Chapter 62: Gene Lock

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Editor: Mimosa

Yu Hanzhou took him to another place to live. This place was not as grand as the Admiral’s residence, and it was at the end of the bridge towering into the clouds. It had a bit of a ‘garden in the sky’ feel to it. Yu Hanzhou told him that the new residence was still under construction, so he could only stay here for the next two months.

Due to this intention, the wedding date was also forcefully delayed. The body fell onto the soft bed, and the little dragon pulled the big dragon’s arm which he rested the side of his forehead on while nuzzling.

Yu Hanzhou made him the usual fish soup with some sizzling diced beef that he brought up to the bedroom. He fed him this time, and the little dragon seemed to be very well behaved as he sat on the bed eating everything. He also obediently drank a full cup of juice. After wiping his mouth clean, he carried Ming Huan to the strange bathroom.

The familiar scent of incense was already inside. This greatly relieved the little dragon’s resistance to the unfamiliar environment. Everything seemed to have changed, and it also seemed to have not changed. The bathroom was slightly pushed open, and Ming Huan saw the white curtain that was slightly lifted by the wind.

Yu Hanzhou’s back was integrated with the appearance of the night on the terrace. His hair was darker than Ming Huan’s when he was in human form, and it was a dark brown like espresso. His eyebrows were like swords and his eye sockets were deep. He had a cold, hard, and unfriendly look.

Although there had already been two marking acts, if they shared the same bed now, he would still feel awkward. Tonight, Yu Hanzhou obviously had no intention of asking him to sleep in a separate room.

Ming Huan hugged his knees and soaked in the bath. His nose and mouth were soaked in the tub as he snorted and blew bubbles. The frosted glass was pulled away, and the little dragon’s face lifted from the pile of foam. The tip of his nose was still covered with a snow-white foam, “Fuck, what….”

“The wedding venue is not yet picked.”

“Just choose….” Ming Huan buried his body into the bubbles.

Yu Hanzhou directly picked up the little dragon who was flushed like a peach blossom, “It’s our wedding, you choose.”

After carrying him to the bed and applying medicine to his tiny wounds, his hands were gentle. When he applied the pain cream, it was more like tickling, which made him giggle several times. Ming Huan lay on his stomach as he opened the terminal, and used Yu Hanzhou’s permission to unlock some of the Military Department’s high-privilege files.

Since the last time he touched the Military Department’s classified documents by mistake and alerted others, Yu Hanzhou raised his secret access level to that of a mid-level officer, and he allowed Ming Huan to use his permissions to tune in where there were restrictions on his access. Ming Huan seemed to be interested in these.

Yu Hanzhou applied medicine to his arm and lifted up a section of his waist to rub the part that was ruffled by the tongue of fire.

“I think a seaside one is good, just a little far from Capital Star.” He was dissatisfied with the little dragon’s persistent silence, and he caught his ankle where he rubbed the bruised and swollen neck of his foot.

“Hiss-” Ming Huan shook his head perfunctorily, “Mn, it’s okay.”

“Or, would you prefer the sea of flowers? A closer one, but only at a small space station….”

Ming Huan glanced at the documents quickly, “Either.”

Suddenly he thought of something, and he pulled back to ask a question about Xie Jue. He learned that Xie Jue had been arrested, and the military trial would be held just a week later. He was inexplicably in a complicated mood.

Shuci was such a well-behaved child. Xie Jue, only considering himself a friend, already felt so reluctant. As the biological father, Xie Jue felt at a loss and heartbroken when he discovered that his child had undergone a differentiation probability.

That night, deep into the night, the last remaining imperial search space station was about to be ordered to be destroyed by Yu Hanzhou. Xie Jue couldn’t help but doubt whether Yu Hanzhou’s method could really bring a waking day for these little dragons. Ming Huan also felt that it was unlikely to wait until it happened, even if it cost lives.

However, Yu Hanzhou and Hoth’s proposal was presented before him. He almost hesitated for no time and chose Yu Hanzhou. Even though Yu Hanzhou’s method was old-fashioned and slow, it was the only way.

Yu Hanzhou held Ming Huan to sleep, but his mind kept recalling the words Hoth used to persuade him three days ago. It seemed like there was some connection.

Ming Huan grabbed the bedding, seemingly lost in thought. Since coming to this world—becoming a dragon—the feeling of violation had lingered in his mind. He opened the terminal, once again browsing through some ancient documents from a thousand years ago. His consciousness was clear, and his body unconsciously twisted and turned. His buttocks still ached, and Yu Hanzhou thought it was because of this that he couldn’t sleep, so he held him and rubbed his back.

“Yu Hanzhou, why transition to a warplane, and why genetically modified warplanes?” Ming Huan suddenly asked.

‘Genotype warships, genotype weapons…. And from Hoth’s mouth ‘the most fit genes’.’

‘Even the term ‘genetic lock’ was named by Yu Hanzhou.’

There were things left over from the ancient Empire, linked with the word ‘genetic’.

“Why are you asking this all of a sudden?” Yu Hanzhou covered him with the quilt, “You take a good rest first, the remaining things, I will solve….”

Ming Huan turned around and faced Yu Hanzhou, shrinking into a ball with his knees against his thighs. Yu Hanzhou’s hands were wrapped around his waist, and it was a pose that was intimate like there was a pleasing closeness.

Yu Hanzhou’s mouth was slightly lifted as he lowered his head.

Before he could do anything, he heard Ming Huan rambling, “No, it’s not right. Do you know, the Empire’s side has a saying,’ Dragons have two major inferiorities, God gave alphas violence, and omegas greed….”

Yu Hanzhou had just pecked him lightly on the lips, saying, “Is that so?”

Hoth had also said that the dragon’s nature couldn’t be tamed. Yu Hanzhou wasn’t taming the dragon race. They were greedy, violent, and lacked restraint. Yu Hanzhou had told him that a dragon’s entire life was spent searching for a mate, the ultimate goal being to spend their lives together with a dragon partner. This was the true desire born into the world of dragons – not greed, not plunder.

On the contrary, this so-called ‘nature’ had always been hindering what he truly desired. The pure-blooded royal family of the empire all possessed SSS Level mental energy – perfect specimens with highly compatible genes.

“Yu Hanzhou, haven’t you ever felt that dragons… seem really strange? Most species evolve to survive better, but dragons seem to evolve towards extinction…”

“Are you suggesting it’s not natural evolution?”

“I feel…” Ming Huan struggled to articulate his thoughts, “Dragons don’t seem like a species, more like… a weapon.”

“You mean…”

“I suspect that the dragon’s genes were modified by advanced biological technology thousands of years ago.”

Yu Hanzhou unexpectedly voiced the speculation that had been lingering in Ming Huan’s mind.

“!!!” Ming Huan knew he was never good at convincing others. He didn’t expect that he didn’t even need to say anything as Yu Hanzhou seemed to have the same idea in his heart, and he understood it as soon as he did.

He met a pair of eyes with a smile.

The feeling of his thoughts being guessed in an instant had never felt so good.

“Yes, that’s what I mean! I do not want to engage in any technological renaissance, ah, I also do not think that the technology of a thousand years ago is a good thing, but I suspect that the existence of the Imperial Royal’s SSS-level mental energy….”

Yu Hanzhou suddenly laughed softly and rubbed Ming Huan’s hair.

“I certainly know that you do not want a technological renaissance.”

“A little dragon who saved up three bucks and just wanted to live on a deserted agricultural planet – how could he want to appropriate advanced weapons and do something so troublesome?”

Ming Huan could not tell whether Yu Hanzhou was complimenting him or undermining him.

“Well, you’re not the first one to propose such a conjecture,” Yu Hanzhou glanced at him nonchalantly, “Someone brought it up thirty years ago.”

Ah? Ming Huan was taken aback by Yu Hanzhou’s words. He had only recently formulated this idea based on the information from the original work and his experiences after crossing over. Had someone already suggested it?

“The first person, thirty years ago, was the current Deputy Dean of the Technical Institute. He graduated as the top student from the Federation’s 1st Military Academy’s medical department. When he first proposed the ‘genetic modification theory,’ it caused a huge controversy. However, he concurrently developed an effective suppressant inhibitor, supporting his speculation. As a result, this hypothesis was preserved, classified as top-secret, and kept in the Technical Institute’s confidential research…”

So, someone had already suspected this thirty years ago! Ming Huan became animated discussing this topic, grabbing onto Yu Hanzhou and not letting go.

“The second person…?”

“You know the second person.”

“Is it Shu Yun, from Shu Institute?”

“He graduated from the Federation’s 1st Military Academy’s medical department about half a year ago, also as an outstanding representative of the graduates. His research focus is the ‘Behavioral Psychology of Alpha Omega,’ but interestingly, this is just a small branch of his actual research direction. Like the Deputy Dean from thirty years ago, he proposed the ‘genetic modification theory.’ This time, however, he gained recognition from prominent figures in the medical field.”

“Of course, he signed the highest confidentiality agreement so these things cannot be easily said to you.”

Federation’s scientific and technological development had advanced to this point. It was far beyond his expectations.

According to this trend, Yu Hanzhou previously said some nonsense that was suddenly not nonsense – things really may be solved, even without any scientific developments from the ancient Empire and supporting technology, Federation should also soon be able to really break through the dragon race’s genetic research bottleneck.

“Vice Academy or not, Dr. Shu also. He, after all, is part of a medical faculty. But, how do you associate this with that one?”

Ming Huan pursed his lips. He had been an alpha and an omega. Around him, he had witnessed the growth of omega little dragons and the unruliness of alpha little dragons. Like Shu Yun, like Shuci. Greed was definitely not Shu Yun’s nature, nor was it Shuci’s. Yu Hanzhou’s continuous efforts, predicting differentiations, and educating young dragons were not about taming them. It was an attempt to teach them how to resist this strange ‘power’ before it tore and consumed him with this inexplicable impulse.

Ming Huan’s mind connected the dots in an instant. No wonder the entire imperial royal family possessed SSS Level mental energy. No wonder some dragons, the more powerful they became, the more fragile they were – Yu Hanzhou called this phenomenon a ‘genetic lock’ because it truly acted like a lock. This lock confined the little dragons born into the world, whether omega or alpha.

“We can’t detonate it! Yu Hanzhou, the space station, absolutely cannot be detonated!” Ming Huan grabbed Yu Hanzhou’s arm excitedly, his pupils contracting into vertical slits due to his agitation. “It’s a planet, a technological hub for biological research information!”

***

The officers stranded at the detection space station were on the verge of despair. The combined fleet of the royal guard and warships loomed over the small space station. Regret filled their eyes.

Commander Hoth had been placed in cryostasis after his risky move. He had taken a leap with no weapons or jump equipment, heading towards the Capital Star, confident that he could convince the young white-feathered dragon.

In the end, it turned into a tragedy. No one knew what the Lord Chancellor had experienced on Capital Star. He had been one of the empire’s most outstanding royals for nearly a century. The Federation people were truly ruthless, reaching a level of despicability and shamelessness. He lost the war, and the Imperial Court suffered huge losses. He surrendered to the Federation, and even immediately lost this only advanced space station of the ancient Empire.

Appearing alongside the little dragon was the white-feathered dragon they had crossed paths with before.

The guard team’s eyes were as cold as cicadas, but as a defeated nation, they had no right to approach the space station.

“Commander, he wouldn’t—”

“Want to monopolize a technological hub!”

The commander’s gaze suddenly contracted, “The Federation people are too despicable!”

“Damn Federation!”

Curses echoed within the military ranks.

“Hoth spent a hundred just to locate this detection space station, how dare he!”

“All his declarations about destroying the space station were fake, all fake! If I had known, why would I have signed any ceasefire agreement! Why did the Lord Chancellor issue a ceasefire order!”

The expression of the head of the guard team couldn’t get any worse. The Chancellor he spoke of had already had his leg bones broken, internal organs crushed, and been placed in a cryogenic chamber by the despicable little dragon. There might be no chance of him coming out again.

He was right. If he had known that the technological hub he had worked hard to find for a hundred years was going to be given away so easily to the Federation, he wouldn’t have agreed to the ceasefire agreement so readily.

In an instant, the commander made a decision to disregard the ceasefire agreement and launch a sneak attack. However, just as he was about to act, the little dragon sensed the movement of the starships, infiltrated their communication systems, and declared, “Don’t attack.”

“I will destroy the space station, but give me another three hours.”

“Why should I believe you?” The commander negotiated, “You’ve already violated the terms of the ceasefire—”

The little dragon seemed impatient to negotiate, saying coldly, “If you forcefully interfere, I will directly destroy your starship.”

Before the words even settled, a warning shot took out an auxiliary control room.

“Believe it or not, it’s up to you.”

‘Click.’

The communication was cut off.

On his end, the little dragon began to invade the master control on the space station, and the originally dark and incomparable reconnaissance space station looked like a night fire ignited under the energy support, brightening a small piece of the dark universe.

‘This was….’

‘The detection space station from a thousand years ago.’

the white-feathered dragon could also directly invade with mental energy.

“Ming Huan, your mental energy has not fully recovered. You disconnect, I’ll search for the location.”

“I can’t.”

The hidden backbone technology star was in a distant space domain, and making a single crossing was enough to deplete the energy of half an energy star as well as a large amount of mental energy.

In the original story, the protagonist helped Hoth to reach the technology star, and his mental energy was severely damaged so there was no way to support the second expansion of the domain leap.

He returned with the help of the SSS-Level mental energy belonging to Hoth.

Due to the depletion of his mental energy, Hoth, who had always been meticulous, was caught by the protagonist that had a grudge and died in a counterattack.

This episode for Ming Huan was extremely deep, because Hoth died on the day when his obsession with the main technology star was lit up, and he was full of the tragedy of being a villain.

It also meant that over, and back again, would take two drains of SSS-level mental energy.

“I’ll send you through.”

“No way.” Yu Hanzhou was worried about Ming Huan’s mental energy status, “I’ll cross by myself….”

“Expanded domain leap. If you cross, you won’t have the mental energy to return. I’ll send you across, and then, wait here for you to come back – you trust me, I won’t send you to the wrong location. You copy the bio-data back, and I’ll be here waiting for you.”

“I’m not worried about you setting the wrong location.”

His brow furrowed, “You’re hurt, Ming Huan, don’t be a hero.”

“I’m not trying to be tough. Yu Hanzhou, why do you always see me as so fragile?”

“Ming Huan.” Yu Hanzhou’s tone intensified.

“I finally understand. Genetic weapons. Whose genes they match.” Ming Huan propped his head up, smiling bitterly. In the past, the ancient empire conducted continuous biological research to ensure the imperial royal family received the dragon’s mental energy. That’s why the pure-blooded royal family of the empire all had SSS Level mental energy.

“For humans, dragons were the ultimate biological weapons. They underwent continuous genetic matching with starships, warships, mechas, and various types of firearms. However, as a result, the humans of the ancient empire no longer allowed dragons to freely reproduce and separate from humans. Therefore, they placed a lock on the dragons. It locked away their ability to freely reproduce, even locking away the possibility of ascending smoothly. Without the assistance of human technology, dragons cannot freely reproduce, and they cannot retaliate.”

Ming Huan shook his head. For the past three years, he always felt that this world was too strange, too oppressive. The countless rules set by Yu Hanzhou made him feel suffocated. It made him want to distance himself. But where could he distance himself from? Could he find an agricultural planet, live there for the rest of his life, and truly obtain freedom? No. Not freedom.

“I thought that I was in a world that sucked.”

I thought you were a dragon that was dead and uninteresting, and the world sucks.

Ming Huan’s eyes glowed slightly red.

“So.”

“This has been the best of all worlds.”

There was a dragon, and he held on for four hundred years.

Fighting against all the injustice, and correcting the flaws.

“Yu Hanzhou, a certain biological research information backbone technology star. Only I can send you across, but coming back, you can only be on your own. There is only one chance, when you come back, you must not set the wrong location of the star field, ah.”

“Thirty times the current boundaries of the ancient Empire.”

“If you come back on the way to the wrong star field, with the existing level of technology energy reserves, I can never find you again.”

Ming Huan’s tone was relaxed, like he was joking.

his eyes were unconsciously red.

“I’m still waiting to marry you.”

Yu Hanzhou’s eyes were slightly stunned.

‘Find it.’

Ming Huan eyelids lifted slightly, and he began the leap fighter data and the energy matching rate. He set everything tuned to the correct level, but the palms of his hands seeped with sweat as he had never been so nervous.

“Why do you believe me about the biological planet? Are you not afraid that I’m wrong?”

Yu Hanzhou trusts him, and it really seemed like there didn’t need to be any hesitation.

‘Wasn’t he afraid that he was lying to him?’

“You’re my dragon companion, I will always trust you. Even if your prediction is wrong, after confirming it, I will come back.”

He lowered his head and gripped the little dragon’s red lips which he nibbled delicately.

“I love you.”

In the tender and lingering kiss, the little dragon could hardly breathe, and he felt something flowing tenderly in his blood as if it melted all his bones and blood.

Yu Hanzhou kissed the tips of his reddened ears again, and nibbled on them, “Wait for me to come back.”

The warm breath swept over the little dragon’s ear.

Great minds.
I love these 2. I hope YH gets what he needs and makes it back safely; especially now MH seems to have realised his feelings.
Thank you both for the chapter.
