Chapter 14: Good Student

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Editor: CaiCai, Kris

When Lin Nuo arrived at the stables, Rennes was already waiting for him.

The horse trainer led out a white horse for Lin Nuo and specifically advised, “This horse has a gentle temperament. Even though you, Your Highness, are a beginner, it won’t get angry with you.”

At that moment, Rennes’s black horse nearby snorted.

The trainer added, “Sir Clement’s horse, on the other hand, is much more temperamental. Only he can manage it. Your Highness, you must not ride Sir Clement’s horse; it will surely throw you off.”

Lin Nuo thanked the attentive horse trainer and, following what he’d learned in class, placed his right hand on the saddle, his left foot in the stirrup, and then mounted the horse, following Rennes out of the city.

As they made their way to the outer gate of the palace in the inner city, Rennes remained silent. Glancing discreetly at Rennes’s profile and recalling last night’s events, Lin Nuo couldn’t help but feel extremely awkward.

Amidst the awkwardness, there was also a bit of indescribable delight, perhaps because he’d discovered a little secret about the usually frosty and serious Sir Rennes Clement. Privately, Rennes treated the retrieved little creatures as pets and was rather lenient with them, allowing them to escape once or twice. Who would believe such a thing if it were known?

Sensing Lin Nuo’s gaze, Rennes subtly turned his head, indicating with his eyes, “What are you looking at?”

Feeling like he’d been caught peeking by Rennes, Lin Nuo blushed slightly and quickly suppressed the slight happiness in his mind, steering the conversation, “Today, what task are we undertaking, sir?”

Up to now, Lin Nuo only knew they were leaving the royal city for the capital of Saros, but he was unaware of the specific details of the mission.

Rennes, riding steadily, replied, “After we change to a carriage, I’ll use the crystal stone to inform you of the details.”

“Oh.” This left Lin Nuo unsure of what else to say. After a quiet ride for a while, Lin Nuo still felt awkward and thus found another topic, “Teacher, during the Summer Solstice Festival, what activities do you usually participate in?”

Singing, dancing, or perhaps dramas? Or endless banquets? Lin Nuo was genuinely curious about how this seemingly stoic knight would appear amidst a festive celebration.

Rennes glanced at him and calmly replied, “I don’t participate in any activities. My duty is to safeguard the royal family.”

Lin Nuo: This seems even more awkward.

Continuing their ride along the gravel path for an hour, Lin Nuo finally saw the gates of the capital of Saros, Faro City. Faro City, also known as the ‘City of Flowers’, was the largest city in Saros. The city boasted a pleasant climate, bustling with vitality and energy. Most nobles qualified to reside in the palace favored this environment, owning additional mansions in Faro City. Even many prominent merchants took pride in being able to live in Faro City—after all, it was the next closest place to the royal family in the entire country.

After entering the city, Rennes handed the two horses over to servants who were already waiting at the gate, while Lin Nuo curiously looked around. He somewhat understood why this city was dubbed the City of Flowers. The streets were paved with small gray bricks, meticulously cleaned. Along both sides were three to four-story buildings, all white-walled with red roofs, adorned with lovely balconies and terraces.

On these balconies, without exception, bloomed vibrant flowers, their colors intense against the white wall background. Even the air carried a faint fragrance. Taking a couple of steps forward, shielding his eyes from the slightly hot afternoon sun, Lin Nuo saw an ancient clock tower on a distant hill. The massive clock tower was covered in beautiful morning glories. In the nearly transparent blue sky, numerous white doves circled the tower—a serene and beautiful sight.

“So beautiful,” Lin Nuo couldn’t help but exclaim.

Rennes stood quietly beside him, not interrupting Lin Nuo’s observation. After looking around, Rennes finally opened the door of a black four-wheeled carriage and said to Lin Nuo, “Get in.”

This black carriage bore no royal insignia, appearing plain, similar to the passenger carriages commonly seen on the streets, easily hailed at any time. Inside the carriage, there were no extra decorations, only soft velvet cushions and dark curtains that dimmed the interior. Once inside, looking at Rennes sitting across from him, Lin Nuo felt somewhat uncomfortable no matter how he sat. Eventually, he decided to break the awkward silence with words.

“Teacher…” Lin Nuo cautiously spoke up.

“Yes?”

“I, um, just thought that when you transferred magic directly to me earlier, my wounds seemed to heal faster than when using magic circles. The effect was better,” Lin Nuo nervously said. He had promised Roy not to reveal the morning conversation to Rennes, so he had to come up with this plausible reason.

Rennes didn’t speak but crossed his arms and looked at him quietly.

“So,” Lin Nuo continued, “I thought that if you treat me again in the future, you don’t need to bother drawing magic circles. Just, just use it directly on me.”

“Oh…” Rennes remained silent for a while before replying calmly, “If Your Highness insists, I have no objections.”

Lin Nuo quickly nodded, “I insist!”

In the dim light, Rennes’s eyes briefly sparkled strangely before quickly dimming again, “Alright. In the future, I’ll do it according to Your Highness’s wishes.”

Lin Nuo breathed a sigh of relief, feeling more at ease. Great! This way, if Rennes treated him again in the future, it wouldn’t waste too much magical energy. I’m such a considerate and diligent student!
