Lyss was momentarily stunned by the words, quickly realizing Lu Xingye’s true intentions.
“Do you really want to see?” Lyss didn’t refuse, but didn’t immediately agree either. “You should have more important matters to ask me.”
Lu Xingye raised an eyebrow. “Is the Chief changing his mind?”
Lyss and Lu Xingye locked eyes for three seconds. Seeing the determination in each other’s gaze, Lyss didn’t say anything more. He lowered his head to undo his belt.
“Wait—” Lu Xingye was startled. He never expected Lyss to be so straightforward. For a moment, he was tongue-tied. “I just want to see your tattoo.”
Lyss paused his actions, pondered for three seconds, and spared his poor belt. Lu Xingye relaxed when suddenly, Lyss pulled open his collar, exposing half of his shoulder and a large expanse of skin to the air.
Lu Xingye’s breath hitched, unsure where to focus his eyes. The recent shower made Lyss look softer, a bit less intimidating. Having led a life of privilege, his fair skin was smooth and lustrous, several levels whiter than the rougher Alpha types like Lu Xingye, who had struggled in the interstellar environment. But amidst that glistening fairness lay a sudden streak of gold, giving that seemingly pristine white a hint of allurement.
Lu Xingye gritted his teeth, trying to make himself look less embarrassed, but involuntarily his tail began wagging and his slightly trembling ears gave away his inner turmoil.
Seeing him silent for a while, Lyss asked considerately, “Can’t see clearly?”
To provide a better view, he took a step forward.
The already limited space between them instantly shrunk to a breath-catching distance. Lu Xingye widened his eyes, his previously twitching ears going still. He blushed and took two steps back, almost colliding with the sofa in his fluster.
“No need to get so close,” Lu Xingye, red-faced and almost mortified, nearly biting his tongue, said, “I can see clearly.”
Observing this strange reaction, Lyss didn’t press further, just stood there boredly wagging his tail. That white tail swept over the young man’s heart like a feather. Damn, Lu Xingye cursed inwardly; did this guy have White Fox lineage?
Regardless of how chaotic his thoughts were, Lu Xingye tried to compose himself, focused on looking and found the tattoo—”A-000.”
“This code…” Lu Xingye was instantly captivated by the tattoo. “Does it have any specific meaning?”
Lyss looked up at him. “Your request was only to view it, not to understand its origin.”
Lu Xingye suddenly regained his senses, sighed, and said, “Chief, we’ve developed some rapport, can’t you show a bit of leniency?”
Lyss was unyielding. “No.”
Lu Xingye had thought that viewing the code would provide a deeper understanding of Lyss’s origins, but after seeing it, he felt utterly clueless. Instead of gaining insights, he felt like he’d lost something, and in frustration, he couldn’t help but ask, “If that Cheno had something you wanted, would you be willing to negotiate with him in the same manner?”
Puzzled, Lyss asked, “What does he have to do with it?”
“How is it unrelated?” Lu Xingye persisted. “He insulted you behind your back, and you’re not angry.”
“For a buzzing bug in my ear, I’d squash it,” Lyss didn’t understand why Lu Xingye was so worked up. “Why be angry?”
Lu Xingye initially wanted to indignantly say something, but after hearing this, he was at a loss for words.
“Have you finished looking?” Lyss, noticing Lu Xingye’s stunned silence, pointed to his collarbone. “Once you’re done, I’ll put my clothes back on.”
“Oh, I’m done,” Lu Xingye quickly responded. “What did you mean just now?”
“Today’s affairs aren’t my concern. The matter from before involving Cheno has been suppressed by the military. With the change in their leadership approaching, it’s time for them to give me a satisfactory answer.” Lyss pulled up his collar. “Secretary Lu, it’s late; give me the recording. It’s time for you to cook.”
Lyss made a rare joke, but Lu Xingye only heard the second sentence, “What did Cheno do before?”
After a moment’s thought, Lyss replied, “He directly proposed marking me. After I refused, he conveyed similar words through the council. I declined again. The military’s stance on this has been ambiguous. They might also want to control me through their alpha, but they haven’t had the chance.”
Lu Xingye was stunned, and after locking eyes with Lyss for three seconds, he suddenly turned and walked toward the kitchen.
Perplexed, Lyss guessed that Lu Xingye had probably got the answer he wanted and was going to cook. So he didn’t think much of it, went back to his room, tidied his tail, changed into pajamas, took the recording, and sat in the living room. But halfway through, he heard continuous and loud noises coming from the kitchen.
Lyss’s ears twitched, and he abruptly stood up from the sofa, listening alertly for a moment, realizing that it sounded like the continuous chopping of a knife on a cutting board.
Wolves loved food, but generally lacked culinary skills. Therefore, Lyss couldn’t help but feel curious—what was Lu Xingye doing?
Holding the just-started recording, Lyss walked to the kitchen.
Lu Xingye had already heard the movement behind him, but he was silently sulking, or rather, feeling jealous. So he pretended not to notice until Lyss approached him from behind. He remained silent until Lyss was right behind him, chopping the board fiercely.
“What are you doing?” Lyss stood behind him, curious.
“Dumplings,” Lu Xingye answered briefly, still not turning his head.
“I think I’ve heard of that; it’s Serican cuisine, right?” Lyss was a bit shorter than Lu Xingye. Unable to see properly from behind, he stepped forward, standing to Lu Xingye’s left, and asked, “But I heard dumplings should be made with dough? Why are you chopping meat?”
Lu Xingye pretended to be tough. “The filling inside is meat.”
Seeing this, Lyss didn’t ask further, stood aside watching Lu Xingye cook while continuing the playback of the recording.
This segment of the recording held much higher value than the previous one. Cheno and Nicky were discussing Lyss’ situation a few days before the upcoming visit of the Sheng Dan Alliance to Triss, where Triss was a habitat for a small, mixed interstellar community primarily composed of regular humans and Leopard Therians. Due to previous conflicts with the Empire and cultural disputes with Serica, Triss had been struggling.
In a bid for development, Sheng Dan had been trying to improve its trade relations with Triss over the last few years to better their interstellar situation. According to the plan, in three days, representatives from Sheng Dan would be visiting Triss.
In the recording, the two were discussing how some high-ranking officials from Sheng Dan, seeking more benefits, had bypassed the council and privately contacted Triss’ military. They intended to exchange some resources with the military for more information, hoping to gain an advantage in negotiations. But being a small alliance, Sheng Dan’s resources were limited, and dealings with the military were not smooth. Hence, they seemed to imply a postponement of the visit.
The recording abruptly stopped there, and Lyss paused, looking down in contemplation.
Lu Xingye, although sulking inside, felt the person beside him was too close. That white wolf’s tail even brushed against Lu Xingye’s waist, and he couldn’t help but glance at Lyss.
Coincidentally, the video paused at the moment when Cheno was speaking. Even when discussing other matters, that scumbag never failed to mention Lyss.
Lu Xingye’s breath hitched; once again, he felt jealousy rising within. His tail stopped wagging, ears unmoving as he viciously chopped the meat, putting extra force into it, almost as if Cheno were under his knife.
Lyss, sensing something amiss, asked, “Do you have a problem with Cheno?”
Lu Xingye wanted to clench his teeth but maintained a nonchalant facade. “No.”
He put the minced meat and ingredients into a bowl, washed his hands, and prepared the seasoning.
Deep in thought, Lyss commented, “If you don’t like him, I’ll take care of him quickly.”
Lu Xingye’s breath hitched, turning to Lyss, “Do you treat everyone like this?”
Lyss paused, “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” Lu Xingye started to explain but suddenly felt a rush in his head. He grabbed the white wolf tail draped beside him. For Therian species like wolves, the tail could be considered a third sexual characteristic, especially for omegas. Being grabbed by the tail was akin to being temporarily marked.
A sensation he’d never experienced before surged from the tip of his tail to his chest—a tingling sensation that left Lyss breathless. Instinctively, he wanted to swat Lu Xingye’s hand away, but just before acting, he suddenly stopped, and the two stood there frozen.
“I touched your tail, and you didn’t react much,” Lu Xingye, seemingly anticipating this, sighed, “Chief, you always make people misunderstand.”
Lyss frowned, “I don’t understand what you mean.”
Lu Xingye didn’t give a direct answer, just looked at him, “If I wasn’t here, if another alpha temporarily marked you and touched your tail, what would you do?”
