Chapter 2: Abyssal Species

Translated by Addis of Exiled Rebels Scanlations

As if aware of the threat, the gray-skinned monster let go of its hand and sprang up. John stopped in front of it, pivoted, and chased it down. His reflexes were amazing, but Coraci was not surprised, just rubbed his neck and calmly moved aside.

John grabbed the monster. It felt like a human, but the power under its skin was as fierce as fire. He pushed the monster and slammed it into a wall. The monster stared at John, trying to stop him with the power of suggestion. John could feel that the other was trying to control his mind, but it didn’t succeed. As Coraci said, this creature was not very strong.

The bat wings of the monster kept flapping, but it couldn’t get rid of John’s hand. It was quite shocked. It didn’t expect that this guy, who looked like a human being, was so powerful that it couldn’t fly up.

Coraci left the room, keeping close to the wall, and ran to the wall with the red rope in the hallway. At this time, the monster cut its finger with its canines, and a red rope of the same kind rushed towards John as if it were alive.

It was not real rope, but blood of the monster, which obeyed its master’s command and was ready to coil around the neck of the enemy like a snake.

John stepped back and grabbed the blood rope. After the monster broke free of John’s grip, it decided to give up the tough guy and chase Coraci instead. However, before it could fly ten feet, it was pulled by its ankle and dragged to the ground. John used a lot of energy, and the floor shook. He put his foot on the monster’s stomach and looked at it in disgust. The naked lower part of the body was finally weak.

“My god, I can’t dream of such luck.” John grabbed the rope that kept twisting and struggling, stretched it with both hands and crushed it into a ball–and then ate it like it was a snack.

The monster’s expression could be described as frightened.

“Demon’s blood…” John licked his lips and licked off the red remaining on his fingertips. “It’s fantastic. If I tell my family, they’ll think I’m crazy…”

The monster couldn’t escape. He screamed and watched John slowly squat down, put his knees against its chest and abdomen, and grasped its head with his powerful palm.

Coraci stood by the wall and tried to tear off the red rope from every possible angle, but never succeeded. Then John came over, reached for the rope and ate it like eating spaghetti. At that moment, John seemed to find that the rope was bound to something, even though he could not see it.

“You didn’t kill him, did you? That monster,” Coraci asked.

John, embarrassed, didn’t answer the question, but questioned, “When did you notice I wasn’t human?”

“You didn’t kill him, did you? I don’t have the right to…” Coraci hurried back to the room and saw the monster lying unconscious on the ground. “That’s great.”

“You can see it’s not dead?” John followed.

“I can see that.” Coraci took a piece of chalk from his pocket and started writing around the monster. It seemed to be a so-called rune or magic circle, similar to what John had seen in fantasy movies and video games.

Coraci’s skill was as practiced as his everyday writing, and his speed was very fast. Every letter was meticulous. After writing on the ground, he also drew small runes on the monster’s forehead and hands.

“When did you notice I was not human?” John asked again, but Coraci didn’t immediately answer.

After drawing the magic circle, Coraci stood up and said to the air, “Okay. You go and see the other one.” Then he lowered his head slightly and said to John with an apologetic expression, “I’m sorry, it may make you feel uncomfortable. In fact, I found out from the first time I saw you. You are a bloodkin, aren’t you?”

John hadn’t been recognized for a long time. Since he came to this city to work as a freelance writer, whether he went to the supermarket, the bank and other places, or occasionally went to the bar to play or even passed a church… he was never recognized.

“How…? Because I got permission to walk in?” John asked.

Coraci chuckled and shook his head. Just as he was about to explain, there was another flash of lightning and a scream of pain came from downstairs. Coraci immediately ran down, followed by John.

“How on earth did you recognize me?” John was eager to know the answer. He didn’t feel any power in the author. If he knew how the other person could see through his identity, he could know how to hide it better in the future.

Coraci said to him, “It’s a long story. I’ll explain it later. Sir, are you in a coven or are you wild?”

“What?”

“Do you belong to a large family, or do you live freely with some relatives and friends?”

John thought the term ‘wild’ was too cute, like talking about domestic or feral cats. Coraci seemed to be an ordinary human being, but he still had no fear after he knew his identity, which gave John an indescribable feeling.

“I have parents and a sister,” John said. “My sister was changed after an accident more than thirty years ago… Before she died, she was transformed and adopted by my mother, so they took her to live in the countryside, and I worked in the city alone.”

The girl had still been young and needed to be educated, and she had no defense against the sun. Coraci nodded with understanding.

As they reached the second floor, there was a scream and a struggle in the room that John had observed before.

“What you saw just now, sir, is an incubus,” Coraci said. “It’s a demon, and some people call it that more directly.”

“Demon?” John was taken aback. A long time ago, he had heard about demons. At that time, people were afraid of creatures in the dark, worried that demons would manipulate them and suck away their lives at night.

“But I heard that they are demons who appear as beautiful women…” John said.

Coraci said, “Mn, the common form is called a succubus, which looks like a beautiful woman. Because of his male appearance, an incubus is much weaker than his female counterpart. The one I neglected just now, I shouldn’t have tried to talk to it. It made me think it was a mortal-born species, so I used a relatively thin tie… but it’s actually an Abyssal species.”

“What are mortal-born species and Abyssal species?”

“Corresponds to the demon’s origin,” Coraci pointed to a door in the corridor. “Abyssal species refers to demons who originally lived in the demon realm and came to human society by using some small tricks or fissures between the two boundaries. Inside there is a female demon, she is an Abyssal species, and she is struggling in a confinement array. The mortal-born species refers to those directly born on Earth. “

“Demons born on Earth?” John was surprised. “Oh, my god, how could it be? A demon! Are they really demons? Not from radiation mutation?”

Coraci looked at him with a smile, “Are you really a bloodkin? Are you really not a radiation mutant?”

“It’s not the same,” John said. “The bloodkin has existed since ancient times. It’s very scientific, but demons and so on… It’s fantastical.”

Coraci laughed. “Yeah, you all think you’re scientific…even you wild ones. Sorry, no offense. I mean, the blood clan in charge will learn the knowledge of dark creatures and basic magic theory, and will also learn the scientific common sense of contemporary society. Of course, it’s not too late for you to understand. “

“I really don’t want to know…” John frowned. “What did that monster want to do to you? There’s another one in the room ahead?”

“It wants to control me, suck away my life by kissing and making love,” Coraci said without hesitation. “The Abyssal demon in the room ahead would do the same. An informant nearby found her and controlled her with a short-lived drug, so I had a chance to tie her down. She’s so strong that we can’t deal with her for the time being. We have to wait for the professionals to come.”

“Informant?” John heard a word commonly heard in police movies.

Coraci spoke to the air again, “Hai Jiu, bring me a new filing form.”

“Who are you talking to?” John asked.

Coraci smiled and made a strange gesture with his hands. In the air around him appeared two figures, both translucent, one in a long white dress and the other in a black tuxedo. They had lost all their facial features, leaving only dry bone-white skin and skeletal frames, and their coloring was very dark, like they were standing in the shadows.

John stepped back in fear and clung to the railing.

“This is Ms. Hai Jiu and Mr. Wu Jiu,” Coraci said. “Mr. Lockland, please don’t be surprised. You’re kindred, aren’t you? I’m just a human being. I didn’t look so scared when I saw you.”

“But… But… They…” John watched Hai Jiu drift to another room, as if to get what Coraci wanted. He was so surprised that he couldn’t speak clearly, “They are ghosts!”

“The shadow entity can be understood as a ghost. They are my personal assistants,” Coraci said.

John remembered the purpose of his coming to the house — to dig into the story of the author Deville Coraci and his dead companions. He almost thought these two things were the souls of the dead, but they were not…. Where is the other one?

Hai Jiu floated back with a document envelope and handed it to Coraci. Coraci took out a form that was several pages long from the kraft envelope and handed it to John.

“This is for a new filing, sir. Please fill it out over there.”

“Why? What is this?” John saw that the title of the form read [Registration and Filing Form – Unthreatening Creature Protection Association – 2013 edition].

“It’s similar to your Social Security number.”

“I don’t have a Social Security number…”

“You do now,” Coraci said. “Sir, before any accidents happen, I asked you before why you were here. I thought you were looking for the Association, but it was awkward to bring up. You are wild and not registered, so register now.”

John glanced at the first few items of the form, including name, gender and family members. The age column was divided into two items: the actual age and the social identity age; and there were places to fill in the human identity race and biological race. He was just about to ask what was the difference when there was a more piercing sound from the room at the end of the corridor. Along with a thunderbolt outside, there was a burst of red light inside.

“She wants to break free…” Coraci pulled John back.

Wu Jiu uttered an incomprehensible grunt that John couldn’t understand, but Coraci could talk to him, “Yes, she’s powerful, stronger than any one we’ve ever met before. No, you don’t go in. She has a way to deal with an incorporeal body. It’s very dangerous.”

Hai Jiu seemed to be asking, and Coraci said, “If it’s really dangerous, we have to evacuate first. I’ll go outside the house and make an array.”

With that, he ran down the stairs, took out two raincoats from the cabinet at the door, threw one to John, opened the door and rushed into the rainstorm. John looked at the wide open door and the second floor room, which was constantly flashing red, wondering whether to stay inside or follow Coraci.

As a bloodkin, John was hidden in the city, doing odd jobs and freelance work. Every day, he wrote articles about curiosities or relationship dramas. He hid a pile of needles for blood collection at home. Life was easy and wonderful. He had not used his fangs on human beings for a long time, because it was easier for bloodkin to lose consciousness that way. He had basically regarded himself as an ordinary person.

Today he was just here to interview a horror writer. When the author showed strange actions over and over again, John felt it was weird, but he was not afraid because he knew that even if the author was really a murderer and showed his ferocity, he could handle it easily. But what was the situation now? There were two demons and two shadow secretaries in Coraci’s room, and Coraci himself seemed to be used to such things.

Just as John hesitated, Hai Jiu and Wu Jiu seemed to notice something and rushed to the second floor room. Before they could get close, the door was blasted open, and a strong fragrance was released along with the breath of the Abyssal creature.

“She’s out!” John yelled, wondering if Coraci could hear anything through the rain.

The succubus floated out of the corridor with a red whip in each hand. She was also naked, with long black hair and bat wings, but unlike the gray male demon, she had a pink and tender complexion like a human woman.

She dashed down from the second floor and John quickly stepped out of the door to avoid the swing of her whip. He could feel that the weapon was also made of blood. Her weapon had the power of blazing heat, which was much stronger than those ropes that were only snacks.

The heavy rain immediately drenched John’s clothes. The enchantress stared at him with her beautiful almond-shaped eyes and began to try mind control. John seemed to be able to see that with every step forward, she was eroding everything around her body with magic power, and the strong fragrance was approaching and teasing him like tentacles.

John didn’t know if ordinary humans could keep their minds under this temptation. As Coraci said, this demon was more powerful than the one just now. All of a sudden, the demon’s body became transparent and disappeared into the air, but John’s eyes still caught the track of her actions.

She probably saw that John was not a human being and was more difficult to deal with, so she decided to turn to the real human. The demon had just broken free from the confinement array, and her body was in urgent need of nourishment. She sensed where Coraci was, and was eager to take his life to feed herself and avenge his rudeness.

It took her less than a second to reach the stone steps behind the house. Coraci was crawling in the rain in his raincoat, writing something in silver paint.

Coraci wavered there, not knowing whether to escape first or to gamble to complete the last character. At this time, John, who had been following the demon closely, came over.

John jumped up and pushed the demon away. This monster was so powerful that he couldn’t suppress it completely as he had done previously. The demon strangled him with a whip, and the hot blood burned his skin. John didn’t let go. He could assess the damage to his body, which was not fatal to him, though it did hurt.

Coraci finished writing his characters, and after the last turn of the paint pen, a large transparent semicircle shield locked the whole house inside. Rain could still pass through it.

John pushed the demon against the wall of the shield. The bat wings, shoulders, and back of the demon touched the transparent barrier and made a ‘hiss’ sound, like it was sticking to a hot iron plate. It screamed and jerked, and the whip rolled around John’s leg and he accidentally hit the shield.

Pain spread through him, like he’d burned himself with an iron. John pushed the demon away from the barrier.

“It really hurts…” John had no time to examine the wound on his shoulder. He could probably imagine what the shield was. In short, it must be some kind of holy magic. Now he and the demon were trapped in it. Coraci, as a human, should be able to get out.

“What? Is the road too slippery?” Coraci’s voice came through the rain curtain, still inside the barrier, on the phone, “Hurry up! I’m going to die here!”

Before he finished, the demon turned toward him. John rushed up and entangled the demon, keeping it away from Coraci.

“Run!” In a brief gap while wrestling with the demon, John yelled to the writer, “You are in danger here! You are a human being!”

Coraci nodded and left the barrier – it seemed he was human. He ran to the stairs leading to the foot of the hill and craned his neck as if waiting for something.

John was more and more convinced of what the writer had said. He felt that he couldn’t beat this demon. If it weren’t for the blood of the male demon, he probably couldn’t have held on until now.

While fighting, John saw Coraci take off his raincoat and started writing on it. He hadn’t left. After dodging the demon’s whip, John rolled onto his feet and saw Coraci running back into the barrier again!

“John! Come here! Come on!” Coraci yelled to John and opened his raincoat.

John didn’t understand what he meant, but ran towards him. He thought the author had some useful magic, so he immediately ran into Coraci’s arms.

Due to the impact of speed, Coraci was hit and fell on his back. Then he immediately turned over, pressed John under him and wrapped him in the raincoat. John could feel the speed of the demon’s pursuit behind him. After being hugged by Coraci in his raincoat, his first thought was God, Coraci, what are you doing? It’s going to kill you.

Before he could break free, John heard a clear gunshot.

From The Unthreatening Creature Protection Association’s Guide to Unscientific Monsters:

Demons

These are basically what everyone expects when they think of demons…

In this setting, demons are divided into two types: Mortal-born demons and Abyssal demons. They live in a plane called the Abyss, reference to the DND monster illustration. This concept takes inspiration from the D&D Abyss Magic Realm, but it is not identical, and it is intentionally separate from religious notions of “hell.”

Mortal-born demons

These demons are born in human society. They have relatively weak abilities because they have never been immersed in Abyssal energy, giving them an innate disadvantage. Mortal-born demons have very limited sensitivity to demon magic; they must compensate by learning arcane human magic.

Their special abilities depend on their lineage and vary greatly between individuals. They are stronger than humans and many supernatural beings but are significantly weaker than the Abyssal species. Mortal-born demons can return to the Abyss, but they rarely do, as it is extremely dangerous for them there.

Abyssal demons

These demons are native to the Abyss itself and are far more powerful. Aside from low-level demons — small, often dim-witted fiends — even the weakest Abyssal demons usually surpass most of the mortal-born demons in terms of power.

Abyssal demons are ranked by strength, from weakest to strongest:

  1. Wingless
  2. Bat-winged
  3. Bone-winged
  4. Black-feathered

A demon’s strength depends heavily on its bloodline. Generally, only bone-winged or higher demons come from long-standing noble lineages.

Abyssal demons can live among humans, but doing so is extremely difficult. It is far more challenging for demons to navigate the human world than it is for humans to move between countries. Children born to Abyssal species in the human world automatically become mortal-born demons regardless of conception timing.

While in the human world, an Abyssal demon cannot use its full power; even though its power is reduced, it remains far more dangerous than any mortal-born demon. Even if their powers are roughly equivalent, it is extremely difficult for a human to directly kill an Abyssal demon. Containment or banishment is generally easier than outright extermination.

Why do demons come to the human world?

Simply put: for fun.

Lifespan:

  • Very low-level demons live only a few years. Some low-level demons live roughly as long as humans.
  • Lifespan for mortal-born demons and Abyssal demons depends on their bloodline and varies individually. Being mortal-born or Abyssal does not determine longevity.
