Chapter 22: Don’t be afraid, focus

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Lin Xu followed the voice’s guidance and relaxed his mental energy. His subconsciously closed eyes slowly opened after adapting to the situation, and he looked out the front window at the empty wall of the equipment room, but his consciousness was able to receive a lot of information from the mecha’s sensing system.

The sound of coarse mechanical rotation, the subtle differences in the four walls, the changing state of gravity, all the information was processed by Mecha’s AI and turned into understandable values and symbols in the mind and the hover screen in front of him.

“Lin Xu, if you feel that there is too much information, you can increase the level of AI assistance and it will help you solve the non-essential information.”

Lin Xu shook his head and adapted to the constant stream of information popping up, without making any changes to the AI assist settings. Heinrich could share vision with Lin Xu, but not consciousness information, and he saw Lin Xu’s face return to normal and didn’t say anything else.

When Lin Xu suggested that he wanted to learn mecha, Heinrich did not have any doubts at all; driving a mecha required strong mental energy and physical fitness, and Lin Xu…

At the very least, his identity information listed a mental energy rating of D. Imperial Military Academy’s minimum standard for recruiting mecha masters was B, and those who were able to complete their training and go into battle were basically in the A-Class.

But Heinrich did not refuse Lin Xu’s request, firstly because Lin Xu rarely asked him, and secondly because he taught Lin Xu personally, and could stop at any time if there were deviations in the process.

In Star Ocean, anyone could get this metal behemoth moving, and Lin Xu could at least experience the thrill of soaring in a mecha. Would he be happy, would he smile?

“Where to next?” Lin Xu asked.

Heinrich took a break from his thoughts and settled down, “Star Ocean has social squares as well as separate mission replicas and live battles, where do you want to go?”

Lin Xu didn’t hesitate, “Matchmaking.”

Lin Xu switched from being a civilian administrator to a combatant in the apocalypse, and no one knew better than him that real combat was the best way to hone your skills.

“Okay.”

Heinrich, who had not received the progressive mecha education model of the orthodox Military Academy, and whose skills had all been acquired through artillery fire, saw no problem with Lin Xu’s request for a sparring match right off the bat. He submitted an auto-match request to the system for a two-player match.

“You’re a useless thing, you can miss the light energy cannon with auto-targeting on, what’s the point of having you? Walk out and don’t say you’re my Pullman’s son!”

Little Pullman covered his head which was knocked by his father again and tried to defend himself, “Dad, the other side has jamming equipment, the automatic aiming accuracy is reduced!”

“Then you won’t use manual aiming as an aid? I’m telling you, the real battlefield situation you’re going to encounter is much more complicated than Star Ocean.” Pullman’s projection in the cockpit clasped his arms and cursed, “Were your three years of study at Military Academy wasted?”

Little Pullman sighed and exited the replica, he came home from vacation just to play a game to relax, but was stared at by his own general father for extra training.

At this time, the game system popped up a match invitation, little Pullman was about to raise his hand to turn off, but was stopped by his father.

The eyes of Pullman, who saw the name of the inviting player, stared straight up and muttered, “Do you accept the invitation to a two-player match from Dragon of Destruction and Unnamed?”

The younger Pullman watched as his old man grabbed his hand and poked it at the accept button.

“Dad, it’s a two-player match!”

“I saw that.” Pullman glanced at his silly son, “Come on, invite me to partner with you.”

“No, I mean, is it appropriate for the two of us to beat someone else?” Pullman Jr. said.

Although he was scolded by Pullman Sr. all day long, Pullman Jr.’s account Silver Moon Sword was high on the overall ranking of Star Ocean, while Pullman Sr. rarely logged into his account over the years, but he himself was a senior general of the Third Legion with a lot of combat experience.

Dragon of Destruction… The younger Pullman had never heard of this name, and was afraid that he was just an ordinary player, and would not be abused against the Pullman father and son teaming up? The game’s ethics made him want to say no – after all, filling ammunition and repairing mecha in Star Ocean was expensive, and he was worried about his opponent.

Pullman grunted, “You weren’t even born when Dragon of Destruction dominated the charts, it’s just that he hasn’t continued to play for decades and has dropped to the back of the rankings. I reckon he’s also already an elite force in the Imperial army.”

“So?”

“Why do you think your father’s 10,000 years old ranking is? But I sharpened my sword for three years to try to kill back, Dragon of Destruction has long stopped playing Star Ocean. I didn’t expect to see it today.” Pullman lamented and landed his mecha, the two of them changed the scene in front of them and fell into a sprawling desert.

“Why is he back again?”

“I don’t know, maybe…” Pullman looked through the mecha binoculars at the two mecha across the street, where the driver was the unnamed silver and white mecha was particularly striking, so brand new that it was not even painted, revealing different spliced parts of varying metallic hues, “Perhaps, he was also bringing up his son.”

The tone of Pullman’s lament that the years were getting old immediately turned into a maniacal laugh in the next second, “That kid across the street is still a brand new hand and dare to fight?”

The younger Pullman looked across the silver and white mecha limbs twisted and moved, apparently even the most basic mecha action was not controlled well, a moment of silence.

“All right, son, you go play with the kid across the street for a while, I’m going to go find my old rival!” After the words, Pullman’s fiery red mecha unleashed and shot up into the sky, without a half-hearted pause in mid-air, a cannon blast at the black and white mecha that destroyed Dragon.

The sound of cannon fire interrupts Heinrich’s explanation to Lin Xu of his messy middle-aged screen name back in the day, his voice paused for a split second in Lin Xu’s consciousness, and soon returned to normal.

“Lin Xu, the gravity of the sand sea scene is 1.5 times the normal gravity, you may feel the strain. If you can’t bear it, turn on the external anti-gravity thrusters. Slowly move your limbs, feel the movement of limbs and mecha action of the corresponding state, mental energy connection, you can use your consciousness to directly manipulate weapons.”

The battle had begun.

Pullman saw the black and white mecha the instant the shells came in the mecha arm to switch to shield defense mode, even faster than back then, apparently did not fall mecha training at all. He felt a burst of pleasure in his heart, shooting intense cannon fire between the black and white and silver and white mecha, wanting to draw Dragon of Destruction away from the unnamed side into a separate battle.

A few rounds of deviation shells landed on Lin Xu’s mecha, sending the already unsteady silver and white mecha to the ground in a heap, raising a roll of smoke and yellow sand as the four suns in the sky scorched the ground.

“I’ll take care of him.” Heinrich’s voice had more than a little indignation in it, “You get used to it for a while longer.”

The black and white mecha instantly ignited a blue tail flame and followed Pullman’s trajectory.

The young Pullman, who had been sent by Pullman Sr. to settle the unnamed, walked up to the silver and white mecha sitting on the ground and looked at the initial blue light in the silver and white mecha’s eyes.

He felt that there was a child sitting in the cockpit who hadn’t been involved in the world, and his father, who was unreliable, had taken him to high-level battles for the first time.

The deep blue mecha bent down and extended his hand to the silver and white mecha, as if he was trying to help him up in a friendly manner.

The next second, high-energy ray beams from the silver and white mecha fired from the gun. The deep blue mecha quickly opened its shields, but the energy wave still sent it flying a hundred meters away, smashing a giant crater of humanity in the walls, and the young Pullman’s eyes blackened.

Subsequently, Lin Xu slowly controlled the mecha to stand up, looked at the hover screen attack display, and froze for a moment. He just wondered how there could be such a silly child extending a hand of friendship to his opponent on the battlefield, not afraid of being bombarded by light cannons?

The next moment, LH798 high-energy ray beam activated and shot at the opponent with maximum power.

“Don’t be afraid, it’s the mecha that detected your conscious tendency. Lin Xu, concentrate, you can control the weapon state according to your own will.”

Heinrich breathed faster as he spoke, the battle in the sky was extraordinarily fierce. The naked eye could only see clouds after clouds of fire with black smoke and light energy weapons that occasionally penetrated the smoke, the blazing sun burning the eyes, the metal shell of the mecha reflecting the starburst.

Lin Xu split the mental domain into two parts, only allowing the part that controls the battle to connect with the mecha. His telekinesis powers had mental psychic properties, and after thousands of practice sessions, controlling the mental domain was not difficult for him.

Heinrich had S-Class mental energy and extremely high combat talent, also never found it difficult to focus his attention. But the young Pullman didn’t think so.

After recovering from the shock vertigo, he soon thought about the mental manipulation disorder caused by the distraction of mecha pilots, a problem faced by all beginners.
