Chapter 21: Capture and Expulsion

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Catching Mitchel isn’t difficult. Mitchel is just a demon of the mortal-born species — a demon that was born somewhere on earth from the beginning. They have never been infected by the breath of the Abyss and are not very powerful.

A hunter in a tight-fitting black outfit seemed to be imitating some comic book’s Black Widow special agent. Only, unfortunately, she had the wrong hair color.

In the early hours of the morning, when she appeared at the entrance of the Phosphor club, the men and women inside, dancing and drinking, all felt a horrible killing aura. Dragging a long knife and carrying a shotgun with silver bullets on her back, she kicked the guards aside and burst in. A group of burly security guards and waiters surrounded her, begging through tears for her to spare the club.

“You guys are so dramatic, I’m embarrassed,” Carolyn said with a very big and sweet smile. “How am I so scary? It’s not like I’ve beaten you guys up. I only destroyed this place once. I’m also very nervous in front of so many strong men. Sweethearts, don’t look at me so enthusiastically. Hurry up and call out the bartender here named Mitchel.”

“He got off work and just left not too long ago!” the head waiter said hastily.

“Great, which way did he go?”

Mitchel was walking down an alley without streetlights. With his head down, he looked like a normal human being from the back.

Suddenly, the sound of a whip appeared out of nowhere, and Mitchel’s knees shook as he clung to the graffiti-strewn wall, barely able to stand.

A black Porsche 911 was parked on the side of the road outside the alley. The red-haired man in the driver’s seat was blowing him kisses and urging him by mouthing “hurry up, we should go home”.

“Damn it…” Mitchel gritted his teeth and felt a fiery pain in his back and buttocks. This was one of the effects of the binding spell: chastise the spell bearer with an invisible whip at any time.

Just as he walked forward in despair, several hunters suddenly encircled him from all directions. Carolyn leapt in front of him and kicked him roughly, sending him back deeper into the alley. A silver array lit up behind him.

Liz, who had switched back to a black professional suit, raised her hand, and the Prison Cart fell like a rain of silver needles, collapsing into a tiny crystal ball and sealing Mitchel into it.

When Mitchel shrieked, the bone-winged demon Sidov had already jumped out of the car. With his speed, he could have immediately caught up with the hunters, but instead, John rushed out of the alley and stopped him.

“Out of the way. For Coraci’s sake, I do not want to kill you,” Sidov said viciously.

“For Coraci’s sake, I don’t want to arrest you either.” John didn’t budge.

After saying this, he secretly applauded himself. What I just said was really handsome!

In the moment when Sidov hesitated, silver rays from three different directions penetrated him. With his body as the center, the shining red light of an array unfolded layer by layer, almost filling the entire street.

John did not have to avoid it. This is the spell to expel Abyss natives. It will expel them back to their homeland and have no effect on the creatures originally living in this world.

The bony wing on Sidov’s back appeared. It resembled the skeleton of a bird’s wing and was all black with tiny rays of light flowing where there should have been muscle or feathers.

He was held in place by the three intersecting rays, and before he could make a full effort to break free, the expulsion spell had begun to work.

It would take at least three spell casters… With anger in his eyes, Sidov tried to find the corner in the dark street where the exorcists were hidden…

His red hair whipped in the wind blowing from the crack at his feet, and the red light under his feet rose and enclosed him as he disappeared along with his Porsche.

“Why is the car gone too!” John looked around in surprise.

Coraci and two other exorcists walked out from the street corner.

“He probably used some kind of spell to bind himself to his beloved car, to prevent theft,” Coraci said.

“You guys said the bone-winged demons are all lord level, and yet he disappeared so easily?” John asked.

“Not disappeared, expelled.” Coraci and John left together. “To hurt him is indeed very difficult, just expelling him is easy to do. The Abyssal species should not be in this world in the first place. Everyone has their own ways and methods. Just like it’s not suitable for humans to live in the Abyss, in an unfamiliar land, you will always be more vulnerable.”

“However, he can come back again, right?”

“Yes, he can. It would take a lot of his energy and even financial resources. If he insisted on coming back, it would take years or even decades.”

The Association office area had an isolation room, its interior and exterior walls had a special coating made by decocting special magical materials and silver powder. Inside the walls, several iron runes were embedded to reinforce the protection.

In the isolation room, Mitchel was released. He fell headfirst to the floor, shrinking into a ball. After taking in his surroundings, he revealed an expression of relief.

“We sent Sidov back to the Abyss. Do you want to talk to us about what happened?” Coraci sat down in front of him while John helped him to sit up on the bed.

“Great… Thank you guys!” Mitchel’s shoulders trembled. “Can you remove the binding spell on me? Please…”

“Liz went to prepare the materials. Please wait a moment.” Coraci took out a piece of candy from the box on the bedside table. “Here, this will make you feel better.”

Mitchel took it, eagerly unwrapped the candy, and threw it into his mouth.

Next to him, John thought something was wrong; that stuff smelled pungent and wasn’t candy at all.

“What did you give him?” John asked Coraci.

“Mothballs.”

“Mothballs? He ate mothballs?” John looked at Mitchel, who had the same look on his face as a human when he smells rose oil.

Coraci said, “Demons generally like mothballs, don’t you know? There are books about it in the Association library. Read more when you’re on a break. For them, the smell of camphor has a calming and pain-relieving effect, and it’s not addictive.”

After Mitchel calmed down, he leaned back on the pillow at the head of the bed and started talking wearily about his own matters.

He was born in the city as a demon of the mortal-born species, which does not mean born of humans, but a child born of a demon and a demon, conceived and birthed in the mortal world. This child is still essentially of its parents’ race but is much weaker than its Abyssal counterparts.

Mitchel lived with his mother. He grew up knowing that he was not human and became skilled at surviving as a human. However, before he was fifty years old — that is, well before he reached adulthood in appearance — his mother spurned the mortal world: its crowded streets, the high cost of living, and new regulations to restrict addictive drugs. Furthermore, she refused to continue helping Mitchel repeatedly transfer schools to create false identities1. She went back to the Abyss alone, never to be seen again.

Abyssal demons can return to their homeland through an array. However, it’s difficult to come back to the mortal world. Once they voluntarily leave, few demons ever return.

It’s even more tragic for mortal-born species like Mitchel. Logically speaking, they can also return to the Abyss, but they are too weak. Even if they go back, they will face discrimination, bullying, or even death. So, usually the mortal-born species prefer to stay in human society.

More than two years ago, Mitchel killed a few humans. Maybe he didn’t do anything wrong, but just went about it in the wrong way.

He accidentally stumbled upon a hostage scene.

The police had sent a negotiator to make a deal with the bandits. The hostages had been beaten, bruised, and were continuously crying. Mitchel secretly killed the bandits inside the house. Then using a small demon trick, he killed the very last one who was making a deal through the doorway.

Mitchel said he had no regrets. Although technically these men were not convicted, he had no right to take over the execution.

The real headache was that his actions alerted some hunters, who knew from experience that the bandits’ deaths were suspicious. After all, when Mitchel killed the last bandit, there were so many eyes, and even cameras, watching.

While trying hard to cover his tracks, he met Sidov. Sidov was a bone-winged demon from the Abyss, and Mitchel had never encountered a demon of the lord level before.

At the time, Sidov was not doing well either, it seemed his wounds had not completely healed (when he heard this, Coraci knew it was because Sidov had been locked up and experimented on). Soon, the two of them got acquainted, lived together, and slept together. All of this was said to have happened in less than a week. This progress was too fast even when considering a human lifespan.

It wasn’t long again before Mitchel wanted to leave Sidov. He couldn’t handle the cruel personality of the bone-winged demon and was even more unwilling to kill.

“Sidov killed someone in this city?” Coraci asked when he heard this.

Mitchel nodded, “He’s very cunning, like one of those cunning human criminals. He can set things up to look like an accident, or kill homeless people who have no family or friends. That’s why I wanted to ask for help: partly to get rid of him, and partly to report this.”

Carolyn leaned against the door and looked at him with raised eyebrows. “You are also a demon, although you are too human-like… You couldn’t escape him after all this time? Or you two simply could have had a fight, even if you can’t beat him, it would be enough to attract our attention. Even a domestically abused woman will fight back a few times.”

Mitchel smiled bitterly. “Miss Hunter, you don’t understand. Abyssal demon and someone like me… There’s a bigger gap between us than an alcoholic Russian husband and a domestically abused woman! At least the woman doesn’t have to kneel and be immobilized because of a single word from the man. He has so many methods of bondage that are very effective on demons, more so than on humans. I have no way to even defy him. Without his consent, I can’t even lift my head up.”

“Wow, so it’s that you wanted to break up and he didn’t agree?” Carolyn asked. “And then he kept stalking you, controlling you… Is Sidov really a demon? How can he be so petty?”

Coraci was silent as they discussed “violent ex-boyfriends who don’t allow break ups”.

He recalled the previous timeline: Sidov was rescued three years ago. At that time, Sidov was determined to return to the Abyss and had also helped the Association many times, not at all like now. It was over two years ago that Sidov met Mitchel. During that time, Sidov had been doing evil but hadn’t been detected.

No matter which era, if any city had a bone-winged demon, there would certainly be an unceasing number of incidents every day — it wouldn’t be this calm. This is why the Association has been ignoring Sidov’s existence. In the past three years, Sidov had been so calm that he did not act like a demon. Mitchel was right, this way was more like a “cunning human criminal”.

“Mitchel, why did Sidov kill?” Coraci asked. “Is it for food, or for medicine?”

Mitchel wiped his face and said, “He tortures them slowly until they die. So you see, he doesn’t need to kill every day, one captive is enough for him to toy with for a long time.”

The three Association staff members in the room looked at each other and realized that this was even worse than they had previously thought.

At this moment, Liz walked in, carrying a tray with what was needed to help Mitchel lift the binding spell. She sat on the edge of the bed and pointed to the door, “Coraci, leave this to me. You guys better go out and watch TV.”

“TV? What’s going on?”

“It’s broadcasting a news item. That address looks familiar… New Pinecone Community, Third Street, what number was it? Looks like it’s where the two Bewildering Monsters you’re in charge of live.”

Coraci and John left the isolation room. The TV in the small conference room was still broadcasting the news.

21 Third Street in the New Pinecone Community neighborhood was indeed the residence of the Bewildering Monster couple, the Farrs.

It was early in the morning when all the residents were asleep. The house suddenly exploded into flames, which also spread to neighboring houses.

The fire was incredibly intense, and the firefighters arrived just in time. They had been fighting the fire for almost twenty minutes, and the fire was not letting up.

Author’s note:

A little excited, although this time John is still very silly, but it seems that in future episodes he will be slightly (… maybe just a little) handsome…

If you think about it, how come he is physically strong but simple-minded.

Translator Notes:

  1. Since he is a demon who looks like a kid for fifty years, he needs to constantly change schools under a new identity. I guess he couldn’t just stop going to school? Such a good student!
