John was surprised to learn the identities of the other trainees there with him: a young mortal-born demon; a man with witch blood; an elf (who looked like a middle school student but was really about forty years old, with short pointed ears hidden in her long hair, just like in the Lord of the Rings movies, though she claimed her bloodline was very thin); John who was a bloodkin; and a pure human.
It took John half a month to get used to these trainees. Their trainer was also a human. John was amazed at how brave these humans were–how they were not afraid to interact with dark creatures and supernatural species on a daily basis.
Of course, during the training, John learned the meaning of “dark creatures” and “supernatural species”.
Supernatural species: commonly referred to as all kinds of monsters, such as trolls, mermaids, centaurs, lizardmen, beast-headed people, and so on. They are mutated creatures of unknown origin and do not have any special attributes. All weapons will work against them as long as you’re strong enough, aim well enough, and use the right methods.
Dark creatures: this includes inhabitants of the otherworld, such as demons and whatnot, and also bloodkin like John. They have innate dark attributes. If a dark creature has died once, those like bloodkin and corpse demons will have both dark and necromantic attributes; those with demon or witch bloodlines, on the other hand, only have darkness attributes but not necromantic attributes.
It is difficult for ordinary weapons to harm dark creatures and necromancers. For example, regular steel-core bullets can’t hit a vampire in mist-form or a ghost that is floating around, let alone an Abyssal demon.
Exorcists like Liz are specialized in restraining spirits and dark forces, and they are good at using spells for exorcism, while hunters like Carolyn are good at striking and destroying, and are better at direct combat than casting spells. Exorcists and hunters often act in partnership.
John felt miserable. As a vampire, he had dual attributes of both the dark and the necromantic, and the power of light types and sacred types could all hurt him. He made up his mind to go to Coraci’s welfare department to do social work, mediate or whatever. He absolutely had to stay away from the violent and bloody departments.
At the end of the training, their internship began. John learned that the Association also recruited ordinary clerks, such as the elf girl who was going to the secretary’s office.
The man with the witch bloodline was a muscular man nearly seven feet tall, and his blood was a natural universal catalyst, capable of universal use and replacing over a thousand spellcasting materials. The man would be attending an in-depth exorcist training, and he intended to partner with a hunter, like Liz and Carolyn.
The demon of the mortal-born species and the pure human… During their training, they developed a “friendship” that transcended race, and John had once caught them in a bathroom stall having a heated “talk.” The two missed their classes because they were head over heels in love, and after a month they both failed the basic knowledge written exam and had to spend time to start over.
John passed the exam but could not be officially employed. He still needed to do a long internship. The Association provided him with a lot of convenient benefits, but he was afraid to call his family to tell them the truth… His parents were more traditional, so who knew if they could accept it.
“Mr. Deville Coraci is coming over this evening,” the instructor said the day after the basic knowledge written exam. “He’s told us about wanting to accept you as a partner, and you’ll both need to answer a few questions together.”
John nodded. At the moment, he was eating with the group. Of course, he didn’t have to eat… But he could have a drink.
“You can take out the blood bag,” the muscle-bound male witch said. “We don’t mind.”
“But I don’t think it’s a good idea…” John smiled. “Besides, we don’t need to eat three meals a day like humans do–just eating at regular intervals is enough.”
“So how are you supposed to ask a girl out?” the elf girl asked.
“I could have some wine.”
“Hey John, honestly,” she asked, looking intrigued, “you’ve never lost control? Like on a date with a girl and suddenly you can’t tell if it’s sexual desire or if it’s hunger…”
The instructor didn’t stop her, and in fact he was eager to hear the answer.
“A long time ago,” John was a little embarrassed, “I did have a hard time controlling my appetite. But fortunately, my parents were there to guide me, and they kept me well in check. Even when I’m starving, I don’t kill people. But it probably made them a little anemic…”
“Rumors are always scarier than the truth,” the muscular male witch nodded, “For example, our clan’s plague curse — if I don’t deliberately cast a spell but solely use bloodline intention, the most I can do is to make people get neurodermatitis. But everyone talks about us like we can kill from a far distance…”
As everyone chatted excitedly, John looked at his watch. The instructor had said Coraci would be here around 7:00 in the evening, and it was now exactly 7:00. Suddenly, the phone rang, and it was the girl at the front desk.
“Instructor Jere, something’s wrong! Please come to the surveillance room!” She said to the instructor who answered the phone.
The trainees looked at each other and ran after Instructor Jere. They did not go to the building’s surveillance room but to the separate surveillance system in the Association’s office area, which was connected to the building’s closed-circuit television lines.
The office building’s guard room also noticed the strange situation, and as they could see from the array of surveillance screens, the security guards were also very anxious. One of the three elevators was out of order, hovering between the eighteenth and nineteenth floors, with a man locked inside.
“Coraci!” John looked at the surveillance screen, startled.
In the slightly dim emergency lighting of the elevator compartment, Deville Coraci was clinging to the compartment wall, his hair a little messy.
The girl at the front desk said into the microphone, “Mr. Coraci, this is the Association’s front desk. The radio in the office building’s guard room has been cut off, but the Association’s is still working. How’s it going on your end?”
Instead of Coraci, she was answered by a sharper, raspy voice with a sobbing tone, “Erica! Get Instructor Jere Dooley to come talk!”
Instructor Jere was also the head of the law enforcement team in the Association’s branch. He took the girl’s seat at the front desk in front of the microphone and monitor screen. He asked, “Simeon? Is that you?”
John stared at the monitor, but only Coraci could be seen on the screen. There was no other person in the elevator… Is that “Simeon” a spirit like Hai Jiu and Wu Jiu?
John also noticed that Coraci looked terrible. He looked a little hypoxic — his lips were slightly trembling, his shoulders were drawn up, and he kept slowly shuffling his feet, as if searching for a more comfortable position.
“Simeon, what are you doing? Let go of Mr. Coraci!” Jere demanded.
The voice called Simeon said,”He’s a hostage, and I’m not going to hurt him for now. You see, I slipped through the vent opening and didn’t even touch him. But if you don’t give Linda up, I’m going to take him with me and die!”
John looked closely and still didn’t see anyone else in the elevator. And what did “slip through the vent opening” mean?
Several trainees also looked puzzled. The girl at the front desk pointed to the screen and whispered,”Look at the colors of the elevator cars.”
The interiors of all three elevators were metallic gray, but at this time, the elevator where Coraci was located was light green. Originally, John thought that it was emergency lighting, or that the monitoring screen’s coloring was off. A closer look showed that the emergency lights were orange, and Coraci himself did not glow the same green as the walls.
“What is that thing?” John braced himself against the table, hating that he couldn’t press his face right up to the screen.
“Gilomorphs,” the girl at the front desk said.
The trainees had learned that gilomorphs were a supernatural species that could squeeze themselves into any shape, like the Slimes in video games. Of course, they usually were not spherical like the ones in the video games, but instead shaped more like people.
Gilomorphs did not have detailed features; they would have a featureless, flat face on a human form, with features as lacking in detail as a Play-Doh creation. They could change into tall or short bodies, but no matter what, they could not simulate facial features.
They would wear clothes and hats to cover their faces and live among humans. There were many ghost stories related to them-most of them about people who unintentionally saw their faces and were scared out of their wits. In fact, the most frightening aspect about gilomorphs is that they can not only shrink themselves into fist-sized high-density objects, but can also stretch themselves into flat surfaces of varying thicknesses or huge three-dimensional hollow objects.
At this moment, there was a green gilomorph with a body wrapped around the elevator from the outside in, causing the elevator to be stuck in the elevator shaft.
“Simeon, this matter has nothing to do with Mr. Coraci,” said Instructor Jere. “Do you not remember, Mr. Coraci even once helped you find a house to live in — he helped you! You’re implicating the innocent.”
“I could care less! Hand over Linda! Or I’ll go to hell for Linda and take Coraci with me! I’ll send the elevator crashing down!”
“Are you sick?!” John couldn’t help but yell. “You can’t fall to your death!”
“Who are you?” Simeon asked. He could only hear the sound from the speakers, but couldn’t see this side of the room.
“I’m Coraci’s partner,” John said loudly. “You can fall to your death? You couldn’t die if you were crushed by an elevator! Are you playing dumb or are you really dumb?”
Simeon was silent for a moment, and John noticed that Coraci still looked very uncomfortable inside the elevator. John asked, “What the hell did you do to him?”
“I didn’t do anything! I just kidnapped him!” Simeon grunted in exasperation. “Wait a minute! I really can’t fall to my death?”
John turned around and backed away. Instructor Jere asked, “John! What are you doing?”
“I’m going to check on Coraci. He seems out of sorts.”
Jere nodded. “Go ahead. Coraci is claustrophobic.”
John felt a little surprised. Of course, that made it all the more necessary for him to rush over. As the other trainees were wondering how he planned to get into the elevator, John turned into a thick black mist and disappeared into the vent.
“Wow! First time I’ve seen a vampire turn into mist with my own eyes!” the muscle-bound male witch exclaimed.
From The Unthreatening Creature Protection Association’s Guide to Unscientific Monsters:
Witch Blood Descendants
Witches originate from the bloodlines of ancient priestesses. They inherit the long-lost magical lineage of extinct ancient magical beings. For generations, these powers were primarily passed down to females (males could inherit them too, but with weaker abilities, and many perished quickly in wars). Over time, this lineage earned the title of Witch Blood Descendant.
A “witch” is not the same as an “enchantress”. An enchantress is a woman who studies and practices witchcraft, while a witch refers to a being of this special bloodline. Eventually, the term “witch” came to include any being — male or otherwise — who inherits this lineage.
The most basic function of witch blood is that it can replace almost any mundane spellcasting material. Only certain large ritual implements cannot be substituted. Male witches have inherently weaker spellcasting abilities but still find it easier than ordinary humans to control magic.
