Chapter 7: Smells good, hungry

“I heard it was a star pirate that attacked the Abyss Fleet on the start, and Marshal Chu himself pursued it in his mecha.” Ryan whispered to Lin Xu, “The fleet traveled normally, and after defeating the star pirates Marshal Chu fell behind, and the mecha couldn’t catch up with the fleet, so he landed on the capital star and prepared to redeploy a starship, just as His Royal Highness hosted a banquet, so he invited Marshal Chu to come too.”
“Hmm.” Lin Xu responded.
Ryan noticed that his eyes still fell on Heinrich, and his heart couldn’t help but feel that even someone like Professor Lin, who didn’t want to interact with people, would be attracted by Marshal Chu’s gallant appearance. He tugged Lin Xu’s sleeve excitedly, “Professor Lin, look at this scene, does it look like the scene of Moses parting the sea written in that ancient Earth mythology book we recovered and translated?”
Maybe. Lin Xu didn’t care about Ryan’s words, he only had eyes for Heinrich at the moment. He smelled so good.
Lin Xu smelled the aroma of crystalline energy on the approaching man, and for a man who had been starving for seven or eight years, the scent of energy was so captivating that it almost made his back go weak. So much so that when Heinrich stopped in front of Lin Xu, Lin Xu was still staring at him, his eyes sweeping straight across his chest, shoulders, and collar, trying to find any crystals that might be there.
Heinrich stood in front of Lin Xu and opened his lips slightly, a gap between his thin lips, but suddenly he didn’t know what to say. He had never seen Lin Xu like this before – although he had only seen him a few times in total.
A neat formal dress replaced Lin Xu’s extremely casual past, and his half-length black hair was neatly combed and tied up to hang softly over his shoulders, with scattered hair lifted behind his ears, revealing his entire face and shining eyes. This gave him an almost startling look of mixed beauty and handsomeness, with a lean figure and cheeks that add a bit of irrelevant morbidity, and long, thick lashes that fluttered slightly, casting a shadow over his eyes.
His gray pupils still had the same foggy texture, but the color was so light that it was almost transparent, which made it strange, especially when gazed at closely by these eyes. Heinrich actually felt for a moment that he was a prey locked on by a predator, and his eyes twitched.
The eyes of the guests converged on him, and some of them recognized Lin Xu and were whispering. Thinking that Lin Xu did not like being surrounded by people, Heinrich turned his head and said something to Arnold, who was following behind him.
Soon, the banquet hall was once again filled with a peaceful buzz of conversation, only this time, the center of the conversation was mostly Heinrich Chu. Heinrich looked down and once again met the gaze of Lin Xu, who was only slightly shorter than him, “Hello, Mr. Lin Xu, we meet again.”
“Good evening, Marshal Chu.” When Lin Xu replied, Heinrich was silent for some reason, so he took the rare step of speaking up, “Marshal Chu, what did you want to see me about?”
…
“Say hello.”
In the absence of Arnold the lubricant, the other two officers following the Marshal today were unfamiliar faces, looking rather respectful, and did not seem to have the self-awareness to help the Marshal round up, allowing a simple and strange word to spit out of Heinrich’s mouth.
Heinrich pursed his lips after he finished, seemingly not satisfied with his own answer, and was almost tempted to avert his eyes by Lin Xu’s direct gaze. But Lin Xu suddenly raised his lips and smiled, not in a hypocritical polite way, he curled his eyes and smiled genuinely. Heinrich had only seen him smile at Marianna from the sidelines, and now that he saw it, his eyes suddenly stopped trying to move away.
Ryan was left alone with his mouth open in shock, so Professor Lin’s facial muscles that control smiles were not necrotic? He quickly tried to cover his mouth again, hoping the Lord Marshal did not notice his discomposure.
Heinrich indeed did not notice that there was another person behind Lin Xu. He looked into Lin Xu’s eyes and felt like a celestial body captured by the gravity of a black hole, unable to escape. But he really didn’t know what to say either.
Heinrich Chu was the invincible sword of the Empire, as if he was born for war and Imperial glory. Every time he opened his mouth, he seemed to be either conferring firmly and decisively with a colleague or politician on the state of the war, or giving orders without question. Normal, purposeless communication seemed distant from a past life.
Did he have an agenda for Lin Xu?
Agenda? Nope.
It was inappropriate for Heinrich to take offense at a momentary instinctive reaction, but why did he subconsciously come this way when he caught Lin Xu looking at him?
But why did he subconsciously move towards him when he noticed Lin Xu looking at him? Lin Xu replied, “Thank you, Marshal, for your greeting. You are dressed nicely today, especially the brooch, it suits your silver hair.”
Heinrich looked down at the jeweled brooch on his chest, and took it off with his upper hand. It was a sparkling pale silver gemstone, simply designed in the shape of a diamond, with no unnecessary decoration, simple, cold and beautiful.
Heinrich found it more appealing to Lin Xu’s gray eyes.
So he held out his hand to Lin Xu, and the brooch lay still in his palm, “if Mr. Lin Xu likes it, I’ll give it to you as an apology for my offense.”
This time, Lin Xu was surprised, he just wanted to open a conversation, ask Heinrich which designer the brooch with the crystal nucleus came from, but he didn’t expect Heinrich to give him the brooch directly.
What did Heinrich do to offend him? Did he kick down his door? Or the strange story of the dragon and the princess? But Lin Xu felt that his response was no better.
—
Arnold, who was following the Marshal, told everyone to continue the party without paying attention to the Marshal himself, but most of them couldn’t. At least the sisters in the omega noblewomen’s circle still covered the lower half of their faces with their fans and glanced at the Marshal’s tall back, if at all.
One asked, “Marianna, does your student know Lord Marshal?”
Marianna grunted, tilted her head and drained her glass, raised her hand and put the glass on a passing waiter’s tray and replaced it with a glass of juice, “Yes.”
She continued to take small sips with some annoyance, not understanding why Heinrich had repeatedly approached Lin Xu. She knew her student was not interested in political struggle, Marianna had been trying hard to keep the vortex out of him, and Heinrich’s presence had ruined a rare peace of mind.
“So…do you know whether the Marshal has the will to marry or not? If so, the noble ladies and gentry can make early preparations.”
Marianna was angry, very tempted to say that Marshal is not, but finally gave up and took another sip.
“No need to count on Marshal Chu all the time, there are plenty of alphas of the right age, don’t make it difficult for your… Pfft–” Just halfway through the words, Marianna suddenly spurted out a mouthful of blood, abdominal cramps erupted instantly, stiffness and pain instantly spread down the blood veins to the whole body. The glass that could not be held in her hand fell to the ground and shattered with a splash.
The noblewomen were shocked by the blood, screaming and backing away. The whole hall was quiet for a moment, everyone’s attention was drawn to it, and then a fierce shout erupted.
Marianna fell down trembling and was caught by her husband beside her, “Marianna! Marianna! Hold on, doctor? Where’s the doctor!”
Lin Xu turned his head and saw Marianna falling to the ground, breathing weakly, her white dress stained with blood, through the gap of countless people moving their bodies. The smooth cut of the gem reflects the scene in the light, a Black dot flies on the cut and enlarges, and the sharp shape gradually becomes clear.
Almost instantly, Heinrich swooped down and pinned Lin Xu to the ground. The silvery-grey stone was thrown into mid-air and shattered into countless pieces by the impact of the whirling bullets. The sound of a gunshot brought Lin Xu back to his senses, and evoked real panic among the guests, as screams spread rapidly through the hall.
