred thousand?”

She started counting on her fingers. “Three hundred thousand a year, divided by twelve months… That’s twenty-five thousand a month?!”

“That’s right,” Li Sinian nodded. “There’ll be bonuses during the holidays, and don’t worry about insurance or anything—our company is already registered, and once the contract is signed, we’ll handle all of that for you.”

“In other words, your actual monthly take-home pay will be twenty-five thousand.”

Zheng’s mother was stunned into silence.

Suzhou was a third-tier city. The average salary hovered around four thousand, and breaking into five figures usually meant a high-paying job—senior sales, maybe management.

Now they were being offered twenty-five grand a month… for farming?

Li Sinian didn’t waste any more words. He simply pulled out a contract and slid it across the table.

“This is a standard labor contract we’ve already prepared. You can look it over, and if you’re happy with it, once you sign, our finance department will deposit the money into your account within twenty-four hours.”

The contract wasn’t thick. Zheng’s mother flipped through it, clearly tempted, but she still didn’t sign.

“Changing jobs isn’t a small matter,” she said. “And I’ve still got a contract with the hotel. I’d like to wait until my husband’s back and talk it through with him properly.”

“Of course,” Li Sinian said, understanding. He pushed a small stack of cash across the table. “But please accept this—for the vegetables I’m buying today. And I have one more favor to ask.”

“What kind of favor?”

“The restaurant’s business has picked up a lot lately, and the vegetables I grow aren’t nearly enough,” he explained. “To keep things going, I’ll probably have to go door-to-door asking neighbors if they’re willing to sell me their homegrown produce.”

Zheng’s mother couldn’t help but laugh to herself. You call that shameless? More like going door-to-door handing out free money. People will probably be lining up for you.

She smiled and said, “That’s no trouble. I’ll go with you. But I’m not taking money for it. Helping out a neighbor like this—taking payment would feel wrong.”

She insisted, and since she wouldn’t budge, Li Sinian didn’t press the issue.

Mrs. Zheng took out all the vegetables, meat, and whatever else they had left at home and stuffed it into Li Sinian’s hands before following him as he made his rounds from the village entrance.

Just as she expected, Li Sinian was warmly welcomed at every household he visited, especially since he brought cash with him.

When he pulled out his labor contracts, the villagers liked him even more.

That day, they bought vegetables from ten households—enough to supply the restaurant for about two days. Li Sinian didn’t want to overdo it; if they bought too much, the ingredients wouldn’t stay fresh even in the fridge. So he limited it to ten homes.

They passed by the Wang family’s house during their rounds. The Wangs were one of only two families in the village still relying on farming to make a living, but they didn’t stop there.

For one, the Wang family owned a lot of land—earning around 300,000 yuan a year from grain and vegetables alone. A labor contract wasn’t much of a lure for them. And second, their crops weren’t what Li Sinian needed.

Once the collection was done, Li Sinian called someone from the restaurant to come pick everything up.

Two of the families they visited had shown great interest in the labor contract and signed on the spot. Li Sinian needed to send those contracts over to Jiang Rongxuan.

Right now, Jiang Rongxuan and Ma Chi were mainly handling company operations, and entering contracts into the system was still something only they could do.

The village wasn’t that big, and by late afternoon, news of Li Sinian going door-to-door buying vegetables had already spread like wildfire.

But what really had the villagers buzzing was the news that Li Sinian’s new farm was hiring.

I love how Li Si Nian being generous in buying the vegetables and farming hiring contracts. That’s how business should be to be long lasting. It should be profitable for both sides. The employees will be happy and have their life improved. In the end, the village will growing too.
