Chapter 23: I am the Only One Who Understands You

The person who saved Zhou Yan from embarrassment was standing outside the courtyard with a carriage behind him, and when Zhou Yan saw him, he quickly walked out and opened the door.

“You finally gave up and came?”

The person who came was none other than Liu Yi, who had provided goods for Zhou Yan before.

Liu Yi’s wife was in poor health and had been suffering from persistent pain; she was taking painkillers made by Zhou Yan. Although Zhou Yan advised him many times to bring his wife here to see a doctor, Liu Yi never complied, and just put off bringing his wife out for so long. He brought a carriage this time, and Zhou Yan guessed that the one sitting inside that carriage should be his wife.

Liu Yi first glanced at Zhou Yan, then looked at the courtyard behind him, and his ever-serious face even showed a rare smile. “What’s going on in your house?”

The reconstruction of Zhou Yan’s house had not yet begun, and the courtyard was in a very bad condition, half of it was in ruins.

Zhou Yan only opened the courtyard door and gestured for him to come in. “Coming all the way here, you didn’t come all this way just to mock me, did you?”

A dull, tinkling bell rang as Liu Yi drove the carriage into the courtyard, Zhou Yan knowingly asked, “Who is inside the carriage?”

Liu Yi sighed and lifted the curtain of the carriage to reveal the person inside. A pale woman wearing a heavy cloak was huddled in the corner of the carriage, looking very frail. After seeing Zhou Yan, the other tried to lift her head and nod at him, and Zhou Yan nodded slightly as a greeting in return.

Liu Yi quickly put down the curtain, as if afraid of the cold wind outside blowing in, so that the woman would suffer again. “This is my wife, I mentioned to you… Before you had been asking me to bring her over to see the doctor, I was afraid that the bumpy journey would aggravate the condition, so I kept putting it off, but I did not expect that the condition was still aggravated. I recently used the medicine you gave but there is still pain, I could only bring her over.”

Liu Yi’s wife’s name was Chen Xueyuan. After so long, it was the first time he saw his patient in person. Zhou Yan heard that she was getting worse and subconsciously frowned. “You should have brought her here long ago.”

Liu Yi’s personality was silent, and him saying so many words was already the limit, so in response to Zhou Yan’s questioning, he was silent again.

Zhou Yan had to remind him, “Help her into the house, it’s too cold here.”

Liu Yi nodded hastily and lifted the curtain of the carriage to help the woman down, but it was not until she got off that Zhou Yan realized that she was still holding a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes in her arms.

Zhou Yan thought for a moment and understood: their family only had Liu Yi and his wife. If they went out together, there was no way to leave the child at home, and they had to take her with them on the road.

Liu Yi was busy supporting his wife, so he didn’t have time to hold his daughter. He took her from his wife’s arms and handed her directly to Zhou Yan. “Help hold her for a while.”

“…” Zhou Yan subconsciously hugged the child, and only after feeling the soft touch in his arms, he froze violently. He had never held a child before; the child was soft and spongy, like a boneless worm. Zhou Yan did not dare to use any strength, fearing that a little more strength would break the child’s bones.

“What’s wrong? Like being cast by a fixation spell.”

A gloating voice came from behind, Zhou Yan turned around and found Luo Futu standing behind him at some point.

This person is really, really out of this world…

Luo Futu looked outstanding. Liu Yi and Chen Xueyuan immediately noticed him, but both of them froze for a moment, and then returned to normal. Chen Xueyuan smiled and coughed twice. “Dr. Zhou has never held a child, right? Cough… It’s okay, the child is not that fragile, Dr. Zhou does not need to be nervous.”

Liu Yi had told Chen Xueyuan that this visit was to see her, and naturally treated Zhou Yan as a doctor.

Luo Futu stared at the stiff Zhou Yan for half a day and found it very interesting, smiling brightly on the side. “So that’s how it is, I didn’t expect to see such a side of Dr. Zhou.”

Zhou Yan stiffened his arm and glanced at Liu Yi, saw that he was politely helping Chen Xueyuan get off the carriage, and did not mean to save himself, and looked at Luo Futu beside him, and met his bad smile. Zhou Yan was suddenly upset in his heart.

The child seemed to feel Zhou Yan’s mood change, stretched in his arms, and moved. Zhou Yan was like a headless fly, wanted to send this baby away as if he was holding a bomb, and could not move. Panicking, in an emergency, he put the infant in his arms into Luo Futu’s.

“…”

Zhou Yan watched as the smile on Luo Futu’s face instantly froze, and then calmly showed Liu Yi and his wife into the door, as if he did not notice his situation. Liu Yi worried about his wife, was not polite, and directly went into the room. Zhou Yan followed closely, and Luo Futu, holding the baby, also followed behind Zhou Yan.

After the couple entered the room, Zhou Yan turned around and raised his eyebrows at Luo Futu. “I didn’t expect to see such a side of the high priest.”

Luo Futu knew he was getting back at him and stiffened his lips. “You have a lot of nerve.”

“Didn’t you know that the first day?”

Luo Futu laughed strangely and suddenly moved closer to Zhou Yan and said close to his ear, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll strangle this kid to death?”

His voice was eerie when he spoke, quite a sickly style.

“…” Zhou Yan’s feet moved. He turned around and snatched the baby back from Luo Futu’s arms, scolding him in a low voice, “Give her back to me! Damn pervert.”

This devil had an unpredictable personality, who knew what he would do! Liu Yi had not had a very easy time bringing his true love here, and if he really hurt his child because of his own mischief, Zhou Yan would be very self-reproachful.

This little baby, who was snatched and grabbed and changed to so many embraces, still slept peacefully, having the appearance as if she had seen a lot of the world.

Zhou Yan carried the baby into the house; Luo Futu stared at his back with a faint smile, and also followed into the house.

Liu Yi had been helping Zhou Yan to find the east and the west for so many years, most of his instruments, reagents and other raw materials were bought from him, and the two are considered old friends. Even if Zhou Yan had such a cold personality, he could not help but treat him as a mature person. Liu Yi naturally was not blindly polite with Zhou Yan. After entering the room, he found the house was just as chaotic as outside, so he helped Chen Xueyuan to sit on the sofa to rest.

Zhou Yan entered the room, sent the small child to Liu Yi, and exhaled with relief. Luo Futu also followed into the room, and just stood far away from the wall, looking at their side with a smile on his pretty face, like a vase—yet only Zhou Yan could see clearly, the smile in his eyes did not have a temperature. He didn’t know what the hell he was thinking.

Chen Xueyuan saw that no one was talking, looked around and hesitantly spoke, “I’ve used Dr. Zhou’s medicine many times before, but today is the first time I’ve met him. I didn’t expect Dr. Zhou to have guests at home… We’re not here at the right time, are we?”

The person she was talking about was obviously Luo Futu. She must also be curious about this guy, but Zhou Yan didn’t really want to introduce him, so he casually said, “It’s just a sleepover, don’t mind him. You rest a little and start treatment. Later, I’ll help you check your body.”

Liu Yi and Chen Xueyuan glanced at each other, the latter nodded and looked at Zhou Yan gratefully. “Thank you, Dr. Zhou.”

Zhou Yan smiled at her, and thought in his heart, Liu Yi was really lucky to marry such a person. This woman, although her appearance was ordinary, she looked like the type that would make people feel happy. Liu Yi was truly at the end of his wandering career.

Whether it was psychologically or physically.

At that moment, Jerry rolled out of the kitchen with a tea tray on his head in a bone-shaking manner and stopped in front of them with a steaming cup of tea on the tray. The little robot faced Chen Xueyuan and said, “Welcome, please have some tea.”

Chen Xueyuan was surprised for a moment, and then reached for the cup of tea, and said, “Thank you…”

“If you’re not afraid to die, go ahead and drink, huh huh…”

Before her fingers touched the cup, Jerry’s small body suddenly burst out with a strange and eerie humming sound, and his cute face was very inconsistent—but it made this scene more in line with the plot of some horror legend, such as mystics stuffing things with evil spirits and making them into cursed dolls…

“…”

“…”

“…”

For a moment, the scene froze. Chen Xueyuan reflexively retracted the hand that wanted to take the cup of tea—she seemed to be scared to death.

“Huh…” Luo Futu, who was originally standing by the wall pretending to be a vase, gave a strange laugh, the same sound as the one made by little Jerry. He walked over with a smile on his face in full view of everyone, and these few steps were taken with a powerful aura and poise, as if a lotus flower could be born under his feet. Luo Futu bent down and picked up the teacup on the tray and placed it in front of Chen Xueyuan, and picked up Jerry from the ground. And then he politely explained, “Excuse me, it has recently broken, please have some tea.”

It might have been more convincing if the smile on his face wasn’t so unpleasant.

Only then did Zhou Yan remember that he had given Jerry to Luo Futu earlier, and he had complained that his recordings were too monotonous, and he wanted to record them himself… That’s all he recorded? Why can one be so perverted even in private?

Chen Xueyuan’s emotional intelligence was quite high, but even if she wanted to support the scene, she also did not quite have the courage to touch this cup of tea. She was a Zedoary Continent native, and hearing about a mystic left her in awe, and seeing this scene, she subconsciously felt that this cup of tea had some kind of curse…

Chen Xueyuan forced a smile and turned to Zhou Yan. “Dr. Zhou, why not first check my body? Our home is far away, and I’m afraid of delaying you. It will be late to return if we wait.”

After this little episode, Zhou Yan also knew that the atmosphere could no longer be eased, rage toward Luo Futu lingered in his heart a hundred times, and his face also became more and more cold. “Liu Yi, you first take your wife to wait in the bedroom. I’ll prepare.”

There was no ward here, so Zhou Yan was willing to contribute his bedroom for the time being, just like he was willing to let Luo Futu sleep in his own bedroom in order to save him.

The two men entered the room, and Zhou Yan was about to follow them when Luo Futu suddenly pulled Zhou Yan from behind. Zhou Yan was angry and turned around to give him a hard look, warning him, “You better shut up and not say a word.”

Luo Futu looked at him good-naturedly and curled his lips. “Why are you so angry? It was just a prank. How would I know someone would come to the house today?”

Zhou Yan did not say another word, pulled back his sleeve and wanted to go to the bedroom, but Luo Futu refused to give up and pulled his small arm. “But I really do not like them.”

Zhou Yan frowned. “They are my friends, you don’t need to like them.”

“Friends? They don’t deserve you.”

“…”

Luo Futu stared at him seriously. “If they are friends, they are afraid to drink your tea just because Jerry said a few bad words? Are they too stupid, or do they simply not trust you? Whatever the reason, they don’t deserve you.”

Zhou Yan froze for a moment. “Normal people would have concerns when they hear those kinds of words, and you’re too demanding of your friends.”

Luo Futu did not let go of his hand and stared into Zhou Yan’s eyes, speaking in a tone like a confession: “Too demanding? I can do it, I’m the only one who understands you.”

“…” Zhou Yan had never hated his smart brain and superior comprehension as much as now. He actually read something else from these words of Luo Futu: he didn’t dislike Liu Yi and his wife because they were ordinary people, he just didn’t like that he was too close to other people.

Or rather, didn’t like him being close to people other than him.

However, Zhou Yan did not have any evidence to prove this.

Once this impression was created, it could not be reversed. No matter what reasons were used to explain it, it could not erase the initial impression. Too much had happened in the past few days for Zhou Yan to remain absolutely calm, and he broke away from Luo Futu’s hand and walked away. “… Arrogant.”

I always imagine ZY’s home to be small, but then with a courtyard that can accommodate a horse and carriage, a cellar and attic, it can’t be that small! I can’t picture it.
If LF could regain enough of his powers, he could probably rebuild the home and help LY’s wife.
I hope possessiveness is the only reason LF isn’t keen on them.
Thank you both for the chapter.
