Chapter 7: The Scent of Lu Yao

Because the summer break was approaching, the recent training sessions had been reduced somewhat. Ji Jin came back to the dorm relatively early in the evening, but Ji Xingxing was already asleep, sitting in the children’s rocking chair.
As for why there was still a children’s rocking chair in the training room, it was because Zhao Ze had personally cleaned up a vacant room next to the lounge and turned it into a children’s room. He had even applied for funds to buy toys and the rocking chair.
There was even a small electric children’s convertible car parked in the lot downstairs from the dorm building.
One had to admit, human kids could conquer everything.
Back in the dorm, Ji Jin first gently carried Ji Xingxing to the bed and quietly changed him into pajamas, then adjusted the air conditioner. Before, in the rented apartment, there hadn’t even been an air conditioner, so Ji Xingxing had always slept restlessly; now it was a bit better.
After taking care of Ji Xingxing, Ji Jin took a shower and came out wearing loose pajamas. Just as he stepped out of the bathroom, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed it was Naisi.
Ji Jin didn’t know why Naisi would call him at this hour, but without thinking much, he answered.
“Ji Jin! Come down quickly and pick me up! I’m downstairs at your dorm!” Naisi’s voice came through the phone.
Ji Jin was a bit stunned. Then he sensed there was an echo in Naisi’s voice. He glanced out the window, thinking, It can’t be…
The LPF team headquarters were in City S, which was quite far from City B, where MOE was located. Naisi really wouldn’t be here…
“Hurry up, Ji Jin!”
This time Ji Jin confirmed it was indeed Naisi’s voice — and he could hear him outside. Ji Jin hung up and went downstairs to pick him up.
He walked down the dimly lit hallway stairs. Naisi stood under the streetlamp at the dorm entrance, wearing a white T-shirt and white sweatpants, with a small silver-gray backpack by his side. He kept his head down, rapidly typing on his phone.
“Why did you suddenly come over?” Ji Jin chuckled softly and patted Naisi on the shoulder.
“All because of you,” Naisi put away his phone with a “hmph,” sounding a bit tsundere. “You came back but didn’t tell me beforehand. You didn’t even treat me like a friend.” Then he reached out and threw his arm around Ji Jin’s shoulder.
The sweet milk scent immediately enveloped Ji Jin, clinging to him like syrup. As an Alpha, Naisi’s personality and pheromones were soft and mild, completely non-aggressive, making him seem more like a Beta compared to other Alphas.
Ji Jin and Naisi were from the same group of players. Although on different teams, they often played games together and had a good friendship.
“Brother’s charm is so great, it makes you think about me like that,” Ji Jin elbowed Naisi, teasing as usual.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, I missed you to death, you heartless man. You came back without saying a word,” Naisi glanced sideways at Ji Jin, then shifted his arm from Ji Jin’s shoulder to press the back of Ji Jin’s head toward himself. “You came all this way — let me suck on you a little.”
Then he got slapped away by Ji Jin.
Naisi pouted. “I’m tired. I need to cuddle Jinjin to sleep.”
For once, Ji Jin regretted being friends with this guy.
Naisi had come in a hurry, so Ji Jin took him upstairs first, then planned to walk around a nearby supermarket to buy some daily necessities. When they went upstairs, Ji Xingxing was still sound asleep. Even after Naisi fondled his little face for a long time, he didn’t wake up.
Ji Jin still didn’t feel at ease leaving, so he called Zhao Ze to come watch Ji Xingxing.
The team manager, who had been conquered by the human kid, even abandoned a ranked match to come over. At that moment, Ji Jin felt like it wasn’t him who signed the contract — it was Ji Xingxing.
There was a large supermarket nearby the dorm. Even at the supermarket, Naisi clung to Ji Jin’s little hand and refused to let go. They casually picked some toiletries, but Ji Xingxing had long protested wanting milk and had already rushed off toward the baby food and snack instant food aisles.
Past this corner was the baby food section; the next row of shelves was the snack and instant food area. Ji Jin had just reached the middle of the aisle when he suddenly smelled a familiar pheromone scent.
— Clear and sweet, with a mix of tartness and rich aroma.
It was the scent of plum wine.
He had forgotten — the IKW headquarters and MOE were only separated by one or two streets, so running into Lu Yao was inevitable. Even from this distance, Ji Jin could still smell Lu Yao’s fresh, sweet scent.
To him… this scent was far too familiar, far too attractive. His body even reacted, wanting to approach the person emitting the plum wine scent.
“What’s wrong?” Naisi was holding a bottle of yogurt, examining the ingredients, sensing something off about the person beside him. He turned and whispered a question.
Unexpectedly, he saw Lu Yao at the end of the aisle.
Lu Yao was pushing a shopping cart alone. The cart was almost empty, so it looked like he had just entered the supermarket not long ago.
Ji Jin wore a pheromone-blocking bracelet all year round, so even Naisi, who was close beside him, couldn’t smell the scent on Ji Jin’s body. Naturally, Lu Yao couldn’t smell it either. But maybe Alphas had some kind of sixth sense, because the moment Ji Jin saw Lu Yao, Lu Yao happened to look at Ji Jin — and also saw Naisi at the same time.
Naisi and Lu Yao weren’t particularly close in private; if anything, they were more familiar with each other on the competition stage, probably because this year LPF and IKW were fighting fiercely for the championship and had analyzed each other countless times.
Naisi hadn’t expected to run into Lu Yao here. He didn’t know all the details about Ji Jin leaving IKW back then, and he hadn’t asked about the current relationship between Ji Jin and Lu Yao.
But judging from the atmosphere, it didn’t seem very good.
So Naisi gave Lu Yao a nod of acknowledgment, and Lu Yao nodded back.
As for Ji Jin, he just stared silently at the little bottle of yogurt, Ji Xingxing’s favorite, in his hand. He could feel a burning gaze scanning him not far away — no need to guess, he already knew exactly who was looking at him.
In the end, the owner of the plum wine scent didn’t come over, but left directly.
For some reason, Ji Jin let out a breath of relief, but also felt a little disappointed.
Naisi glanced at Ji Jin, then looked at Lu Yao’s retreating back, nodding thoughtfully.
When leaving the supermarket, Ji Jin suddenly remembered he was running low on pheromone-blocking bracelets. He first told Naisi to head back, then planned to go to the pharmacy himself — because Naisi didn’t actually know he was an Omega.
Naisi was a little confused but didn’t ask further, only reminding Ji Jin it was late and to come back quickly after buying what he needed.
The pharmacy was on the next street over. Walking there along the street would be too far, but if Ji Jin took a short alley cutting through the middle of the street, it would be much quicker.
The alley had no streetlights and was pitch-black. Ji Jin had only taken a few steps inside when someone suddenly covered his eyes from behind and roughly pushed him against the wall.
The shove was strong, but not enough to let him actually hit the wall — one hand was pressed against his back, cushioning the impact.
His breath grew a little rapid; the person’s warm breath sprayed close to Ji Jin’s ear. The palm on his eyes was hot and firm, tightly pressing him against the slightly cold wall, making it impossible for him to move.
Yet, it was an intimate closeness.
Although Ji Jin couldn’t see, he could smell the scent on the person —
It was Lu Yao’s scent.
Perhaps because Lu Yao had run over here with some exertion, or maybe because Ji Jin hadn’t smelled that rich, mellow plum wine scent so clearly for a long time, or perhaps simply because they were standing so close.
The plum wine scent wrapped around Ji Jin, making his body go weak and his head spin. As an Omega — especially one who had tasted Alpha pheromones before — such a sweet scent could almost break through his defenses immediately.
“Xiao Lu!” Ji Jin’s breathing quickened. He felt like his bracelet had lost its effect; the sweet strawberry scent was being pulled out by the plum wine, filling the entire alley.
The man in front was way too close; every breath and movement of Ji Jin’s was completely under Lu Yao’s control. Ji Jin could feel Lu Yao’s gaze lingering on his cheeks… his nose… his lips.
He felt that burning closeness — Lu Yao wanted to kiss him, soft lips almost touching his. He could feel Lu Yao’s breath, hear his heartbeat, and sense his own urgent desire.
His body begged for Lu Yao to kiss him, to kiss him madly, to crush and knead him, to press him deep into the Alpha’s body, sparing him from this terrible torment.
Just like that night three years ago — tearing his body apart, breaking down his defenses, being so close that their souls trembled. Unable to think, unable to control himself, only able to surrender to the other’s will.
But his reason would not allow him to do this.
