Chapter 102: Hatred—Part Five

Although he was pierced right through the chest, Jiang Cheng wasn’t so weak as to have died right then. It just wasn’t the best for him to move or conjure up his spiritual powers. He didn’t like it when others tried to help him, turning to Jin Ling he said, “Fuck off.”

Jin Ling knew Jiang Cheng was still mad at him for running around. He felt guilty and didn’t dare defend himself. The dog’s barks came from afar, followed by a sudden wail. Jin Ling shuddered as he remembered what Jin GuangYao said, shouting, “Fairy, run! They’re gonna kill you!”

Soon, Su She rushed through the storm, furious. Jin GuangYao, “You didn’t kill it?”

Su She’s expression darkened, “I couldn’t. Can’t believe the dog’s so spineless. It’s wild when somebody’s there to help it, but as soon as it’s at a disadvantage, it runs away faster than anyone!”

Jin GuangYao shook his head, “It might lead someone else over. We should finish things quickly here.”

Su She, “Those good-for-nothings! I’ll go make them hurry.”

Jin Ling, on the other hand, let out a sigh of relief. Seeing Jiang Cheng sit on the ground, still dark-faced, he turned to Lan WangJi after some hesitation, “HanGuang-Jun, are there any more sitting mats?”

The four mats that they’d been sitting on were all gathered by Lan WangJi. However, there were only four within the temple. After some silence, Lan WangJi stood up and pushed over the one he’d been sitting on.

Jin Ling hurried, “Thank you! It’s fine. I’ll just give him mine…”

Lan WangJi, “There is no need.”

As soon as he finished, he sat down beside Wei WuXian. Even as the two sat so seriously on the same sitting mat, they didn’t seem too cramped. Now that the mat was handed over already, Jin Ling scratched his head before dragging Jiang Cheng over. Jiang Cheng first pressed onto an acupoint at his chest, stopping the blood flow. After he sat down, he looked up and glanced over at Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. He soon looked down again. His face was gloomy, disclosing nothing of what he was thinking.

Right at this point, an ecstatic cry came from behind the palace, “Sect Leader! We got it! A corner is out already!”

Jin GuangYao’s expression relaxed quite somewhat. He quickly walked back behind the palace, “Press on! Please be careful. There’s not much time left.”

Over a dozen streaks of lightning twisted their way across the edge of the sky. They were soon followed by a series of roaring thunder. Over there, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi sat together while Jiang Cheng sat at the side. Jin Ling dragged his own mat over as well. Amid the pounding of the rain, there was a long while of dead, awkward silence. Nobody spoke up.

But for some reason, Jin Ling seemed as if he really wanted to talk to them. After some glancing around, he suddenly began, “Uncle, good thing you stopped that guqin string earlier on, or else things would be pretty bad.”

Jiang Cheng’s face darkened, “You can shut up!”

If not for him leaving Jin GuangYao with a chance for a sneak attack due to his own unstable emotions, he wouldn’t have landed in the enemy’s hands either. On top of that, in reality, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi could’ve completely dodged the attack on their own. Even though, right now, Lan WangJi had no spiritual powers and Wei WuXian’s were low to begin with, their skills were still there. They couldn’t attack, but they were still able to dodge. Clumsily, Jin Ling was trying to speak for his uncle, yet the deliberation made the situation even more awkward.

After being scolded, Jin Ling stopped talking, embarrassed. Jiang Cheng sealed his lips together and didn’t speak again.

Wei WuXian didn’t say anything either. In the past, he’d definitely laugh at Jiang Cheng for being so easily-provoked that he gave the opponent an opportunity. But now, recalling what Jin GuangYao said, he understood everything.

Jiang Cheng knew the truth already.

Lan WangJi stroked Wei WuXian’s back a few more times. Wei WuXian looked up. Lan WangJi didn’t seem at all surprised. His eyes were almost gentle. Wei WuXian felt his heart skip a beat. He couldn’t help but whisper, “… You knew?”

Lan WangJi nodded slowly.

Wei WuXian let out a light breath, “… Wen Ning.”

Wen Ning had originally been keeping Suibian, but now it was in Jiang Cheng’s hands. And on their way back from Lotus Pier, Wen Ning said nothing of such a matter.

Wei WuXian, “When did he say it?”

Lan WangJi, “While you were unconscious.”

Wei WuXian, “This was how we left Lotus Pier?!”

If not that Wen Ning hadn’t found them yet, Wei WuXian would definitely have begun glaring at him already.

Lan WangJi, “He always felt sorry for you.”

Wei WuXian’s tone was tinged with anger, “… I told him so many times not to say it!”

Out of the blue, Jiang Cheng spoke up, “Not to do what?”

Wei WuXian paused in surprise, turning to him along with Lan WangJi. Jiang Cheng covered his wound with one hand, his voice chilly, “Wei WuXian, you’re such a great, selfless person. You did the best things possible, and you swallowed all the suffering and didn’t let anyone know. What a touching story. I should kneel down and cry in gratitude, shouldn’t I?”

Hearing the mocking tone that lacked any courtesy, Lan WangJi’s face grew cold. Jin Ling saw the displeased expression and immediately stood in front of Jiang Cheng, scared that Lan WangJi would kill him with one strike, “Uncle!”

Wei WuXian’s expression worsened as well. He never expected Jiang Cheng to make up with him after he found out the truth, but he didn’t think his tone would be as unkind as ever, either. With a moment of silence, he replied, voice muffled, “I never asked you to thank me.”

Jiang Cheng let out a hah, “Of course. Giving without expecting anything in return. What a high level. Unlike me, of course. So that’s why my father always said you were the one who truly understood the Jiang Sect’s motto and did things the Jiang way, back when he was alive.”

Wei WuXian couldn’t keep on listening any longer, interrupting him, “Enough.”

Jiang Cheng’s voice harshened, “What do you mean, enough? It’s enough as long as you say so? You know everything! You’re better than me at everything! Whether it be talent or cultivation or spirituality or personality, you guys knew everything while I was much lower—then what am I?!?!”

He suddenly reached out, as if to seize Wei WuXian’s collar. Lan WangJi grabbed Wei WuXian’s shoulder with one hand, letting Wei WuXian stand behind him, and with his other hand he forcefully pushed away Jiang Cheng’s hand. Rage could be seen hidden within his eyes. Although his push held no spiritual energy, it was quite powerful in terms of strength. The wound at Jiang Cheng’s chest ripped apart again. Blood surged.

Jin Ling cried, “Uncle, your wound! HanGuang-Jun, spare some mercy!”

However, Lan WangJi’s voice was cold, “Jiang WanYin, spare some virtue!”

Lan XiChen took off his outer robe and lay it over the shivering Nie HuaiSang, “Sect Leader Jiang, please do not be so agitated. Your injury will worsen.”

Jiang Cheng shoved Jin Ling, who’d been holding him up helplessly, out of the way. Even though he was losing blood, it rushed to his head unceasingly. His face switched between white and red, “Why? Wei WuXian, just fucking why?”

Behind Lan WangJi, Wei WuXian replied stiffly, “Why what?”

Jiang Cheng, “Just how much did we the Jiang Sect give you? I’m supposed to be his son, I’m supposed to be the heir of the YunmengJiang Sect, yet all these years I’ve been outdone by you at every single thing. You paid for your bringing-up with life! The lives of my dad, my mom, my sister, and Jin ZiXuan! Because of you, all that’s left is a parentless Jin Ling!”

Jin Ling trembled. His shoulders sunk, and his face sagged as well. Wei WuXian moved his lips, but he couldn’t say anything. Lan WangJi turned around to hold his hand.

On the other hand, Jiang Cheng refused to give up, shouting, “Wei WuXian, who was the one who broke his promise and betrayed the Jiang Sect first? Tell me. That I’d be the sect leader and you’d be my subordinate, that you’d help me your whole life, that so long as the GusuLan Sect had its Two Jades, the YunmengJiang Sect would have its Two Prides, that you’d never betray me or betray the Jiang Sect—who was the one that said these?! I’m asking you—who was the one that said all these?! Did you eat all your fucking words?!”

He got more agitated as he ranted on, “And in the end? You go and protect outsiders, haha! The Wen Sect’s people, even. How much of their rice did you eat?! Defecting with such resolution! What did you take our sect to be?! You did all the best things, yet every time you do the worst ones, it’s involuntary! Forced! With some unspeakable grievances! Grievances?! You told me nothing, you played me for a fool!!!

“Just how much do you owe the Jiang Sect? Am I not supposed to hate you? Can I not hate you?! Why is it that now it’s like I’m supposed to have wronged you?! Why do I have to feel like I’m a fucking clown all these years?! What am I? Do I deserve to be blinded by all your dazzling splendor?! Am I not supposed to hate you?!”

Lan WangJi shot up. With panic, Jin Ling stood in front of Jiang Cheng, “HanGuang-Jun! My uncle’s hurt…”

Jiang Cheng slapped him onto the ground, “Let him come! Am I scared of him?!”

But after the slap, Jin Ling froze. Not only him, Wei WuXian, Lan WangJi, and Lan XiChen all stopped moving.

Jiang Cheng was crying. Tears poured from his eyes as he forced through his teeth, “… Why… Why didn’t you tell me?!”

Jiang Cheng clenched his fist, like he wanted to hit someone, like he wanted to hit himself. In the end, he still slammed it onto the ground. He should’ve been able to loathe Wei WuXian without a care. But right now, the golden core revolving within him took away all that confidence.

Wei WuXian didn’t know what to say.

In the beginning, it was precisely because he didn’t want to see such a Jiang Cheng that he decided not to tell him.

He remembered every single thing he promised Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu—to help and take care of Jiang Cheng. If someone as unhealthily competitive as him found out about this, he’d be dispirited his whole life, too tortured to face himself. There’d always be something he could never overcome, reminding him that he could only reach where he was because of another’s sacrifice. It wasn’t at all his cultivation and his achievement. No matter if he won or lost, he’d long since lost the right to compete.

Afterwards, it was because Jin ZiXuan and Jiang YanLi died for him that he had no face to let others know. To tell Jiang Cheng after what happened then would be like shirking responsibility, hurrying to demonstrate that he’d contributed as well. It’d be like telling Jiang Cheng, don’t hate me, look I’ve contributed to the YunmengJiang Sect too.

Jiang Cheng cried soundlessly, but tears had already streaked across his face. To cry in such an unsightly way in front of others was almost impossible for him in the past. But every single moment that passed from now on, as long as the golden core remained in his body, as long as it could still revolve, he’d forever remember this feeling.

He choked, “… You said I’d be the sect leader and you’d be my subordinate, you said you’d help me your whole life, you said you’d never betray the YunmengJiang Sect… You said so yourself.”

“…” After a moment of silence, Wei WuXian replied, “I’m sorry. I broke my promise.”

Jiang Cheng shook his head, burying his face deep into his palms. A second later, he suddenly burst out with a laugh. His muffled voice mocked, “It’s such a time already, and I still need you to say sorry to me. What a fragile person I am.”

  1. This chapter made me wonder if JC somewhat blames himself for how WWX ended up. If WWX didn’t give JC his golden core, maybe he would have never gone down the demonic path and instead just cultivated like normal. WWX himself said, “Why would I leave the nice, broad road, and walk on a single-plank bridge on a dark, narrow river instead?” WWX didn’t purposely choose this path, but rather he had no other choice.

  2. Powerful chapter Jiang Cheng’s first soul searching, the actual reason he can’t forgive Wei WuXian is that he left his side, not just once but for the 3rd time. The pain he feels now is unbearable as the scene unfolding before his eyes of Wangji & WuXian is proof that he won’t ever come back. All hope is crushed, when he tries to reach out for Wei WuXian only to be pushed away by Lan Wangji. Nothing left but to admit he is fragile, if he could only be this honest all the time…

  3. I actually don’t really like Jiang Cheng .When they were young he genuinely cared for Wei Ying. But as they grew older , Jiang cheng’s jealousy tore them apart. It seemed to me that he used the excuse of everyone hating Wei ying to have him removed from his sect.Even after he found out about the golden core he still doesn’t feel any sort of remorse , like what more does he expect from Wei Ying. He always gets affected by his own emotions and inferiority complex.

Tbh I think he could even be blamed for all of Wei Ying’s misery. But even then the Wei Ying doesn’t hold any resentment towards him.

  4. First of all, thanks for the chapter!

Second, Can I just say that I am just like Lan Zhan towards Jiang Cheng in this chapter xD
I mean… Really, when Jiang Cheng was being a bull**** I was actually saying in my mind.. Wei Ying isn’t asking for your thanks, Jiang Cheng, so can you please, PLEASE for once stop being ungrateful?!

Honestly, I don’t understand Jiang Cheng stans at this moment for labeling Wei Ying as the cause to Jiang Cheng suffering because now that this is revealed?! How can you not see how much Wei Ying cares for Jiang Cheng?! Without Wei Ying’s GC to assist him, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t have lived up to this stage, because he just can’t due to his inferiority complex….

Just as Jiang Cheng is a sympathetic character, Wei Ying is pretty much one too, even more so than Jiang Cheng imo… but I’m not here to weigh who is more sympathetic, even when Jiang Cheng is ungrateful, JC fans should at least be grateful that Wei Ying helped Jiang Cheng lived up to this moment by giving up his life’s cultivation… And he never once, NOT once blamed or hated Jiang Cheng for what he did…

    1. I’m not. JC stan, and as someone who frequents the spoiler thread on NU site, I already read this chapter long ago so it’s not like I’m super shocked or processing all of this now, so everything I think is from a non bias perspective.

The one I think is somewhat bias is yourself. Turning a blind eye to pretend that WWX doesn’t have some blame to bare.

Yes, everything he did, it was all righteous, to protect other people, to protect Mianmian to protect the remaining Wen survivors who helped them after YunmengJiang Clan fell, but all his actions still had consequences, regardless what his intentions were.

If he had listened to JC when JC tried to restrain him from acting against Wen Chao and protected MianMian, then Wen Chao wouldn’t have gotten offended. Wen Chao’s wench wouldn’t have wanted to come and seek revege and demand Madam Yu punish him, thus resulting in Madam Yu striking Wen Chao’s wench and YunmengJiang sect falling under attack.

Was WWX wrong for protecting a helpless girl in need? No. Ofc. Did he expect all that misfortune to befall the Jiang sect? No. Ofc. But It was still his actions that lead to it happening.

Logically speaking, they were in a tough situation. I doubt JC wanted to see Mianmian abused either, but with the Wen Clan having them under control and knowing that if they did anything to offend the Wen Clan, it could endager his sect, he took the best course of action to ensure the security of his clan and the people close to him. Between MianMian and his clan, logically, any one would pick their family first right?

I mean, if your mother was stuck in a burning building with some stranger and you only had the option to save one person, wouldn’t you obviously save your mother?

That was JC’s point of view. WWX point of view is that he grabbed the person person that was closest to his reach from the fire, not thinking about whether or not the other person would be able to survive by the time he got back.

JC thinks with reason, WWX just follows his heart.

Asa result, MianMian is well and alive and probably has a family and living happily while the whole Jiang Clan is dead.

To JC, to you, would MianMian or some stranger be worth your families life??

The same thing happened with the WWX and the remaining Wen survivors.

What did WWX achieve in the end except for buying the Wen survivors some extra time and getting himself killed??

      He lost everything.

Not because he was wrong, but because life isn’t fair, and the good guy doesn’t always get the best ending. There were a lot of people who were scheming against him and aides in his death.

JC ofc is not innocent either, he let his jealousy and reason cloud his judgement. He let it tear him away from WWX, the one person he has left beside Jing Ling.

If JC supportes WWX more in the past and didn’t let his parents seeds of jealousy blind him, things probably might have turned out a little differently.

Either way, both WWX and JC have some blame to bare.

  5. somethings broke …. ah ! my glass heart 💔

When they were young jiang cheng promised wei ying that he did protect him no matter what , wei ying too has always asked him to bury his body for him

BUT THEN OUT OF NOWHERE A JADE LIKE BEAUTY TAKES ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROTECTING WEI YING …this means WAR🔥🔥🔥

i bet the reason why he (jc) snapped was definitely how hubby n wiffy squeeze together on that sitting mat n how hubby was protecting wiffy when fairy came since it used to be his job…

    Meanwhile~
Hubby’s thoughts be like – oh damn!! when is this ending?? i have an EVERYDAY THING to do
    (🔥_🔥)

    thanku~ for the chapter
    (T ^ T)/♥♥♥

    1. @Akatsuki no Yona, I’m not sure whether to take your comment seriously or not… But just leave the whole smut aside… It’s not what Lan Zhan was thinking… In that situation, its relatable why he’s angry or doesn’t hold any positive feelings towards JC for the hurtful things he said to his dear Wei Ying (hey! It’s relatable here!). He pushed JC away because he didn’t want him to hurt Wei Ying anymore than he already did verbally and now physically too?! I can relate to Lan Zhan in this chapter because I was annoyed at JC… Wei Ying is not asking for his thanks nor do he expect them to be able to make up for what happened BUT the words that JC said… It hurts Wei Ying too you know.. he’s only human! Him not saying outright doesn’t mean he’s not hurt by what JC said!

  6. It’s understandable to have inferiority complex when your brother’s so much better at everything. But despite that he still cared for WY. Things turned south when one by one his loved ones died. And last of all, his brother, the “cause” of their death also left (betrayed) him. He has the rights to grief and hate WY for it. Now WY found his happiness with LWJ, leaving JC all bitter and alone, poor him. He’s also a victim, yet everyone thinks of him as the bad guy. It’s like he’s the unluckiest man in the mortal world…

    1. I know right? He’s so fragile on the inside and left by everyone he’s ever loved, and he deep down, he still cares about WWX, athough at the same time he harbors a huge grudge against him, but he still cares. I just want him to be happy for once ;n;

  7. There are so many things I want to say about this, but I cant seem to find the right words…
Anyway thank you as always for the great, but sad chapter!

Seeing Jiang Cheng likes think only proves my theory of, yes JC hates WY, however his self loathing is also present and not knowing how to handle things correctly, as he always keeps to himself, he pushes these negative emotions onto his hate only for now to realize that he doesnt feel that way about wwx even if he wants to, right. (That was one long sentence. Oof)

Also can we please note that yes jc is emotional at the moment but please dont be that rough to Jin Ling ( •́ ̯•̀ )

  8. Thank you so much for the chapter. Your translations are really great. I just love it.
Its really sad that they have to suffer like this…they really need hugs

  9. Just what has happend in this chapter. I feel the ongoing drama, but interally *wheeeze* i want to laugh at Jiang Cheng. Dunno if it is called a man’s pride or stubbornness but he fuqed up the case with WWX, making him hate him more and more. IMO JC in not pitiful at all :/ mby because i m on WWX’s side hahah.
Thank you for your chapter! Love you infinitely <3 keep being awesome !

  10. Finally able to register and login. Hah. A small victory for me 😂

First I would like to sincerely thank K for translating this amazing novel. These past few days I’ve been laughing and crying along with these characters. It’s been a wonderful journey. Oh and the translator notes are gold! Helped me a lot to understand the Chinese culture that’s so thick in this novel. Thank you for your hard work 🙏

As for this particular chapter.. I’m glad Jiang Cheng finally got a chance to let loose all the feelings he held inside. I just never thought he would do it in front of audiences. Poor guy 😅
But after the poison in his heart got out, I hope he and Wei Ying would reconcile again. After all at some point he had to realized that he is loved by Wei Ying. For all of the sacrifices that Wei Ying did for others, the biggest one has been done for Jiang Cheng. If that didn’t come out of (brotherly) love, then I don’t know what would.

  11. JC in my opinion is prety supid in his stubborness. There’s always choice between attitude and he went in hatred , his choice and also effects are consequences. I don’t have any symphaty for him what else even now WWX with his low GC is higher.

  12. I think JC’s anger didn’t start when WWX stayed with LWJ in the cave. It started when WWX provoked WenChou when he tried to help LWJ and JinLing’s father who were surrounded by the Wen clan in the cave. If WWX wasn’t trying to be a hero at that time, the Wen clan wouldn’t have targeted the Jiang clan and JC’s parents would have still be alive. To JC, WWX would rather help a stranger than lay low for the safety of the clan. That’s why JC hates LWJ very much and why he felt WWX betrayed him.

Afterwards, JC thought WWX would stay by his side since his parents were gone to help rebuild the clan. But WWX chooses to protect the remaining Wen clan instead. Second betrayal there. WWX broke his promise and JC started hating him for it. Now that the golden core was given by WWX, JC hates that he couldn’t despise WWX anymore.

Think it like having a Mafia Boss mistakenly ordered for your whole family to be killed and later gave you a heart transplant to keep you alive. Should you hate or not hate? I think this is what JC is currently feeling right now…

Thanks so much for the chapter!! 💕💕 Can’t wait to read the ending but still have mixed feelings that the story would end in a few chaps more 😭😭

  13. I needed to mentally prepare myself for this chapter cause I knew I’d get teary eyed… and I did… even though I got spoiled beforehand… fml

  14. Inhate Jiang Cheng fro beginning. He was pitiful person. A heir of a sect with low esteem and very insecure person. With that attitude he never qualified as any leader. He never see from other people pov or look at things for the bright side. Always feeling sorrow for himself. What a selfish and spoiled man, the weakest of all.
