The Empire’s unexpected move sent shockwaves throughout the interstellar community. Heads of multiple nations received the information simultaneously, causing desks to be pounded in frustration, disturbing the seemingly calm surface of the universe.
The aftermath of the recent explosion had only just settled. The Empire’s vague explanation and symbolic punishment of a few individuals had already failed to appease many. Suddenly announcing such a development would undoubtedly cause a storm.
Lillia, observing Lyss’s chilling demeanor, cautiously spoke up, “Chief, what do we do now?”
In times like these, the first contact should undoubtedly be with the Empire’s diplomats.
“Summon Lu Xingye,” Lyss returned to his seat and reopened the terminal, without lifting his head. “Immediately.”
Lillia nodded hurriedly. “Understood.”
As she left, Lyss stared fixedly at the information on the terminal. Though it hadn’t been long since the Empire’s message, several smaller nations, unable to contain their reactions, had already condemned it. Lyss swiftly managed these messages, yet his mind focused on something else entirely.
With his estrus approaching, it had been at least five days since he’d had any contact with Lu Xingye. Lyss could clearly pinpoint the timing of his estrus from the code, down to the second. He knew well the potential consequences of Lu Xingye’s arrival, but he had no choice.
This wasn’t the time to consider such matters. The Empire’s consulate was quite a distance from headquarters. After swiftly going through all the news, Lyss decisively called in several officials from Triss’ Foreign Affairs Department.
“Regarding this matter, do not provide any responses to external inquiries,” Lyss stated seriously. “Wait until we understand their intentions before making any statements.”
The group earnestly acknowledged his instructions. Lyss gave a few more orders, preparing to hear their individual opinions when a familiar knock came from outside. Lyss paused mid-sentence and changed his tone, “Let’s stop here for now. Thank you all for your hard work these past few days.”
He was usually a man of few words. The officials from the Foreign Affairs Department didn’t immediately realize anything amiss. They exchanged pleasantries and began to leave.
As they opened the office door, a gust of wind and snow mixed with an unfamiliar scent hit them. All of them froze in place. A cold alpha dressed in a black and gold cloak uttered, “Excuse me.”
His presence was commanding. The individuals instinctively stepped aside, and Lu Xingye walked into the office. The moment the door closed, those outside saw the alpha walk straight to the Chief’s desk and say something quietly into Lyss’s ear.
It was too close. From their angle, it almost looked like they were kissing. Witnessing this unprecedented disrespect toward the Chief, the onlookers were dumbfounded. Before they could analyze further, the office door shut.
The scent of tea mingled with the snow enveloped Lyss. He gently caught the visitor’s collar. “Why the rush?”
Lu Xingye was about to discuss the Empire’s matter but paused upon hearing Lyss’s words. He chuckled, “You called, how could I delay?”
Lyss’s expression softened as he adjusted the collar. “Did you receive the message?”
“I did, but it was my people who sent it to me. The royal family might have sensed my unrest, but there’s been no immediate action.” Lu Xingye casually sat on the desk behind Lyss, toying with Lyss’s hand. “From the hasty nature of the last attack, I guessed they were anxious, but I didn’t expect them to be this impatient… not even waiting for the regime change, openly challenging the current prime minister.”
Lyss caressed Lu Xingye’s fingertips. “What do you plan to do?”
Lu Xingye caught his implications and smiled. “Such a lively drama; of course, I must go back and witness it myself.”
Lyss couldn’t help but tighten his grip on Lu Xingye’s fingers. He didn’t want to appear as if he were using Lu Xingye; it wasn’t his intention. Yet, the best option now was to let Lu Xingye return on his own. Lu Xingye could see through his thoughts and intentionally chuckled. “Everything’s arranged. I’ll leave the day after tomorrow. Why, Chief, are you reluctant to let me go?”
Lu Xingye paused, pondered for a while, and finally caught Lyss’s displeasure. He couldn’t help but laugh, his smile as radiant as the morning sun. “Why does the Chief only allow the ox to graze but not to work? Tomorrow is my wife’s estrus. If I leave, he’ll remember it for half a lifetime.”
Lyss blinked, “Tomorrow?”
“Yes, not only do I want to go back, but the Prime Minister also can’t wait and is asking for my return.” Lu Xingye knelt between Lyss’s legs, adjusting his knee, “I’ve only been here for less than half a month, and her people have already been detained by the royal family. If I don’t return, the Empire might truly undergo a change.”
Lyss bit his lip, feeling a bit upset for some reason. He blinked at Lu Xingye, “If just for a day?”
He didn’t explicitly state it, but Lu Xingye understood. In this situation, Lu Xingye’s words were quite cheeky. Lyss paused, then reached up and gently grabbed the alpha’s neck, softly speaking into his ear, “I’ll be waiting.”
“Do you want to bet?”
Caught off guard, Lyss’s proximity to the alpha’s marked pheromones caused his estrus to kick in uncontrollably on the spot. He breathlessly asked, “A bet… what bet?”
“Just bet on whether…” Lu Xingye whispered in his ear, “I can end your estrus within a day.”
Besides external intervention, an omega’s estrus was nearly impossible to stop. If it suddenly ended without any signs, there was only one possibility—pregnancy. Hormones during pregnancy would adjust the omega’s pheromone levels, thereby suppressing the estrus. In the current situation, Lu Xingye’s words were undoubtedly audacious.
Lyss hesitated, then raised his hand to grip the alpha’s neck and whispered softly in his ear, “I’ll bet.”
Caught off guard, Lyss only had time to send a message to Lillia, asking her to look after Lin Lang. Apart from that, he forgot to cancel his leave with the Council.
Triss’s Chief’s solemn office became a mess in less than half a day. The dark-screened terminals were thrown carelessly aside, papers scattered on the floor, and his pale, well-defined fingers pressed weakly onto the dark-brown desk. His sweat dripped down his hand.
Subtle sobs echoed in the office, until a large hand reached from behind, enveloping the other’s hand and pulling it backward. A helpless golden gaze teared up, tears streaming down.
The soundproofing at headquarters was quite effective; no one passing by the Chief’s office sensed anything amiss. Until dinner time, when people just finished work, they started streaming into the dining hall. As they casually glanced up, they saw an Imperial diplomat entering the dining hall with only a white shirt on the upper half.
Many stopped in their tracks, surprised by the sight and the recent announcement from the Empire. Lu Xingye walked into the dining hall, queued up to order with an air of nonchalance, seemingly oblivious to the attention. The shirt he wore had some subtle wrinkles, and only those closest to him noticed.
After quickly placing his order, Lu Xingye calmly carried his food and started walking, seemingly heading in an unexpected direction. Everyone looked at him with incredulity. The office door made a slight noise, and Lyss, catching his breath, opened his eyes to look.
“…You went to the dining hall dressed like this?” Lyss tugged at his collar.
Lu Xingye set down his utensils and pulled Lyss into his arms. Lowering his gaze to his clothes, he replied, “Yeah, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Lyss leaned back lazily against him. “I’m hungry; let’s continue.”
Lu Xingye keenly caught the double entendre in Lyss’s words, chuckled lightly, and said, “Roger that.”
Even during estrus, Lyss still possessed the ability to overpower a grown alpha, but at that moment, he couldn’t even be bothered to feed himself. Half-lidded, he leaned against the alpha, enjoying his attentiveness.
The headquarters’ dining hall gathered the finest chefs in all of Triss, producing dishes that were among the Federation’s finest. Lyss barely ate, unwilling to consume much. Even after some coaxing from Lu Xingye, he managed only a few bites. As he finished the last mouthful, Lyss placed a hand on Lu Xingye’s shoulder and unceremoniously sat on his lap, catching the alpha by surprise with a kiss before he could take a bite of his meal.
The Chief’s office naturally boasted the best panoramic view in headquarters, with enormous floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the breathtaking night view of the capital planet. Standing by the window carried its own unique sensation.
Lyss had never felt the night to be so enduringly long. He couldn’t help but nudge the person behind him, urging him to finish his meal. The response was a light chuckle, “It’s okay, I’ll be full just eating peaches.”
Subtle sighs drowned in the night. Early the next morning, as Lu Xingye woke up, intending to “continue his work,” he noticed the scent of peaches in the room had become subdued and pleasantly sweet. He was momentarily perplexed before realization struck—he understood that Lyss’s estrus period had ended.
Author’s note:
The second child is here, a girl this time. She’s likely an alpha baby, resembling the Chief—a cool, black-haired girl. She’s gentle to her older sister and mom but often sports a poker face around her biological father because he tends to tease her a lot.

The author gives a lot away!
Thank you both for the chapter.
