Chapter 15: Three Laws

Jiang Rong squatted in front of the Eyries cactus, staring at the raised concrete thoughtfully. The concrete, only a dozen centimeters thick, was easily pushed aside. Is the foundation of his house still okay?
Seeing Jiang Rong squatting in front of it, the Eyries cactus silently moved a large flower from the yard to in front of Jiang Rong. “Master Jiang~”
Jiang Rong, caught off guard, was hit in the face by the flower, covered in white pollen. After wiping the pollen off his face, Jiang Rong decided to set some rules with the Eyries cactus. But before setting those rules, he needed to give the Eyries cactus a name. After wiping the pollen off his face, Jiang Rong contemplated, “Let me give you a name, okay?”
The small spines on the Eyries cactus rubbed together, making a rustling sound. In Jiang Rong’s mind, a ball of light bounced around. “Master Jiang, Master Jiang~”
After a moment of thought, Jiang Rong spoke up, “Do you like the name ‘Qiuqiu’?”
The Eyries cactus obviously didn’t like the name. It resisted and twisted its body, and the thorns on its trunk shot out and pierced the exterior insulation layer of the house.
Jiang Rong tried several other names like “Xiao Lu,” “Hua Hua,” and “Qing Qing,” but the Eyries cactus ruthlessly rejected them all. Soon, the insulation layer of Jiang Rong’s house was covered in yellow thorns.
Just as Jiang Rong was still thinking, Jiang Xiaoheng’s cry came from inside the yard, “Wuwuwu, Dad, Dad!”
Jiang Rong’s heart raced. Had his son been pricked by the Eyries cactus? He quickly ran towards the yard, shouting, “Hey, Dad’s here, Dad’s here!” and silently commanded the Eyries cactus not to prick people indiscriminately.
When he arrived in the yard, he saw his son standing barefoot, holding a doll. Jiang Xiaoheng’s clothes were wrinkled, his shoulders exposed from the oversized neckline. He was crying loudly, tears streaming down his face, his cheeks flushed with emotion.
In Jiang Rong’s memory, Jiang Xiaoheng’s cries were never this loud. Hearing him cry so bitterly now, Jiang Rong rushed over and picked him up. “Where does it hurt? Where?”
Jiang Xiaoheng’s cries stopped abruptly as he hugged Jiang Rong tightly, tears still in his eyes. “Dad!”
Hot tears slid down Jiang Rong’s neck as Jiang Xiaoheng’s voice trembled. “I thought, I thought Dad was gone…”
Jiang Rong kissed his son’s soft hair. “Dad is right here, I won’t go anywhere.” He blamed himself. His son was still in distress, and he had left him alone in the bedroom. His son must have been terrified.
While Jiang Xiaoheng was still sobbing, Jiang Rong carefully checked his son’s body. Seeing that his son was unharmed, he felt relieved. But his son’s habit of not wearing shoes when going out had resurfaced. He rubbed his son’s feet, which were indeed very warm.
Just as Jiang Rong was about to take his son back to the bedroom, a swooshing sound came from behind. Turning around, he saw a huge red flower poking over the wall behind them.
Jiang Xiaoheng’s eyes widened in surprise, forgetting to cry. His gaze lingered on the enormous flower for a while before finally noticing the Eyries cactus wriggling on the wall.
Jiang Rong hesitated. He hadn’t figured out how to explain the crisis to his son, about the mutated animals and plants. The mutated Eyries cactus unexpectedly revealed itself to his son.
Just as Jiang Rong thought his son would scream in fear, Jiang Xiaoheng’s face lit up with excitement. Pointing in the direction of the Eyries cactus, he shouted, “Dad, look, it’s a little fairy!” Wiping his face, Jiang Xiaoheng exclaimed, “Little Fairy is blooming, Dad, look!”
The thorns all over the Eyries cactus rustled, and its huge body twisted. In Jiang Rong’s mind, he heard its proud voice, “Master Jiang, Master Jiang~ There’s a problem~”
It seemed to really like this name. Jiang Rong was speechless. Jiang Xiaoheng had cried too many times recently, and small cracks appeared on his fair face. After carefully applying moisturizer to his face, his son returned to his usual appearance.
Jiang Rong was a bit puzzled. As he bent down to put sandals on his son, he asked, “Xiaoheng, why do you call the Eyries cactus outside ‘little fairy’?”
Taking a sip of milk, Jiang Xiaoheng innocently tilted his head, “The auntie selling flowers said so, Dad, did you forget?”
Upon careful recollection, it seemed to be true. When he and his son were shopping at the supermarket, his son was attracted by the cacti. Later, on the recommendation of the saleswoman, he chose the smallest Eyries cactus. There was even a label on the Eyries cactus pot, with the words ‘little fairy’ written on it. Jiang Rong had pointed to these words and read them to his son.
Jiang Rong always thought those labels were randomly put on, so he didn’t pay much attention to them. He didn’t expect his son to remember the name of the Eyries cactus.
Thinking about how his son hadn’t been eating or sleeping well these days, Jiang Rong patted his son’s head. “Be good, Dad will go outside and talk to Little Fairy for a while. You stay at home and play with Lele, and Dad will come back later to make you something delicious, okay?”
Jiang Xiaoheng nodded obediently. However, just as Jiang Rong turned around, a small hand accurately grabbed his clothes. Looking down, he saw Jiang Xiaoheng looking up at him earnestly, showing no intention of letting go.
Jiang Rong sighed, “Alright, it’s very sunny outside, Dad will bring an umbrella.”
Jiang Xiaoheng’s face brightened, “Okay!”
As father and son walked out of the yard, the beautiful big flower of Little Fairy followed them, spinning behind them. When they approached the Eyries cactus, the big flower once again hit the faces of the father and son. The force was so strong that it overturned the umbrella they were holding.
Just as Jiang Rong was about to pick up the umbrella, the big flower forcefully flipped over and covered the heads of both of them. The fragrant and cool flower umbrella was far superior to any artificial umbrella. Jiang Xiaoheng instantly fell in love with this colorful flower umbrella and thanked Little Fairy in a childish voice, “Thank you, Little Fairy~”
Little Fairy shook the flower umbrella, shaking off fine pollen. Although Little Fairy was considerate, Jiang Rong still prepared to set some rules with it. “Little Fairy, I have something to ask of you.”
Little Fairy shook its thorns, “There’s a problem~”
Jiang Rong pointed in the direction of the house. “This is my son’s and my house. If you damage it, we won’t have anywhere to live. When I say damage, I mean using your thorns to pierce the house or using your roots to break through the walls. Do you understand what I mean?”
As soon as he finished speaking, the Eyries cactus stood upright with a “whoosh.” Due to the sudden movement, the big flower shifted, but the next moment, its vibrant petals once again drooped over the father and son. Little Fairy twisted its body, “Master Jiang~”
The voice in Jiang Rong’s mind told him that Little Fairy agreed to the first rule. Jiang Rong said solemnly, “The second rule is that you can’t harm people randomly.”
Lele timely barked twice beside Jiang Rong, reminding his master not to forget his existence. Jiang Rong paused before adding, “Of course, you also can’t harm the small animals in our home.”
As soon as he finished speaking, three thorns shot out from the Eyries cactus, each one landing in front of Lele. Although the roots of Little Fairy could break through concrete, the thorns still lacked a bit of strength. However, the speed and sudden attack were enough to scare Lele into backing away.
Lele’s ears flattened against his head as he barked loudly in the direction of Little Fairy. Little Fairy twisted its body and its voice sounded somewhat playful, “There’s a problem~”
Jiang Rong sighed inwardly, without showing any traces of it. He then became serious, “Little Fairy, I’m not joking. You and Lele are both members of our family. I hope you can protect each other and not bully each other. If you can’t do this, both Xiaoheng and I will be very upset.”
Little Fairy stood upright, “Master Jiang.”
A smile crept onto Jiang Rong’s lips as he nodded slightly, “Very well, let’s agree on that.”
As the two of them were about to return to the yard, Little Fairy shot out its thorns and blocked the path of the father and son. Jiang Rong turned back with a puzzled expression, “Hmm?”
Little Fairy seemed a bit anxious, and its childish voice echoed in Jiang Rong’s mind, “One, two, three, one, two, three!”
Jiang Rong miraculously understood Little Fairy’s meaning. It was asking him why he had only mentioned two rules in the three rules. His eyebrows raised slightly. He hadn’t expected the mutation of plants to evolve so quickly, and their intelligence was far superior to some mutated animals. No wonder in the previous life, the espers would rather confront high-level mutated animals than provoke high-level mutated plants.
Little Fairy didn’t understand human knowledge very well, and even if Jiang Rong explained it carefully, it might not understand. After a moment of thought, Jiang Rong decided to treat it the same way he treated his son. “The third point is to obey and tell me if you encounter any difficulties.”
Little Fairy shook its colorful big flower, “Master Jiang!”
Jiang Rong was very satisfied. “Alright, Little Fairy, stay here nicely. We’re going back.” Although they had brought an umbrella, the temperature around them was rising rapidly. After just a short time outside, both father and son were covered in sweat.
Looking up at the sun, Jiang Rong sighed helplessly. In this weather, only heat and drought-resistant plants could survive.
