Chapter 32: Go Away

He Ye led Zhou Kai upstairs to the bedroom.

Zhou Kai stood by the door, watching as He Ye took out an old, dirty, and heavy military coat from the antique wardrobe. His heart sank.

As He Ye passed by him and went out, he said, “I’ll wake you up when it’s dawn.”

Zhou Kai didn’t respond, his gaze following He Ye. He watched He Ye walk to the opposite side, to what could hardly be called a living room, and lie down on the long bench that was too narrow for He Ye. He casually covered himself with the military coat, looking like he intended to sleep there.

Leaning against the door frame, Zhou Kai stared at He Ye’s back, hidden in the darkness, thinking about He Ye’s words about not liking him and it not being worth it, and he felt a pain in his heart. Covering his heart didn’t quite relieve the pain, so Zhou Kai gritted his teeth, clenched his fist, and punched it a few times before his legs went weak and he slowly slid to the ground. Cradling his head in his hands, Zhou Kai opened his mouth but couldn’t cry.

Curled up on the uneven bench, He Ye stared at the cracks in the backrest, unblinking. His eyes ached and became sore, and after a while, a few tears squeezed out and fell onto the chair.

He Ye smiled bitterly and painfully. He hated and despised himself, hated himself for not realizing sooner that Zhou Kai had approached him with affection. And he hated himself for not being able to treat Zhou Kai as coldly as he treated others. After warning him not to get involved, he couldn’t help but tease him, making him elated and secretly proud, only to tell him that it was impossible and give him a deep wound, watching him cry and bleed.

Didn’t he have a heart?

Didn’t he say that as long as he had money, he could survive?

Couldn’t he be ruthless and heartless?

What was he doing now?

He Ye asked himself: What was the point of being so miserable?

Struggling to get up from the ground, Zhou Kai turned off the light and shuffled towards the bed step by step in the darkness.

The bed still bore the traces and the scent of his and He Ye’s wild passion, and now it felt like a cold and cruel wind, tearing at Zhou Kai.

Climbing onto the bed, Zhou Kai wrapped himself in the blanket, trying to keep himself warm.

Outside, as the room fell silent, He Ye also closed his red and sore eyes tightly.

Although he said he would wake the other person up at dawn, when dawn arrived, He Ye was sitting on the bench, staring blankly at the room.

Zhou Kai was woken up by the heat. He fluttered his eyes and kicked at the blanket but couldn’t get it off. When he opened his eyes and saw the familiar room, his nose twitched and he quickly bit his lip to stop himself from crying. He sat up and threw off the covers, and his sweaty body shivered against the cool air. He got out of bed, his head heavy, and almost fell forward onto the floor.

Supporting his heavy head, Zhou Kai walked out of the bedroom and into the living room. In the living room, there was only the military coat, half-fallen on the floor, and no one else.

Zhou Kai stood there for a while, waiting for the sunlight coming in through the window to reach the coat before turning around and walking back. He swallowed hard and picked up his belongings.

He remembered that he had taken off his socks in the bathroom last night, so he went in and got them, not caring that they were wet, and stuffed them into his backpack.

He went downstairs, and the door that Zhou Kai had closed was now open. Nothing else could stop him. Zhou Kai opened the door, his eyes were dazzled by the sunlight outside, and after he stood steady, he went out and closed the door behind him.

The bicycle he had parked there last night was now the only one left. Zhou Kai walked over, put on his backpack, and turned the bicycle around.

He was leaving, leaving this place.

But as soon as he got on his bicycle, three loud motorcycles came around the corner, each carrying two people, heading straight towards him.

Zhou Kai pressed the brakes and looked up at the six people who clearly didn’t look like good people, and his heart sank.

Turning a corner on his bicycle, He Ye looked down at the breakfast hanging on the handlebars and raised his head, pedaling harder.

Although the breakfast shop was two streets away, it was still quick to get there through the back alleys. When He Ye went and came back, his mind was in a mess.

He kept asking himself why he didn’t wake Zhou Kai up and drive him away, but instead ran out to buy breakfast for Zhou Kai?

There was no answer.

He Ye couldn’t give himself an answer.

“If he could give, he wouldn’t have stayed up all night, wouldn’t have been so troubled, and wouldn’t have tortured himself like this.”

Entering the alley, He Ye took a long, deep breath and then exhaled quickly. He straightened up and gripped the handlebars of his bike, unaware of the anticipation that was involuntarily rising in his heart.

But that anticipation turned into a bone-chilling coldness when he heard Zhou Kai shout, “Fuck you! What are you doing? Stop!”

The sight that met his eyes as he turned the corner caused He Ye’s pupils to constrict rapidly. He almost jumped off his bike, his long legs taking a stride and landing him on the ground. The bike fell to the side, and the soy milk that had been placed in a bag exploded on the ground.

The man who had Zhou Kai pinned against the wall and was choking him turned his head at the sound, but before he could react, He Ye grabbed his shoulder and pulled hard, punching him in the cheek and knocking him to the ground.

The man got up, his face bruised on both sides, one side more severely than the other. He stood up and gritted his teeth, looking menacingly at He Ye, but he was stopped by his companions.

With a heart pounding in fear, He Ye’s face remained calm and unruffled. He stood in front of Zhou Kai, shielding him, and looked at the four people who had sprayed paint on his door and wall. The man he had punched also walked over to the leader, spitting blood on the ground, looking unconvinced.

With a cold sneer, He Ye looked at the leader.

The debt collector leader looked nonchalant, playing with the spray paint can in his hand, and raised his chin at He Ye, saying, “Long time no see, I’ve missed you a little. Ye, where have you been making a fortune these past few months?”

Rubbing his neck, which was sore from being choked, Zhou Kai stood behind He Ye, gritting his teeth and watching the group of people. He had seen firsthand how hateful and terrifying these loan sharks could be.

Zhou Kai looked back at He Ye, who was protecting him, and his heart ached.

He thought that He Ye was so young at that time when he encountered these people. How difficult it must have been for him.

It was so difficult, yet he didn’t let anyone sympathize with him, he was so stubborn, it was infuriating.

Glancing at Zhou Kai from the corner of his eye, He Ye put his hands in his pockets and walked forward, standing in front of the leader. His voice was cold, “No need to miss me, just think about my money.”

The leader was stunned for a moment, then he scrutinized He Ye, judging whether what he said was true or false.

He Ye let him look, his face remaining cold and indifferent. He looked at the man, as contemptuous as if he were looking at trash, “Extortion, once or twice is fine. But if you do it too much, maybe the next one to get eaten… will be yourself.”

The leader nodded and laughed, pointing at He Ye with his finger.

He Ye scanned the five people he had brought with him. They were all familiar faces. Not all of them were as reckless as the one He Ye had hit; after all, it was too troublesome to make a big fuss and attract the police.

“Ye, you’re really something.”

The leader smashed the spray paint can against the wall, gave He Ye a thumbs-up, and held his gaze for a few seconds before turning to his motorcycle.

Seeing that their leader was leaving, the other small fry imitated him and threw away their spray paint cans. The one who hadn’t taken a spray paint can and had been suppressing Zhou Kai spat on the ground again before walking over and getting on his motorcycle.

They had come in a noisy manner and left in a noisy manner.

Zhou Kai frowned as he watched the motorcycles turn the corner and the sound of their engines faded, and then he looked at the several spray paint cans on the ground, his mind a little confused.

He Ye turned around and looked at Zhou Kai, who still looked confused.

He Ye looked Zhou Kai up and down, making sure he wasn’t injured before letting out the breath he had been holding.

Zhou Kai came to his senses and asked He Ye, “Are they always like this? They come here to threaten you when they don’t get their money?” He didn’t really need to ask because the facts were clear.

Zhou Kai had only heard about it before, he had never seen it. Hearing about it made him feel bad, and now that he had seen it, he felt even worse.

He Ye didn’t answer him, he just said, “Go back, go back to your house, don’t come here anymore.”

“You saw…”

“Go back, Zhou Kai.”

Clenching his fist, He Ye stared at Zhou Kai, who was looking up at him with a pale, shocked, and fearful expression, for a long time before turning around to pick up the spray paint cans one by one from the ground.

As he bent down, he looked so helpless and lonely.

Zhou Kai looked at He Ye, his throat choked by He Ye’s words. He reached for the handlebar and got on his bike as He Ye walked over to open the door. As he passed He Ye’s fallen bicycle, Zhou Kai looked at the spilled soy milk and the dirty bun that had fallen out, and he couldn’t help but burst into tears, his vision blurred.

He Ye faced the keyhole, inserted it but couldn’t turn it. He threw the spray paint cans back on the ground, slammed his fist against the door, and crouched down, burying his head in his hands.
