Chapter 23: Confession

The next day, when Lyss opened his eyes, the sunlight outside felt unusually harsh. Glancing at the time, he realized it was already noon. The terminal displayed numerous unread messages, with one from the doctor automatically pinned, inquiring about his estrus condition and urging both him and Lu Xingye to come for a check-up today or tomorrow.
Seeing the doctor’s reminder, memories from last night gradually resurfaced. Recollections of how an alpha had strategically withdrawn and then managed to free himself from confinement…
At this point, Lyss instinctively pursed his lips. He hadn’t yet mastered human shame, but being in a situation where his senses were entirely controlled by another person made him uncomfortable. The dominant one had never anticipated being overridden, offended, or restrained. The feeling of being encroached upon by a younger individual made him subconsciously feel offended.
Just as Lyss was contemplating this, there was a knock on the bedroom door. Lyss collected his thoughts and said, “Come in.”
Lu Xingye entered the room, and Lyss noticed a prominent mark on his neck, furrowing his brows. “What happened to your neck?”
“Your Excellency,” Lu Xingye spoke with a mix of grievance and amusement, “you did it yourself. Why deny it now that you’ve gotten out of bed?”
Lyss widened his eyes slightly, suddenly recalling what he should have forgotten. “…I did it. I remember now, but I can only say it serves you right.”
“Indeed, I deserved it,” Lu Xingye chuckled like a fox stealing a meal. “I almost made my lord upset; I got what I deserved.”
Instinctively, Lyss understood the meaning behind Lu Xingye’s words, despite his own dullness after days of being together. What he said last night was something he said to prevent Lu Xingye from speaking himself, something heartfelt at the moment because the estrus period had ended. Overwhelming sensations would disrupt his code, causing a temporary malfunction, or ‘upset.’
Lyss intended to stop it, but what surprised him was that as soon as that word slipped out, Lu Xingye became as spirited as if injected with chicken blood. Finally catching a hint, Lyss pursed his lips and didn’t continue the topic. “The doctor wants us to go for a check-up within the next few days, coinciding with the end of our holiday. You’ll come with me today.”
“Okay,” Lu Xingye agreed without much thought. But then he changed the subject, “But could Dr. Qiu have leaked your information before?”
Lyss neither confirmed nor denied, “I’ll find out when I go this time.”
The entire upper echelon of Triss knew about Lyss and his little alpha taking a vacation together. At the medical center, the doctor looked at them without much surprise but glanced at Lu Xingye with some complexity, as if looking at a lucky, glowing young man.
As usual, the doctor conducted a full-body examination on Lyss first before proceeding to a few screenings for Lu Xingye. When the results came out, there wasn’t much in Lu Xingye’s report, but the doctor’s expression became somewhat subtle after seeing Lyss’s report.
Lu Xingye became nervous all of a sudden. “Is there a problem?”
The doctor hesitated, “It’s not a big problem, just…”
Lyss calmly interjected, “Am I pregnant?”
Lu Xingye nearly jumped in shock, turning to look at Lyss, but Lyss’s expression was incredibly serene, as if what he just said was as inconsequential as commenting on the weather.
“Of course not.” The doctor was also surprised, then quickly added, “Pregnancy can only be detected ten days after. Has it been ten days since the first reproductive encounter?”
While Lu Xingye was reckless on the bed, at this moment, he perked up to listen attentively.
“Not yet ten days.” Lyss calmly replied, “It’s been five days since the first time and since the last time…”
At this point, Lyss suddenly paused, finding it hard to continue.
The doctor asked, “When was the last time?”
Lu Xingye cleared his throat and reluctantly admitted to his own deeds, “…Yesterday.”
“That’s what I wanted to say,” the doctor said sternly, “Do not engage too forcefully outside of the estrus period. The results are not severe for now, but continued behavior like this could lead to a series of unforeseen consequences.”
Blushing, Lu Xingye obediently lowered his head, receiving the scolding. “I’ll remember. I won’t do it again.”
The doctor then turned to Lyss. “Sir, please bear this in mind as well.”
Lyss didn’t care much. “As long as he remembers.”
The doctor immediately caught the implication behind Lyss’s words, hesitated for a moment, almost asking: Do you only intend to have this one alpha?
In the end, he held back and changed the subject. “Your estrus period has completely ended. Hormone and pheromone levels have returned to normal. But as suspected from the beginning, apart from the end of the estrus period, there are no signs of being marked.”
Lyss nodded. “I know.”
The doctor hesitated to speak further, eventually sighing. “The compatibility between you two is ninety-nine percent. In theory, once entered into the reproductive cavity, the chance of pregnancy is ninety-nine percent.”
Lyss nodded again. “That’s why I’m here today for another reason. It happened suddenly, and I didn’t have contraceptives with me. Do you have them here?”
Lu Xingye hesitated. He knew this was a standard choice, yet he couldn’t help but glance over.
“We do, but you don’t need to take them. That’s also what I’m about to explain.” The doctor replied solemnly, “Compatibility is a concept that is only established upon complete marking. If there’s no way to achieve complete marking, then unfortunately, you may… not be able to conceive.”
At this statement, the room fell into an instant silence.
Lu Xingye’s ears visibly drooped, yet he tried to maintain a composed expression on his face.
Lyss paused upon hearing this. “You mean, regardless of who, I can never have my own offspring?”
“In theory, yes. Unless you find someone who can fully mark you.” The doctor nodded. “I speculate this might be the final implication of evolution. There was once a hypothesis proposed by an ancient scientist, suggesting that individuals exist as consumable entities for genetic reproduction. When an individual completes their final evolution, they eventually break free from genetic constraints, choosing sterility to prevent descendants from encroaching on their interests, ensuring self-preservation and development.”
The doctor referred to a hypothesis widely accepted among the “evolutionists,” stating that any creature, once reaching its final form through evolution, would opt to stop reproduction.
Lyss’s thoughts didn’t align with this. He knew his situation had nothing to do with evolution. On the contrary, he thought of a widely acknowledged law: artificial beings cannot be cloned, let alone have offspring. There was a time in human society when artificial beings could legally exist. During that era, the Chudai System was still operational and humans ceased allowing artificial beings to have descendants.
Human laws were never superficial; perhaps, in their design, artificial beings were denied the right to reproduce.
However, all of this was speculation based on whether the doctor was lying.
Ultimately, Lyss didn’t ask anything more. “That’s fine. Descendants hold no meaning; they’re just stumbling blocks on the path of individual survival.”
The doctor sincerely smiled, saying, “There aren’t many people like the Chief who are solely devoted to the federation.”
Lyss didn’t respond to the compliment. He rose from his seat and without looking back at Lu Xingye, he stated, “Let’s go.”
Lu Xingye had been sitting quietly until then, his expression unreadable. But upon hearing Lyss’s words, he snapped out of his reverie, immediately standing up as though awakening from a deep slumber.
“Thank you for today,” Lyss said to the doctor. “Let me know if there are any research results.”
The doctor hurriedly stood up to see them off, “Of course, Chief. Goodbye.”
On their way back, Lu Xingye didn’t speak a word. Approaching noon and without time to cook, they had their first meal together outside.
The restaurant owner observed Lyss and Lu Xingye with a mix of surprise and uncertainty, seemingly shocked that the esteemed Chief had graced their humble establishment. The owner cautiously watched them, noticing that the two didn’t exchange a single word throughout their meal.
It wasn’t until they returned home after showering that Lu Xingye awkwardly asked, “Do you prefer a daughter or a son?”
“…I haven’t thought about that,” Lyss, just out of the shower, casually replied. “What about you? Do you prefer a daughter or a son?”
“I prefer a daughter,” Lu Xingye responded without hesitation. “When I was a child, I didn’t understand much. I used to tell my mom I wanted a daughter, and she always laughed at me. Later, I understood that under current laws, the right to conceive belongs to the gestator. Betas and omegas can have their children using artificial wombs, but alphas can’t have children on their own unless they have the gestator’s permission. Now it seems, that idea is impossible.”
“You’re only eighteen,” Lyss replied. “You’ll have plenty of opportunities in the future. Don’t worry.”
Lu Xingye was momentarily stunned, then smiled bitterly. “You really don’t understand what I mean, Chief. Sometimes, I wonder if you’re an artificial being or just a puppet created from data code, devoid of any emotions.”
Lyss was taken aback. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Lu Xingye sighed, then unexpectedly earnestly said, “I’ll never have my own child in this lifetime.”
Lyss seemed to grasp something. He looked up into Lu Xingye’s sincere eyes.
“Do you still not understand?” Lu Xingye gazed into his eyes earnestly. “Lyss, I like you.”
