Chapter 7: Troublesome Pet

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Editor: Karai

Wu Chenghe was petrified. He stared in disbelief in Monica’s direction, unable to believe that he was also a guide. Although the Sergeant’s words had already aroused suspicion in him before, seeing another guide’s quantum beast at this moment was still difficult for him to accept.

Nobody wanted to be a guide. Even though the “Sentinel Protection Special Act” had been abolished, guides still lacked personal freedom because of their rarity. Once confirmed, they would immediately be sent to guide schools for closed training until they reached adulthood and graduated with satisfactory performance.

But graduation didn’t mean they could live like normal people. In order to maximize their utility, the federation would select specific spouses for them, including politicians, military officers, scientists, and others who made significant contributions to society. They would marry these individuals and continue to work as assistants by their side.

Of course, the pairing process was not mandatory. Within a certain range, democratic principles were still followed, and guides still had the right to choose their partners. Every year during graduation season, the guide school would hold a grand graduation ball, allowing guides and candidates to get to know each other romantically and voluntarily establish mate relationships, registering for marriage.

In simple terms, it was a semi-compulsory official blind date. However, because those eligible to participate in the “official blind date” were mostly high-ranking sentinels, their status was prominent. Such marriages were destined to be unequal, and guides could only play a submissive and auxiliary role within the family.

Moreover, once a sentinel had a sexual relationship with a guide, it was equivalent to establishing the ultimate “mark” on them. From then on, they would have a strong desire to protect and possess their mate. This desire was extremely exclusive. If any other sentinel, or even an ordinary person, showed affection towards their guide, even if it was well-intentioned, they would immediately drive them away or even kill them.

This bond was so unbreakable that it was more instinctual than romantic love. For sentinels, the possession and protection of their mate were as natural as air and water, ingrained in their marrow. This was why Ava pitied Monica. She said she would be “imprisoned for life beside a man”.

Wu Chenghe was dumbfounded by the miserable fate he might face. As a man who had transmigrated from the 21st century and longed for gentle girls, how could he face the government-issued female sentinel for free? Screw it, I’ve become so pathetic, am I going to end up with a girl who dominates and I submit? Or maybe they’ll assign me a guy… heh.

Wu Chenghe laughed at his own thoughts, feeling both amused and horrified.

“Meow~” The little ragdoll was awakened by his laughter. It hopped off the bed with its short legs, tumbled on the floor, and wobbled over to him, lying down beside his shoes.

“I can see it, but where’s my quantum beast?” Wu Chenghe suddenly wondered, looking around but not finding a second animal.

Is it because I haven’t fully awakened yet? Or am I a mutant among mutants, able to see other people’s quantum beasts but not be a guide myself? Then how do I explain my saintly aura? Isn’t the strong sense of mission to heal and save people only for guides?

Wu Chenghe scratched his head in confusion, ultimately deciding that no matter what, he couldn’t tell anyone about this. The world was too cruel to guides, and he couldn’t risk himself.

Monica returned to normal after twenty-four hours of intense estrus, and her report was sent to the federation. When “Scout025” docked at Gabriel Military Harbor, the federation officially responded, demanding that the Voyager Army send her to the guide school within thirty standard days.

Time was pressing, and she didn’t even have the chance to say goodbye to her family before being sent to the temporary guide protection camp at Gabriel Military Harbor—because her estrus reaction was quite strong, she had to undergo professional treatment to ensure she could adapt to guide school life.

Wu Chenghe bid farewell to the tearful girl and promised to see her off before she left, then walked down from “Scout025”. Upon his arrival, Wu Chenghe was greeted by Commander Hannibal’s private fleet. Initially, Wu Chenghe didn’t recognize the vehicle as a car; he mistook it for a flying saucer because it had no wheels, only a sphere with a faint blue halo around its center.

“Hello, Mr. Charlie,” Hannibal’s first secretary, Yuna, greeted him apologetically. “Commander Hannibal is away on official business and couldn’t come to pick you up. He asked me to take you to your residence.”

Yuna used the term “residence” instead of “home,” which relieved Wu Chenghe. As a newbie, his acting skills weren’t great. Even pretending to have amnesia was somewhat forced, and the fewer witnesses, the safer.

The three saucers took off, flying along the near-ground orbit of Gabriel Military Harbor. The scale of the harbor was enormous, comparable to a small asteroid. It resembled a short, thick concrete pipe, with the military center built on the outer surface and residential areas on the inner surface. A massive power center floated in the center of the pipe, radiating energy like the sun, providing power to the living facilities and simulating day and night cycles every 24 hours.

The saucers’ speed wasn’t fast. Through the transparent vehicle walls, Wu Chenghe could see the densely packed skyscrapers, lush forests, and even a large lake on the ground, which was quite impressive.

“Your temporary residence is arranged in the community next to the military headquarters,” Yuna said. “It’s Commander Hannibal’s private property. He lived there for a few years before getting married. The Commander will be back tomorrow morning and will personally come to see you.”

Wu Chenghe, sticking to his “soft, cute, and confused” persona, nodded obediently, fearing to reveal his true manly nature.

Passing the magnificent Voyager Army headquarters building, the saucers descended slowly at the entrance of an elegantly landscaped community. Yuna escorted him to a small villa fenced with white picket fencing and said, “This is the Commander’s private area. Unauthorized access is prohibited. I can only take you here. The Commander said he has input your DNA key into the access control, so you can enter by yourself. Please, contact me anytime if you need anything. I’ll be on standby 24/7.”

“Thank you, you’ve been very helpful,” Wu Chenghe thanked her gently. As the Commander’s first secretary, she must be very busy. Hannibal sending her to pick him up showed how much he valued his “cheap son.” A bit strange indeed…

Yuna nodded, forcing a stiff smile on her icy face. “My pleasure.”

Wu Chenghe watched her leave, then verified the key and entered Commander Hannibal’s bachelor apartment.

It was a very exquisite standalone villa, not large, with two floors: the first floor had a living room, kitchen, and dining room, while the second floor had a bedroom and study. The furnishings weren’t much different from those a thousand years ago—sofas were still sofas, tables were still tables, but the lines were particularly simple, and the colors were mostly white, giving it a snowy cave-like appearance.

Wu Chenghe didn’t have any luggage; only himself. He wandered around the room, used the cooking machine in the kitchen to prepare a nutrient-rich dinner, and then took a shower before going to bed. Hannibal’s bed was large, with clean white sheets and pillows, emitting a faint scent of mint, very clean. Wu Chenghe rolled around on the bed, closed his eyes, and soon fell into a dream.

In his dream, he found himself in a jungle, with towering trees casting dense shade everywhere. Thick vines hung down from the treetops like curtains. He saw an egg, nestled in a grassy nest under a big tree beside him, about the size of a ping pong ball, round and translucent, with a light orange hue and a faint silk-like luster on the surface. Bright light shone through the gaps in the leaves, revealing a small shadow inside.

It sat quietly there, inexplicably. Wu Chenghe looked at it and felt a strange familiarity, as if it should be there, and had always been there. Feeling a bit dazed, Wu Chenghe reached out and touched the eggshell. His fingertips felt a warm and soft sensation, very familiar, as if touching his own face.

He suddenly felt very reassured, a faint smile appearing on his lips, and he fell into a deep sleep. He didn’t know how long he had slept when a cold wind suddenly blew. Opening his eyes, he found himself still in the jungle, and the egg was still standing quietly in the grass nest, except now it was even more transparent, almost invisible, with only sunlight refracting off it making it barely visible on the grass leaves.

“Caw—” a distant call came. Wu Chenghe looked up and saw a pair of black wings passing through the gap in the treetops, as if some large bird was circling.

Looking back at the grass under the tree, the egg had completely turned transparent, like a bubble hidden in the grass leaves. If it weren’t for the sunlight refraction, it would be invisible.

Suddenly, there was a loud noise from above. Startled, Wu Chenghe looked up, and saw a large hole being torn open in the dense canopy, a beam of dazzling light shining down, casting the silhouette of a pair of black wings.

“!” Wu Chenghe woke up abruptly. The room was dark, but he could still vaguely feel the cold breath from the dream.

What time was it? Wu Chenghe glanced at the direction of the front yard. The terminal in his body immediately connected to the room’s main control system, issuing a command to remove the blackout color from the entire wall, letting the bright light from outside in.

It was bright outside, with birds chirping and flowers blooming. It was already half past seven in the morning. Wu Chenghe took a deep breath, gradually calming down, stretched lazily, and habitually rolled over on the bed. But before he could finish rolling, he froze—there was someone in the corner!

He didn’t know when his Commander dad had returned, but he was sitting in a sofa chair in the corner, wearing a neat military uniform, looking at him thoughtfully. With a thud, Wu Chenghe rolled off the bed—being spied on while sleeping in the early morning was too scary!

“Whoa, be careful!” Hannibal jumped up, quickly picked him up, and put him back on the bed, saying, “Wake up properly before getting out of bed next time. Don’t roll in the wrong direction.”

His words were light-hearted and humorous, with a hint of affection for his son, but Wu Chenghe couldn’t feel any happiness because he saw his quantum beast—Hannibal was a strong sentinel, and his quantum beast was a powerful attack raptor. A black-and-chestnut eagle was perched on his shoulder, with its feathers erect and its golden eyes alertly scanning the direction of the large bed, as if searching for something.

You can’t see me, you can’t see me, I can’t see you… Wu Chenghe realized that it was searching for those black wings in his dream. Suddenly, cold sweat broke out on his back. While silently hypnotizing the eagle and himself, he averted his gaze, crawled out of bed to pick up the clothes he had thrown on the floor last night, and said dryly, “I’m just not used to being watched while sleeping.”

“Oh, are you angry?” Hannibal smiled and ruffled his hair. “Sorry, I heard from Yuna that you arrived as soon as I came back, so I couldn’t help but come and see you. I was so tired, so I just sat down for a while.”

Wu Chenghe had soft, shiny black hair. With a rub from Hannibal’s big hand, it instantly became fluffy. Coupled with his delicate and pretty face, he looked even cuter.

“Get dressed, I’ll take you out for breakfast. You’re too thin,” Hannibal said after looking at him for a while. Unable to resist, he tried to rub him again, but Wu Chenghe quickly dodged, climbing to the other side of the bed to pick up the clothes he had thrown on the floor last night.

Hannibal watched his son with fluffy hair and in his underwear, bending over to pick up his clothes, his slender spine forming a beautiful arc, stretching his fair skin to a shiny brightness. A mysterious smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.

【He has the same genes as me. He’s so beautiful】

i find it incredibly creepy that both father and son looked at eachother and had thoughts along the same line: that the other person was sexy/beautiful. its giving me hives just reading about this dad calling the curvature of his spine “slender and beautiful.” hes literally checking out his son 😭 and when wu chenghe called his dad’s voice “sexy” some few chapters ago, i almost jumped ship. i actually might just jump ship, this family relationship is too wild
