Chapter 9: Lone Alpha, Lonely Omega

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Ji Jin lazily took a couple of steps and then collapsed onto the bed. He had just been through a rough time with Lu Yao, almost falling into a false heat, which was an enormous strain on his Omega body.

Seeing Ji Jin so lethargic, Naisi’s feigned angry expression immediately broke down.

“How come you’re an Omega? You never told me! I’m supposed to be your best friend,” Naisi said, flopping onto the bed too, only an arm’s length from Ji Jin. He deeply inhaled the fresh strawberry scent in the air and showed an expression of enjoyment. “Ah, so this is the adorable Omega’s scent — so sweet. After all these years, it’s my first time smelling your pheromones.”

Ji Jin couldn’t help but roll his eyes and lightly slapped Naisi’s head.

But nowadays, Omegas were becoming rare. Most Omegas got betrothed early by rich and powerful Alphas, so they were hardly seen. Especially in the esports industry — a mostly male-dominated field — not only were Omegas rare, but female Alphas were few too, with only Yu Huanhuan in all these years.

“When I first smelled your scent, I couldn’t believe you were an Omega,” Naisi rambled excitedly, as if he’d taken some stimulant. “The number one esports player, three-time champion God Ji, the most valuable player, king of trash talk — is actually an Omega! And among all those Alphas, none can beat you!”

Ji Jin frowned slightly, clearly fed up with Naisi’s nonsense.

“Wait a minute!” Naisi said with a laugh, then suddenly his smile faded as he processed something after thinking for a while. He glanced back at Ji Xingxing sleeping soundly on the bed, his heart skipping a beat. “Then your son…”

Ji Jin gave Naisi a bored glance. “Just realized that?”

“When did you have a son?!” Naisi was so shocked he was almost speechless; his eyes turned a little red, and he said very innocently, “I… I thought if it really came to it, I could still mark you. I’m your best friend. Since you turned into an Omega, shouldn’t you belong to me?”

Ji Jin was a bit stunned. Naisi really looked a little disappointed.

Then suddenly, Naisi pounced, nuzzling the soft flesh on Ji Jin’s neck with his head. Naisi was an Alpha but quite slim, so he was careful about his weight on Ji Jin, who was now a fragile Omega.

Though looking at this Omega in front of him, fragile was hard to believe.

“Get off me, bro!” Ji Jin kicked Naisi away barefoot, pushing off the clingy Golden Retriever-like Naisi. “Lonely A and lonely O, mind your limits.”

Naisi’s eyes instantly filled with grievance. They used to be very close — often messing around, sharing a bed as brothers.

But now, well, the brother has changed.

“Then who’s Ji Xingxing’s dad?” Naisi thought hard but couldn’t figure out who was close enough to Ji Jin. There were plenty of Alphas in the esports world, but only a few had ambiguous relations with Ji Jin.

Mostly they were defeated opponents or lifelong enemies.

“That’s none of your business,” Ji Jin said, leaning on the pillow, one eyebrow raised lazily. “I’m an Omega, you’re an Alpha — we can’t sleep in the same bed. Go sleep in the little study next door.”

He was truly exhausted today. Also, because of Lu Yao’s pheromones, his body was still in a vulnerable state. Even though he was familiar with Naisi’s pheromones and their match rate was low, sleeping in the same bed would still affect him.

Naisi felt so wronged he almost cried. How could a best friend separated for three years suddenly become an O and not be allowed to share a bed? He sighed deeply, hugged the blanket, and went to the study, sulking.

As soon as he entered the study, he immediately posted a moment on social media —
Ahhhh, I’m heartbroken.
Location: City B.

Soon, the entire esports circle liked the post and sent heartfelt congratulations.

Ji Jin took a neutralizing spray from the bedside and sprayed until there wasn’t a trace of pheromones left in the room, feeling much more comfortable. He relaxed and lay on the bed, unwilling to move at all.

He wore only a loose long T-shirt, his pale, slender arms exposed, showing tiny blue veins. The T-shirt was lifted slightly at the waist, revealing a beautiful waistline.

If there had been a mature Alpha nearby, they probably wouldn’t have been able to resist pouncing.

Ji Jin was utterly exhausted and didn’t care about anything anymore. He buried himself under the blanket and fell into a deep sleep.

Even in his dreams, he seemed to smell a faint scent of plum wine.

The next morning, the team didn’t continue training but held a brief press conference instead. The invited guests were all esports-related media and self-media, mainly to announce the news of Ji Jin joining MOE.

Although Ji Jin had retired three years ago, his popularity remained undiminished. Almost all the reporters who were usually stationed in City B showed up after hearing the news. The press conference was arranged in a conference hall of a hotel in City B. This was basically the standard location for esports teams in City B to release announcements; this hotel hosted several such events every day.

Although MOE was relatively poor, they still wanted to save face.

Back when Ji Jin was at IKW, as the team captain, he had participated in a few press conferences, usually acting as the team’s main spokesperson. Though he was young, he had thick skin and was never embarrassed.

When IKW held press conferences before, reporters would feel nervous just hearing it was the IKW home turf, but it got somewhat better after Ji Jin retired.

Who would have thought before the reporters even changed, this “big boss” had come back again.

This time MOE mainly introduced new players, so naturally, Ji Jin wasn’t going to host. Cheng Pian, who was only seventeen this year, wasn’t up to it either. Only Zhao Ze could step up and support the whole thing alone.

However, Zhao Ze didn’t realize the simplest part of this press conference was actually the preparation phase.

The press conference was about to start, and the MOE team players had already taken their seats. The high-level training from the day before had stirred excitement inside these young players. No one wanted to attend a boring press conference, but pressured by Zhao Ze, they all obediently came.

Only Ji Jin sat in his seat, then casually… yawned.

Zhao Ze: “…Don’t get angry, don’t get angry, think about your hair! Think about Ke Yu’s hair transplant bill!”

Once the reporters were seated and the cameras and everything were ready, the press conference officially began. Zhao Ze first thanked the reporters for coming, then introduced Ji Jin and announced that Ji Jin had officially joined the MOE team.

Zhao Ze spoke briefly and thought there was nothing to criticize. But no sooner had he announced the floor was open for questions than the reporters raised their hands wildly.

Zhao Ze and all the players except Ji Jin were stunned. Usually, reporters had never been this enthusiastic. Ji Jin, by contrast, calmly sat in his seat as if fully aware of this situation.

Cheng Pian said, “As expected from a senior who has seen the world.”

All the MOE players showed him respect.

“God Ji, why did you retire three years ago? When you came in just now, I saw a child beside you. Is that your child?”

Zhao Ze randomly picked a reporter, but unexpectedly, the reporters fired questions like a rapid stream of bullets, each question more surprising than the last.

Only then did he understand: all these reporters weren’t here just to see MOE’s new member. They came to dig into the secrets about Ji Jin who had retired three years ago.

Each was more gossip-hungry than the last, as if determined to turn Ji Jin’s story upside down to find some explosive scoop.

Zhao Ze glanced back at Ji Jin, wanting to see his reaction in case Ji Jin didn’t want to answer and he needed to stop the questions. He was the only one present who knew Ji Jin’s true gender. A group of Alphas or Betas pressing an Omega for personal gain, especially when that Omega was a god in the esports circle, was something he just couldn’t stand.

Ji Jin waved his hand, signaling that he could handle it. Since he was coming back, he had naturally prepared himself to be questioned by the outside world. Clearing his throat, the reporters below were so excited their recording pens trembled.

“Long time no see, everyone.” Ji Jin tilted the microphone toward himself and said softly, “You ask why I retired? Isn’t it to give the newcomers a chance? If I hadn’t retired for a few years, who else could win the championship? You have to consider fresh blood; can’t let other teams get too discouraged, right?”

The reporters all froze.

Zhao Ze, standing nearby, looked utterly baffled: I was wrong, God Ji. I don’t need to worry about you at all. You’re still the ruthless you!

Cheng Pian and Cilantro exchanged a glance and nearly burst out laughing but were shot a glare by Zhao Ze.

“So, God Ji, why did you return to the RPL (Legend Reappearance Professional League)?” A junior reporter, unused to such a big scene, asked with a trembling voice.

“That’s a good question,” Ji Jin answered solemnly. “Now the formula milk is too expensive. To earn money for raising my child and maybe win a championship along the way, I chose to come back.”

Hearing this answer, the entire venue fell silent.

Cheng Pian led the applause! What a great reason—raising a kid and earning money while winning a championship on the side.

That “on the side” phrase made many players who had never won a championship, even those who never made it into the pro league, sigh in envy.

“God Ji, why did you choose MOE instead of returning to IKW? Was it because IKW refused you? Or because of some personal conflict with IKW’s current captain, Lu Yao?”

“Why didn’t I return to IKW? Of course, it’s because MOE invited me. I figured I could still play, so I came back,” Ji Jin said with a slight smirk. He was one of the most handsome men around, with icy skin, exquisite and deep features, and a small mole by the corner of his eye that added charm.

“As for the current captain of IKW… I don’t think we have any personal conflicts. Let’s just say we’re no longer on the same team. I wish him good luck getting second place.”

Right after he spoke, the very person mentioned, Lu Yao, just happened to pass by the conference hall. Because the door was open, Lu Yao saw what was going on inside and heard Ji Jin’s words.

Even with Ji Jin’s thick skin, his heart skipped a beat for a moment.

Author’s note:

Naisi: I’m heartbroken.

God Ji: You’ve never been in a relationship. It’s impossible between us. Get over it.

God Ji: I have no personal conflict with Lu Yao.

Lu Yao: Only personal feelings, and a privately customized little baby. Maybe private marks in the future.
