I (or members in ExR) will ask one question daily to see everyone’s opinion on it.
The first question of this series is:
- How did you get into yaoi/danmei/BL?
Addis’ answer: I started reading shounen-ai back in 2012 because I read all of the release shojo and josei that I could find. I wanted to find something with a different plot and stumbled upon Junjo Romantica and Loveless.
Blame Untamed and Netflix for all my sins… and then blame LMW for further burying me into the pit
After watching The Untamed I read GDC and that’s how I got here.
As a respected elder (jk, mostly) I was introduced to yaoi by a girl at my boarding school who had binders of printed anime fanfic way back in the 90s. More recently, I found danmei through Word of Honor on Netflix. I’d never read anything Chinese before that, partially due to access.
Ahahaha, i been reading yaoi since 2012/2013 k was young at that time like 12 years old but first i started with books my mon at that time had. She love a good romance, and she had a gay romance in the middle of the other’s stories. And i was a little obsessed with books at that time so i read that one.
After that came the manga, a few years later the webcomic, and about 3/4 years ago the novel and the drama.
I gotta confess I’m still a little obsessed with this stories 😁😁😁
Oh dear, the untamed got me into BL. I watched not knowing it was a BL but I was already a fan of Asian films and series and someone told me it is a book and I tracked it down to this page, I got hooked then I read LMW and I was gone for life…must be my 5th time reading LMW now and am looking for recs that are similar..
I got into BL novels because I stumbled upon a yaoi manga while searching for manga and because at that time there were very few translated yaoi manga I searched for other BL sources and read my first BL novel, and I am glad I did.
It was at that time that 2gether thai series were really popular. I was curious but thought it was cringe. I ran out of dramas to watch and so i decided to watch it. And i actually liked it and after i started searching things related to BL and so on. I saw a video related to The Untamed so i decided to watch the whole series(i was actually pretty hesitant bec. it was 50 ep long) then it was really good so i read the novel and i can no longer watched straight dramas,i am reading up until now
I originally love anime and manga..at some point I got bored and stressed reading shoujo and josei manga that I stumbled upon a yaoi manga that made me shock and I close it then reading it the next day and now i become a fujoshi..🤭🤭 later i just kinda want to know what other bl is there and stumbled upon mdzs manhua and i don’t get it at first so i drop it..and later i get to know that mdzs has a novel that made me come here and later made me start reading legendary wife🤭🤭🤭🤭
In 2005 (i had 20 years old), i searched the japan group Porno graffiti, and in my research, i saw a movie who was called Sensitive Pornograph, so i clicked…Well, i didn’t know that yaoi exist before that…And it was love at first sight !!!
2020, my best friend was watching UWMA and I got curious because I didn’t know you could actually watch BL. I had only been reading wattpad BL stories, not knowing just how huge the world of BL was. My bestie also introduced me to Addicted and after knowing that the was a book/novel I looked everywhere for it and well, from then on I started reading and watching yaoi and BL. Been the best years of my life honestly.
I started by reading GDC, which, at the time, I didn’t know was a danmei. After that, I liked it so much I began trying to find similar works. The second one I read was LMW.
My daughter! She had me read Untamed and I jumped into this rabbit hole.
Tbh I think I got into bl just over 3 years ago after I had a massive stroke that left my left side paralyzed. Though I’ve recovered some, bl has become my obsession. It’s to the point that I find any bxg story boring and generic. I see and live that so I’d rather not read it too.
When I was 13, my sister introduced me to the ‘Last Herald Mage’ trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. That was 19 years ago and I’ve been obsessed ever since.
I discovered chinese novels on wattpad and started reading reincarnation novels like Genius Doctor: Black Belly Miss and The Good for Nothing Seventh Young Lady(i had lots of free time). After finishing i started branching out and discovered Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil. And then, there was none. I rest my case.
I’ve been watching anime as far as I can remember and on my college years I discovered the junjou romantica series. Rewatched it many times but seems like the scenes there is not enough for me which lead me to committing more sins, hahaha, I enjoyed reading and watching BL/Yaoi more than the shoujo manga/anime.And later on watched some clips of GDC but it’s on Chinese and on my pursuit happiness I stumble upon your site which at that time you just completed the translation of the series. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I started reading BL out of sheer curiosity and realized that the storylines were really good.
One of the novels that I was reading before (around 2017-2018) suddenly introduced a character in the third book who’s…a pan, IG? Whatever, but that character pursues another from the first book and I thought that they’re cute. That’s the start, but I can say that I am pretty much testing the waters there and it really starts on 2019 where I watched a Thai BL (LBC) and now I can’t get out, not that I am planning to lol.

honestly, same. I was looking for something new and stumbled on Junjo Romantica.
I used to read manga back in high school (around 2011) then I stumbled upon the manhwa of Douluo Dalu (combat continent) the 1st book manhwa. Updates was slow and I’m so interested that I searched it’s novel. Then I went in the world of LN lmao learning about novelupdates made me stumble upon LMW which introduced me to this website where I found all kinds of treasure.
I was in highschool 16 years old 2010, I was reading many mangas n watching many anime then suddenly I found junjou romantica and sensitive pornograph anime.. then after that.. yeahh I’ve become what people call rotten girl 🤣🤣
At a young age where the internet wasn’t strictly regulated and that Asian copyrights weren’t administered harshley. I came across manga that had yaoi did not know what it was at the time but the bottom was drawn very effiminatly so yeah one thing led to another.
I accidentally discovered it
I was reading those BG novels/stories when I accidentally clicked open a recommended BL story. It clicked and then I started searching for the same genre at Wattpad and I read a few hundred(?) stories before I tried the site I usually spend time, other than Wattpad, to see if there are BL novels present. RWSB is the first rebirth and Chinese-English translated novel I read. Then this continued until it balecame an obsession. So yeah.
Started in 2018 I was watching a thai drama and wasn’t satisfied with the ending and everyone told me the novel was better so I read that one and I’ve been hooked since lol so now I read bl,watch it and any asian drama that come my way ,Started with manga last year too
