Chapter 68: Vulnerable Period

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Lyss was in shock and grief. Upon hearing this, he didn’t know how to respond for a moment. After a while, he asked, “How much does he owe you?”

Qiu thought for a moment and said, “The total surgical fee is thirty million star coins. He claimed his account isn’t in his hands. Up to now, he’s only given me ten million, owing me twenty million.”

Lyss promptly pulled out his terminal, “I’ll pay you.”

It was as if a pie fell from the sky. Qiu’s composed expression cracked a bit. In disbelief, she said, “You’ll pay for him?”

Lyss nodded confidently, “His account is with me.”

Qiu suddenly understood, “So that’s it… I thought those rumors were true.”

As she spoke, she took out her own terminal. Just as Lyss was about to make the payment, she heard him say, “What rumors?”

Qiu was quite honest, “Lu, that rabbit friend, once told me that you’ve been supporting him.”

After a three-second silence, Lyss transferred the money without continuing the conversation, “Where are the things he wants to give me?”

“In there,” Qiu said but persisted, “Do you really not want this body? If you don’t, I’ll destroy it.”

Her persistence seemed excessive to Lyss. Feeling odd, Lyss asked, “What did he tell you before? After the final payment, destroy the body or keep it for other purposes?”

Qiu paused for three seconds before saying, “Originally, our verbal agreement was to destroy it after the final payment. But not long ago, he changed his mind, advising me not to act rashly. I suspect he has other plans. I don’t want to get involved in your affairs. I’m just here to do business. I’m not aware of anything else. So, if you can take this body, please do so as soon as possible.”

With this explanation, Lyss suddenly understood Lu Xingye’s intentions for leaving the body behind.

“Alright, I’ll take it later,” Lyss said, glancing at the closed-eyed body. He turned and followed Qiu. “What are the consequences of the first failed surgery? Any lingering effects?”

As they walked inside, Qiu said, “It caused irreversible damage to some areas of the cerebral cortex, but the symptoms were relatively mild. After a certain period of treatment, the damage was minimized. Haven’t you observed his living conditions? He probably can’t smell anything other than your pheromones. His sense of taste might have degraded. In short, he can’t taste or smell anything else, but everything else is normal.”

Lyss suddenly paused—Lu Xingye couldn’t smell anything?! Memories flooded his mind, yet even after recalling Lu Xingye’s return, he didn’t notice any clues. He even cooked many meals for Lin Lang, perfectly seasoned and delicious.

It wasn’t until Qiu stopped that Lyss managed to find the strength to speak, “Is there a chance for him to recover from this condition?”

Qiu pondered for a moment, “For that, you’ll need consultation from specialized doctors. It’s likely a combination of low pheromone intake and post-surgery effects. Maybe if you regularly expose him to pheromones, it might alleviate the condition a bit. But complete recovery is probably impossible. Don’t worry too much; he seems unconcerned. What he asked me to give you is more important than these trivial matters.”

With that, Qiu pushed open a metal door behind her, revealing a massive space transmission platform inside. Its black shell gleamed metallically, with silver-white dots shimmering within.

“This is the latest generation of space transmission platforms, developed based on the previous model. There are currently only two in the entire interstellar, one here and one in the Empire. Their functions are quite limited; they can only transfer between each other. But it should suffice for your needs.”

Lyss walked directly towards the transmission platform and stood outside the chamber, asking, “Where is the one in the empire installed?”

“In his home’s basement,” Qiu contemplated, “Lu asked for some isolation materials. I’m not sure if his place is monitored, but the basement should be safe. Are you planning to go find him now?”

Lyss nodded, “Yes, I’m short on time.”

“There are operation instructions inside, but long-distance space transmissions might cause dizziness. And you’re pregnant…”

Lyss interrupted, “It’s okay.”

Seeing his determination, Qiu didn’t say more, “Just follow the operating instructions. I’ll leave. Don’t contact me again for anything. I have a lot to do and want to live for a few more years.”

Lyss nodded, “Thank you.”

Qiu waved and left without turning back.

Lyss opened the chamber door and walked into the transmission platform. Inside, there was a small chip and a card reader. Instead of taking the reader, he directly used the chip to access and read the operating instructions.

Lyss didn’t act immediately; he just glanced at the control panel, and the chamber door slowly closed.

“Warning, space transmission is about to commence. Please take precautions.”

After three warnings, the chamber started the engine. Lyss felt a dizzying sensation, closing his eyes abruptly. Outside the chamber, space twisted abruptly as if sucked into a rift in time and space. After an unknown period, the intense shaking gradually subsided.

Lyss slowly opened his eyes, facing darkness outside with no trace of light. Once the transmission platform stabilized, he pushed open the chamber door and stepped out. This basement seemed different from the one he accidentally stumbled upon last time. It was dimly lit, very cramped.

After scanning around, he found a door. As he walked towards it, he caught faint murmurs from behind it, causing him to stop in his tracks. The soundproofing here was excellent, but for Lyss, it made no difference.

“Your Highness… You’re currently in a vulnerable period. Using a large amount of suppressants will have an impact on your body.”

Lu Xingye’s indifferent voice replied, “I know. How long can this suppressant last?”

“You—” Another voice seemed to be Lu Xingye’s personal doctor. After a pause, he said helplessly, “Your body has developed resistance. This suppressant is already at its maximum dosage but can only last half a day at most.”

Lu Xingye chuckled lightly, but his laughter carried a hint of danger. “Half a day is enough.”

“…Instability in pheromone levels can cause significant mood swings, leading to unnecessary trouble,” the doctor advised. “If your omega is nearby, his soothing presence might be more effective.”

“He’s busy. He won’t bother about such matters,” Lu Xingye seemed uninterested in continuing this conversation. ‘Alright, go back. Remember to keep quiet about what shouldn’t be said. You can leave.’

His tone wasn’t pleasant, clearly indicating his mood wasn’t great.

An alpha’s vulnerable period differs from an omega’s estrus period. The vulnerable period lacks a set pattern, lasts relatively longer, and during this time, alphas may exhibit varying degrees of restlessness and irritability. Some alphas with a mate might display behavior different from their usual if they don’t receive their mate’s comfort.

The doctor seemed to realize Lu Xingye was unyielding. He didn’t say anything further and left.

Lyss heard a series of footsteps outside, followed by the closing of a door. The doctor must have departed.

Soon after, all that remained was the increasingly heavy breathing of Lu Xingye. Without listening further, Lyss pushed the door and stepped out. Startled by the commotion behind him, Lu Xingye abruptly turned, “Who—?!… Brother?”

He widened his eyes in disbelief, seemingly unable to fathom that Lyss stood before him at this moment.

“You…” Lu Xingye’s cautious demeanor, seemingly afraid to shatter the apparent dream, contrasted sharply with his impatience moments before. “Why did you come?”

“Weren’t you the one who called me?” Lyss took off his cloak and draped it over the side, as he walked toward Lu Xingye. “Vulnerable period?”

Lu Xingye, yet to realize the danger, was drowned in surprise and excitement, momentarily transforming his anguish during the vulnerable period into relief. “Yeah… It started a few days ago. I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you’d worry.” Lu Xingye hooked his arm around Lyss, trying to bury himself in his embrace. “Brother… I feel terrible…”

Lyss leaned against him, silent, just observing the small, whimpering figure in his arms. When Lu Xingye felt Lyss’s silence, he paused for a moment, then said with a slight grievance, “Wife—”

In the middle of speaking, Lu Xingye suddenly stopped. He carefully released the person in his embrace and stared, unblinking, at Lyss’s abdomen. “It’s been a month?”

“Yeah, it’s been a month.” Lyss replied calmly. “It’s a girl.”

Lu Xingye was momentarily stunned, but upon regaining his senses, his eyes sparkled brightly. “I’ve already decided on the name—”

Lyss raised a hand to his forehead. “Why didn’t you tell me you couldn’t smell?”

Lu Xingye’s jubilant expression froze on his face. Lyss gently pinched his ear. “I recall you said there was nothing left for you to hide from me.”

Lu Xingye’s ears perked up, and after three seconds, his expression slowly deflated. “…Qiu told you everything. Why did she tell you everything?”

“Because I paid off your debt to her,” Lyss said.

“What?!” Lu Xingye exclaimed.

“So,” Lyss looked at him and declared, “I am now your new creditor.”

Lu Xingye was dumbfounded, taking a while before asking, “How much did you pay for me?”

“Everything,” Lyss replied.

Lu Xingye had even forgotten about this. After recalling how much he owed, he hastily said, “There should still be some money in my previous account. Let me pay you back—”

Lyss interrupted, “I used the money from your account.”

He sounded too self-assured, causing Lu Xingye to falter. He spoke with less confidence, “You used the money from my previous account?… So, you’re my creditor?”

“Yes, your money is my money,” Lyss stated matter-of-factly. “Any problems?”

After a moment’s pause, Lu Xingye hurriedly shook his head. “No problems. Whatever the creditor says.”

Lyss nodded reluctantly. “Then, take off your clothes. Let’s resolve this quickly.”

Lu Xingye suddenly looked up, incredulous. “—?!”

Lyss remained calm. “Let’s deal with your vulnerable period first, then we’ll talk about other things.”
