Chapter 6: Out of Control

The room still held a slight mist from having just run the shower. Lu Xingye had considerable strength as an out-of-control alpha. He tightly grasped Lyss’ waist, and with Lyss’ robe already somewhat loose around the waist, the combination caused the expected outcome—the snow-white robe slid down a bit from Lyss’ shoulders.
Lu Xingye’s breath was already spraying onto Lyss’ shoulder, about to reach the back of his neck, as Lu Xingye abruptly stopped. His expression changed from the prior frenzy to extreme agony. It seemed like reason and instinct were locked in a struggle within his brain.
Previously, when there were still a few steps between them, Lu Xingye almost couldn’t resist Lyss’ pheromones. Now, with a distance of less than ten centimeters between him and Lyss’ nape, the pheromones from a top-tier omega demanded alpha submission to desire in an irresistible manner.
An average alpha might have long been conquered by instinct at this moment. Although Lu Xingye was exceptional, being young and having hardly encountered omega pheromones in eighteen years, he used all his rationality to regain clarity only momentarily. But even that moment was enough.
For a top-notch hunter, a momentary pause could determine life or death. During Lu Xingye’s hesitation, a hand suddenly rose and tightly grasped Lu Xingye’s neck. Those hands with distinct knuckles, a surprising strength, and slender fingers pressed against Lu Xingye’s neck, exuding a cruel beauty.
Lyss quietly gazed at the person in front of them with golden eyes until the choking sensation gradually restored Lu Xingye’s reason.
“——!” Lu Xingye had never felt so close to death. A lack of oxygen caused his brain to momentarily abandon its reproductive instincts, giving him a moment of clarity. He struggled with all his might, breaking free from Lyss’ restraint. His half-wet ears stood straight, and he retreated several steps back, coughing uncontrollably only stopping when reaching the doorway.
Unaffected by the recent incident, Lyss contemplated for a moment before speaking, “It seems the ability to smell pheromones does indeed depend on distance.”
Lu Xingye was still coughing and trying to catch his breath while half kneeling on the ground. After a while he struggled to speak, “I’m sorry…”
“It’s okay, I’m the one who should apologize,” Lyss replied casually. “It’s an alpha’s nature, not your fault, and you couldn’t harm me. It was an emergency, are you all right?”
Lyss spoke simply, seemingly unperturbed by the recent incident, displaying a demeanor as if not considering Lu Xingye a threat.
Fortunately, Lu Xingye didn’t have the typical alpha’s excessive pride. Rubbing his neck while forcing a smile, he looked up. “Honestly, for a moment, I thought I was about to…”
He stopped halfway through, widened his eyes slightly, his half-dried ears twitched twice, and his cheeks flushed instantly.
Seeing his reaction, Lyss asked, “About to what?”
Even though Lu Xingye hadn’t dealt with omegas in his eighteen years, he realized something was off. He didn’t even have the energy to glance at the code on Lyss’ clavicle. Instead, he hurriedly averted his gaze. “…You should put your clothes back on first.”
Lyss was puzzled by his response and looked down, noticing that although the lower part of the robe was still decent, the upper part had slipped down from his shoulders.
Unlike Lu Xingye, who seemed desperate to turn away, Lyss had no reaction. He casually adjusted the robe, saying, “Tomorrow is a day off; you’ll come with me to the medical center at the military base.”
Lu Xingye didn’t immediately agree but frowned, looking concerned and not answering right away.
“What’s wrong?” Lyss asked, puzzled.
“I’m an adult alpha, and while you as an omega might not care about what just happened, if you weren’t an omega capable of subduing me, the consequences could have been disastrous. So… I think it might not be suitable for me to stay here,” Lu Xingye said seriously. “I genuinely want to understand how you knew my identity and consider taking certain measures to avoid future problems, but… not in this manner.”
“No need for formalities,” Lyss replied without directly addressing Lu Xingye’s words. Instead, he walked toward him.
Lu Xingye felt an alarm ringing in his head. The marks on his neck hadn’t fully faded, and he hastily stood up, saying, “Wait, please don’t come closer. I’m afraid…”
“Afraid of what?” Lyss walked to the door, looking at Lu Xingye, who was within arm’s reach. “Can you still smell my pheromones?”
“…Can you control your pheromones?” Lu Xingye hesitated. “You previously said your pheromones were unstable.”
“Don’t easily believe what others say,” Lyss said, looking into Lu Xingye’s eyes. “You know only what they want you to know. And… what was told to you earlier wasn’t said by me personally. Why did you believe the words of those guards immediately?”
Lu Xingye was taken aback, realizing that everything he knew about Lyss came from those guards. Lyss had merely nodded, never even uttering a word.
Faced with his inquiries, Lyss either refused to answer or avoided the question. There seemed to be no blatant loopholes in his words, implying either his unwillingness to lie or his exceptional deceit to the point where even the phrase “I will never lie to you” might be false.
Lu Xingye looked at Lyss, and after a few seconds of eye contact, it dawned on him. “Your apparent pheromone imbalance was to intentionally give some people a handle on you?”
There was a hint of surprise in Lyss’ eyes, but he praised Lu Xingye, saying, “Not bad, you’re smart.”
“Compared to the Chief, I’m probably just a primitive man,” Lu Xingye self-deprecatingly said a few words, finally feeling relieved. “But since you can control it, please don’t test me with such things in the future. Judging by that, you needing an alpha by your side is also false, isn’t it?”
“It’s not a test,” Lyss shook her head. “Part of what they told you about me before is correct; my estrus period is indeed unstable, but due to a special pheromone, most alphas can’t smell it, hence the apparent imbalance. The need for an alpha is also true, but me bringing you back… it’s not entirely because of that, you should understand.”
Lu Xingye didn’t say anything further; he just suddenly felt a chill. In his eighteen years, he had witnessed countless deaths and betrayals, even intense, bone-deep hatred, but never something as deceptive, smiling yet treacherous as this. He couldn’t help but sigh, “I feel like whether I can survive until your next estrus period is a question.”
“Are you planning to back out?” Lyss asked.
“My mother once told me, ‘A gentleman’s word is as weighty as a thousand gold.’ Unless I die, what I’ve said will be fulfilled. I’m just worried that if I die… there are some things I won’t be able to complete.”
“You love your mother very much,” Lyss said seemingly casually. “I won’t deceive you; you’ll get everything you want, but not now.”
“I believe everything else, but that last sentence…” Lu Xingye chuckled. “You clearly just lied to me. Do you even find that statement believable?”
“I didn’t lie to you,” Lyss looked earnestly into Lu Xingye’s eyes, hinting at something. “I never lie; you were just confused by the situation at that time. The one deceiving you wasn’t me; you can think back.”
This statement was rather peculiar. Lu Xingye furrowed his brow, but he was led by Lyss to recall the events that had occurred before. As he reminisced, he realized that Lyss was right. Everything he knew about the other person was from those few guards who had informed him, and Lyss had merely nodded, never uttered a syllable.
When faced with his inquiries, Lyss either answered or declined, and there seemed to be no obvious flaws in his words. This meant either the other party was unwilling to lie to him, or their deceit technique was unparalleled, perhaps to the extent that even the statement “I will never lie to you” was a lie.
Lu Xingye looked at Lyss who was close by, this person holding too many mysteries. It was all too complex, and his brain was feeling a bit overloaded.
“Do you still want to leave now?” Lyss asked.
“Do you want me to stay that much…” Lu Xingye couldn’t help but entertain the idea for a moment, just a moment, then abruptly stopped, “Nevermind. Aren’t you going to the medical center tomorrow? Get some rest; the bathroom doesn’t need your concern, I’ll take care of it.”
“Okay,” Lyss replied faintly. “Go to the hospital at eight in the morning tomorrow; don’t oversleep.”
After setting the time, Lyss turned and went back to the bedroom, having a dreamless night. In contrast, Lu Xingye didn’t sleep as well. Too much had happened in one day, and the gears of fate that had been stagnant for so long seemed to have started turning from the moment Lyss appeared. Too many things left Lu Xingye’s brain in a tangle. He thought for a long time but couldn’t come up with anything, only hearing his own noticeably accelerated heartbeat.
An eighteen-year-old, even one burdened with a hatred veiled in darkness, still easily succumbed to emotions. Even though he knew clearly that the other party understood they were using him, even though he felt this surge of emotions was absurd, the human heart isn’t controlled by the brain; a young person’s feelings always come without warning and spread like wildfire.
The next morning at seven, Lyss woke up without any sign of sleepiness. He got up and walked out of the bedroom, noticing some noise coming from the kitchen. The living room was filled with an aroma that Lyss had never encountered before.
Since the house was renovated, the kitchen had been rarely used. In the interstellar age, while people enjoyed a more diverse entertainment life, only the Sericans seemed to persist in cooking, while most people opted for more convenient and nourishing nutrient pastes or fluids. Lyss was among those people.
But Lu Xingye’s mother seemed to be Serican? With curiosity in mind, for the first time in his life, Lyss didn’t start with washing up but instead went to the kitchen.
Standing at the doorway, he saw Lu Xingye busying himself with something, and there were many things in the kitchen that Lyss had never seen before.
“What are you doing?” Lyss spoke up.
Lu Xingye was startled, quickly turned around, and upon seeing Lyss, relaxed a bit. His tone carried a hint of helplessness, “Chief, how come you move so quietly?”
“Are these things you bought?” Lyss didn’t answer his question.
Lu Xingye had somewhat figured out Lyss’ temperament; this person seemed to really only speak the truth. If faced with something he didn’t want to answer, he would either beat around the bush or directly say he couldn’t tell at the moment. He was extremely honest with a touch of cuteness in his honesty.
“Yeah, they are,” Lu Xingye replied after some thought, then turned back to continue frying dumplings. “Sorry about yesterday; although you didn’t mind, I still want to make a meal as a sincere apology. But your kitchen here, compared to your bathroom, even a primitive cave has more kitchenware. I had to order some basic kitchenware hastily; I hope you don’t mind.”
Facing Lu Xingye’s teasing about his house, Lyss not only didn’t stop him but explained, “You don’t need to apologize. I didn’t suffer any substantial harm. But that bruise on your neck is still there.”
“That’s deserved,” Lu Xingye cursed himself without any politeness. “The Chief is results-oriented; if I haven’t really done something to you, you always feel like it’s okay. But sometimes the result isn’t important; the process is.”
Hearing this statement, seemingly engraved in his DNA, Lyss subconsciously responded, “A process without results has no meaning.”
“I don’t like that saying,” Lu Xingye showed no respect in his conversation with the Chief as he should. “For example, in love, even without results, you can’t deny the unforgettable process. It’s like a moth to a flame; no result, but glorious.”
“Love without results is a failure,” Lyss calmly rebutted. “The unforgettable part is just one’s own foolishness… Hmm—”
As Lyss spoke halfway, Lu Xingye couldn’t stand it and picked up a cooled dumpling, stuffing it into the other’s unfeeling mouth.
“Chief, how can a mouth that’s thirty-six degrees say something so cold?” Lu Xingye raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never been in love; it’s just a metaphor. You’re so decisive; have you been hurt in love?”
Lu Xingye deliberately used the title to tease Lyss, speaking with a hint of playfulness, not entirely serious.
No one had ever dared to interrupt Lyss, let alone in this manner. When that slightly warm yet somewhat firm thing was inserted into his mouth, Lyss was rarely stunned. Once he regained his senses, his first reaction was to spit it out. Although he was almost impossible to be poisoned, as the Chief of the Triss Federation, not eating food with an unknown origin was basic professional etiquette.
For some reason, Lyss bit open the slightly hard shell of the dumpling Lu Xingye had given him. The crispy shell, along with the meat filling bursting with savory and salty flavors, surprised him. Lu Xingye watched as Lyss chewed on the food, remaining silent, and found himself thinking: how obedient.
Lu Xingye eagerly asked, “How is it? Is it tasty…”
But before he finished speaking, Lu Xingye paused—after Lyss swallowed the dumpling, he gently licked his lips with a bright red tongue. His expression remained cold and aloof, contrasting sharply with the action, a huge contrast that left Lu Xingye speechless.
“I haven’t had a mate, let alone been in love.” Despite Lyss’ unawareness, he earnestly commented, “Very delicious; I’ve never eaten anything this delicious.”
Lu Xingye initially just wanted a positive response, but when he unexpectedly heard Lyss’ sincere answer and such high praise, he didn’t know how to respond.
He seemed to overlook one thing—the fact that, despite his many years as an alpha wandering in the interstellar darkness, he was still a blank slate, which was as absurd as Lyss’ lack of romantic experiences.
“Thank you for troubling yourself; I’ll go freshen up,” Lyss said without finding any fault in his previous statement. “Later, send me the bill for the kitchenware; I’ll reimburse you.”
“No need, it’s not worth much,” Lu Xingye quickly said, having forgotten his earlier intention to save money. Lyss didn’t insist either and turned to go freshen up.
After they finished breakfast, they deliberated on what transportation to take, and finally, when Lyss learned that Lu Xingye could pilot a mimetic mecha, he insisted on using that.
Unable to convince him otherwise, Lu Xingye ended up piloting the mimetic mecha he retrieved from the garage, carrying Lyss toward the military base.
The mecha was quite eye-catching, to the extent that before they even landed on the military base’s helipad, countless people were watching. When they saw that it was Lyss and a handsome young alpha descending, almost everyone present was astonished.
Before they could scrutinize closely, the two disappeared from everyone’s sight.
Lyss brought Lu Xingye to the medical center, floating on a hoverboard to the door of the specific doctor he had in mind. The door recognized Lyss’ identity; both of them stepped off the hoverboard and went in.
“Chief, good day. You seem to have improved a lot,” the doctor, who had just finished speaking, turned to see the young alpha behind Lyss and the blatant fingerprints on his neck.
The doctor’s words stuck in his throat, and then, with professional discretion, he cautiously looked at Lyss. Seeing the Chief’s composed demeanor, he couldn’t help but say, “Um, Chief, before your next estrus period arrives, intimacy is allowed but try not to make it too intense or frequent. It might lead to a delay or postponement of your estrus period, and in any case, it’ll have a negative impact on you. Although this young mate of yours is in the prime of his youth… it’s better to restrain yourself a bit.”
The author has something to say:
Who can control their reason from being attracted to the Chief? Mr. Lu, can you?
Mr. Lu: I’m sorry, I can’t. I’ve already thought of names for our future daughters.
Chief: What are they?
Mr. Lu: ——?! Are you willing to have children?!

Loving this, and the Author’s closing comments.
