Chapter 14: The Hero Who Obeys Without Question

What did he mean— “Will you marry me?”
Just after tidying up from one chaotic event earlier that day, the Demon King sneered coldly amid the puzzled looks from the Hero and the village chief. His icy gaze swept over the Hero, dripping with lethal intent. Having witnessed the Demon King’s shift from indifferent to confused to angry, the Hero felt more bewildered than the completely clueless village chief standing beside him.
“What? What’s wrong?” the Hero asked, still not understanding how he had somehow wandered onto the path from being confessed to, to accepting, and now onto actively proposing — especially under their fated circumstances.
The Demon King scanned the surroundings for a weapon, but finding nothing suitable, he forced his dizzy mind to clear up. No, this was wrong. The chaos hadn’t started with the last sentence that had set him off.
It had begun all the way back at the words, “I accept.” From there, everything slipped far beyond his comprehension, running wild like some newly created magic unleashed without bounds. And at the end, it exploded against him like crashing into another spell—hard. The Demon King looked down at his hands and repeated the initial question: “What do you mean by ‘I accept’?”
The Hero thought carefully before answering timidly, “I accepted your confession…?”
Though the Demon King’s expression looked like he was ready to kill on the spot, the Hero figured that, given fate and the words “you like me,” that was probably reason enough to accept and be together, right?
Especially since Joshua seemed sad and dejected when he’d confessed. Under the Demon King’s returned cold, vengeful stare, the Hero answered uncertainly. The Demon King, frozen in confusion, was like: Confession? When reality hit, his reaction exploded into question marks: ???!!!
A confession to the Demon King? That was the ultimate insult to him. And it absolutely would never happen—ever!!! Calmly dismissing the idea, the Demon King grabbed a crudely made first-aid kit nearby and slammed it right in the Hero’s face. “Your confession? Only in your dreams!”
True to the demon way, he struck the face directly. After the hit, the Demon King was finally relieved to not have to see that annoying expression anymore. The Hero, reacting instinctively, stumbled backward with a clatter, crashing to the ground.
Bandages spilled from the poorly closed kit, scattering in arcs—some landing on the floor or the Hero, others draping over the Demon King’s eyes and half his face. The Demon King muttered, “….”
Looking at the mess covering his face and falling all around, he regretted not taking the chance to crush the Hero properly earlier. An existence like the Hero’s really should have been put down from the start.
…
In the end, the Hero managed to push the fiery, irritable Demon King back onto the bed.
“Rest well. Don’t get angry again, and don’t start messing with things,” the Hero said gently to the wounded, frustrated version of the Demon King. The Demon King snapped, “I—did—not—confess—to—you.”
No, no, no, no, no! Important things had to be said three, four, five, six, seven times! After clearing that up, the Demon King stressed his point repeatedly amid a series of unfolding events.
The Hero nodded in response, still calm and gentle as before. “I understand. From what you explained, you didn’t want to accept anyone’s confession while you were amnesiac, and you didn’t want to be misunderstood after the gift was seen. So you impulsively threw the flowers away, coincidentally hitting me, and then, feeling awkward after accidentally hitting me, you tried to calm down but were actually flustered, so you left.”
He spoke the polished version of the Demon King’s story as told during the clarification, adding softly, “Right?”
It wasn’t hesitation or anxiety over pride, nor was it storming off because of no answer—just that. The Demon King, faced with the Hero’s tolerant attitude, thought: So you forced me to expose all the truth myself before you’d believe me?
At the first explanation, the Hero’s gentle acceptance exhausted the Demon King. He still had to worry about his own demonic body’s safety.
Why did the Hero insist on interpreting a bizarre coincidence as a confession? he wondered helplessly. The Hero—now seen as a walking source of trouble—felt equally helpless:
How did things go from just going home and getting married to this mess?
Probably because of that one explosive word: “marry.”
Having learned that explosive point during the first clarification, the Hero sighed over his own slip of the tongue and, faced with the Demon King’s perpetual bad temper and his own accidental injury caused by the King’s clumsiness, wasn’t sure whether to worry about his own future or the Demon King’s.
Author’s note:
I added a bit more plot to the misunderstanding about the confession in the previous two chapters since the logic felt a little shaky before.
