Fetal or oviparous? Lin Xu turned his head to look at the extra oval object on the screen, “I don’t know.”
Zhou Pingbo raised both eyebrows, “Have you never been on Thales?”
“No.” Lin Xu had heard of this planet with a large mermaid race living on it, but he was a transformation product, not a true mermaid, and had never thought of going near the planet.
“All right.” Zhou Pingbo nodded, taking Lin Xu’s lack of common sense about the mermaid’s own physiology as excusable, “This thing in your stomach… Something that’s closer in shape to an egg or eggs, but the ultrasound doesn’t seem to be able to penetrate it, and I want to try the electromagnetic wave transilluminator again.”
But the transmission imaging also failed to see the inside of the egg or eggs. For human safety reasons, Zhou Pingbo did not dare to increase the transmission intensity and ended the test here, letting Lin Xu get up and put on his clothes. As Heinrich approached to help him zip up the back of his uniform, Lin Xu shuddered when the front of Heinrich’s nail accidentally brushed against his spine.
“Dr. Lin, mermaids are also hermaphroditic, right?” Zhou Pingbo pondered, not noticing the strange atmosphere between the two men.
“I think so.” Lin Xu replied, remembering that deep-sea genetically derived organisms were hermaphroditic, and so were humans, so they would not have created a new mitotic organism.
“I’ve got a theory, so let’s hear it. Oviparous animals such as fish and birds sometimes lay unfertilized eggs, which is normal physiology, not a big deal.” Zhou Pingbo said, “But Dr. Lin, you sound like this is the first time you’ve conceived… eggs?”
“Yes.” Lin Xu sat on the edge of the lab table, his long hair and shirt neatly tidied, his uniform returned to Heinrich, his face without much expression, just a lightly pressed brow, revealing a hint of doubt.
“According to animal habits speculation, the timing of spawning and sexual maturity is related to natural phenology, that is, some species will enter the estrus phase and courtship at fixed periods, you…”
“A few days ago, there was an estrus period.” Lin Xu told truthfully. Memories came back and Heinrich’s gaze moved as he watched Lin Xu. Lin Xu continued, “On the planet Sand.”
Sensing the horrific threat of death from the outside, Lin Xu’s genetic desire for self-perpetuation drove him into estrus. This had happened before, but there had never been an … egg in his stomach.
On the Sand planet, Zhou Pingbo remembered Lin Xu being with Heinrich, and after returning to the Silver Fortress, Heinrich never clearly explained why Lin Xu was there. Sensing Zhou Pingbo’s gaze, the corners of Heinrich’s lips were pursed flat and straight, and as soon as Zhou Pingbo took a look, he knew that nothing was estimated to have happened between the two. Now that this was the case, even the eggs were popping up, it might as well have happened!
“Maybe that’s why,” Zhou Pingbo sighed inwardly, “the estrus period ovulation, superimposed on the violent fluctuation of sex hormones, resulting in false pregnancy symptoms, should return to normal when the unfertilized egg is expelled.”
“I need to lay the egg?” Lin Xu’s volume rose, “I don’t know how long this will last.”
“Uh… It’s not like there’s no way to end it now; surgery and an operation can remove it. But no one here understands the physiology of the mermaid, and the egg is surrounded by a layer of tissue that acts like a uterus, an organ that didn’t seem to exist in your body in the past? I can’t be sure what needs to be removed, or whether the subsequent state of hormonal regulation after removing this one will give rise to another egg.”
Heinrich’s eyes moved down to Lin Xu’s thin waist and abdomen, where it was now completely invisible that something new was growing underneath the skin and muscle. Lin Xu also happened to turn his face to look at him. Heinrich asked, “What do you think?”
He didn’t want the sharp scalpel to cut open Lin Xu’s belly, but if he waited for the egg to mature, he would have to suffer for a while longer. He had seen the place on the fish’s tail covered by fine scales, so narrow and tender that it seemed impossible to put down even a fist.
Lin Xu wavered a bit, if it could be removed once and no longer recurred, the surgery was not much, the interstellar era of medical pods can quickly repair trauma. But what if, as Zhou Pingbo said, after taking one out comes another?
“Give birth.” Lin Xu decided, “It grows fast, it won’t take long.”
Heinrich’s arms tensed as he draped his military jacket.
—
After the three of them finalized their plan, Zhou Pingbo began extensive research on the medical aspects of human and mermaid fertility. Lin Xu’s pregnancy reaction was not mild, so Zhou Pingbo made a list of medications and ran to Hassan to get them.
Hassan took a look at the prescription and knew that these were all drugs used to calm the fetus and suppress regurgitation, Zhou Pingbo asked him to keep the matter confidential and encrypted the medication records with high-level access.
He really didn’t expect Marshal Chu to be such a person… He was not willing to give a name to someone when he was about to have a child. Hassan sighed helplessly in his heart while nodding and vowing that he would never tell anyone.
Zhou Pingbo met Ika on his way to area H. He hid his medicine in his bag and said hello to him. Ika nodded with wide eyes and Zhou Pingbo asked, “You came to area H to look for Marshal? He’s on the bridge now.”
“No, I’m looking for Dr. Lin, I haven’t seen him since the last time I came back.”
Lin Xu was not feeling well these days, tired and drowsy, and learning that he was pregnant with an egg, he did not go out much.
“He’s in his room recuperating and resting, Heinrich said not to bother him if it’s nothing serious.”
“Isn’t he unhappy?”
Ika’s question was a bit confusing to Zhou Pingbo, since when did he care about other people’s moods?
“No, just a little tired.”
“Hmm.” Ika was worried that Lin Xu would be disappointed after seeing humans create a crisis with the technology under the Crown. Zhou Pingbo looked at Ika, the other’s dark eyes seemed heavier, “I see you’re a little upset instead, who messed with our young genius?”
“I’m not young.”
He wasn’t much younger than Heinrich, but no one called Heinrich young Marshal.
“Well, well,” laughs Zhou Pingbo, “what was that all about?”
Ika bit his cheek and said, “Lately General Kalt keeps appearing in front of me and wants me to reply to him after I finish talking, I don’t want to talk to anyone, it’s so annoying.”
“What’s he saying to you?”
“Ryan, the Kalt family and such, telling me to stay away. There’s a joint fleet meeting later and Marshal wants me to attend, and General Kalt is coming, too, and I don’t like it.”
Zhou Pingbo looked at Ika’s simple eyes and knew that he didn’t understand why Kalt was always hanging around him, afraid that he didn’t like the civilian-born Ika for his A-Class alpha son.
Zhou Pingbo smiled and persuaded, “Ika, did you get your new shoulder patch and uniform when you were promoted this time?”
“Yes.”
But Ika rarely wore the uniform, always in a T-shirt and casual pants in the workshop.
“Put it on properly before you go to the meeting.”
He did so suspiciously, and as Heinrich entered the meeting, he unexpectedly gave the perverse Ika an extra look, said nothing, and looked down to reply to Lin Xu’s message. Lin Xu said that Blackie’s litter was still in Heinrich’s room and wanted to go in and get it, and Heinrich gave him access to his room 002 directly.
When General Kalt entered the conference room and took his seat, he was shocked to find that the omega he had recently talked to was actually sitting in the second seat on Heinrich’s left hand side, second only to Captain Honda Agana of the Victoria. When he took a second look, the general star on Ika’s shoulder patch shone brightly, and after this promotion, Ika became vice-marshal. Kalt, though in charge of an entire fleet, was only a vice-marshal, and he and a scrawny omega… were the same rank. And then thinking about what he had done before, he blacked out and listened to the entire meeting in a trance.
Arnold, who was with Heinrich, didn’t expect the meeting to be so easy.
He had always thought that Imperial had sent the Elam Fleet, saying that it was to replenish the lost forces of the Abyss Fleet, but in fact it was for power sharing and supervision, but Kalt knuckled down and jumped in with his eyes closed as if he had not noticed the trap in the rhetoric. Even the final sweep of the Nature’s Evolution regarding the people involved in the Memo lab did not intervene.
—
Kalt returned to the Elam flagship before slowly regaining his composure and thinking long and hard, and asked the lieutenant to send Ryan, who had been captured on board, back to the Victoria. He had let Ryan join the expedition in the hope that he could take this opportunity to join the Abyss Fleet.
The Abyss Fleet was a great starting point for his military career, even more than the Elam Fleet he was in charge of, but the little brat hadn’t done anything except eaten his way through the Abyss Fleet’s dining room, but now he had a chance with Ika Igor. Kalt didn’t accept an omega of civilian origin, thin and even with his gland removed, but if that omega was the Abyss Fleet’s vice-marshal, all that was another story.
He returned to his sitting room alone in contemplation, and before entering, suddenly asked his lieutenant to leave and leave him alone for a while. Kalt’s face was not good as he stepped into the sitting room, when a figure suddenly came out, pulled on his boots and cried out in fear, “Isaac Kalt, help me, the Abyss Fleet is cleaning up the rememberers, I’ve managed to escape here, please help me for old time’s sake.”
Kalt scowled, “Does anyone know you’re here for me?”
“I was chased all the way out by them, they knew I ran in the direction of the Elam fleet, but no one knew I was here to find you!”
Kalt grunted coldly, and the man shuddered, looking up at a loss for words, only to be confronted by the glowing blue muzzle of a light energy gun. Bang…
A flash of white light, his head with one more scorched hole, the body shuddered and fell back on the ground, blood and flesh were burned, it took a while before the pressure of blood and brain plasma broke through the charred layer and spilled out onto the carpet.
“A bunch of useless things, not doing something when you should, when you shouldn’t, and no brain to dare to attack the Abyss Fleet, what’s the use of having you?”
Kalt put away his gun and dialed the adjutant’s communication, “Tell the Abyss Fleet that there was a person involved in the case who came to Elam Fleet and he was killed, tell them to come and pick up the body.”
—
Blackie and Snowy don’t really sleep in the nest. Lin Xu allowed them to get into bed with him, and when it was cold, the two rabbit-cats would bury themselves under the covers and hunker down at Lin Xu’s feet, or if they weren’t so cold, they would fold together and sleep under the pillows.
Blackie was more active and clingy, waking up every morning and burrowing into Lin Xu’s arms, while Snowy stretched out his paws, his fur smooth and long, snowy white, but his nose, tongue and ears were all pink and tender, and he purred weakly, beautiful and delicate.
When Lin Xu didn’t want to get up, he played with the rabbit-cats in bed. He didn’t know if Heinrich would let his pets go to bed, so when he sent Blackie to him, he gave Heinrich his cat’s nest as well, but later there was a conflict between them and Lin Xu brought Blackie back without his nest. Heinrich gave Lin Xu permission and Ruth opened the door to 002 for him.
This room, where Heinrich lived year-round, was furnished in much the same way as several other long-unoccupied rooms, neat to monotonous, with few personal items. The exception was the rabbit-cat’s soft, round cat’s nest, which was placed right next to the bed, giving the room a touch of eerie gentleness.
As Lin Xu walked past the desk with Blackie in his arms, he saw a military uniform hanging on the back of the chair, inky black with gold trim and brass buttons, and few extra accessories, sharp and neat. Did Heinrich wear it when he returned to his room late at night and continued to work at his desk? Lin Xu’s footsteps stopped at the table as he looked at the black uniform and ran his hands over Blackie’s black hair, one after the other, extremely smoothly.
Heinrich’s uniform material was also smooth, a special fabric for dust and anti-static, a little cool to the touch, like silk, but thick, not as fragile as silk, tightly wrapped around Marshal Chu’s sculpted body.
The more abstinent, the more one could imagine the look under the tightly sewn military uniform, making one want to touch and feel. Lin Xu’s eyelashes fluttered, his breath became hot at some point, and his eyes clouded as he reached for the uniform hanging on the back of the chair, grabbed it, and brought it to his eyes. His arms and tendons tensed, a fine sense of entanglement in his bones, and Lin Xu held Blackie close, his uniform jacket draped over Blackie’s head, covering the entire rabbit-cat. Blackie screamed twice.
Lin Xu looked down, and the hot fur of the rabbit-cat brought out the residual vetiver pheromone in the fabric, and the tip of his nose rested against the rabbit-cat’s head, and thus against the uniform covering the rabbit-cat.
The vetiver’s plant odor wrapped around Lin Xu’s body as he swayed, his muscles tensing with excitement and tingling with bouts of other emotions, having to stagger and brace himself against the table
–
When Heinrich returned to area H after the meeting, he saw the door to his room half-closed, remembered that Lin Xu had come to get the cat’s nest, and walked over to him with lighter steps. What he saw next struck him.
Looking in through the crack, Lin Xu was holding his uniform, eyes closed, head down and sniffing carefully.
