SUMMARY:

As the grandmaster who founded the Demonic Sect, Wei WuXian roamed the world in his wanton ways, hated by millions for the chaos he created. In the end, he was backstabbed by his dearest shidi and killed by powerful clans that combined to overpower him. He incarnates into the body of a lunatic who was abandoned by his clan and is later, unwillingly, taken away by a famous cultivator among the clans—Lan WangJi, his archenemy. This marks the start of a thrilling yet hilarious journey of attacking monsters, solving mysteries, and raising children. From the mutual flirtation along the way, Wei WuXian slowly realizes that Lan WangJi, a seemingly haughty and indifferent poker-face, holds more feelings for Wei WuXian than he is letting on.

(NOTE to all the readers coming here after watching ‘The Untamed,’ this novel is a DANMEI (a romance novel featuring two MEN) we are not adding anything to these chapters. There will be sex scenes in later chapters, if you feel uncomfortable about two MEN kissing and loving one another, please, go away. Do not claim we are adding anything.)

Prologue

ā€œGreat news! Wei WuXian has died!ā€

Less than a day has passed since the siege in LuanZang Hill, and the news spreads through the cultivation world as if it sprouted wings, surpassing even the speed of warfare.

For a while, from the most prominent clans to rogue cultivators, everyone is discussing the siege that was lead by the Four Great Clans and followed by hundreds of smaller ones.

ā€œThe YiLing Patriarch has died? Who could have killed him?ā€

ā€œWho other than his shidi, Jiang Cheng, putting an end to his own relative for the greater good. Jiang Cheng led the Four Clans of YunmengJiang, LanlingJin, GusuLan, and QingheNie to destroy his ā€œdenā€ā€”LuanZang Hill.ā€

ā€œI must say, good riddance!ā€

ā€œGood riddance indeed! We finally eliminated this scourge.ā€

ā€œIf not for the YunmengJiang clan’s adopting and teaching him, he would have been a hobo living on the streets, let alone causing mayhem as bold as the ones these days. The head of the Jiang clan raised him as her own child, yet he defected them and became the enemy of the cultivation world, bringing shame upon the the Jiang clan, even leading to its near-extermination. He is the prime example of biting the hand that feeds him!ā€

ā€œJiang Cheng allowed this fellow to live for too long. If I were him, at the time of the defection, I wouldn’t have just stabbed him. In fact, I would have thoroughly examined the disciples of the clan again, so that he doesn’t do those crazy things he did later on. Who cares about the so called ā€˜considerations’ that he gave to his childhood friend.ā€

ā€œThat’s merely hearsay. Although Jiang Cheng was one of the main forces, he did not give Wei WuXian the final blow. Because he cultivates the Demon Path, Wei WuXian’s powers had backfired and he was ripped to pieces.ā€

ā€œHahahaha… That’s karma! The ghost soldiers that he created are like unleashed dogs, biting everyone that they come across. It serves him right to be chewed to death!ā€

ā€œBut, if not for Jiang Cheng making a plan that aimed at Wei WuXian’s weaknesses, the siege might not have succeeded. Should I remind you folks of the item that Wei WuXian possesses? Did you forget about the day that three thousand skilled cultivators were completely annihilated?ā€

ā€œI heard that it was more than three thousand, possibly five thousand.ā€

ā€œHe’s most certainly out of his mind.ā€

ā€œIt’s a good thing that he destroyed that evil weapon before he died. Otherwise, if it was left in this world to harm humankind, his sins would have been worse.ā€

ā€œOh well… You know, back then, Wei WuXian was one of the most promising cultivators, coming from a highly distinguished clan and finding success at a young age. How on Earth did he end up where he is now?ā€

ā€œThis proves that one can only cultivate by following the right path. Using these dishonest practices would only seem beneficial at first glance. Look, what happened in the end? Not even a whole corpse was left of him.ā€

ā€œNot everything was because of his cultivation path. Wei WuXian’s personality is quite immoral. One’s deeds will be paid, one way or another; what goes around always comes around.ā€

…

After Wei WuXian’s death, the period is drawn on the topic. The discussions of the people are mostly the same, with a few unconventional opinions being brought down immediately.

However, the elephant in the room stayed in the back of everyone’s mind.

Nobody could summon Wei WuXian’s soul, which meant that his soul had disappeared.

It might have been torn apart by the millions of ghosts that devoured him.

Or, it might have escaped.

If was the first, then all is well. Then again, nobody doubts the fact that the YiLing Patriarch has the power to move mountains and empty seas. If was the last, his soul would eventually return to revive in his body. When the day comes, the cultivation world, or even all of mortal land, would be faced with the most insane damnation and revenge, sinking into nothing but chaos and despair.

The various clans set one hundred and twenty stone beasts on top of LuanZang Hill and initiated frequent soul-summoning rituals, followed by heightened vigilance and searches for strange occurrences from all over the world.

In the first year, nothing happened.

In the second year, nothing happened.

In the third year, nothing happened.

…

In the thirteenth year, nothing happened either.

More and more people were starting to believe that, maybe, the YiLing Patriarch actually perished.

Even if he was capable of turning the world upside down, it was finally his turn to be toppled over.

Nobody would remain at the top for all of eternity—legends are only legends.

  1. When I first found the Grand Master of Demonic Cultivation was in Youtube. I saw an AMV that is centered on Lan Wanji & Wei Ying on my suggested videos or some sorts. At that time, I’m just searching a new anime to watch and when I saw their fighting scene and how the characters were beautifully drawn. I got excited and I was like I’m gonna watch this.
So, I went and watch it. Finish it even, never realizing that it was a BL. Days passed and I realized I badly want to know the rest of the story. So searching it in Google it lead me here. and Voila! This is when I found out that it’s a BL.
I can’t help but laugh about this because I even urged my boyfriend to watch the anime since the fighting scene is dope. He’s actually the one who gave hints if its actually a BL since there’s only a few female characters and it is centered LWJ & Wei Ying. That’s triggered my Fujoshi blood haha lols! I was thinking ‘Is it possible?’ and yup it is indeed a BL.

  2. The ghost soldiers that he created are like unleashed dogs, biting everyone that they come across.
I read this and immediately thought, DOGS?!? Run Wei WuXian! Go find a LAN Wangji to hide behind, quick! Then I realized it was talking about the soilders and just thought… wow, that was sad.

  3. “Nobody would remain at the top for all of eternity—legends are only legends”

This sentence… Why it struck my heart so hard.

Your translation is so easy to read. Thx for your hard work. I tried to imagine translating this novel to my language… Brrr…so scary.

I watch the donghua, give me a picture about the story. So I better prepare my self for the heartache to come.

    1. I am here! I’ve watched the donghua and am currently watching the live drama on Yt, The Untamed, and now I’m finally here to start the novel. Your is great so far and I’m looking forward to the heartache this is about to put me through. I’m hoping with the story being longer here there are some good times waiting for me after all the pain that donghua and the drama didn’t give me. And some real displays of love between my boys!!

  4. I started watching the cdrama adaptation and I’m so excited to read the story of it whilst I wait for more episodes to come out. Thank u for this

  5. I’m sorry that I just left a comment here when I already finished reading all the chapters. I’m in the middle of re-reading it, because heck, I missed them already even though I only finished reading yesterday.

This is the most important thing that I need to say:

God. Thank you so much for translating this. More than 400k words, 3000-9000 words on each chapter. Wow. You guys are amazing and your hard work need to be appreciated more! Thank you so much!

  6. Reading this book for the 5th time.. seriously I’m so hooked up with this novel. But I really wonder If anyone know where is the phrase “playing inquiry for 13 years, waiting for the unreturning one” came from?

      1. The donghua implies that LWJ did that, yet in the novel he never did so, and tbh imo it wld b ooc. LWJ was done (in a way) with his mourning, and was willing to move forward to honnor WWX’s memory, what he always believed in. So LWJ educated his disciples, opening their mind to see beyong the “evil path” at the same time as giving them strong protection to avoid WWX’s fate, but it wld be wrong for him to believe that WWX wld come back, or linger. It was not his way, and LWJ knows it, unlike JC who is unable to accept it…

      1. However the novel is much better than the Untamed series. To be honest, even if I appreciated the series, I was disappointed because the series didn’t follow the novel. I reread the novel again and I am still in love with it. Manhua (sorry if I misspelled the word) follow the novel and the animated series is very well done too, almost perfect, a must to see but nothing, in my heart and head, will be better than the novel. I read other BL but this one is a masterpiece. The translator K (and her team) did an amazing and beautiful work, and the author as well. The best BL I ever read.

  7. Ready, set, go! This is the first BL novel I read that made me discover that there is a genre like this. I honestly didn’t know. I was quite surprised. Well, the story didn’t focus on the BL story but I was touched by how much the ML loved the MC for so many years. Lan Zhan was the best leading man I have met so far, that includes all genre. Faithful, doting, and passionate. I’m re reading this for the second time because the story was unique to me in an inexplicable way. Wei Ying, is such an innocent and lovely boy yet so funny at the same time. Lan Zhan is a keepeer, Wei Ying with his antics made me snort in laughter. They’re perfect together.

  8. I finally had the courage to stop hesitating and read this novel!!! I really hope there is alot to read!!!!! I loved the donghua, manhua and the drama!!! Im ready for the novel and the audio drama!!

  9. Hi there! When a GDM amv was first recommended by YouTube a couple of months back, I ignored it. Then it appeared again some time later. I think was one from a Romantic Moments series. I was hooked! And to think it isn’t just a drama series with super shuai ger acting in it, but also an anime and the novel itself, I was enraptured!! In heaven!! And then it hit me that the novel was from China and of course had to be in Chinese and being a banana, I fell from heaven and into the pit of despair! For someone who grew up speaking English, whose spoken Cantonese is only passable (mostly used for ordering food LOL) and whose spoken Mandarin only adequate for conversing with preschoolers, how many aeons would it take me to inch my way, one painstaking character at a time, through the novel using Google Translate? Ye Gods! Have mercy!!

And they did!! Thanks to you kind souls, I was saved!!! And in BL heaven once more!! šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚

I’ve actually sped through to Chap 30 but decided I should give thanks to you all before I go any further (and it ended at a cliffhanger too). And I have been, in my heart, but how would anyone know that??

So here I go, from the top again. No big sacrifice for me, I’m sure. Thank you for your efforts and excellent, top-notch work!!

    1. Since he destroyed the tyger seal amulet, he had no more protection (remember how and why he created the amulet in first place) is he was devoured by his ghouls and somehow I feel, he was ready to die because of the loss of his sidhjie ( sister) and I won’t tell more because I do not want to spoil anything for the first readers of the wonderful novel….Only I read it more than one time since I am in love with it. Must to read.

      1. WARNING: SPOILERS

The tiger seal is not a “protection”, it’s more a “duplicating tool” that allows to manipulate ressentful energies outside of his body rather than through it, thus allowing him more rest as the Sunshot campaign was taking a toll on his health.

We never have the exact answer to that thorny question, but we can speculate quite closely. We know for sure that it was a backlash, and that he was “eaten alive by his own ghouls”. We also know that he had managed to destroy 1 half of the seal during the 3 months between the Nightless city massacre and the Burial Mound siege, and that he was about to destroy the 2nd half when the sects came upon him.

Also, he still wanted to protect the Wen remnants, and still had the task to fully destroy the tool he saw as too powerfull for even him to control, so he was definitely not ready to die, even if his shijie’s death was still painful to him.

Now for the speculations. It seems to have been quite an ordeal to destroy that 1st piece, so he might not have been at his peak when they fell on him. Maybe he had even started the process of destroying the 2nd half and the situation wld be very unstable.

Plus he was mentally already weakened by years of the demonic cultivation (using yin energy) without a golden core (based on yang energy that wld act as a counterbalance), being constantly surrounded by the ressentful energy of all those jealous ppl. Plus, he had just lost those he thought were the last ones to love him (JYL & the Wen siblings), love being the buffer for that negative energy from the jealousy.

Now, you can add some more infos by reading between the lines of his pov throughout the novel, like the fact that he has such low selfesteem as never considering his own worth and value, to the point of selfsacrifice. JC reproaches this often enough, and the only comment we have from WWX on the subject is when suddenly he understands how it was “annoying” for JC when he’s faced with the same thing from the Wen siblings, and he’s unable to prevent it. Yet, even in his reincarnation, he doesn’t change behavior one bit, so it’s pretty safe to assume it was still very true just before his death.

And then few last interesting hints… When JC recognizes him, he doesn’t kill him, nor even torture him, even though it’s said that this is his usual way to deal with ppl he only think may be WWX or cultivating the demonic path. No, the only thing he does, is asking if there’s anything WWX wants to tell him. Like if he’s digging for answers, to understand something… Oh and reminder here, he was apparently the foremost witness of WWX’s horrific death… another reminder of our dear tsundere’s nature, he both suffers from a severe inferiority complex toward WWX and feels a deeply fierce love for him. When in the present WWX draw the attraction flag on himself, JC is amoung the 1st (and few…) to rush back inside the cave to help him even without his spiritual energy… is he living again one of his worst nightmare, unwilling to risk loosing the shixiong he was once unable to save? Yes he might have been 1st line at the siege, but was he there to attack or to protect?

And let’s not forget WWX’s biaised pov, amplifying his responsibilities in disasters yet keeping silent on his heroism…

So, when everything grew to become a real dangerous mess, was it truly a careless move that induced the famous backlash, or was it actually the only mean WWX found to avoid repeating the Nightless city massacre? With how smart and crafty he has always been, I know the answer I believe in…
