Chapter 24: He even felt the excitement in his body being stimulated to the fullest

Heinrich’s eyes continued upward, skimming over the tip of Lin Xu’s delicate but not feminine nose and into his eyes, which were the same eyes Lin Xu had in reality, unchanged. He took a few seconds before answering, “Do you want to continue? It’s still early, we can go to the Zerg replica, or one of the other extraterrestrials for a spin.”

“Hmm.” Lin Xu’s other hand lifted up to press the back of Heinrich’s hand on his shoulder, not letting Heinrich continue to rub it like he’s blowing air. Heinrich subconsciously tried to pull his hand back, but it was held down by Lin Xu’s modest strength.

“Marshal, my arm is fine.”

The words fell, before Lin Xu’s hand let go of Heinrich, allowing him to withdraw his hand.

“Good…”

Lin Xu’s pupils never looked over his right shoulder, but always drifted to follow Heinrich’s face. After seeing him slowly withdraw his hand, Lin Xu seemed to smile, but quickly licked his lips and controlled his facial muscles to suppress his expression.

He went on to ask, “How is the game going to repair mecha damage?”

LH798 hadn’t been attacked too much, the silver and white mecha was just covered in dust scratches, but the only major injury was particularly gruesome. The right arm had been sliced off from the shoulder with a sword, the exposed wires and metal cuts smooth, showing the ruthlessness of the pilot’s actions.

The lightsaber also cut the condensate and circulation tubes in the mecha arm, dripping liquid into a puddle in the equipment room.

The mecha arm itself was badly destroyed by the ray gun hit and was left in the middle of the desert.

“Simulating a realistic mecha repair,” Heinrich pursed his lips, calculating the cost of repairing the broken arm, “some players don’t like to fly mecha, but have a strong interest in designing them. It will take at least a week to repair this LH798 directly, so I suggest another one, so you can open the mall and take a look.”

Lin Xu brought up the mall page, which had thousands of items under the mecha category, but the most striking of them all was the plain black mecha “Bard” advertised at the top.

The mecha was followed by a long list of zeros and dazzling taglines: “Your haute couture mecha,” “A once-in-a-century treasure,” “A victory medal for the universe. …

One phrase caught Lin Xu’s attention, “The love of this life mecha of the esteemed General Paris.”

“General Paris is?” Lin Xu didn’t remember that there was such a person in the active General.

“Largo Paris, the last patriarch of the Paris family,” Heinrich replied, “one of Imperial’s most prestigious and ever-victorious Generals, died thirty years ago on the battlefield of the Sword of Michael defense line against the Alliance forces. The Paris family has been in decline ever since.

Although the military refused to provide advanced mecha data to Star Ocean, it could not restrict private individuals from selling their own advanced combat mecha data to Star Ocean, and the Paris family… was presumably short of money.”

Accordingly, Star Ocean paid a lot of money to get the data, and this type of advanced mecha was available for a limited time at a ridiculously high price.

“Bard combines agility and offensive power very well, although thirty years ago the weapon setting was slightly backward, but that can be modified by you, if you like it, it is an optional candidate.”

“Okay.” Lin Xu nodded, entered the Bard page, pressed the purchase button, and before Heinrich could react, Lin Xu had already completed the account deduction confirmation, only to hear a cheerful sprinkle sound effect emerge from the virtual space, “Dear player unnamed, you have confirmed the purchase of the limited edition premium mecha Bard, please board your mecha and start the journey to the starry sea!”

The system’s voice became a hundred times sweeter than the novice guide, and the power of kryptonite was as terrifying as ever.

Just such a mecha, composed of data alone, was priced at 990,000, more than a hundred times the price of a normal mecha in the mall. Most players could only sigh in disbelief, even though they had their eyes on it.

Heinrich thought that if Lin Xu liked it, he’d help him to buy it, but he didn’t expect Lin Xu to be unbothered, and he pressed buy and pay as if he had just gone out for a cup of tea.

He suddenly remembered that Lin Xu now owned half of Marianna’s inheritance and was rich enough to buy a dozen planets, while he himself…. . Heinrich was the supreme commander of the Abyss Fleet, but the Abyss Fleet was not his personal property.

Heinrich’s own savings would be enough for him to buy a sparsely populated planet for retirement.

Lin Xu glanced at the solid black mecha that had suddenly appeared in the empty equipment room and patted Heinrich’s arm, “Go up there together and take a look? I wonder if the cockpit would not have been quite the same thirty years ago.”

Heinrich and Lin Xu walked up to the Bard together, and the mecha, detecting its owner’s approach, automatically lowered the gangway and waited.

Bard’s overall body shape was slimmer and more fluid than the heavily defencive LH series, and the large, full-surface metal shell was replaced with layers of scale-like metal overlaid on the mecha, greatly enhancing its ability to stretch and give the mecha greater flexibility.

It also made the Bard look even more attractive, with the light falling on the scales as if the waves were shimmering in the moonlight, but colder and harder than the waves.

The two entered the cockpit, and Bard was a solo driven mecha. Heinrich let Lin Xu sit in the driver’s seat first, while he stood aside, checking the buttons and mecha weapons on the console, while explaining to Lin Xu the usage and characteristics of these thirty-year-old Imperial weapons.

Thirty years later, the mecha weapons were more powerful and had more energy reserves than those of the past, but the exact principles had not changed much in centuries.

After teaching, Heinrich returned to his mecha, ready to take Lin Xu for a spin in the Zerg replica to get used to the feel of the Bard.

Lin Xu suddenly asked, “Marshal, do you have a name for this black-and-white mecha you modified yourself?”

“…” Heinrich was silent for a moment and replied, “It’s called Storm Chaser.”

There was a soft laughing sound in the consciousness communication, and Heinrich held his breath as he heard Lin Xu say, “Very appropriate.”

Pullman Jr. was given a lecture by his father, and with a renewed will to fight, he finally received a message that his friend request had been approved after he had beaten almost twenty opponents on the challenge platform.

He excitedly clicked on the friend page and wanted to invite the unnamed to chat, so he could send him lots of mecha repair materials and even ask a fellow mecha repair student to help the unnamed quickly repair LH798.

Just as Pullman Jr. was imagining himself exchanging ideas with the unnamed, progressing to the top of the leaderboard, the system automatically popped up the mecha display page for his new friend’s account.

The next moment, his eyes widened as he stared at the unnamed display screen, only to see a pathetic beginner mecha with a broken right arm standing next to another cold, mysterious, pure black mecha that smelled like star coins – Bard!!! The younger Pullman’s dream machine! The Bard that he could never afford to buy!

At a second glance, the unnamed battle ranking had jumped from the bottom to the top 100, quite a distance from the top 10 on the list, the Sword of the Silver Moon, but this was the result of less than a day of the unnamed.

Pullman Jr. completely believed his old man’s words: Unnamed is probably an experienced mecha warrior who ran into the game to bash ordinary players and NPCs with his own number.

He silently examined the text he sent in the chat box: Hi, I met you in matchmaking earlier, are you just starting to play Star Ocean? Do you want me to lead you through the replica?

Having been in shock for so long that he had missed the message withdrawal time, embarrassment struck Pullman Jr.’s mind and frantically prayed that the unnamed hadn’t seen the message.

He also had to go tell Pullman Sr. that he could narrow down the scope of his search for the unnamed and Dragon of Destruction in reality, just to see who among the skilled mecha masters had too much money to spend and would splurge in the virtual game.

Lin Xu clicked to accept a friend request after all the battles were over, and then got offline, not bothering with the game.

He opened the holographic pod and sat up, his back drenched in sweat, his black hair plastered to his neck in locks, his body momentarily uncomfortable after too long a period of continuous use of mental energy.

Heinrich, who was out of the game before him, handed him a glass of water and quietly waited for Lin Xu to finish it before helping him out.

The mechanical arm took away the empty glass of water, Lin Xu felt no harm, even felt that the excitement in his body was stimulated as much as possible, and he did not know if he would be able to sleep tonight.

But Heinrich had military duties tomorrow and needed to recuperate, so Lin Xu couldn’t drag him into the game all the time. He took the tissue that Ruth had kindly handed him with the robotic arm to wipe the sweat off his forehead and called on Heinrich to leave the holographic chamber together and return to area H.

They were the only two people in the exclusive elevator leading to area H. Lin Xu watched the floor change on the display, and Heinrich watched Lin Xu as the lights jumped up one level at a time.

Lin Xu’s dark hair was damp, all tossed back, and he looked in good spirits, but his face was still pale and his breathing was a little uneven. Heinrich suddenly asked, “Has your body been suffering badly?”

Heinrich remembered that Lin Xu’s image set in the game was healthy, athletic and strong, and he wondered if Lin Xu himself was not satisfied with his current sickly physique.

“Not always.” Lin Xu parted his general gaze for Heinrich, his eyelashes shining brightly.

“Did the special nutrient solution the doctor prescribed work?”

“Maybe. Or maybe it will be a lot better on Earth.” He said jokingly, making Heinrich feel confused about Lin Xu’s attitude again for a moment.

The elevator beeped at the designated floor, interrupting Heinrich’s chance to ask further questions, and the two men stepped out of the elevator and returned to their respective rooms. When the door to room 003 opened, two rabbit-cats scrambled out, pouncing on Lin Xu’s feet and jumping on their master.

Lin Xu squatted down and stroked the two little heads and suddenly looked at Heinrich, who had been paying attention to the movement across the corridor and didn’t have time to hide his sight, “Does Marshal like rabbit-cats?”

Heinrich hesitated, “Many people on the capital star like to keep them. I haven’t.”

Blackie crawled on Lin Xu’s shoulder and called out, sticking out his tongue to lick his master’s face.

“‘Cause it’s annoying?”

“No.” Heinrich saw Blackie rub his forehead against Lin Xu’s ear again, and Snowy behaved better, being held in Lin Xu’s hand to scratch his neck.

He remembered some creatures called cats that were recorded in ancient Earth data, said to look like rabbit-cats, but with pointed ears and long tails, obviously distant to humans, but wildly sought after by ancient Earthlings. Just like Lin Xu?

“Can I foster one at your place? They’re always fighting these days, and it’s not good to keep them in the same room.”

“Sure.”

“Which one does the Marshal like?”

Heinrich thought for a moment and said, “The black one.”

Lin Xu stood up, pulled Blackie off his shoulder and put him into Heinrich’s arms, “His name is Blackie, it’s a good name, Xu Xing will prepare his food and I will tell him that Blackie is in 002 recently.”

After dropping off the rabbit-cat, Lin Xu hurried Snowy into the room. “Good night, Marshal.”

Blackie, who was forcibly sent away, looked away, but Heinrich’s paw was so strong that he couldn’t escape. “Good night…”
