SUMMARY:
As the grandmaster who founded the Demonic Sect, Wei WuXian roamed the world in his wanton ways, hated by millions for the chaos he created. In the end, he was backstabbed by his dearest shidi and killed by powerful clans that combined to overpower him. He incarnates into the body of a lunatic who was abandoned by his clan and is later, unwillingly, taken away by a famous cultivator among the clansâLan WangJi, his archenemy. This marks the start of a thrilling yet hilarious journey of attacking monsters, solving mysteries, and raising children. From the mutual flirtation along the way, Wei WuXian slowly realizes that Lan WangJi, a seemingly haughty and indifferent poker-face, holds more feelings for Wei WuXian than he is letting on.
(NOTE to all the readers coming here after watching ‘The Untamed,’ this novel is a DANMEI (a romance novel featuring two MEN) we are not adding anything to these chapters. There will be sex scenes in later chapters, if you feel uncomfortable about two MEN kissing and loving one another, please, go away. Do not claim we are adding anything.)
Prologue
âGreat news! Wei WuXian has died!â
Less than a day has passed since the siege in LuanZang Hill, and the news spreads through the cultivation world as if it sprouted wings, surpassing even the speed of warfare.
For a while, from the most prominent clans to rogue cultivators, everyone is discussing the siege that was lead by the Four Great Clans and followed by hundreds of smaller ones.
âThe YiLing Patriarch has died? Who could have killed him?â
âWho other than his shidi, Jiang Cheng, putting an end to his own relative for the greater good. Jiang Cheng led the Four Clans of YunmengJiang, LanlingJin, GusuLan, and QingheNie to destroy his âdenââLuanZang Hill.â
âI must say, good riddance!â
âGood riddance indeed! We finally eliminated this scourge.â
âIf not for the YunmengJiang clanâs adopting and teaching him, he would have been a hobo living on the streets, let alone causing mayhem as bold as the ones these days. The head of the Jiang clan raised him as her own child, yet he defected them and became the enemy of the cultivation world, bringing shame upon the the Jiang clan, even leading to its near-extermination. He is the prime example of biting the hand that feeds him!â
âJiang Cheng allowed this fellow to live for too long. If I were him, at the time of the defection, I wouldnât have just stabbed him. In fact, I would have thoroughly examined the disciples of the clan again, so that he doesnât do those crazy things he did later on. Who cares about the so called âconsiderationsâ that he gave to his childhood friend.â
âThatâs merely hearsay. Although Jiang Cheng was one of the main forces, he did not give Wei WuXian the final blow. Because he cultivates the Demon Path, Wei WuXianâs powers had backfired and he was ripped to pieces.â
âHahahaha⊠Thatâs karma! The ghost soldiers that he created are like unleashed dogs, biting everyone that they come across. It serves him right to be chewed to death!â
âBut, if not for Jiang Cheng making a plan that aimed at Wei WuXianâs weaknesses, the siege might not have succeeded. Should I remind you folks of the item that Wei WuXian possesses? Did you forget about the day that three thousand skilled cultivators were completely annihilated?â
âI heard that it was more than three thousand, possibly five thousand.â
âHeâs most certainly out of his mind.â
âItâs a good thing that he destroyed that evil weapon before he died. Otherwise, if it was left in this world to harm humankind, his sins would have been worse.â
âOh well⊠You know, back then, Wei WuXian was one of the most promising cultivators, coming from a highly distinguished clan and finding success at a young age. How on Earth did he end up where he is now?â
âThis proves that one can only cultivate by following the right path. Using these dishonest practices would only seem beneficial at first glance. Look, what happened in the end? Not even a whole corpse was left of him.â
âNot everything was because of his cultivation path. Wei WuXianâs personality is quite immoral. Oneâs deeds will be paid, one way or another; what goes around always comes around.â
âŠ
After Wei WuXianâs death, the period is drawn on the topic. The discussions of the people are mostly the same, with a few unconventional opinions being brought down immediately.
However, the elephant in the room stayed in the back of everyoneâs mind.
Nobody could summon Wei WuXianâs soul, which meant that his soul had disappeared.
It might have been torn apart by the millions of ghosts that devoured him.
Or, it might have escaped.
If was the first, then all is well. Then again, nobody doubts the fact that the YiLing Patriarch has the power to move mountains and empty seas. If was the last, his soul would eventually return to revive in his body. When the day comes, the cultivation world, or even all of mortal land, would be faced with the most insane damnation and revenge, sinking into nothing but chaos and despair.
The various clans set one hundred and twenty stone beasts on top of LuanZang Hill and initiated frequent soul-summoning rituals, followed by heightened vigilance and searches for strange occurrences from all over the world.
In the first year, nothing happened.
In the second year, nothing happened.
In the third year, nothing happened.
âŠ
In the thirteenth year, nothing happened either.
More and more people were starting to believe that, maybe, the YiLing Patriarch actually perished.
Even if he was capable of turning the world upside down, it was finally his turn to be toppled over.
Nobody would remain at the top for all of eternityâlegends are only legends.

I guess i will re read this novel for nth time until the anime version finish. Im still waiting for it.
Thanks for translating, I’m rereading after watching the drama.
Love it
Haven’t decided of watching the drama. but watched the first episode of the anime and planning the keep the novel and amine going together. So that i don’t miss anything. i m so into this already. thanks for translating.
Read this novel n number of times but still whenever I open this it seems as if something is pulling me into this novel to read it again and again with the same thrill that I experienced the first time I read it.
Really thankful to the author for this amazing and everlasting piece of Art. this will forever remain immortal in the hearts of its readers.
Also really really thankful to the team of translators, without them it would be impossible kind of thing for us international fans to enjoy this Piece of Art…..
And finally, loved the main characters: Wei Ying and Lan Zhan
I’m here for the nth time….the nostalgia….
Here again for the ,I lost the count. I am addict and so in love with this masterpiece of novel. New readers, you will not be disapointed. Enjoy it.đ
Indeed, maybe we should warn them though… THIS IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!! Step away right now if you’re not willing to suffer the pain of withdrawal unless you reread this piece of art again and again…
I don’t know why..but..the translator’s note to readers made me smile like a foolđ
I really hope I’ll have some patience, or i’ll end up reading this from day to night
No patience can resist this amazing novel… sorry to disappoint you… đ
‘When the day comes, the cultivation world, or even all of mortal land’ cultivation world or mortal land?? what do they mean with this?? 2 worlds? i’m new to historical novel well i’m new to novel (i never read novel yet) but thats not importen lol
Well, this is not simply historical novel, but xianxia, aka with magic wielders called “cultivators” that extand their lifespan hrough that magic, and they aim to get immortal by that mean. They live beside regular “mortals”, but appart from them too in a way, like “nobles” and “commoners”.
So what they mean here is that if WWX was to come back, he’s so evil that both “worlds” aka nobles and commoners alike would be affected by his horrible deeds.
Hope it helps, mostly those that may read this comment since I expect the original commentator to have discovered it by themselves reading further!
i’m here re reading the novel, because i truly miss cql/mdzs so much ):
No matter how many times I read this I still get upset with how disgusting these people are talking about Wei Wuxian’s death.
Love this

Thanks for the english translation. I have been searching for the original on english. Maybe now I can read about the wedding I keep hearing about. Will there ever be an official english publication you think.
Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no wedding in the official novel, it happens offscreen, or in fanfics.
So can anyone tell me how long does it take to get over this novel?
Like , damn this is my third time reading this novel continually; without a break with any other novel.
This book is damn good, and the characters, story, and conclusion of the book is outstanding, salute to the writer!!!
I can’t … I’m in the same boat as you … read this novel so many times, watched The Untamed, the donghua, read the manhua, listened to the audio drama (I lost the link unfortunately) and I have read and reviewed almost every Fanfic that has been written or made on WangXian … I’m addicted to them, to this couple. Of course I have read other novels on this site and some are very good but I always come back to MDZS. I wonder if the author was amazed that her novel became such a worldwide hit (success) … Sometimes I have the impression that the author has discovered some sort of old hidden manuscript and has transcribed a wonderful and true story of love that was long ago. I love them so much, they make me believe that true love is stronger than anything if you have faith in it and in your partner.
Same boat! Lol so cannot tell you how long or how many times it takes to get over it coz… I’m not there yet, read the novel around 10 times (lost track), watch both versions of the drama (regular 50 episodes and special edition 20 episodes) at least 5-6 times, the donghua 3-4 times, read the manhua 4-5 times, then tried some fanfics, read all by Sinocchi and enjoyed most of them but didn’t find another author I like, then listed to all the audio drama I cld find on YT, and still hopping to find the entire thing… Then back again to read all the comments to immerge myself some more… Read and watched other stuff in the meantime, but still need my addiction again and again in between!
I used to think that The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan had the most amazing foreshadowing, but the more I reread MDZS the more I’m amazed that in such a condensed way MXTX was able to put a meaning behind every single tiny detail.
I used to think that Sherlock Holmes was the most observant of detective using details to understand the plot, now I’m impressed at the wits of our beloved WWX.
I used to think that Frank Herbert was the ultimate genius in understanding human nature and include amazing life lessons in Dune, now I keep making parallels between the real world and the cultivation world, and discuss with my daughter (who introduced me to the Untamed) of what she can learn from all those amazingly deep characters.
I used to think that romances were usually either too good to feel true or too mundane to move me much… now… well, you know how we all feel! Sorry Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliett can die again without me (us?) shedding a tear for them…
So yah, dunno if we can actually leave that boat ever again…
I watched The Untamed and wanted to read the source novel. Thank you for the translation.
You will not regret, beleive me. I read the novel while it was still in translation and I fell in love with it. I read it so many times even after watching The Untamed. Warning, you will be addict to it and the novel is not censored..and the drama is different ,at some point, from the novel…but worth to be Read. A masterpiece đ
