Chapter 119: Graduation Exam and Blind Date Certificate

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

The twins slept for a good hour before waking up one after the other.

Mr. Wu, the brainless one, woke up first. Clearly, he was awake because of hunger. As soon as he opened his eyes, he reached for the pacifier next to his pillow and shoved it into his mouth, satisfying his craving. While sucking on the pacifier, his big eyes quickly darted around, eventually landing on Wu Chenghe’s face.

Although Wu Chenghe had returned to the front lines with Jin Xuan right after the birth of the children, the two kids were not strangers to his face. This was partly thanks to the meticulous care of Luther, the medical officer. Luther was afraid that the twins wouldn’t recognize Wu Chenghe when he returned, so he made sure the AI nanny responsible for feeding them had a face identical to his. Thus, over the past eight months, even though Wu Chenghe was far away in Tartaros, his face had become familiar to the twins in a unique way.

However, this also led to an unfortunate side effect: the twins had developed a conditioned reflex to his face, associating it with mealtime.

Mr. Wu had a big appetite and got hungry quickly. Just waking up and seeing the food dispenser made him very happy. He crawled to the side of the bed using both hands and feet, grabbed the railing, and wobbled to stand up, waving his hands towards his dad, “Mm mm mm!” Food, food, food!

Being twins, they were naturally weaker, although Mr. Wu was slightly stronger than his brother. However, even after eight months, they couldn’t stand alone and relied mainly on crawling. Seeing Mr. Wu’s legs wobbling as if he were about to fall, Wu Chenghe quickly reached out and picked him up from the crib, softly asking, “Baby woke up, need to pee?”

Mr. Wu, originally searching for something to eat, suddenly had a physiological response upon hearing the word “pee.” He shivered, and the diaper around his buttocks twitched, indicating that he had indeed finished peeing.

The speed… Wu Chenghe was speechless. He opened the diaper to find it almost full of water, so he took it off and replaced it with a new one. Mr. Wu, who was hungry and had just woken up, became impatient as Wu Chenghe fumbled with the diaper change. He whimpered impatiently and struggled to pull the pacifier out of his mouth, kicking Wu Chenghe with his chubby feet, “Mama!”

What did he just call me? Wu Chenghe paused, feeling uneasy. Although the child was indeed his, he was still a man. Being called “mama” as soon as he opened his mouth, what was going on?!

Enough was enough. This confusion between who’s the dad and who’s the mom had to be corrected from an early age! After dressing his son in a new diaper, Wu Chenghe held him under the armpits and let him stand on his thigh, patiently saying, “Baby, say daddy, I’m daddy, be good.”

Although Mr. Wu’s physical development was faster than his brother’s, he was weaker in terms of language. Even after more than eight months, he could only produce simple syllables, let alone longer sentences. His pale pink lips moved for a long time, his face turning red with effort, before he finally uttered a simple syllable, “Good!”

You’re good at keeping it short… Wu Chenghe felt a bit frustrated, gently shaking his son, “Say daddy, dad—dad—”

Mr. Wu, desperate with hunger after sleeping for so long without even a sip of water, reached his limit. He angrily threw the pacifier in his hand at Wu Chenghe’s face and burst into tears, wailing, “Waah, grandma, waah, mama…”

Wu Chenghe nearly stumbled from his loud crying, steadying himself with a shake before quickly embracing his son, gently patting his back, “Oh, oh, I’m sorry, daddy was too anxious, don’t cry, baby, be good…”

As the saying goes, when one cries, the other wakes up. Mr. Jin, who had been sleeping with his legs crossed, immediately woke up. Although he looked weaker, his limbs were thinner, making him slightly more agile than his brother. Upon hearing his brother’s cry, a hint of annoyance appeared on his usually worried face. He quickly climbed to the corner of the bed, shouting, “Hey hey!” before grabbing a pillow and throwing it over.

Without waiting for Wu Chenghe to come to his senses, his angry little son threw everything he could grab around him at him: pacifiers, rattles, drool towels… Finally, even the seed wind chime hanging at the head of the bed was torn down and plastered all over his dad’s face. As he did this, he kept muttering something sternly. Unfortunately, the speech of an eight-month-old child was not very articulate, and after listening for a while, all Wu Chenghe could grasp was the general idea: foolish adults! His elder brother was hungry, so why weren’t you feeding him? Were you so stupid that you wanted to die?

Although his speech was unclear, it didn’t hinder his divine demeanor. You wouldn’t believe it, but you could actually see a bit of Mrs. Balon’s principal style in him.

Wu Chenghe felt both embarrassed and exasperated. His eldest son was crying for food, and his youngest son was trying to climb out of the crib to beat him up. He instantly felt the world’s thick malice — Heavens! His eldest son was a fool, and his youngest son was a weapon!

Amidst the chaos, when Luther, the medical officer, heard the commotion and rushed in, Wu Chenghe was already overwhelmed, holding the eldest in one hand and pressing down the youngest with the other, with smoke coming out of his head. Luther quickly activated the AI nanny and took Mr. Jin out of the crib, hastily explaining to Wu Chenghe, “They want to eat as soon as they wake up. The older brother is hungry. The younger brother can’t stand anyone bullying his brother. If you keep doing this, he’ll get angry.”

The AI nanny quickly prepared bottles for the two children. Finally, the brothers stopped crying and each took a bottle to drink. Mr. Wu still had tears on his face, his big eyes blinking as he looked at the AI nanny and then at his dad. Seeing their identical faces, he found it amusing and laughed with a “heh.”

Wu Chenghe was speechless at his eldest son’s lack of insight. He was worried that he might choke from laughing too much and gently patted his back, saying, “Be good, don’t laugh while eating, be careful not to choke.”

Mr. Jin, who was originally sitting aside drinking milk, crawled over unhappily when he saw an unidentified adult reaching out to his brother again. He coldly pushed away his hand and warned him with a small fist.

Wu Chenghe felt quite aggrieved to be looked down upon by his son, but then he thought about how close the brothers were, even at such a young age, knowing to protect each other. It wasn’t a bad thing, but he couldn’t help but sigh with a mix of emotions.

Seeing his changing expression, Luther, the medical officer, thought he was unhappy and quickly explained about the two children, “Don’t be angry. That’s just how they are. The older brother, although physically bigger, is slower in terms of intelligence and tends to complain to his younger brother about everything. The younger brother is smaller, but he’s smart and quick, always standing up for his brother.”

“No, no, I’m not angry.” Wu Chenghe hadn’t even washed his clothes since his children were born, let alone had time to be angry. He was busy, “I’m happy to see how affectionate they are. Thank you for teaching them so well.”

“You’re thinking too much.” Luther, the medical officer, wiped the sweat from his forehead. “I didn’t intentionally teach them anything. It’s just the younger brother’s natural temperament. You’ll understand when you’ve been a parent for a while. He’s not a good-natured child either. He relies on his intelligence to control his brother tightly. He won’t allow anyone to bully his brother. He’s the only one allowed to bully…”

As if to confirm his words, Mr. Jin suddenly poked his brother’s cheek with a finger, then handed him his own bottle, saying, “Don’t drink! Switch!”

Mr. Wu stupidly took his bottle and handed over his own, continuing to drink.

“You see, he doesn’t like to drink milk. Every time he gets a bottle, he won’t drink it properly. He waits for his brother to drink half of it before switching. This way, he drinks half a bottle less.” Luther, the medical officer, briefed Wu Chenghe on his younger son’s mischievous deeds. “If it’s applesauce, he’ll do the opposite. He’ll order his brother not to eat first, then eat half before switching, so he can have one and a half portions.”

Looking at his small and skinny younger son, Wu Chenghe couldn’t imagine how such a small person could be so cunning. In just over eight months, he had learned to bully… no, manipulate his brother.

Feeling Wu Chenghe’s surprised gaze, Mr. Jin gave him a cold, noble look, took the pacifier out of his mouth, and delivered another incomprehensible reprimand. This time, Wu Chenghe quickly understood what he was saying: foolish adults, don’t dare to look at my handsome face when I’m eating, or I’ll cut you down in minutes!

Wu Chenghe couldn’t even fit another black line on his face and silently covered his forehead, turning away.

The little ones, having eaten and drank their fill, were in much better moods. Mr. Wu leaned back on the Totoro cushion, digesting his food, while his big eyes observed his dad and the AI nanny. Mr. Jin seemed to have long distinguished between them, disdainful of being entangled in such childish matters. He continued to crawl around in circles on the carpet, occasionally picking up a seed that he had just pulled off the wind chime and putting it in his mouth to test it, then rolling it on the ground as if conducting some kind of scientific experiment.

Wu Chenghe played with the two children, or rather watched them play stupidly, occasionally helping by passing a toy or rocking the wooden horse. He had lived two lifetimes but had no experience in taking care of children, feeling a bit awkward around these soft, squishy creatures, not knowing how to interact with them.

But perhaps it was the nature of father and son. After a few hours, the children’s hostility towards him gradually faded, and they were willing to play with him, especially the brainless Mr. Wu, who generously dug out a spoonful of his own snack — pumpkin puree nutrient — and stuffed it into his mouth. But it was clear that he was very wary of his younger brother. When he fed his dad, he reflexively sought Mr. Jin’s approval with his eyes. Mr. Jin, on the other hand, snorted coldly and waved his hand at Wu Chenghe, wearing an expression that seemed to say, “Eat, eat, this is what I bestow upon you, foolish adult.”

Father and son stared at each other for several hours, negotiating with each other. When it was time for lunch, Wu Chenghe finally got a reprieve and was sent by Doctor Luther to the cafeteria to eat. In the cafeteria, he met some old classmates whom he used to get along well with. They stayed together chatting for a while, and he learned that there had been significant changes in the curriculum at the guide school. The membership of their “Phoenix Society” had expanded to over seven hundred people. He couldn’t help but feel very happy—self-awareness in the guide was key to gaining freedom. The education in the past guide schools had been too lacking. With these gradual reforms, everyone might have the chance to become psychologically independent, not just relying on a sentinel to tell them what to do.

Surprisingly, quite a few people knew about him receiving the Blue Cross Medal. Everyone congratulated him and expressed their desire to emulate him, striving to bring glory to the school. Wu Chenghe then realized that he had been made an exemplary figure by the school and was being widely promoted. He couldn’t help but marvel at how his life had reached a new peak; he had never imagined he could experience being idolized like a celebrity.

Being scrutinized by everyone was really uncomfortable. How did Jin Xuan manage to endure it back then?

They chatted for hours, and after parting ways, Wu Chenghe returned to the guide hospital. Just as he reached the entrance of the nursery, he saw a nurse anxiously standing there. As soon as she saw him, she hurried over, “Mr. Wu, you’re back! The twins have been looking for you. The AI nanny couldn’t calm them down. Please, go and see them quickly.”

Wu Chenghe was flattered. He had only been absent for a morning, yet the two children couldn’t bear to be without him. Could it be true that the bond between father and son had scientific reasoning behind it? Pushing open the door to the nursery, he saw toys strewn all over the room. An AI nanny was telling a story in a gentle male voice, but the two children were paying no attention. Wu Chenggong was crawling around, wearing the coat he had left there in the morning, looking like a gust of wind. Every now and then, he would stop and wiggle a bit, seemingly amused by something, giggling happily. Jin Shengli was riding a rocking horse, talking to the AI robot. Although the sounds he made were chaotic, his tone and expression were just like Doctor Luther’s when he was instructing his subordinates.

Wu Chenghe didn’t dare disturb them and listened at the doorway for a while. He roughly understood their meaning: Don’t try to fool me with robots; where’s my mommy? Let that stupid adult come in and accompany me!

Although being called “mommy” was a bit annoying, Wu Chenghe was deeply touched that his youngest son had accepted him so quickly. He took off his shoes and walked in, clapping his hands, “Darlings, don’t worry, Daddy’s here.”

The twins stopped playing simultaneously. Wu Chenggong laughed joyfully and crawled over to him, still wearing the coat. Jin Shengli, unable to get down from the rocking horse immediately, was a bit slower. But he managed to crawl over and catch up with his brother.

“Mama, hug!” Mr. Wu wobbled to his feet, reaching out with chubby hands, asking to be picked up.

Just as Wu Chenghe was about to pick him up, Mr. Jin rushed over, knelt down, and also reached out with his little hand, “Me too! Hug me!”

Everything has an order… Wu Chenghe hesitated for a moment but decided to reach out to his older brother first. However, just as his fingers touched his brother, Mr. Jin’s dark eyes suddenly flashed with a hint of mischief, and he loudly exclaimed, “Daddy, hug!”

Oh my goodness! In an instant, Wu Chenghe knelt to his younger son. He actually resorted to this move to compete for his older brother’s affection! Didn’t he just call himself “mommy” a moment ago while scolding the AI nanny? How come he smoothly transitioned to calling himself “daddy” in the blink of an eye?

This child is really unique!

Wu Chenghe couldn’t help but laugh and feel soft-hearted. He simply lifted both of them up at the same time, kissing each of their cheeks, “You’re both so good!”

Wu Chenggong laughed heartily, stretching his neck to kiss him back, leaving a face full of saliva. Jin Shengli snorted reservedly, resting his chin on Wu Chenghe’s shoulder, swaying back and forth, as if to say, since you have the strength to carry both of us, I’ll forgive you this time.

In the afternoon, Wu Chenghe accompanied the two sons to nap, had some snacks, and read a few simple stories, gradually gaining the children’s initial trust. After dinner, Doctor Luther asked if he wanted to take the two children back to the dormitory. After careful consideration, he refused and decided to leave the children at the guide hospital, asking Luther and the nurses to take care of them.

His previous thoughts were too naive. He had thought that having AI robots would solve everything. But after spending a day with the children, he realized it was simply impossible. He could rationalize leaving the children with a nanny to focus on studying, but emotionally, he couldn’t ignore their crying and remain indifferent. Moreover, taking care of young children was really difficult. If he lost focus for a moment, accidents would happen frequently—getting caught in the bed rail, choking on water, fighting over toys… Just after one day, he felt a bit overwhelmed. If this continued for a month, he might have a heart attack.

With exams looming in a month, he still had a lot of catching up to do. If he accidentally failed a subject, all his previous efforts with Jin Xuan would be in vain. He wouldn’t be able to attend the graduation ball, nor could they get married. They would just be wasting all the efforts they had put in before.

A temporary separation wasn’t a big deal. As long as they could endure this month, they could reunite as a family. Jin Xuan was about to transfer to the navy, joining General Yan Ling on the auspicious cruise of the Zhifu Chain. After they got married, he would be eligible to join them with the children. By then, they would have plenty of time to be together as a family.

Doctor Luther fully supported his decision. He knew that Wu Chenghe would be leaving the Tungusic base after the exams. These two children had been raised by him since they were in their mother’s womb. The thought of separating in a month didn’t sit well with him, so he was willing to take care of them for a few more days.

Both parties reached an agreement, and Wu Chenghe played with the twins for a while longer before returning to his dormitory late at night. The cabin was meticulously clean, with his uniform neatly ironed and hung in the wardrobe—white trousers, light blue shirt, with the guide school emblem embroidered on the chest. He used to find it particularly annoying, but now that he was leaving, he felt somewhat reluctant.

After all, this place was the cradle of full-time doctors. Most of the guides who walked out of here, along with their sentinels, guarded the federation’s borders. Although they lacked freedom and individual personality, their contributions to the federation remained indelible. Wu Chenghe sighed deeply, changed into his pajamas, and went to the study room to review his lessons. From now on, every second of his time would be counted, and he had to make every second count.

In a devilish manner, he revised his studies, following a strict schedule he had set for himself. He woke up at five in the morning, studied until eight, then attended classes, followed by an intensive review session specially designed for him by Professor Hans. After lunch, he went to the hospital to accompany his sons, played with them until two in the afternoon, then returned to class. At four, he started his own revision again, went to the hospital at six to be with his sons, and returned for a final round of revision until one in the morning before going to bed.

There were no weekends, no holidays, no socializing, and no rest. Wu Chenghe fully utilized the test-taking abilities of the people from the Celestial Empire. Following the principle of “memorize everything before the exam, forget everything after,” he swept through the compulsory courses of the 16th-level guide at a pace of one book per day. What frustrated him was that despite humanity progressing for a thousand years, test-oriented education had regressed by eleven hundred years. Nowadays, there weren’t even preparatory classes available; students had to learn everything on their own!

Where were the promised “pre-exam improvement classes”? Where was the “seven-day sprint course”? Not even a syllabus was provided! Wu Chenghe felt overwhelmed by the revisions, becoming increasingly irritable. In order to pass the exams smoothly, he had to grab Professor Hans and teach him some long-lost techniques like “emphasizing key points” and “defining the scope.” Hans was also anxious about how Wu Chenghe could pass so many courses at once. As soon as he explained it, he had a sudden realization and began marking up the course materials in various ways.

Wu Chenghe never expected that even this primitive guy from a thousand years ago had a time when he shone. Although this “golden finger” wasn’t quite up to standard, he managed to handle several courses that required extensive memorization, such as “Cultivation of Thought.” It could be considered a tribute to his ancestors.

A month later, the graduation exams arrived on schedule. Wu Chenghe and the other ninety-three guides who were about to graduate were sent to a fully enclosed examination center. Over the next seven days, he took exams for over a dozen courses of the 16th-level guide, from medical knowledge to guide courses, to the cultivation of thought… Seven days later, when he finished the last exam paper in the evening and walked out of the examination center, he surprisingly felt a sense of release, as if he had completed a prison sentence!

At this moment, he desperately wanted to tear up the books, burn the papers, and create chaos in the teaching building, just like he did after the college entrance examination in his previous life! But in this world, paper was rarely used, and holographic courses couldn’t be torn. After hesitating for a while, he could only go to the guide hospital to see his sons and vent his emotions on the two little bunnies.

However, when he really entered the nursery and saw the two chubby white buns, all his anger dissipated. After a month of bonding, the twins had developed a deep affection for him. Especially the thoughtless Mr. Wu, perhaps because of his simple-mindedness, was very attached to his biological father. He discovered that calling “dad” would give him the opportunity to be hugged first. He even overcame his speech impediment and learned the famous children’s song “Dad Is the Best in the World” within a month, and even created several variations, giving the song a punk rock style.

Although Mr. Jin had a slightly higher IQ and clear pronunciation, he had some innate obstacles in music. Not to mention “Dad Is the Best in the World,” he couldn’t even sing simple songs properly. In this regard, he could only admire his brother.

But a cunning child like him wouldn’t stumble in the same pit twice. Unable to sing, he would please his biological father in other ways, often praising Wu Chenghe with phrases like “Dad is good” and “Dad is smart,” which others often used on him. Once, he even heard someone say it and praised Wu Chenghe as “the top.” Wu Chenghe didn’t know whether to be happy or angry—was this guy mocking him for not being able to top?

Jin Xuan, who was undergoing special training at the naval headquarters, was still unaware that his own son had already dug a pit for him with his wife, planting the seeds of a very bad idea…

A week later, the results of the graduation exams were announced. Wu Chenghe passed all the exams with slightly below-average scores and became a freshly graduated 16th-level guide from the guide school. On the day of the graduation ceremony, Mrs. Balon personally pinned a delicate graduate badge on his chest and handed him a ticket to the graduation ball, saying, “Congratulations, classmate. Please, remember the honor of being a guide, and I wish you find an excellent mate at the ball.”

Reading this chapter felt like an adventure. WC and JX have a long road ahead of them as parents. These buns’ personalities are a real roller coaster. I was worried because they are both very young but then I remembered the mental age of each one and I really can only light candles for this beautiful family hehehe
