Chapter 4: A Body Falling From the Sky

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

Zhou Yan had been looking forward to the merchant contacting him, what he wanted was not only the annual goods, but also the instrument materials he ordered from his side last time.

The most uncomfortable thing for Zhou Yan after coming to the Zedoary Continent was the huge technological gap between this world and his original world. Not only was it inconvenient to live, many instruments disappeared into thin air, and most importantly, there was a lack of materials. He could try to make the instruments himself, but there were many materials necessary for the manufacture of instruments that simply could not be obtained. This was the biggest headache, sometimes in order to manufacture a small part, he had to look for materials for a long time.

This time, as a consignor, he was looking for a lens used to manufacture a super telescope.

Super telescope manufacturing principle and ordinary telescope was the same, but the lens requirements were more demanding, its lens must be absolutely pure and flawless, could not have any bubbles or impurities, with which it could see more distant stars.

Zhou Yan also tried to burn the glass himself, but the burned glass did not meet the requirements of the super telescope. So he asked the supplier to help keep an eye on it, and if this instrument could be successfully developed, a lot of his research could have a breakthrough.

A few days ago, the supplier told Zhou Yan that he had found the kind of clear glass that met his requirements, and he had been looking forward to it, and, if the snow had not blocked the way into the mountains, he would have gotten it.

But to be honest, few people like to come to Kohl Town after the Third Street to do business, because the higher the number of the street, the poorer the people living on the street, and the more chaotic the environment naturally. People who were not capable of protecting themselves would not come to this area. Moreover, the merchants on the Zedoary Continent did not earn much money, and no one would choose to become a merchant if they did not have the means to farm. Today, this merchant was very rare in Zhou Yan’s opinion, he was aloof, but he was very sharp in doing business.

Zhou Yan liked people who talk little.

But because of the heavy snow and today’s business, Zhou Yan had to go to the town exchange point to pick up. The “money” for the exchange was two bags of summer wheat, and after packing the cart, he set out.

At this time of the year, grain could be used directly as exchange currency, anyway, the money was useless here, give him two bags of grain, the merchant may also be happy.

“Why suddenly come today? Isn’t the wind and snow still deep?”

The merchant’s name was Liu Yi, a bearded, thin man with a bad complexion, who seemed to have severe malnutrition. “There is a shortage of food at home.”

Liu Yi succinctly explained the reason why he ventured out, and then loaded the two bags of grain brought by Zhou Yan onto the cart, and a smile finally appeared on his cold face. Liu Yi was originally a wanderer, he did not have a household registration, so he was not allocated a field, but two years ago on the road for business, he met a woman who also wandered. He took her in, and then the two got married, and had a daughter.

Liu Yi’s wife was not well, so he was willing to come here to deliver for Zhou Yan, all because he could get the special medicine from him.

Zhou Yan handed over a box of drugs, and Liu Yi’s face had a more obvious smile. Zhou Yan gave a helpless sigh. “I have to remind you once again, this is just ordinary painkillers, treating the symptoms but not the root cause. You’d better bring her to me early for a full body checkup, some diseases are better to treat early rather than late.”

Liu Yi nodded. “I know, I’ll bring her over when the snow melts.”

“You have said this many times, it is best to really bring her soon.”

Half a year ago, Liu Yi’s wife was taking these drugs, saying that sometimes the pain was so bad that she couldn’t sleep. Zhou Yan didn’t want to prescribe him painkillers, but couldn’t resist Liu Yi’s begging.

According to the symptoms described by Liu Yi, Zhou Yan guessed that she might have gallstones.

The transaction process was not very bumpy, except that when Liu Yi handed him the items, he was surprised to find that the two pieces that met the requirements were of crystal-like structure. Moreover, the two pieces were pure and flawless, without any bubbles or impurities, almost like perfect imitations of modern industry.

In his time, these two pieces of crystal should be very valuable—perhaps in this era they would also be valuable. There should be rich people in this era, and there were doors to sell to rich people, and they would be exchanged for more things. But since Liu Yi needed Zhou Yan’s help in this area of medicine, he was very generous.

He was very good to his wife.

Zhou Yan left satisfied with the few pieces of beef and crystals he ordered. He wanted to get back as soon as possible, and if he rushed tonight, he might be able to make the lens for the super telescope.

When Zhou Yan returned to Fifth Street, it was already dark and snowing, and he felt very irritable for some reason. Because of this feeling, Zhou Yan quickly rushed to his home. Although the road was a bit slippery, he still ran fast—he had never had any sixth sense, and for him to suddenly have this feeling that something may really happen, he wanted to hurry. The most valuable thing in his house was his equipment, if it were to be damaged, to replace it, he would need to spend more than just money.

Zhou Yan wanted to get rid of this unlucky thought, walked not far from the entrance of his house, inadvertently looked up, and suddenly saw a blue fireball like a comet, cutting through the entire black sky, rushing to the ground. Zhou Yan froze, finally understood where he was upset from—the unlucky blue fireball fell in the direction of his home!

Zhou Yan couldn’t care less and hurriedly ran towards the direction of his door. But the more worried he was about the fireball falling on his house, the more the unlucky thing was against him. Even though Fifth Street was so long, the fireball did not go to anyone else’s house, it landed exactly in his yard—the neighbor’s eaves did not move even a little. After seeing the bright blue flame hit the ground, and rise straight up three feet high, Zhou Yan was scared to death—this bright blue flame very similar to the color of methane in oxygen when fully burned. Methane gas for the convenience of cooking, this can not be a fucking pipe leak, right?

Zhou Yan rushed into the yard like a gust of wind, swinging a shovel to the fire to bury it with snow. If this was really a pipe leak, he was finished. If it touched this open fire, his entire home would be blown up into the sky, and all the equipment and drugs at home would be blown to pieces. But it could not be ah, in order to avoid this situation, he would do a monthly pipeline inspection, and personally check it! How was it possible…

Zhou Yan, filled with self-doubt, frantically shoveled snow, until even sand and rocks mixed with the snow, but soon he put out those bright blue flames.

Okay, okay. There was no accident…

Zhou Yan looked at the snow piled calf-high by himself, and was finally relieved. He threw the shovel in his hand down, sat directly on his butt next to the pile of snow, and then fumbled to pull out the crystal from his pants pocket. Zhou Yan could not help but laugh, just in a hurry to put out the fire, did not know where he had thrown his beef away to, but fortunately the crystal was still there, this could not be lost.

Zhou Yan was sitting on the ground to calm his breathing when he suddenly felt that the pile of snow around him was not quite right, he stared at the bulge on the ground and frowned, and got up to light up the yard lights. Under this light, Zhou Yan found that buried under the snow and gravel was a humanoid object—although buried most of the body by the mud and snow, but still could be seen as a person.

Zhou Yan reached out and brushed away the snow from the upper half of the other person’s body and gradually got a better look at him. This person was wearing a strange black robe, had a hideous and ugly appearance, now he had his eyes closed while lying flat on the ground, and did not seem to be breathing.

…Not breathing was normal. Since he had just burned in such a high fire, he should have long become a corpse.

Fifth Street was very chaotic, but not to this extent: Zhou Yan lived here for so many years, and never met a body falling from the sky.

Zhou Yan stared at the black-robed man pondering for a long time, frowning more and more tightly. He had just rushed to put out the fire, and did not have time to think too much, but now thinking about it, it was really strange… What flame could burn like this? Whether it be the fact that it was bright blue, or was burning outside on a body, was it the phosphorus in the bones in advance of running out?

Zhou Yan squatted beside the black-robed man, brushed away some snow and mud, put his hand under his black robe and gently squeezed a few times. His fingers touched the muscles that were rich and resilient, completely unlike the appearance of a long-dead body, not to mention signs of decay. Then Zhou Yan carefully observed him from top to bottom and felt more puzzled, this guy actually burned for some time, the black robe was not even damaged… What kind of material was it made out of?

Zhou Yan pondered for a long time and suddenly thought of some things that had been ignored before, such as the “carrier pigeon” that could automatically send letters according to the randomly written address, such as those who would somehow call him “mystic”… This guy with blue fire all over his body, could he have some connection with a mystic or something like that?

Although he doesn’t want to admit it, Zhou Yan actually understood in his heart that he had never faced up to the laws of this world: he had been trying to explain things around him with the known scientific view. Since he had not been exposed to too much weirdness, things around him could still be explained clearly, so he had been living in his own world with peace of mind. But maybe there really was some science on the Zedoary Continent that went beyond his own learning, but because it didn’t appear around him very often, he ignored it.

Zhou Yan stared at the corpse and his eyes glowed. Wasn’t it a great opportunity? People around him don’t approve of him dissecting the carrier pigeon, now there was a corpse dropped in his yard, he can dissect this corpse!

Zhou Yan thought of this, and was suddenly full of energy. He rose from the ground, and then grabbed the arm of the corpse on the ground, dragging him to his home.

If someone passed by Zhou Yan’s house at this time, they may be scared half to death. He was dragging a corpse wearing a black robe into the house in the middle of the night—this kind of behavior was definitely like the villain of a horror movie. Not to mention the fact that there were already enough legends about Zhou Yan, a strange character on Fifth Street, and if he was really found, there would be some more strange rumors.

Zhou Yan wanted to take the corpse to the basement, which was his special place for autopsy, and sometimes for minor surgery. But the corpse was too heavy, and after dragging him that little bit, he was tired. Zhou Yan originally wanted to carry him up, but did not expect to not be able to pick up the weight. When he was still an alpha, he may have been able to easily cope with it, but now he had become an omega; his physical strength really could not keep up, and he could only slowly drag him.

Zhou Yan took a lot of effort to get the corpse onto the operating table, and the dazzling light hit the black-robed man’s face, further sharpening the angles of his face, which was really ugly at a glance.

Not only ugly, but also hideous, a hundred times uglier than the ugliest and most hideous villains in film and television dramas. Skinny cheeks like a skeleton, high cheekbones, pale face… He was so abstract and ugly that he was so impressive that it was impossible to imagine a human being looking like this. Even a scientific researcher like Zhou Yan, who definitely did not judge people by their appearance, could not help but think he was ugly.

Forget it, it’s a corpse, there was no difference between beauty and ugliness.

“Thank you for offering your body, science will record your dedication to history.”

Zhou Yan bowed respectfully toward the black-robed man—this was his ritual in school in Xue Dao, his teacher said, treat the great body teacher with respect in mind, before dissection must have such a ritual. Do not underestimate the sense of ritual, it would allow people to deepen the impression of once for the matter to be reverent every time the ritual was performed, not to think that the human body was something that could be dissected at will.

Especially for these highly intelligent people, moral restraint was very necessary.

Zhou Yan was willing to use this ritual to control his behavior, he was also afraid that he would become out of control after getting used to dissection, or even like the people in urban legends, become a psychopathic killer doctor. So even though he graduated a long time ago, Zhou Yan still maintains this habit.

After all this, Zhou Yan picked up the surgical scissors and tried to cut the black robe off his body. But after several attempts, Zhou Yan found that the robe was very tough, and this unknown material, no matter what scalpel or knife, there was no way to destroy it. Zhou Yan had to take off his robe.

This corpse was very pale, as if it had been covered under the black robe for years, not seeing the sunlight, to be covered like this, but his body was good, even to a certain extent, though his face destroyed the impact.

Zhou Yan used surgical scissors to randomly poke the body’s abdominal muscles. The body’s muscle resilience was particularly good, and was not at all like that loss of vitality of a dead body. He took the scissors and poked the corpse twice in the jaw, and was thinking about how to cut, when the “corpse” he was looking down on suddenly opened its eyes.

Zhou Yan did not have time to dodge and was stared right in the eyes.

How to describe these eyes… Although the eyelids were drooping down, very unhinged, his pupils inside were very special.

They were like a starry sky in the winter just after the snow had fallen, deep, shadowy, and interspersed with a fine, cold light. This pair of eyes were frightening, but also good-looking, and was very incongruous with his ugly face.

Zhou Yan looked at him expressionlessly for a long time, and his tone was a bit regretful. “I can’t believe you’re not dead?”

I had a feeling that would happen! Friendly or dangerous? Although lying (supposedly) naked on an operating table in ZY’s basement, might not help things.
Thank you both for the chapter.
