Chapter 3: Wolfhound

Lu Xingye was facing a dilemmaânod and imply he was a weakling who could barely withstand a few hits, or shake his head, which would demand an explanation for why he got up in such a hurry. Afterwards, he would be seen as a flustered kid unable to handle an omega’s touch. Neither seemed right, leaving Lu Xingye silent, attempting to feign depth and refuse to answer the question. He clearly failed.
“Vayne,” as Lu Xingye remained silent, Lyss addressed the micro-terminal on his wrist, “Bring the medical device.”
…Damn it. Today was humiliating. Lu Xingye quietly gritted his teeth in his mind.
Upon receiving the command, Vayne swiftly brought the medical device from the sidelines, followed by a crowd of onlookers. Vayne and the others looked at Lu Xingye with mockery and satisfaction, which bewildered Lu Xingye. Yes, he had lost to Lyss, but why were these alphas so pleased?
Lyss seemed unaware of the undercurrents among the alphas present. He took the medical device and handed it to Lu Xingye, gesturing for him to treat himself.
While Lu Xingye received treatment, Lyss turned to Wu Jiu, asking, “What procedures are needed to take him away?”
Wu Jiu hastily replied, “Nothing is required, as long as Mr. Lu is willing.”
Starfall Sea had no laws; the only rule was “might makes right.” Although the wolf clan cherished stability, as the White Wolf King, Lyss neither confirmed nor denied Wu Jiu’s statement. Instead, he turned to the almost-healed Lu Xingye and asked, “Do you have anything to take with you?”
Lu Xingye shook his head. “Nothing.”
From this response, Lyss discerned something unusual. “In an hour, we’ll depart from here. If you have too much to carry, Vayne can help you.”
A simple statement, not particularly thoughtful, but it stirred something within Lu Xingye. For eighteen years, besides his missing mother, no one had ever waited for him in such a manner.
“Aren’t you afraid I’ll take the chance to run?” Lu Xingye blurted out, but immediately realized how foolish it sounded.
Lyss, with his emotionless golden eyes, gazed at Lu Xingye. After a moment of calm, he replied, “You can try.”
The feeling of being scrutinized by this supernatural being made Lu Xingye’s scalp tingle, yet he couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement from deep withinâchallenging the unknown, conquering a strong opponentâinstincts ingrained in Lu Xingye’s bones. However, he quickly suppressed his excitement and addressed Lyss, “I was just joking earlier. There’s no need to trouble your people. Levine, Brian, come with me.”
Without waiting for Lyss’ response, Lu Xingye turned and left. Although rabbits and foxes were natural enemies, upon hearing Lu Xingye’s words, they limped after him.
Lu Xingye’s two relatively good teammates showed no surprise at his sudden decision to leave Starfall Sea. Apparently, in their eyes, Lu Xingye had come to Starfall Sea with his own purpose. Once that goal was achieved, as someone without any ties, he would eventually leave.
Lyss witnessed this scene, wearing an unusually contemplative expression.
During the hour Lu Xingye took to pack, Wu Jiu tactfully found an excuse to leave for a while. With the “outsiders” gone, Vayne couldn’t resist asking, “Lord Silverfang, what do you see in that wolf cub? His coat might be pure, but there’s a clear difference in appearance from the imperial waste. I wonder which waste mixed with other racesâhe probably doesn’t even have basic reproductive ability. If you want an alpha, at least choose one from our own…”
After a long string of words, the last sentence finally got to the point.
Lyss glanced at him without a word, and Vayne coughed, feeling somewhat guilty, and averted his gaze.
“I don’t need an alpha to mark me,” Lyss spoke with certainty, “I only need a stabilizer pheromone sufficient to protect myself. As for this person’s race or reproductive ability, it’s irrelevant to me.”
Hearing Lyss’ first sentence, the faces of the others present turned pale. Since the White Wolf clan’s expulsion, there had never been an Omega Wolf KingâLyss Silverfang was the first and only one. The council didn’t know how to restrict this new king’s power. Despite adopting a completely different parliamentary system from the Black Wolf clan to maintain a clear boundary after their expulsion, the wolf nature remained submissive to the Wolf King. Every new king was extremely important to the entire wolf clan.
Therefore, between nature and reason, for the clan’s benefit, the council had to ensure the new Wolf King’s absolute loyalty and responsibility to the White Wolf clan.
The reason the council was so nervous and feared that Lyss would betray the White Wolf clan was that, despite being impeccable in many aspects, Lyss had a congenital defect in pheromonesâhe couldn’t smell alpha pheromones, nor did he have a stable mating period. And most importantlyâsuppressants had no effect on Lyss.
Ordinary alphas could hardly smell Lyss’ pheromones, but under certain conditions, they could be influenced by him, even losing their senses under terrifying circumstances.
The last traceable estrus for Lyss was ten years ago. It was impossible to determine when his next mating period would occur with medical assessmentsâit could be tomorrow, or it might never come. For other omegas, exposure to alpha pheromones triggered their mating periods, dominating their emotions and rationality. But this was not the case for Lyss. Even military doctors had experimented, injecting liquid alpha pheromones directly into his bloodstream. His emotional fluctuations were almost nonexistent.
Instead of being controlled by alpha pheromones, the pheromones injected into Lyss’ body were quickly consumed, followed by physical examinations showing a certain degree of improvement in all his physiological indicators.
For Lyss, alpha pheromones seemed more like a supplement.
The council fell silent upon receiving this news.
Lyss was unique; his glands developed well but released almost no pheromones. This wasn’t a traditional “defect” or “gland deformity.” On the contrary, he seemed to have evolved ahead of other omegas, surpassing any alpha and maximizing their use, fitting the century-old speculation of the “ultimate evolution.”
Yet, he was still an omega, still potentially in heat. No one had seen Lyss’ heat period. Based on the usual circumstances, an omega in heat might resort to any means to get a mark. This was still extremely dangerous for the Triss Federation.
The only solution the doctors offered was to soothe with alpha pheromones as much as possible. A lifelong mark could fundamentally solve the problem. But evidently, nobody in the entire White Wolf clan dared to speak up, not even the council, who only proposed indirect solutions.
This was why each time Lyss went out, he was surrounded by several White Wolf alphas âostensibly to protect him by following the medical advice, and attempting to calm Lyss with enough alpha pheromones. In reality, they were back-up in case Lyss’ estrus suddenly erupted. In other words, these alphas were all options in a desperate situation.
It was a dark and incredibly dirty reason beneath the lofty pretense and calculation. Lyss had never expressed any opinion on this matter. Since his inauguration less than half a year ago, the number of guards had silently decreased from twenty to five. Of the fifteen who disappeared, half had no trace.
Now, Lyss was openly taking an alpha from another race back with him, and yet his five guards couldn’t voice opposition. In the face of true strength and power, gender and scheming were negligible.
An hour later, Lu Xingye appeared at the agreed-upon location. He didn’t seem to have brought much, but the rabbit and fox behind him looked reluctant to part. As they bid Lu Xingye farewell, Levine was on the verge of tears, “Brother Lu, you once taught me, ‘If you become rich, don’t forget your friends,’ although your wealth this time isn’t honorable… but when you have money, don’t forget your brothers!”
Lu Xingye couldn’t take it anymore, retorting, “I’m not going to sell myself!”
But his words seemed ineffective. Levine’s eyes conveyed what he had just said on the way: Stop acting, bro. Serve the beautiful person well. As long as he’s not cutting you open, you’re making a profit.
Lu Xingye clearly didn’t want to engage in more banter with this chatterbox rabbit and boarded the starship with his luggage.
Once aboard, Lyss, seemingly lost in thought, remarked to Lu Xingye, “Your friend seems to have some misunderstandings.”
Lu Xingye, boarding this level of starship for the first time, was silently likening himself to a bumpkin entering the city. He was taken aback by Lyss’ words and replied, “That rabbit is missing a few screws. But his misunderstanding probably stems from Mr. Silverfang’s previous words.”
Lyss appeared puzzled, somewhat confused as he asked, “Previous words…? Which ones do you mean?”
Lu Xingye regretted his words as soon as he spoke them, but upon hearing Lyss’ confusion, he was momentarily as bewildered as Lyss, “Of course, the one where you needed an alpha. Your words made it seem like you needed an alpha to solve your physiological problem.”
Based on Lyss’ ability to determine his race, Lu Xingye was convinced that this man’s insistence on taking him away was absolutely related to the mystery of his crossbreed and certain matters concerning the Black Wolf clan. Thus, he never thought in the direction of an AO.
Unexpectedly, after hearing this, Lyss replied frankly, “I indeed need an alpha to solve my physiological problem.”
Author’s Note:
