Heinrich shut down the engines and left Blizzard hovering in space, with a stereoscopic projection of planets, large and small, flying and spinning. He glanced at Lin Xu, who was raising his hand to fix his hair around his ear, the effect of the rapid acceleration and deceleration on him for a short period of time having subsided.
The yellow button was pressed and the mecha’s AI alerted the capsule pilot that the gravity system had been shut down.
There was a strange surging sensation in his internal organs, and Lin Xu’s Adam’s apple rolled up and down to suppress the discomfort. He unbuckled the metal buckle of his seat belt and braced himself against the seat to stand up, not realizing that he had used too much force and floated straight out, against the upper wall of the cockpit.
Heinrich also unbuckled his seat belt, his movements skilled like a cetacean swimming in the ocean, “I read history books, it is written that when ancient Earth humans first entered space, gravity systems had not yet been invented, and had been in a weightless state of exploration.”
Lin Xu nodded, his waist and abdominal muscles fired, flipped in mid-air, and flew to the ground with a stomp of his foot, “Right. Humans desperately wanted to enter the universe.”
“But if we want to enter deep space on a long-term, large-scale basis, humans must master gravity control technology.” Heinrich floated above.
Lin Xu tapped his fingers and gently pushed himself off the ground to avoid hitting his head on the ground. He floated in mid-air and turned to face Heinrich, his half-length black hair flowing into a free overdrive, “The very first cosmic gravity system was a huge ring-shaped device that used centrifugal force to create a sense of gravity, not as small as it is now.”
When the apocalypse struck, several of Earth’s most powerful survivor bases still held space launch technology and resources, and some of these factions saw the search for a new home beyond Earth as the ultimate means of salvation, and with their covert funding humanity’s lunar outposts and space stations built for deep space exploration before the apocalypse grew more prosperous.
“The Alliance is also using this technology to build large space cities.” Heinrich says, “It’s more resource-efficient than normal gravity systems.”
In Einstein Galaxy, the Exiled Alliance Fleet was the biggest threat Imperial faced from within humanity, and the Alliance was said to have grown as it broke with Ark Fleet managers on humanity’s journey away from Earth in search of a new home, breaking away from the fleet on its own.
After the Ark Fleet found the Earth-like planet, it dropped its ship and began to rebuild its home, developing into the Imperial system, but the Alliance maintained the name of the fleet and military governance, while refusing to live on a fixed planet, gradually building a series of planetary and stellar artificial space cities.
The Imperial history textbook did not describe in detail the reasons why humans left Earth, but only read out the environmental destruction, resource depletion and other reasons. Lin Xu suspected that the current time and space did not have continuity with his past time and space, but was more like a parallel universe where humans did not encounter the zombie outbreak.
All the information of the Alliance was strictly limited by the Empire, cracking down on smuggling, and even establishing a solid and extensive Michael’s defense line in the face of the Alliance, always preparing for the possible coming war.
But after the Battle of Marquee thirty years ago, there have been decades of no more large-scale war between the two, and both sides maintained a relative state of harmony.
Lin Xu had no experience in moving in weightlessness, and when he moved just now, he sent himself completely out of the lendable range. His hands and feet could not touch the objects inside the cabin, and he curved his body to float inside the cockpit, and so did Heinrich.
Outside the wide front view window was the infinite universe, the planets reflected the sky light into the cabin, the deep and quiet background, the two slowly floating, as if their bodies formed a complete circle, history and time and space flashed in between the words.
Heinrich could see that Lin Xu was somewhat helpless in his weightless state, he grabbed the cabin roof handle with one hand and reached for Lin Xu with the other, pulling the man up as Lin Xu handed out his hand, the circle turned into intertwined figures, and the peaceful air began to stir.
“Ugh-” Lin Xu whimpered, without resistance, his nose hitting Heinrich’s shoulder blade head on, sore and numb.
Lin Xu sniffed his nose, which was instantly red, and Heinrich subconsciously raised his hand to touch it, but stopped halfway and stiffly moved it away, replacing it with a brush of Lin Xu’s black hair, which was floating in the air like seaweed.
His black hair was thin and soft, with slightly curly ends, and his palm fell gently on the end of his hair, and the force he could feel on his scalp in this situation was so light that it could be ignored.
But Lin Xu felt it and seemed a little uncomfortable with the stranger’s touch, tilted his head, looked at Heinrich and said, “I don’t have a hair tie, let it float.”
The movement backfired, and as he moved, Heinrich’s fingers slipped into the black hair, his fingers sliding against the roots, tainted with heat, his hand trembling, carefully brushing the black hair in the same direction before pulling back.
Lin Xu’s eyes were half-lidded, allowing him to move. A quiet and ambiguous atmosphere flowed between them. Heinrich settled down, held Lin Xu’s shoulders and brought him back to his seat, “Sit down, I’ll turn on the gravity system again.”
After watching Lin Xu reattach his seat belt, Heinrich pressed the yellow button and landed lightly from the air. He asked Lin Xu to wait and went around to the rear compartment with his back to the seat to pour two glasses of water.
Blizzard’s AI relied on a mechanical arm to hold the water cups and control the water dispenser mouth, one of which was hot water, the steam rising with the liquid dense out, puffing on Heinrich’s jaw. He suddenly raised his left hand and sniffed his fingertips. A short touch, a light sweet aroma around the fingertips.
The steam coats the skin with a layer of moisture, and the hot temperature cools quickly under the constant air in the cockpit, reminiscent of another hand with cold, soft fingers.
The AI reminds him, “The water is full.”
Heinrich snapped back to his senses and immediately dropped his hand, casting a glance in the direction of the pilot’s seat as he picked up the glass of water. Heinrich exhaled, returned to his seat, and handed Lin Xu the hot water.
Lin Xu thanked him, and the two of them fell into a kind of silence, Lin Xu staring sideways at a reflective dashboard ahead of him, the glass surface shining brightly with a view of the rear cabin. He could see everything without turning around.
Lin Xu knew the relationship was moving forward, but Heinrich’s actions in the background were, ahem… a little more than he expected. He began to think about whether he should tighten up a bit or just let things play out. Hot water crossed his esophagus, and Arnold’s voice on the comm channel interrupted Lin Xu’s overly diffuse thoughts.
“Marshal, a ship belonging to the Silver Fortress is approaching our fleet and requesting a landing on the Victoria from us. The other side said that they were ordered by the fortress commander to deliver an invitation to Marshal Chu, and that Commander Hill will host a banquet for Abyss Fleet and the expedition tomorrow when the fleet berths into the airfield.”
“Declined.” Heinrich replied decisively, “Send someone from Foreign Affairs to dock with their ship, and tell them that the flagship Victoria is to guarantee absolute safety and will not accept landings from strange ships.”
“As ordered.” Arnold continued to ask, “Marshal, may I ask if you accept Commander Hill’s banquet invitation?”
“A banquet invitation for the entire Abyss Fleet and the expedition?”
“Yes.”
“Accepted.” Heinrich didn’t hesitate, “Have the ship captains rearrange the fleet’s rotating watch during the banquet to ensure safe berthing.”
The Hill Family clan was an old Imperial noble, said to be related to the royal family by blood, and Heinrich would not go to the other side’s face if not necessary. After making quick arrangements, Heinrich turned to Lin Xu, who was waiting in silence, and asked, “Do you want to go?”
Lin Xu’s lips straightened, “Another party?”
