“My work will be exposed to ancient Earth mythology.” Lin Xu replied.
Heinrich’s eyes and ears were constantly watching for movement around Lin Xu, and as the two strangers approached him with clear purpose, his brow twitched slightly. The toes of his military boots turned in Lin Xu’s direction, and suddenly a silvery gray figure stopped him.
“Marshal Chu, thank you for coming,” Carl Hill said with a glass of wine in his hand, walking briskly as the people who had gathered around Heinrich to try to make conversation made way for the Silver Fortress commander, “Are you satisfied with the layout of the banquet?”
On this side, Heinrich was held back by the meaningless but inevitable pleasantries, while on the other side of the hall, the stranger was shaking hands with Lin Xu and introducing himself.
“Dr. Lin, it’s a pleasure to meet you in person, I’m Godric Chapman.” Godric introduced himself with a warm two-handed handshake, as if people should know the name.
“Hello.” Lin Xu’s voice was light, and his eyes swept over the silver necklace on Godric’s chest, which had a silver eye with two verticals, the same as Ika’s necklace.
“Ah, it’s you!” Ryan shouted and came to Lin Xu’s ear, “This is one of our museum’s patrons, a museum scientist who has donated many personal items to the museum.”
Godric smiled, “It’s a small token of appreciation. It’s just that I can’t read those ancient earth books in my hands, so I thought I’d donate them to the museum and have them read and translated by professionals. But I do care about these treasures. I wonder how the research on the ancient books that were sent to Dr. Lin before the expedition took off is progressing? I mean the Phaedo. Dr. Lin, I hope I didn’t mispronounce it.”
It was this old ancient Earth book that Lin Xu was restoring, sorting, and translating when the Abyss Fleet returned to the capital star, and by the time he boarded the Victoria himself, the book was back in its special suitcase of constant temperature and humidity, where it was left on hand to continue doing some work as soon as he could.
The museum-issued suitcase was of good quality, and even after an explosion yesterday, only the surface was blackened by a layer, and the artifacts in the case were intact.
“It’s up to two-thirds complete.” Lin Xu’s reply was calm, and his face had little expression, even to the point that Li Qing read a sense of boredom with the conversation; he knew Lin Xu had been so indifferent since college, but he was still so embarrassed by the atmosphere that he wanted to pull out his handkerchief and wipe the sweat from his forehead.
Godric, who was also the owner of Imperial’s famous shipping company in addition to being a naturalist, really shouldn’t be on the expedition’s list for his level of research as a personal interest, but he wouldn’t mind spending some money to get aboard the Nature’s Evolution early to examine the value of the Empire’s route to ancient Earth.
It was on the Nature’s Evolution that Li Qing met Godric, starting with Li Qing’s college classmate, Lin Xu. Godric seemed to have a high regard for Lin Xu.
As expected, his eyes lit up when he heard Lin Xu’s words, and he even spoke faster, “Dr. Lin, I also know a little bit of ancient Earth writing, and I barely read this ancient book when I first got it, what does Dr. Lin think of the content of this old article?”
“You think it’s a myth?” Lin Xu asked rhetorically.
The restoration was only two-thirds of the way through, but Lin Xu had read this one of Plato’s dialogues before the apocalypse and had the original impression, but he wasn’t sure how an interstellar person living in a time when ancient Earth history was mostly lost would have interpreted Plato’s text.
Godric froze for a moment, the smile on his face changed to another expression, “Or maybe it isn’t.
You believe him when he says that the soul can be free from the □□□□□□□□.
with the Supreme God, or, reincarnated from heaven and descended to earth?“
Godric’s words and actions were a bit strange, but Lin Xu did not perceive any danger, just looked at his expression, and after a half moment of silence, he stated conclusively, “You do.”
Before Li Qing could ask what the two men meant by this cloudy dialogue, a sudden uproar in the hall drew his attention, and Lin Xu looked in the same direction.
Godric took a few steps back in order not to block the sight of the two men, gripped the necklace on his chest with his left hand, closed his eyes, raised his right index finger and solemnly pressed it against his eyelid from left to right, finally landing on his lips as if it were a gesture to silence him. When he opened his eyes again, his gaze met Ika’s, who blinked and looked at Lin Xu’s back, making the same gesture.
The commotion in the hall rose for a moment, but quickly subsided, as if it was deliberately suppressed by the people themselves, and the sound of crisp heels touching the ground echoed through the hall in the silence.
The sound came from the door in the hall opened to the inside, a tall beautiful omega woman in a complicated dress swayed and came, curly hair on the dazzling diamonds easily visible to a group of guests trying to dress up to cover up the dust. She had a beautiful face and was heading straight for the other center of the crowd – Marshal Heinrich Chu.
In this direction, Heinrich’s back was currently turned to Lin Xu, so one could not see his expression, but could only see the woman raise her eyebrows and smile, her red lips opened.
When she was about to speak to Marshal Chu, the crowd unconsciously got quieter, allowing Lin Xu to easily hear the conversation at the other end.
“Good evening, Marshal Chu, it’s so good to see you.”
“Hello, Miss Hill, I didn’t expect you to show up at Imperial frontier airfield.”
Katherine Hill arched her eyes, “I wasn’t supposed to be here, but Marshal missed several parties on his return voyage from ancient Earth, and I missed meeting Marshal. I didn’t find a chance to send the triumphal congratulations I wanted to give you. When I heard that my brother would be hosting a banquet at Silver Airfield to see Marshal off, I came all the way here, and luckily I didn’t miss it this time.”
Heinrich pursed his lips and didn’t answer, he was always on the warpath, but that didn’t mean he was politically stupid, and Katherine Hill and Carl Hill’s intentions couldn’t be more obvious. Katherine didn’t seem bothered by Heinrich’s coldness. She raised her chin toward a servant not far away, and the unknown object in the center of the hall covered in red velvet was revealed to a crowd of guests as the velvet covering was removed.
The crowd was again in awe. Carl Hill smiled at his omega sister. The Hill family wishes to unite with Heinrich Chu.
Covered in red velvet was an equivalently scaled down sculpture of a triumphal arch, about five meters high overall, with the side walls of the white marble arch decorated with intricate and ornate reliefs of some of Heinrich’s most famous victories over the past thirty years, complete with the magnificent flagship Victoria and the solemn, ice-cold mecha Blizzard.
It bore the ancient Earth language inscription: To Marshal Heinrich Chu, who is invincible in battle.
The huge sculpture was exaggerated and dazzling, and all the attention of the crowd fell on Miss Hill’s sincere heart. No one cared that Heinrich’s expression was as cold as ice, looking in the opposite direction from where the sculpture was located.
He looked in the opposite direction of the statue. He met Lin Xu’s foggy gray eyes. Lin Xu’s expression was the same as usual, he did not follow the guests’ awe, nor did he laugh or get angry, his black hair was loose in front of his forehead, covering his eyes, like an ice floe on a dark sea.
Heinrich only felt that his throat was clogged with a breath of air, not going up nor down, and the soreness spread into a dull pain. Katherine followed the direction of Heinrich’s eyes and found some people in the corner, smiling, “Oh, it’s Dr. Lin Xu and the young man from the Kalt family, this sculpture is Mr. Kalt’s design.”
She lifted her long heavy dress and walked towards the corner, everyone made way for the Hill family’s omega lady, and when they reached a few people, Li Qing and Godric nodded sagely and gestured to leave.
Heinrich was reluctant to follow Katherine’s footsteps, but she was near Lin Xu, and Heinrich had to walk in the same direction as she did.
Upon arrival, Katherine looked back at Heinrich and waited for him to walk to her side before turning her head, as if to swear her sovereignty.
“Hello everyone, I’m Katherine Hill, thank you for your willingness to enjoy Hill Manor.” Katherine’s voice was sweet, “Thank you also to Mr. Kalt for the restored sculpture of the Arch of Triumph that he designed and made for Marshal. Dr. Lin, you are Mr. Kalt’s teacher, and I salute you for your excellent work in teaching such a wonderful student.”
She said the salutation, but it was as if she was a white swan high above the world.
Ryan’s face froze, he nodded with the corners of his mouth, but his eyes glanced at Lin Xu. He felt that Lin Xu’s air pressure was suddenly freezing low, probably because he looked at his own disastrous design and dared to say that he had recovered it.
Katherine continued, “I heard that Marshal Chu saved Dr. Lin’s life and personally invited Dr. Lin to join the expedition. I was curious what kind of scholar even Marshal recognized. I am looking forward to the results of the expedition to ancient Earth.”
What happened at the Ancient Earth Natural Science Museum banquet was no secret to a well-informed family like Hill’s. Katherine didn’t care who died there, she only cared about why Heinrich Chu, who had always been aloof, suddenly presented a man with a dragon gem and personally saved him from a gun. And even accompanied him to a funeral?
Fortunately, Lin Xu was just a civilian beta from the border area. Heinrich couldn’t smell any omega pheromones, but Katherine wouldn’t think that Heinrich, as an S-Class alpha, would choose someone other than a high-class omega to pass on his genes, especially not a powerless, sick and skinny beta.
Heinrich was far away from the Capitol political circle, but the treacherous clouds of politics could not be far away from Marshal Chu, and he had come this far step by step. Katherine also believed that this alpha knew how to weigh the pros and cons of marriage, and the Hill family clan would be the best choice for him.
The young girl’s look and actions and words were too obvious, it had been a long time since he had encountered such a thing, but Lin Xu froze and recalled some of his past.
When the apocalypse first began, humans were not completely desperate, especially those with power in their hands did not seem to be worried that humanity would die out, and all their thoughts were spent on collecting money and resources.
In the past, Lin Xu was bookish, theoretical, and in the apocalypse, zombies were rampant, natural and man-made disasters were widespread, the strongest were the most important, military power was important, and there was no need for many soft literati.
But once they were needed, they would go up the pyramid of power. Unfortunately, Lin Xu was one of billions, even more unfortunately, he was still young, and celibate, and did not want to get married to receive power. That scene, compared to the current Miss Hill’s small fights, was much uglier. Lin Xu sighed in his heart and replied calmly, as if he didn’t hear the barbs in Katherine’s words, “When the delegation returns, Miss Hill will be able to see the results.”
Katherine was about to respond when Heinrich didn’t want to hear any more and interrupted before she could speak, “Miss Hill, the dinner is about to begin, your brother is waiting for you to be seated.”
Katherine glanced back. The servants were indeed making the final preparations for the long table dinner that was about to begin in the dining room. She looked over at Heinrich, the scent of flowers on her body hitting him. Knowing that Heinrich could not smell pheromone, Katherine used perfume instead.
“Marshal, let’s go together.”
Heinrich finally frowned and took a step back without a trace, “Lin Xu and I still have something to talk about, so I would like Miss Hill to go first.”
“Dr. Lin can come along too!”
“Military secret. Miss Hill, please move.” Heinrich spoke coldly. Katherine angrily tugged her skirt and turned away.
“Lin Xu I…” Heinrich turned to Lin Xu after Katherine left and spoke almost sharply, “I don’t know her very well.”
“I can tell.” Lin Xu nodded.
Heinrich’s taut throat loosened a little. Then he heard Lin Xu say, “Miss Hill rolled her eyes at you when she left.”
The author has something to say.
This is Lin-true-have-seen-big-wave-Xu, we will slowly listen to Professor Lin’s story about the apocalypse later.
