Chapter 46: The Little Kit Who Told on His Daddy

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Editor: Karai

Yun Yingzhi arrived at the Starshine Competition arena. He could feel it the instant he stepped onto the field—all eyes turned to him. Especially the students from the Ten Great Military Academies, whose gazes burned with curiosity.

With his sharp hearing, he caught snippets of their whispers—everyone was trying to guess which student from Fansa Academy he might be. To keep his disguise safe, Yun Yingzhi endured the embarrassment and chose to wear the thick cotton three-piece outfit. Inwardly, he smirked. No matter how hard they guess, they’ll never figure me out!

Lifting his chin slightly, he thought he looked so different that not even Yun Yinghui or Yun Yingyao would recognize him. He had sacrificed a lot to keep that identity hidden.

As the proctor, Master Tang stood before the competitors and briefly explained the rules before the preliminaries began. A few students whispered among themselves, speculating that the master must be repeating the rules just in case Yun Yingzhi didn’t know them.

At exactly nine o’clock, the competition officially began.

Yun Yingzhi swept his gaze around the room, quietly studying the other contestants. Compared to the simple preliminary round, everyone’s attitude here was far more serious. The task was to create a full-defense-type source weapon. Many participants chose to make sixth-grade or higher models, each with a complex design and undoubtedly high quality.

Yun Yingzhi thought about the two gold-eating little ones waiting to be fed at home. He also remembered that Madam Yun had kicked him out of the Yun estate. Add to that the fact that he had entered Fansa Academy through the back door—the tuition alone was a small fortune every year. The more he thought about it, the more he felt he had to win this round.

Opening his personal terminal, Yun Yingzhi began sketching out his design for the full-defense source weapon.

By noon, a student in a Fansa Academy uniform walked over and asked in a low voice, “Hey, bro, wanna grab lunch together?”

At that exact moment, Yun Yingzhi’s stomach gave a loud rumble. He looked up to see who had spoken—it was an upperclassman from the fifth year of the source weapon engineering department.

“Come on, let’s eat together,” the student urged again.

Yun Yingzhi hesitated. If I go with them, I’ll have to take off my mask to eat. And if they recognize me… that would be a disaster.

“I’m not hungry,” he said flatly—only for his stomach to growl again in betrayal. The Fansa Academy students gave him some very complicated looks. Yun Yingzhi’s cheeks burned. Adjusting his bright red mask with his fingers, he muttered, “Sorry, I’m a little… inconvenient right now.”

The group left, clearly disappointed. Yun Yingzhi let out a quiet sigh of relief. His long ears twitched as he overheard their conversation.

“Why’d he turn us down? We’re all from the same academy.”

“He acts like he’s hiding from people.”

“Do we even have someone like that in our department?”

“His voice is nice, though. And his hands…”

“Now I really wanna know who he is.”

Yun Yingzhi shivered. He was terrified they’d connect the dots. At this point, he almost wished he had one of those full black hoods he’d seen robbers wear in old drama holovids—just pull it over and be done with it. He regretted his outfit choices deeply.

He returned to his designs and, during the last half hour of the break, finally dashed off to grab a quick meal. That was when reality struck him. Even without the two little ones still in his belly, his appetite hadn’t changed a bit. Those two little troublemakers were born now, stealing snacks whenever they could—but somehow, he was still eating like he was feeding three.

After eating his fill and wiping his mouth, Yun Yingzhi returned to the arena and resumed working on his design.

For defensive source weapons, he preferred the water element—gentle, adaptable, endlessly variable. Most people said water was the weakest esper element. Compared to earth or ice, water’s defense lacked hardness; compared to combat-type espers, water users were famously “soft.” Yun Yingzhi, a fire-type esper himself, knew better than anyone that, when used properly, water could be incredibly powerful.

By around two in the afternoon, he finally completed his design draft. Compared to his usual projects, this one had taken less than five hours—but every stroke of it carried traces of his childhood worry for Yun Yinghui.

Back then, he hadn’t understood the difference between water and ice. Yun Yinghui was an offensive ice-type esper, destined for the military. When little Yun Yingzhi learned that, he had been filled with anxiety—afraid that one day, his brother would be sent to the frontlines without any way to protect himself. So he’d started designing defensive source weapons.

Water shields, water houses, water towers… all the way up to his proudest creation, the Water Fortress. And then he found out—none of those worked for ice-type espers. Ice simply didn’t suit layered defense like water did. For ice users, overwhelming strength was the best defense. Realizing that, he’d abandoned the idea of pursuing defensive engravings altogether.

Still, the concept had never really left his mind. So when this opportunity arose, he picked it back up—not to “farm the system” for materials, but to genuinely design something new. After all, farming took time; slow and steady wins the most wool.

Design finished, he headed to the materials vending machine. The preliminaries had no rank restrictions. He could choose to make a level-five or level-six weapon, and to be safe, he chose level six—the competition was fierce enough as it was.

In the first round, someone had even managed to craft a level-seven weapon. This time, he wouldn’t be surprised to see an eight. He began hauling his first batch of materials.

Some contestants noticed him and whispered, “He’s really strong.”

Yun Yingzhi paused mid-step, considering. In Fansa Academy’s gossip, he was known as frail and helpless. Maybe if he acted stronger, they’d be less likely to associate him with himself. So, after carrying the first load, he went back and effortlessly picked up more—moving at an impressive speed.

Once his materials were in place, he began crafting. When he entered production mode, Yun Yingzhi became completely focused, oblivious to everything around him. He processed the materials, then started the engraving sequence.

To save on resources, he began from the most basic layer—a water screen. Each subsequent engraving built on the last, forming the base for a water house, then a water tower, and finally… a fortress. His philosophy was simple: not a single scrap of material wasted. The final fortress would be a masterpiece made entirely from “free upgrades.”

His mind slipped into a half-conscious flow. He often worked like that—sometimes it went terribly, costing him a fortune, but when it succeeded, it elevated the weapon’s power beyond expectations. This time was no different. When he came to, he realized he’d instinctively optimized the weapon mid-process—adding another ability.

He blinked down at the completed piece, dumbfounded. As a self-proclaimed delicate little bunny, he much preferred offensive engravings. But somehow, his “defensive” weapon…had developed a combat-type final skill. It was, in short, a man-eating fortress.

Yun Yingzhi could already imagine the live-broadcast comments once it was evaluated: “Contestant A13167 is feral! Just as expected of him—always ready for war!”

“Total battle maniac!”

His eyelid twitched violently. He wasn’t like that! He loved peace! He just appreciated strong offensive tools—that didn’t make him a warmonger! But there was no way to explain that without making things worse. He stared at the weapon, falling into deep thought.

By then, it was already eight in the evening. He was starving. Had it really taken him five or six hours just to make this one “defensive” weapon? Another one? No way. Life was too short. He’d rather spend the time making a few quick, easy weapons. Still, should he hand this one in?

He hesitated. On one hand, he didn’t want to deepen the public’s misconception of him. On the other, this creation technically didn’t fit the contest’s rules—it was supposed to be a full-defense weapon. The strongest skill was clearly offensive… but maybe, as long as he didn’t say anything—no one would find out.

He eyed it nervously. The final engraving sequence was complex enough that unless someone knew source weapon engravings inside out, they’d never activate that last mark.

Perfect. He could relax. Feeling reassured, Yun Yingzhi returned to “farming” materials—no, to steadily crafting more limited-space source weapons. Meanwhile, the live-broadcast comment feed was buzzing.

“Red Peony’s taking so long—I can’t wait to see what he’s making!”

“Of course he’s violent! Born to fight! He probably can’t even make a real defensive weapon.”

“Doesn’t matter, I’m still excited to see the final result!”

“Daily question: has anyone at Fansa Academy unmasked Red Peony yet?”

“Manifesting mask reveal #1!”

Gifts and tips poured in nonstop. Before he knew it, Yun Yingzhi had finished processing another large batch of materials. Then came the announcement, “Contestants, please clear the area. The next round begins tomorrow.”

Gathering his things, Yun Yingzhi tidied his workspace and quickly headed out of the arena. He possessed a constitution far beyond that of an ordinary person. When he charged forward with all his focus, the source weapon manufacturing students who wanted to return to Fansa Academy with Yun Yingzhi were left dumbfounded for a moment. They instinctively tried to follow, but in the blink of an eye, the man had vanished from sight. The Fansa Academy students looked at each other in disbelief. One of them muttered, “With that kind of speed, isn’t he basically a combat student?”

The entire venue fell silent for a few seconds.

“Don’t talk nonsense. We’ve never heard of a combat student being able to crush us in the source weapon manufacturing field.”

Another student sighed. “Then we’ve really embarrassed ourselves.”

“True enough.”

Yun Yingzhi found himself missing his two little ones. He wondered if the two little ones had behaved while he’d been gone all day. He stopped by the hotel first, changed out of his cotton three-piece outfit, then returned to First Hospital.

By then, it was already ten o’clock at night. Considering that both little ones were probably asleep, Yun Yingzhi opened the ward door quietly. Almost the moment the door opened, the little kit lying sprawled across Yun Yinghui’s chest opened his eyes and looked straight at Yun Yingzhi. At the same time, the little egg inside the incubator gave a jump.

Both little ones were highly sensitive. The instant they sensed an unfamiliar presence, they woke up. Tears immediately welled up in the little kit’s eyes, spilling down his cheeks as he rolled off Yun Yinghui’s chest and threw himself toward Yun Yingzhi.

Yun Yingzhi’s speed showed itself once again. Under Yun Yinghui’s helpless gaze, he caught the flying little kit neatly in his arms. The little kit sat in Yun Yingzhi’s palm, stretching out his tiny paws to point first at Yun Yinghui, then toward the door.

Yun Yingzhi had no idea what the little kit was trying to say. Inside the incubator, the little egg activated his spatial ability and successfully hopped out. The little kit’s gaze shifted toward him. His tears stopped instantly, and he released a spatial lock skill.

In a split second, the little egg—who had been preparing to teleport into Yun Yingzhi’s arms—was forced to halt where he was.

At that moment, Yun Yingzhi, Yun Yinghui, and the little kit all turned their gazes toward the egg at once. Yun Yinghui couldn’t help sighing inwardly. The little egg had just been born, yet he already knew how to drag Yun Yingzhi into the bathroom alone. Now, the little kit, in order to monopolize his father’s embrace, had sealed off space itself so the spatial-traveling egg couldn’t reach him. These were truly two jealous little ones who both wanted their daddy all to themselves.

Unable to speak and lacking legs, the little egg bounced furiously in place several times to show just how angry he was. The little kit glared at him. “Aww!”

The little egg bounced twice more, then his round little body began to roll—rolling straight toward Yun Yingzhi. The little kit stomped his tiny paws angrily. “Aww!”

Yun Yingzhi immediately scooped up the little egg. The egg rolled and rolled until he reached Yun Yingzhi’s collar, where he slipped inside and left only the tip of his shell poking out.

That made the little kit even angrier. His fur puffed up, and he let out several indignant “aww” sounds at the little egg. The egg paused, then wiggled downward slightly. From Yun Yinghui’s angle, the little egg’s shell tip disappeared from view. The little kit grew even more furious. He climbed up Yun Yingzhi’s arm and burrowed inside his collar too. Then, inside Yun Yingzhi’s clothes, one bunny and one egg started to fight.

Yun Yingzhi took a deep breath, trying to pull the two squabbling ones out, his voice sharp. “No fighting!”

The two little ones froze mid-brawl under his clothes, shivering and not daring to move. Yun Yingzhi pulled them out, one in each hand. The little kit glared at the egg. “Aww!”

The egg tried to bounce, but since Yun Yingzhi was holding him, he couldn’t move. Yun Yingzhi looked at the little kit. “Jiaojiao, don’t yell at your little brother.”

The egg paused, then flipped onto his back in Yun Yingzhi’s palm, gazing up at him with round black eyes. His voice was soft and milky. “Da?”

Yun Yingzhi placed the little egg back into the incubator. Then, holding the incubator in one hand and the little kit in the other, he sat down on the bed and looked toward Yun Yinghui. “Brother, were the two little ones good today?”

Yun Yinghui’s eyelid twitched. Images of the Little Bun running wild in the palace flashed through his mind. He had a feeling that if things kept going like this, Jarren and the Imperial Consort would spoil those two little creatures beyond redemption—two tiny bears on the verge of chaos. When Yun Yinghui didn’t answer, Yun Yingzhi said, “So the two little ones weren’t good.”

Yun Yinghui thought, at least Yun Yingzhi still had some self-awareness. Yun Yingzhi began lecturing the two. The little egg lay obediently in the incubator, motionless like a dead egg. Yun Yingzhi poked the little kit with a finger, and the little kit immediately grabbed the offered finger with both paws and feet, cooing softly. “Da?”

Yun Yingzhi thought, even if the little kit acted all cute and pitiful, he still had to keep lecturing. Yun Yinghui found Yun Yingzhi far too strict. But as the uncle, it wasn’t really his place to interfere with how Yun Yingzhi disciplined his kids.

After a pause, he said, “Zhizhi, I got the one-year vacation.”

He couldn’t really step in on how Yun Yingzhi raised two children who didn’t even understand human speech yet, but he could at least redirect the man’s focus. As expected, Yun Yingzhi’s attention shifted immediately, his eyes lighting up.

Yun Yinghui glanced at the two little ones from the corner of his eye and added, “The source weapon association hopes you can come over and collaborate with them.”

Yun Yingzhi’s first reaction was that it sounded fine—he could do that. Then came his second thought. Hmm? Something about it felt off. After thinking for a moment, he finally realized what it was. Perhaps others didn’t know, but the source weapon association’s masters and grandmasters definitely did. He was the A13167 participant in the Starshine Competition—after all, they could see his inscriptions.

That meant, in order not to reveal his true identity, when he went to the source weapon association, he’d still have to wear the cotton three-piece outfit to participate in discussions? For a brief moment, Yun Yingzhi felt like banging his head against the wall. He regretted buying that middle-aged favorite three-piece set.

Yun Yinghui asked, “Zhizhi, is that okay?”

Yun Yingzhi sniffled, looking at Yun Yinghui, who had been playing dad, mom, and older brother for him, and now was also father, mother, and uncle for the two little ones, and he felt… This little thing… He could handle it! He was fine! Yun Yingzhi sniffled again, nodded heavily, and said, “I think I can do it.”

The little kit blinked, looking at Yun Yinghui, then at Yun Yingzhi. “Da?”

After a moment, the little kit patted Yun Yingzhi. Yun Yingzhi looked down at him. The little kit began gesturing with his paws, and Yun Yingzhi couldn’t understand what he was saying at all. But… Yun Yinghui, as a “male mom,” subtly understood what the little kit was trying to convey.

According to Yun Yinghui’s interpretation, the little kit was expressing in “da-da-ao-ao” language that he had encountered two incredibly powerful people today. Those two had squished him, so he “ao-ed” at them. The little kit then pointed at Yun Yinghui.

Yun Yinghui interpreted this as: the little kit meant that Yun Yinghui alone couldn’t possibly beat those two super-strong people, and only with Dad joining in could victory be achieved.

Yun Yinghui: “…” Wait, how could he understand the little kit’s “ao-da” language?

What made Yun Yinghui even more speechless was that the little egg in the incubator seemed to understand the little kit as well, occasionally hopping in rhythm, as if to echo, “Yes, yes, that’s it.”

Yun Yingzhi looked at Yun Yinghui, puzzled. “Brother, what’s Jiaojiao saying?”

Yun Yinghui, having fully interpreted the little kit, paused. “I don’t know.”

Yun Yingzhi’s gaze grew confused.

The little kit grew anxious. “Da-da-da!”

Yun Yingzhi patted the little kit’s head. “It’s time for you to sleep.”

The little kit was a bit unwilling and wanted to continue tattling to Yun Yingzhi.

Having woken up early, Yun Yingzhi was very tired. He handed the little kit to Yun Yinghui and went into the bathroom to wash up. The little egg, seeing Yun Yingzhi discard the little kit, happily spun around in the incubator. The little kit saw this, immediately climbed down from Yun Yinghui’s arms, skillfully opened the incubator, and dove in. One little bunny and one little egg started squabbling again.

Yun Yinghui twitched at the corner of his mouth and hurried forward to stop the two little ones. After Yun Yingzhi finished his “combat shower” and came out, the little kit immediately waddled over again, patted Yun Yingzhi, and continued to tattle. Yun Yingzhi lay down on the bed, patted the continuously tattling little kit, and closed his eyes to sleep. The little kit: “Da?”

He patted Yun Yingzhi, trying to wake him up. He patted Yun Yingzhi again, but still couldn’t rouse him. The little egg happily spun in the incubator. The little kit let out an “ao” toward the incubator, looked at Yun Yinghui, and began “da-da-da” tattling.

Yun Yinghui patiently nestled the little kit into the crook of his neck. “Mm, Uncle knows. Good child, Jiaojiao, it’s time for bed.”

The little kit wriggled out and began a new round of gesturing toward Yun Yinghui. Yun Yinghui patiently tucked the little kit back again. After some back-and-forth, the little kit tiredly settled, pressing against Yun Yingzhi’s neck to fall asleep. The two little ones had been noisy for so long that by the time Yun Yingzhi left in the morning, they were completely still.

Yun Yingzhi changed into his black-and-red peony cotton three-piece outfit and arrived at the competition venue on time. He didn’t waste any time and immediately started manufacturing source weapons in assembly-line fashion. Time passed rapidly. By the end of the day, he had produced twelve level six source weapons.

At nine o’clock in the evening, a prompt sounded, instructing all participants to stop what they were doing. Master Tang said, “Now, please use the next twenty minutes to write down the skills of your source weapons.”

Yun Yingzhi froze for a moment, not understanding why this rule suddenly appeared. As he wondered, Master Tang explained, “In the previous preliminary round, the final skill of the source weapon created by participant A13167 could not be fully assessed by our evaluators. To avoid a similar situation, from the preliminary round onward, each participant must write down every skill of their source weapon in detail, which also helps the judges in their assessment.”

Yun Yingzhi’s eyelid twitched. One of the competition rules: all source weapons must be fully defensive… He felt a little uneasy. But then he thought, considering that the judges hadn’t been able to assess the final skill of even his previous four-level source weapon, as long as he didn’t say anything, this final skill should remain concealed. Thinking this, Yun Yingzhi instantly relaxed. He opened his personal terminal and introduced his source weapons as required by the competition:

Name: None

Level: Six

Type: Defensive source weapon

Suitable esper soldier: a warrior with water-element abilities

First skill name: None

Skill effect: Deploy defensive water curtain

Second skill name: None

Skill effect…

…

In under twenty minutes, Yun Yingzhi deliberately concealed the final skill’s effect, then submitted the source weapon. The staff approached and collected each long-range weapon one by one.

What was a bit subtle was that the staff member who had collected Yun Yingzhi’s source weapons smiled and said, “Sir, I wonder why you didn’t participate in the competition a few days ago?”

Yun Yingzhi: “Ah?”

The staff member continued, “Considering that the preliminary round lasts seven days, in order to make it convenient for you to manufacture more source weapons, we specially prepared a large amount of six-level source materials.”

Under his mask, Yun Yingzhi’s face instantly turned bright red. He understood the implied meaning behind the words. —We know you’ll want to ‘milk’ the system, so we specially prepared materials for you to ‘milk.’ In the live broadcast room, everyone burst into laughter.

After submitting the source weapons, Yun Yingzhi, just like yesterday, ran like the wind, astonishing everyone with his incredible speed.

On the way back to the hospital, Yun Yingzhi was contacted by the Starshine Competition organizers. Source weapon assessment would last four days, from December 28th to December 31st. All source weapons from the preliminary round would first undergo an initial assessment by the organizers. Then, starting at nine o’clock on the morning of the 28th, a large number of source weapons would be assessed simultaneously.

Yun Yingzhi would be at the first competition hall, and if nothing unexpected happened, the source weapons he manufactured would be in the first batch for assessment—that is, tomorrow. If Yun Yingzhi had a suitable esper soldier, the organizers asked that the participant arrive at the assessment hall before 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Yun Yingzhi thought that among Yun Yinghui’s friends, the most capable water-element esper soldier was Jia Qingwan. Level eight, coincidentally also a defensive water-element esper soldier. Yun Yingzhi immediately contacted Yun Yinghui to relay the matter.

Yun Yinghui gave a confirming response: tomorrow Jia Qingwan would arrive at the assessment hall on time. He also said, “Zhizhi, send the skills of that source weapon to Qingwan.”

Yun Yingzhi blinked and looked over the previously written source weapon introduction. After triple-checking, he confirmed that it indeed did not include the activation method for the final attack-element skill of the source weapon. Good. No mistakes. He wasn’t some battle-obsessed violent bunny! He absolutely would not mess up!

Yun Yingzhi confidently sent the document to Yun Yinghui. Yun Yinghui then forwarded it to Jia Qingwan. Everything was ready, waiting only for tomorrow’s assessment.
