The day after Zhou Kai received his acceptance letter from his first-choice university, his father brought his grandparents over from their hometown and invited relatives and friends for a celebratory feast.

There were so many people coming to offer their congratulations that Zhou Kai’s dining table couldn’t accommodate everyone. Zhou Kai’s mother set up another table in the living room for the younger kids, while the adults squeezed into the main dining room.

Zhou Kai heard so many compliments that his face turned red from drinking a few small cups of beer, and his feet felt light. Yet, a sense of melancholy and longing filled his heart.

He missed He Ye. The more surrounded he was by his family and the more love he received, the more he longed for He Ye. He imagined He Ye, alone and struggling, without the care and protection of his parents.

The feast seemed to go on forever, and even after the meal, everyone moved to the living room for tea and conversation. After eating, Zhou Kai left the table and sat with his younger cousins for a while. When he realized that the adults were no longer paying attention to him, he returned to his bedroom.

His acceptance letter was sitting on his desk. Zhou Kai leaned against the door and looked at it for a while before putting it away in a drawer.

He returned to his bed, knelt down, and checked on his pet snake, Xiao Heizi. He picked up the snake and wrapped it around his hand, then sat on the floor and stared at the photo on his bedside table, already tasting the bitterness of parting.

He would be parting from his parents, his grandparents, and… He Ye.

Zhou Kai sighed, lifted his hand, and kissed Xiao Heizi’s head, murmuring, “It’s going to be so far away…”

Xiao Heizi, oblivious to its owner’s mood, raised its head and flicked its tongue, its scales glistening in the light.

Zhou Kai stroked the snake and was about to stand up when his phone slipped out of his pocket. The notification light was blinking.

Zhou Kai glanced at his phone, thinking it was probably his class representative again. He had been chatting with his class representative before dinner, and the other had been going on and on about how he hadn’t received his acceptance letter yet and was worried about failing. Zhou Kai, already feeling down, had been even more disheartened by his classmate’s chatter and had quickly ended the conversation.

Putting Xiao Heizi back in its box, Zhou Kai picked up his phone and opened the message. It was from his WeChat backup account, and he immediately stood up, feeling excited, happy, and regretful.

After reading He Ye’s message, Zhou Kai was even more annoyed with himself for not checking his phone earlier.

He quickly typed a few “coming” messages on his screen and put his phone back in his pocket with a smile. He turned to leave the room but stopped at the door. After a moment’s thought, he turned around and went back to get his backpack. He checked on Xiao Heizi and its food, then took the framed photo from his bedside table and removed the note behind it. After packing everything into his backpack, Zhou Kai left his bedroom.

His parents were still entertaining guests, so he told his grandparents goodbye and left the house with a light step.

He Ye had already taken a shower and was wearing a pair of loose shorts when he saw Zhou Kai’s message. He went downstairs to the front door to wait for him.

Zhou Kai arrived in no time. He turned the corner into the alley and saw He Ye, shirtless with his hands in his pockets, looking up at him with a defiant, wild expression. Zhou Kai’s mind went blank, and he blurted out, “Damn,” as he rode his bike right up to He Ye.

He Ye put his hand on the handlebars, stopping the bike. He looked at Zhou Kai, who was staring at him and swallowing nervously, and cocked an eyebrow as he glanced at the bag on Zhou Kai’s back. “You brought pajamas? Planning to stay over?”

Zhou Kai turned to look at the backpack behind him, glanced at He Ye, and snorted. “I’d love to, but I’m afraid you won’t keep me.”

He Ye smiled and nodded. He was really not sure about that. Not to mention that his place wasn’t exactly safe, it would be hard to explain to Zhou Kai’s parents later.

Zhou Kai parked his bike and locked it up. He jumped over to He Ye, his eyes scanning He Ye from head to toe. He licked his lips and asked softly, “Why aren’t you working at the chicken shop today?”

He Ye’s gaze burned into his face, his voice already growing hoarse. He lowered his voice and said with a lewd smile, “I took the day off specially. I want to ‘cool off’ with you.”

As he said that, he reached out to take Zhou Kai’s hand. Zhou Kai followed him into the house and kicked him playfully. “I believe you, you little snake. What’s the real reason you’re not going?”

He Ye shut and locked the front door, then turned around and embraced Zhou Kai, kissing him deeply. Zhou Kai moaned and He Ye pulled away, staring into his beautiful eyes. “The shop owner has something going on, so they won’t be opening for the next two days,” he said, his hand wandering down to Zhou Kai’s buttocks, squeezing one cheek playfully and then rubbing it. Zhou Kai leaned into him, a muffled laugh escaping his lips. “Did you shower? If not, I’ll help you.”

Zhou Kai panted, blushing. He twisted his hips and bumped against He Ye’s hardening groin, his lips brushing against He Ye’s chin. “I did, can’t you smell it?” he murmured. He was referring to the scent of his shower gel, but He Ye deliberately misinterpreted, pushing him against the wall. “I can smell it,” he said, his voice husky. “It’s arousing. It’s making my cock hard. I can’t wait to put it inside you.”

Zhou Kai looked down at He Ye’s bulging pants and bit his lip. He licked his lips and then pulled He Ye’s hand to his chest, panting, “Wait a minute.” He Ye’s fingers, now wet with Zhou Kai’s saliva, reached through his shirt and squeezed his right nipple. Zhou Kai flinched and grabbed He Ye’s hand, explaining, “I brought Xiao Hei over. It’s in my bag. Let me get it out first.”

He Ye was startled. He felt the strap of the backpack on Zhou Kai’s shoulder. “You brought it over?”

“Yeah,” Zhou Kai replied, taking the bag off and holding it. He pushed He Ye and said excitedly, “Let’s go upstairs. I’ll show you my other ‘self’.”

Upstairs, Zhou Kai took Xiao Hei and its food out of the bag. He Ye noticed other things in the bag, but his attention was drawn to the small black snake in the box.

Xiao Hei, seen as Zhou Kai’s other self, was finally meeting its counterpart.

He Ye looked at the tiny black snake, no thicker than his finger, and then looked up at Zhou Kai, who was smiling and raising an eyebrow. He felt a strange mix of emotions. He opened the lid of the box and touched the cold snake, asking Zhou Kai, “How long have you had it?”

Zhou Kai touched the snake with him and replied, “Three years. It’s always been this size. It’s a pet snake, it won’t grow any bigger.”

He Ye was surprised by how long Zhou Kai had had the snake.

He Ye stroked Xiao Hei and replaced the lid. He pulled Zhou Kai into his arms, running his hands along Zhou Kai’s back and ruffling his hair. He opened his mouth to say something but stopped.

Zhou Kai looked up at him, feeling the warmth radiating from He Ye. Seeing He Ye staring at him softly, Zhou Kai’s face flushed. He buried his face in He Ye’s shoulder and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”

He Ye shook his head. “Nothing… I just don’t know how to take care of you.”

Zhou Kai guessed what He Ye was thinking. He chuckled, ran his hand lightly over He Ye’s waist, and sighed, “By the time you figure it out, time will have passed.”

His hand slid down, touching He Ye’s still-hard member, causing He Ye’s body to tense up. Zhou Kai lifted his head and kissed He Ye, his eyes sparkling. “Do you want to or not? Just say something. Why think so much? It’s all in the past anyway.”

He Ye grunted, staring at Zhou Kai. He tightened his grip around Zhou Kai’s waist and slipped his hand into his pants, rubbing it against Zhou Kai’s butt, asking in a hoarse voice, “What time do you need to go back?”

Zhou Kai stroked He Ye’s member, pulling his pants down and grinding against him, moaning softly, “Before eleven… I got a notice today. My dad is having a family dinner.”

Feeling He Ye’s sensitive head against him, He Ye gasped and scooped Zhou Kai up, bouncing him slightly. He laughed, “You’re a little light. Eat more.”

Zhou Kai wrapped his arms around He Ye’s neck and kicked off his shoes. As He Ye put him on the bed, he took off his shirt and said, “Nonsense, I’ve gained ten pounds in the past month. If I eat any more, I’ll be a pig.”

He Ye laughed and tossed his shirt to the end of the bed. He ran his hands over Zhou Kai’s waist and chest, kissed him, and pressed his body against Zhou Kai’s. He rubbed Zhou Kai’s right breast and smiled, his lips against Zhou Kai’s. “Even if you’re a hundred and forty-pound ‘pig’, I can still carry you.”

It was supposed to be a sweet thing to say, but it sounded so strange and awkward.

Zhou Kai wanted to retort, but He Ye kissed him deeply, silencing him. He tried to kick He Ye but He Ye caught his knee and bent it, opening his legs and thrusting against him through his thin pants.

He was completely dominated and couldn’t fight back.

In the end, He Ye and Zhou Kai didn’t have full intercourse. Zhou Kai wanted to, but He Ye was being rational, saying that it wouldn’t look good if Zhou Kai went home with marks all over him. Besides, Zhou Kai had to go to work at the department store tomorrow and sit all day, which would be tiring.

Zhou Kai listened to He Ye list all the reasons not to do it, and he was angry. He was completely naked under He Ye, with He Ye’s member pressed against his anus, and He Ye was saying they couldn’t do it. It was infuriatingly rational.

But what could he do? He Ye had a point.

So they didn’t have intercourse, but they discovered something new.

Lying on the bed, Zhou Kai stared at He Ye, who was panting and smiling above him. His face was flushed, and he turned his head away in embarrassment. He twisted his hips, and the sensation in his anus made him blush even harder. He raised his hand to cover his eyes.

He Ye took his hand away and kissed his lips, which still tasted of his cum. He stared at Zhou Kai and asked, “Does it feel good? Are you comfortable?”

Zhou Kai rubbed his hand against He Ye’s sweaty chest and murmured, “You don’t mind…” He licked it, and with such enthusiasm.

He Ye got off him and lay beside him, wrapping his arm around Zhou Kai. He exhaled, “Mind what? I just want to take care of you, and I’ll make it up to you later.” Remembering what he had searched online, He Ye grinned and whispered in Zhou Kai’s ear, “When we have time, I’ll definitely fuck you good. Then you won’t say I’m not good enough anymore.”

Zhou Kai’s ears turned bright red from He Ye’s hot breath. He turned his head to stare at He Ye, with a “what a scoundrel” expression, but his eyes revealed a genuine expectation.

He Ye raised an eyebrow and smiled, pulling him back and kissing him endlessly.

“I’m starting school at the end of August,” Zhou Kai said.

“Yeah, that means one more month,” He Ye replied.

“… Can you act a little sad?”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sad.”

“…”

“Can I keep Xiao Hei? You’re not taking it with you, right?”

“Ah, you can keep it. I don’t want it anymore.”

“Tsk, what do you mean you don’t want it anymore?”

“Literally… Ow!”

He Ye soothed the red nipple in his mouth. Zhou Kai looked down at it, then glanced at He Ye and snorted, “I’m going back.” But his hands and feet were wrapped tightly around He Ye, refusing to let go.

He Ye hummed in agreement, his fingers tracing the tattoo on Zhou Kai’s body, lost in thought.

Zhou Kai closed his eyes and let He Ye touch him. After a few comfortable breaths, he said, “I won’t come back for National Day or New Year’s Day. I’ll come back during winter break.”

He Ye pulled him closer and said softly, “Okay, I got it.”

Zhou Kai hesitated and said softly, “Will you come to see me off? On the day I leave.”

He Ye said, “I will.”

Zhou Kai hesitated and softened his voice, “If you’re busy with work…”

He Ye interrupted him, “I will. I’ll see you off. And when you come back for winter break, I’ll pick you up.”

Zhou Kai smiled and raised his head to block He Ye’s mouth with his own.

On the day he left, Zhou Kai didn’t tell He Ye. He waited until he was about to board the plane and then sent He Ye a text:

I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you’d miss me so much before I even left. I’m gone now, you stinky snake. Remember to pick me up when I come back.

He Ye was delivering drinks when he received the message.

His tricycle was parked by the roadside for a long time. People passing by on electric bikes and bicycles saw the driver staring at his phone with a lost expression. After passing by several times, they became curious and wondered what was wrong with him.

He Ye was fine, he just suddenly felt that four months, over a hundred days, was too long. He had always hoped that time would slow down so he could earn more money. Now, he didn’t know if he wanted time to slow down or speed up.

Zhou Kai had expressed sadness about their separation after the college entrance exam, and He Ye had comforted him, saying that they could stay connected online. But the internet was just the internet. He could see Zhou Kai through his phone, but he couldn’t touch him.

Those days would be even harder than before Zhou Kai entered his life.
