Chapter 1: Omega/Guide World

In 2723, on the distant planet of Finna, a world transformed by genetic advancements, a new order of humanity emerged. The genetic testing of the past had given birth to a unique classification of individuals: omega males and females capable of bearing children. However, this innovation also introduced the enigmatic alphas and omegas, who had developed extraordinary abilities, pushing the boundaries of human potential.

The alphas possessed powers that could only be described as mesmerizing. Some could wield fire, conjuring it into vibrant, dancing lions that painted the skies with ephemeral flames. Others were adept at telekinesis, sculpting entire buildings with but a thought, their willpower a master architect. A select few developed an enchanting bond with the natural world, whispering to creatures and conversing with animals as though they shared an age-old, secret language. Yet, there was a dangerous caveat to these extraordinary abilities – the more they were harnessed and exploited, the more dire the backlashes that followed.

In the early years, these supernatural gifts were treated with reverence and discretion, cherished as rare and fragile jewels in society’s crown. However, when an intergalactic war erupted, the world’s military invoked forced conscription, demanding the service of these gifted individuals. Some resisted, but a cunning geneticist unveiled a method to identify espers from birth, forever dooming them to a life of military servitude from their cradle.

This compulsory conscription cast countless espers into unimaginable torment as the explosive consequences of their powers’ backlashes became inescapable. Lives were lost in droves, and despair seemed inevitable until the 99th year of the seemingly unending war when the enigmatic guides appeared miraculously.

Guides emerged as the planet’s last hope with their unique abilities to alleviate the backlash and calm the storm of powers raging within the espers. The symbiotic relationship between guides and espers became starkly apparent, with compatibility being the elusive key to success.

Compatibility was gauged by the distinct scent of an esper’s power, pheromones. No two scents were identical, and during a backlash, an esper’s pheromones would explode, sending guides with a compatibility level of 30% or higher into a state known as “rut.” In this heightened state, guides became singularly focused on guiding the esper, their connection often escalating to intimate encounters, as the physical contact facilitated the transfer of guiding power. Yet, this communion also bore unintended consequences in the form of pregnancies among omega espers during particularly tumultuous backlashes.

A comprehensive system was established to mitigate these destructive repercussions, mandating that each esper have a permanent guide. The Guide Center arose as a beacon of hope and stability, a sanctuary where compatibility between guides and espers over eighteen was meticulously tested, ensuring the survival and sanity of both groups in the volatile cauldron of Finna’s society.

In the bustling metropolis of Drestin, where skyscrapers scraped the heavens and neon lights painted the night in vivid hues, a man lived unlike any other. His name was Lucien Sterling, but to those in the shadows of power, he was simply known as the “Omega Sentinel.”

Lucien, an omega, defied all expectations in a world consumed by the classification of abilities. His powers remained beyond the grasp of measurement, a riddle confounding the geneticists and scientists of the age. They had deemed him “unmeasurable,” a designation reserved for the truly extraordinary, those who transcended all known boundaries.

Within the clandestine realm of the police secret service, Lucien was a figure shrouded in mystery, on a mission as clear as the sky on a crisp morning: to protect high-class guides and espers from the relentless perils of their dangerous world. He moved through the city with the grace of a shadow, silent yet ever-vigilant. His distinctive silver hair and piercing emerald eyes made him memorable, but his aura of quiet authority truly commanded respect.

Lucien possessed an uncanny gift for sensing danger as if he could hear the hushed whispers of impending threats carried on the wind. It was said that when he was near, even danger itself hesitated. His role was not solely about safeguarding; it was also about prevention, ensuring that those under his protection could live their lives without the perpetual specter of a backlash lurking around every corner.

As the Omega Sentinel, Lucien Sterling was not merely a guardian but a beacon of hope, a symbol of the indomitable spirit of his people. His life was a delicate balance between wielding his formidable powers and selflessly serving those who needed him the most. To the city’s elite, he was a name whispered in reverent tones, a mythic enigma whose presence was only known through reputation. Those he safeguarded rarely laid eyes on his face. Still, they understood that he was the guardian in the shadows, their final bastion against a world that exacted a heavy toll on those with extraordinary abilities.

Beneath Lucien’s seemingly unshakable exterior lay a secret flaw, hidden from all but a select few who had ventured close enough to glimpse the fault lines in his facade. His Achilles’ heel, his most guarded vulnerability, was a quick temper, a searing inferno that flared to life with the swiftness of a spark igniting dry tinder. When provoked, his emerald eyes, usually calm and penetrating, would transform into a blaze of fury, an intensity that sent tremors through anyone unfortunate enough to witness it.

He had grappled with this flaw for years, a facet of himself that he loathed. The raging storm beneath his otherwise controlled demeanor was a fire he struggled to quell, often leading to impulsive decisions and explosive bursts of anger. This mercurial aspect of his character had won him both ardent allies and formidable adversaries. Some admired his passionate commitment and willingness to fight for what he believed in, while others feared the unpredictable turbulence of his temper.

Lucien’s overriding desire to protect those under his care frequently brought him into direct conflict with higher-ranking officers in the military. His fierce protectiveness of the guides and espers he had sworn to safeguard often led him to challenge orders he perceived as jeopardizing the safety of those he had devoted his life to protecting. He held an unyielding reluctance to unthinkingly obey military commands that he viewed as unjust or detrimental to the people he had dedicated himself to serving.

This defiant streak had, time and again, positioned him as a maverick within the Secret Service. He refused to be a mere pawn in the military’s grand strategic game, even when doing so risked his reputation and, more critically, his safety. For Lucien, the fiery determination to shield those he loved and the blazing temper so tightly entwined with it formed a powerful, relentless force that thrust him into a world of ceaseless conflict within himself and the broader arena of his mission.

Amidst the labyrinthine alleys of Destin, a shadowy figure lurked with nefarious intent. This figure bore no name, only an alias whispered in hushed tones throughout the criminal underbelly – “Midnight Viper.” Dressed in a coat as dark as the night, Midnight Viper was known for cunning and ruthlessness.

Their target was an Omega guide, Alaric Kincaid. The rich scent of Alaric’s pheromones had drawn Midnight Viper to him like a moth to a flame. This guide held the potential to enhance the powers of any esper, and that was a power that could command any price on the black market.

As Midnight Viper’s plan to abduct Alaric took shape, the city’s underworld trembled with anticipation. It was only a matter of time before the Omega guide would be snatched from the clutches of the high society that shielded him.

However, the criminal world’s machinations would soon come face to face with Lucien Sterling’s fierce determination to protect those under his care. Lucien had been tracking Midnight Viper’s activities and sensed the looming danger. His temper smoldered as he uncovered the plot to kidnap Alaric, and he knew that he must act swiftly to thwart this nefarious scheme.

Lucien Sterling discovered something unexpected when he closed in on Midnight Viper. It was widely known that espers possessed extraordinary abilities, and even some skilled criminals had unique talents. However, Midnight Viper held a power that sent shivers down Lucien’s spine.

They could manipulate the shadows themselves.

Midnight Viper had mastered the art of shadow manipulation to a level that defied comprehension. They could meld with the darkness, vanishing into the inky depths of their surroundings, rendering themselves nearly invisible. It was a power that allowed them to traverse even the most well-lit and heavily guarded areas with uncanny ease.

As Lucien pursued Midnight Viper through the dimly lit alleys, he soon realized that he was not only hunting a criminal but also grappling with an adversary who could seamlessly merge with the shadows, making them an elusive and formidable opponent. This unexpected power turned the already high-stakes game of cat and mouse into a thrilling battle of wits and abilities.

Lucien’s temper simmered beneath the surface. With every elusive twist and vanishing act, frustration gnawed at him like a relentless itch he couldn’t scratch. He was accustomed to being in control, to predict the moves of those he sought to apprehend. Still, Midnight Viper’s shadow manipulation power had thrown his plans into chaos.

Lucien’s normally cool and calculating emerald eyes burned with an intensity that matched the fiery lions he had seen espers conjure. A muttered curse escaped his lips as he reached another dead end, the shadows concealing his adversary once more. His gloved hands clenched into fists, his knuckles white against the dark leather.

He hated this feeling of helplessness, the sensation of being outsmarted and outmaneuvered. Lucien fiercely protected those under his care and, failing to capture Midnight Viper, swiftly stoked the embers of his quick temper into a blazing inferno. Each second that passed felt like an eternity, and with every elusive escape, his impatience grew.

Alaric Kincaid’s safety hung in the balance, and Lucien’s inability to apprehend the kidnapper gnawed at his core. It was a sensation he loathed, and the sense of urgency to end this danger clawed at him like a beast, threatening to unleash the full extent of his fiery temper.

For Lucien, the frustration of not catching Midnight Viper quickly was like a storm brewing within, threatening to erupt with destructive force, and it was a storm that would inevitably alter the course of their dangerous game.

As the moon hung high in the night sky, casting a pale, silvery glow over the city, Lucien and “Midnight Viper” found themselves in an open courtyard where the moonlight obliterated the shadows that had concealed the Viper’s movements. They stood facing each other, the tension in the air palpable.

The moonlight bathed the surroundings in an otherworldly radiance, revealing the determined look in Lucien’s emerald eyes, now calmer, focused, and more resolute. His breath formed misty puffs in the chill night air.

Lucien’s voice, laced with a quiet intensity, broke the silence. “No more shadows to hide in, Viper. It’s just you and me under the moonlight now.”

Midnight Viper, caught between the light of the moon and the relentless pursuer, couldn’t help but admire Lucien’s tenacity. The Viper was known for his ability to blend into the darkness, but he had never encountered someone as unyielding as the Omega Sentinel.

Midnight Viper’s eyes showed a cunning glint as he responded, “Impressive, Omega Sentinel. You’ve managed to back me into a corner. What do you propose?”

Lucien’s lips curled into a determined half-smile. “A bet, Viper. I bet that I can catch you before the night is over.”

Midnight Viper raised an eyebrow, his intrigue piqued. “And what’s the prize if you win?”

Lucien paused for a moment, his gaze unwavering. “Your capture and the safety of Alaric Kincaid. But if I lose, you walk away, free as a shadow.”

The stakes were set, and the two adversaries knew this bet’s outcome could alter their lives. Under the watchful moon, Lucien Sterling’s relentless pursuit transformed into a desperate race against time, and Midnight Viper’s elusive skills faced the ultimate test.

The night had grown colder, and the moon hung low in the sky when the fateful moment arrived. Lucien Sterling, the Omega Sentinel and “Midnight Viper,” had engaged in a relentless game of wits and abilities. As the bet hung in the air, it was clear that the outcome would alter their destinies.

With every passing minute, the tension between them intensified. Lucien’s emerald eyes never wavered, tracking the Viper’s every move. For all his elusiveness, the Viper felt the weight of the impending decision.

Midnight Viper launched himself forward in a daring move, displaying his shadow manipulation skills to the fullest. But Lucien was ready. With preternatural speed, he leaped and seized the Viper by the arm. Their eyes locked, and there was a flicker of surprise in Midnight Viper’s gaze, realizing that he was caught.

Lucien’s grip on the Viper tightened, and the realization struck them both. The Omega Sentinel had won the bet. As the seconds ticked away, the air seemed to crackle with energy, and Lucien’s body emitted an ethereal, radiant glow like the moonlight had been absorbed by his very being.

Midnight Viper’s powers, the mastery of shadows, were siphoned away and absorbed into Lucien’s essence. A gasp of disbelief escaped the Viper as he realized the extent of what had just occurred.

The Omega Sentinel released his captive and watched as the Viper’s shadow flickered and dissipated like a wisp of smoke, leaving him just a normal man. Lucien’s newfound abilities manifested, granting him control over the shadows that had once concealed his adversary.

The night was still, and Lucien Sterling stood under the moonlight, the victor of the bet. He had captured Midnight Viper and absorbed his powers, forever changing his life. With a newfound command of shadows, he became a force to be reckoned with, and the safety of Alaric Kincaid was secured.

In the heart of the city, where the intricate dance of guides and espers took center stage, there existed an Alpha guide who had lost interest in the captivating performance of compatibility testing. Meet Alistair Thornton, an Alpha guide with a reputation for apathy.

Tall and well-built, Alistair had a rugged handsomeness that caught the eye of many, but his impassive expression often left people wondering what lay beneath the surface. He could guide and form symbiotic relationships with espers, but he had grown disillusioned with the meticulous matching process at the Guide Center.

Alistair’s disinterest in the bustling Guide Center became evident in how he did his duties. He followed the protocols with a lackluster attitude, his inherent talents wasted on dull matches. He watched as others diligently sought compatible partnerships while he merely played his part, his mind drifting into the far reaches of daydreams.

With piercing sapphire eyes that rarely reflected emotion and tousled auburn hair, Alistair often gave off an aura of indifference. The bustle of the Guide Center was a constant backdrop to his internal musings, leaving many to wonder what had dulled the spark in his otherwise gifted abilities.

In a world where guides were meant to find their ideal matches, Alistair Thornton was the exception – a bored Alpha guide who longed for something more, perhaps an unexpected twist that would rekindle the flames of excitement in his life.

It was a typical day at the Guide Center, with the same humdrum routines and the same meticulous compatibility testing. Alistair was going through the motions, his sapphire eyes drifting listlessly over compatibility reports. The sighs of applicants and hopeful pairs were like a monotonous melody in the background.

Then, his communicator buzzed with an incoming call. Alistair’s fingers moved lazily as if the call were another mundane task. However, as soon as he heard the voice on the other end, a spark of excitement jolted through him.

“Mr. Thornton, this is Officer Marcus from the police. We need your assistance,” the voice on the other end said.

Alistair straightened in his seat, the disinterest evaporating in an instant. His eyes lit up with a newfound vitality. “Officer Marcus? How can I assist you today?”

The officer quickly explained the situation.

“Of course, Officer Marcus. I’m on my way,” Alistair replied, his voice laced with a renewed sense of purpose.

I really like the idea and the characters and how alphas/espers have powers! The world is well thought out and I enjoy reading about it and would love to read more!

A few things that are a bit confusing:
The term of esper/alpha/omega/sentinel are used very interchangably and it’s a bit confusing to know what is referring to what at times.
The transitions between background and chase of Midnight Viper blend a bit *too* well, it’s hard to seperate, maybe add a line to help separate?

Let me first say that I just love your writing style! It pulls me right in. The background is very intriguing. The characters description were very interesting! I love that whole scene description when Lucien captures the bad guy, I kept reading wanting to find out how this will end and it did not disappoint! That cliffhanger, I’m curious as to why our ML was excited to get this call. I would definitely love for this to be continued, if you have the time to do so! I know it will be great!!
