The large gate slowly opened, and the air-floated vehicle flew into the core command center of the Tarataros residence.
Through the porthole, Yin Bo saw a red “X-X” mark on the inner wall, which meant top-secret within the Voyager Army. It seemed he was indeed nearing the target location. Two guards sat on either side of him, unmoving. The white lab coat who had brought him in sat across from him, eyes gleaming as if scrutinizing livestock.
As for the guide who had triggered his bonding heat, Yin Bo speculated he was in the rear cabin. This vehicle was divided into two cabins, and he sat in the last row of seats in the front cabin. He could smell the sweet, maddening scent emanating from behind the partition.
“Use this, you look terrible.” The white lab coat handed him a syringe. Yin Bo hesitated but took it. It was probably some kind of high-dose balancer. Injecting so many drugs in one day would greatly damage his consciousness, but obviously not taking the shot would be worse. His bonding heat was about to drive him into a frenzy.
“Which faction are you from?” The lab coat, now noticing his identity, asked.
“I’m not from any faction, I’m just a tourist!” Yin Bo had erased all traces of forgery long before he was caught. He also sent a distress message to Jin Xuan. His spy intuition told him that he should maintain a civilian identity under the current circumstances.
Sure enough, the lab coat was taken aback. “You’re not from the Legion?”
“I’m here with our boss to negotiate with General Yuri.” Yin Bo hoped to put some pressure on them by mentioning General Yuri. “I wanted to take a look around the residence, help our boss scout the location, but I accidentally got lost. Seeing so many people lining up here, I thought I’d come and ask for directions, and then you showed up, and then it turned into this!” He put on a frightened expression. “Sir, what’s going on? I feel like something’s not right with my body. My previous manic episodes weren’t like this! Where are you taking me?”
“Turns out you’re just a civilian…” The lab coat frowned, seeming somewhat vexed. After a moment of thought, he said, “Let me see your pass.”
Yin Bo opened the pass given to him by quartermaster Officer. The lab coat looked at his basic information and suddenly became ecstatic, eyes shining like a wolf. He muttered to himself, “Black Panther Sentinel, excellent genes, mixed blood from seven countries, and you’re a inter-maleâperfect, absolutely perfect!”
Perfect? What did that mean? Yin Bo maintained an innocent expression while his brain raced, trying to piece together what had just happened: they had a guide, a guide highly compatible with him, and the lab coat had previously said he was the one they were looking for, now he was praising him as perfect…
An incredible guess suddenly occurred to him â could they be trying to give him a guide?
Oh my god! Was such a stroke of luck possible in this world? Guides were such cherished creatures, when did it become the turn of a low-ranking officer like him to indulge in such fantasies? He had only been promoted to captain two months ago, still light years away from colonel!
“W-what do you mean, perfect? Me?” Yin Bo put on a nervous expression and looked at the lab coat. “Sir, what are you going to do? Where are you taking me? Can I make a call to my boss?”
“Oh, don’t be afraid, and don’t rush. I’ll explain it to you slowly later. Anyway, it’s definitely a good thing for you, something you’ll never encounter in your life.” The lab coat smiled reassuringly. “This area has information shielding, ordinary personal terminals can’t contact the outside world. If you want to talk to your boss, I need to get permission from my superiors first. Well, just relax, we’ll be there soon.”
Yin Bo wanted to ask more questions but heard a slight noise from the rear cabin. The lab coat immediately stood up nervously and asked, “Are you okay, Mr. Xiao Shan?”
The rear cabin was sealed, with only a one-foot-square transparent window above the partition. Yin Bo had been facing away from the window since he came in, never getting a chance to see what the guide looked like. Taking advantage of the lab coat’s distraction, he pretended to be curious and turned around to look.
Through the window, he saw a slender Asian man sitting in the dim corner of the rear cabin, very young, no older than thirty. His features were sharp, his expression cold and proud, exuding a calm and melancholic aura. His skin was very fair, with a faint pink tint on his cheekbones due to estrus. His pitch-black eyes were irregular ovals, and his forehead was covered in cold sweat, obviously struggling to resist the pain brought on by bonding heat.
A not-so-obvious dark brown figure lay at his feet, a chameleon about twenty centimeters long. Because of his master’s fluctuating consciousness, it couldn’t maintain a stable camouflage. Its skin color fluctuated between light and dark, looking agonized and conflicted.
A typical invisible guide… Yin Bo’s pupils shrank. He activated his smart eyes silently and took a picture of him, saving it to his personal terminal. There was electromagnetic shielding here, so he couldn’t send out any information for the time being. If they allowed him to contact Jin Xuan later, he would find a way to send the picture out.
“Who is he?” Yin Bo turned back, looking at the lab coat with a puzzled expression.Â
The lab coat smiled but remained silent. “Don’t worry, I need to consult my superiors before I can determine if you can have contact with him. Um, anyway, good luck to you, young man.”
“Wait, sir, something doesn’t feel right.” Yin Bo’s face suddenly changed, grabbing the lab coat’s sleeve, and asked, “Who is he? Why do I feel a sweet scent coming from him, very fragrant…” He stopped suddenly, glanced at the rear window, then at the lab coat, widened his eyes, and exclaimed, “He’s a guide!”
Pretending to be clueless had its limits. With his nosebleed and a direct encounter with the guide, pretending not to understand would be a bit too much.
The lab coat smirked but didn’t say anything, tacitly acknowledging it. He patted Yin Bo’s shoulder reassuringly and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything to you… Oh, we’re here, let’s get off.”
The air-floated vehicle stopped in front of an inconspicuous two-story building, with no signage except for an “X-X” mark at the entrance. The door opened, and with the “help” of two guards, Yin Bo got off the vehicle and was led inside by the lab coat. As they entered, Yin Bo saw someone opening the rear cabin, and the invisible guide named “Mr. Xiao Shan” also got off the vehicle, escorted by two ordinary human soldiers into another entrance on the side of the building.
By now, Yin Bo had almost guessed the origin of this invisible guide. The NTU data mentioned that during the “Massacre” era, there was an underground guide protection organization, specifically providing refuge for guides who didn’t want to be sent to the Tungusic base. Those hidden guides were called “Free Guides.” This organization was said to still exist today, with estimates suggesting they protected at least two thousand guides, hiding them from the federal government’s sight.
This “Mr. Xiao Shan” should be one of the free guides, otherwise, he wouldn’t have remained undiscovered at his age. For some reason, he had been captured by Lancer’s people, but instead of handing him over to the guide school, they kept him locked up and were even looking for a highly compatible sentinel for him.
What were they trying to do? Yin Bo pondered quickly in the elevator. He suddenly thought of the mission of the Special Ops Team â they were looking for a secret research institution related to guide embryo interference!
The probability of guides giving birth to guides was many times higher than that of ordinary people, and the higher the compatibility, the higher the probability. That guide was a man, highly compatible with him, and he was a fertile maleâeverything made sense. Indeed, as the lab coat said, his luck was extremely good, walking down the street and becoming a stud candidate with just a nosebleed.
The elevator quickly descended to the fifth underground floor. Guided by two guards, Yin Bo walked about ten meters along a narrow corridor and arrived at a bare room. This seemed to be a reception room, with chairs and tables arranged, and the ceiling emitted a pale cold light, making people uncomfortable.
The guards left, locking the door behind them. The reception room was now empty, with only Yin Bo inside. He stood still for a while, looking anxious, before cautiously sitting down on a chair, trying to appear like a nervous civilian. He noticed surveillance cameras in all four corners of the room, indicating that someone was watching his every move from elsewhere.
The tedious wait continued with no one coming to inquire or explain anything to him. There wasn’t even anyone to serve water. After waiting for over an hour, Yin Bo began to feel restless, knocking on the door and shouting phrases like “Is anyone there?” “Let me out!” “I want to make a call!”… but no one came to attend to him.
He waited like this for over four hours until the door finally opened. The lab coat who brought him in walked in with a smile and said, “Ah, sorry to keep you waiting.”
Yin Bo stood up abruptly, his temper flaring. “What exactly are you trying to do? It’s illegal to detain me like this! I want to see my boss, I want to see General Yuri, you wait, I’ll report you to the authorities! You’re illegally imprisoning civilians and harboring guides!”
“Oh, don’t get agitated, sir. According to regulations, we can request assistance from any civilian in a military residence, and inquiries within forty-eight hours are legal.” The lab coat seemed unconcerned about Yin Bo reporting them, nor did he seem intimidated by General Yuri. He smiled and sat down in the chair opposite Yin Bo, tapping the table. “As for the issue of harboring guides, come, let’s talk about it. I think you’ll appreciate our actions after you hear what I have to say.” He winked, meaningfully adding, “I told you, I’ll bring you good luck.”
Yin Bo sat down with suspicion, asking, “What do you want to talk about? You’ve locked me underground, and now you want to have a chat with me?!”
“This isn’t just any underground place; it’s the Tartaros Research Institute.” The lab coat said, “I’m a researcher here, you can call me Dr. Haynes.”
Yin Bo was taken aback. “A research institute? Isn’t this just a regular residence?”
Haynes explained, âThis is not an ordinary base, it’s the secret base of the Second Corps. There are some classified matters I can’t disclose, but what you need to know is that we currently have a research project that requires your assistance.”
Here it comes! Yin Bo still had a skeptical expression. “What research project? I don’t understand anything; I’m just an ordinary assistant.”
“Oh, you don’t need to understand anything. Just cooperate with our research,” Haynes said. “Here’s the situation: the guide you met earlier, Mr. Kazumi Koyama, is a free guide. He volunteered to assist us in a gene interference research project. However, this research also requires a highly compatible sentinel.”
“Me?” Yin Bo pointed to himself.
“Yes,” Haynes nodded. “Mr. Kazumi Koyama is a chameleon guide with a unique physique, and finding a compatible partner for him has been extremely difficult. We’ve been searching for months without success in finding someone who can emit pheromones with him. Luckily, we encountered you today. Otherwise, we would have had to take him to another base.” Haynes revealed that green-eyed look again, “You’re very lucky, young man. You’re the only one in the entire Talraros who can control his estrus. Initially, we regretted that you’re a man, but it turns out you’re a fertile male, so all problems are solved.”
“Wait a minute.” Yin Bo raised his hand, saying, “Are you suggesting I should bear a child for him?”
“Ah, you’re clever,” Haynes applauded. “Exactly, my dear sir. We have a new drug for clinical trials, and we need a pair of highly compatible sentinel-guide pairs to conduct embryo gene interference and observe the drug’s efficacy. Mr. Kazumi Koyama has agreed to be with you. What do you think?”
All speculations were confirmed, but Yin Bo still couldn’t believe it. They actually wanted him to have a child with a stranger. And the other person was a guide!
As a special agent, he had many privileges that ordinary soldiers didn’t have, such as gambling with public funds, public-funded travel, and public-funded dating, but not sleeping with a guide with public funds. Guides were too rare; regulations stipulated that only officers above the rank of colonel were eligible to attend blind date dances at guide schools. And that was just signing up; out of the twenty thousand officers with the rank of Federal Major, less than three thousand eventually qualified. Everyone had to be ranked based on their position, military merit, genetics, and other criteria, and only those at the forefront could go to Tungusic.
If a guide was marked without being ranked, he would be sent to a military court and could be exiled or even sentenced to death by electric shock! He was still young; he didn’t want to die.
But should he really refuse Haynes?
He had a mission, and he had finally obtained such a rare opportunity. If he gave up now, could he come up with a better way to infiltrate the research institute? And they had told him so many secrets; if he really refused, could he leave alive? Life was so miserable. Why did both options feel like death?
Yin Bo was going crazy, scratching his head until his blond hair fell to the ground. After a while, he asked, “You said you’re going to do embryo experiments. What if it fails? What are the consequences?”
“Oh, that’s a problem,” Haynes said candidly. “I can’t lie to you about this. If the experiment fails, your child may be deformed, and your body may also be affected. But listen to me, young man, with your conditions, you probably won’t get close to a guide in your lifetime. If you agree to stay and help us, you’ll have a chameleon guide. Even if you don’t have a child, your life will already be very lucky, won’t it? And guides can extend your lifespan by twice, enough to offset the physical harm from the experiment. What could be scarier than mania syndrome?”
There were plenty of things scarier than mania syndrome… But Yin Bo didn’t say it. He pondered for a long time, so long that Haynes was a bit impatient, before he gritted his teeth and said, “Okay, I agree with you. But I demand a contract with you, specifying a time period. I can’t stay here forever; what’s the use of having a guide if it’s like being in prison?”
“Of course, we can’t conduct a clinical trial for decades, and we’ll continue to find more volunteers for pairing,” Haynes said, opening a folder and handing him a stack of printed agreements. “This is our contract. Take a look. If you have no objections, sign it.”
Yin Bo carefully read through the contract and found it full of loopholes and traps, almost like they were burying him in a pit. But what the contract looked like didn’t matter to him; what mattered was that he needed to contact Jin Xuan immediately and plan the next steps to complete the mission as soon as possible.
So he didn’t hesitate to sign his name.
“You’re a straightforward person,” Haynes laughed like a fox, signing and stamping the contract, then handing him his copy. “Here’s yours.”
Taking the contract, Yin Bo rolled it up and tapped it on the table. “The contract stipulates that I have to stay here for five years. I need to contact my lawyer first and have him keep my contract safe. Otherwise, if something goes wrong, I won’t be able to defend myself. Do you agree?”
“Of course, that’s necessary,” Haynes nodded understandingly. “You can contact your lawyer and send the contract to him.”
“No need. I’ll give it to my boss, and he’ll take care of it,” Yin Bo said. “Can I call him now? It’s been almost six hours since I left the hotel. If he can’t find me, he might go to General Yuri. He might even call the police, which would be troublesome.”
“That’s not a problem.” Haynes stood up. “Follow me, young man. I’ll take you to the information room to make the call. But remember the confidentiality agreement you’ve signed. This research plan must not be disclosed to anyone, including your family. Understand?”
“I understand.”
Haynes led him to the second floor via an elevator and into an information room. “Alright, you can make the call here.”
“Um, could you step aside for a moment?” Yin Bo said.
“Of course.” Haynes nodded without hesitation, stepping out and even helping him close the door. Yin Bo knew why Haynes was so confident to leave; this information room was basically entirely transparent, filled with surveillance cameras everywhere. They weren’t afraid of any tricks he might pull.
But he was going to pull something. Yin Bo’s lips curled into a slight smile as he activated his personal terminal. While connecting to Jin Xuan’s ID, he used a hidden code to send all the footage he had captured with his smart eye earlier to Jin Xuan’s email.
Jin Xuan almost immediately responded to his communication. “Where have you been?! I’ve been looking for you everywhere for four hours, you damn directionless fool!”
Yin Bo grimaced. “Boss, I’m in trouble!”
“What now?” Jin Xuan barked impatiently. “What mess have you gotten yourself into this time?”
“I got lost and got caught by the military. Now I’m being held in a secret location.” Yin Bo didn’t mention his whereabouts due to the confidentiality agreement, nor did he mention words like “research institute.” “They said I violated the regulations here and are going to detain me!”
“What did you do to get yourself detained?” Jin Xuan’s tone on the other end was that of a superior dealing with a subordinate. “And we’re supposed to negotiate with General Yuri tomorrow. Are you bringing bad luck upon us?”
“I… I accidentally came across their top-secret documents, and now I have to stay here until the confidentiality period expires before I can leave Tartaros.”
“For how long?”
“… Five years.”
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, then Jin Xuan’s furious roar came through. “You idiot! You might as well just die in there!”
“Boss, I didn’t want this either, but they insisted I stay.” Yin Bo pleaded with a mournful expression. “I’ve already signed a contract with them, and they’ll send the documents to the hotel later. Please, ask my lawyer to take care of them for me. I’ll come find him in five years.”
Another moment of silence followed, then Jin Xuan, seemingly suppressing his anger, said, “Fine, I’ll talk to General Yuri and see if I can get you released.”
“It’s useless. They said even General Yuri can’t violate the regulations. Boss, I’m sorry.”
“What good is your apology!?” Jin Xuan snapped impatiently. “Fine, just stay in there for now. I’ll figure something out for you. And it’ll come out of your paycheck… You’re more trouble than you’re worth!”
“Oh…” Yin Bo sighed helplessly. Fortunately, the footage had all been transmitted. He bid Jin Xuan goodbye and ended the call.
Haynes walked in immediately afterward, evidently having monitored their entire conversation, and smiled knowingly. “Your boss seems quite caring about you, planning to help you find a way out.”
Yin Bo sighed. “He’s looking out for me.”
“It’s alright. Once he hits a wall, he’ll feel reassured to leave.” Haynes said, “Let’s go, you must be hungry. Mr. Kazumi Koyama wants to meet you, and you can have dinner together.”
Was this a setup for a bloodbath? Yin Bo just responded with an “Oh” and followed Haynes out of the information room door.
