Without Fei Cheng as a human pillow, Nan HuaiLin didn’t sleep well at night. At 8 a.m., he was woken up by a phone call from Man Tianzhu.

“MWK just called me,” Man Tianzhu said. “And said they sent a driver to pick you up, which is pretty sweet.”

“Got it,” Nan HuaiLin responded.

After he hung up the phone, he lazed in bed for another two minutes, then Nan HuaiLin got up and went to take a shower. While he was blow-drying his hair, he heard the doorbell ring, so he wrapped up in his bathrobe and answered the door.

There were two beautiful young foreign girls standing outside the door.

“Hi, are you Mr. Nan HuaiLin?” One of the girls asked with a smile.

“I am.” Nan HuaiLin asked, “And you are?”

The girl smiled and said, “We are sales clerks at Amani. Your husband Mr. Fei Cheng ordered clothes and shoes for you, and entrusted us to deliver them to your home.”

Only then did Nan HuaiLin notice that both were carrying shopping bags in their hands. He originally planned to go to the nearby mall to buy a formal suit on his way out, but he hadn’t expected Fei Cheng would bring it to his door.

Nan HuaiLin got busy letting them in the door. The two girls put down their things and left. Nan HuaiLin took out all the things in the shopping bag, and laid them out on the bed.

A slim suit, a shirt, a pair of leather shoes, a tie, belt, cufflinks, a watch, and even underwear and socks.

Nan HuaiLin smiled and shook his head.

Just as he was getting dressed, the doorbell rang again.

Nan HuaiLin answered the door, and there was another stranger standing outside.

“Hello, I’m the delivery man from Five Guys Burger.” The young boy in uniform handed over two plastic bags. “Here’s the breakfast Mr. Fei Cheng ordered for you. Enjoy your meal.”

Nan HuaiLin took them, said thank you, and was about to close the door when he heard Man Tianzhu call out to him, so he replied and left the door open as he went inside.

Man Tianzhu came in, looked him up and down, and her eyes were full of amazement. “Wow, you really…You’re really…So, so good-looking today.”

Nan HuaiLin smiled, “Let’s eat breakfast.”

Man Tianzhu sat down and helped him put the burger, fries and coffee on the table. “Good for you. You’ve just been in New York for a day, and you’re ordering takeout.”

“I didn’t order it,” Nan HuaiLin said. “Fei Cheng did.”

Man Tianzhu was silent, “… I don’t even know if it’s breakfast or dog food.”

Halfway through breakfast, Man Tianzhu took a phone call. After she ended the call, she said to Nan HuaiLin, “MWK’s driver is already waiting in front of the hotel.”

Nan HuaiLin looked at the time. It wasn’t yet nine o’clock. He wiped his hands and said, “You eat a little longer. I’ll go brush my teeth.”

He had already brushed when he got up, and he had to brush again after breakfast. When they left the hotel, it was just nine o’clock.

Man Tianzhu called the driver, and spotted a black man in a suit waving at them from not far away. When they got into the car, Man Tianzhu chatted with the driver, while Nan HuaiLin looked down at his phone.

He messaged Fei Cheng: [Nice clothes. Good breakfast. I’m on my way to MWK.]

Fei Cheng replied quickly and sent a photo. In the photo, four baby dragons were squatting on the dining table eating meat:  [cute.JPG]

Nan HuaiLin asked: [Did Dragon Two drink milk as well?]

Fei Cheng replied: [Still not drinking, no matter how coaxed. It seems that we can only wait for you to come back to breastfeed.]

Nan HuaiLin: […]

Mr. Rabbit: [Don’t be shy. Feed and get used to it.]

Nan HuaiLin: […]

Mr. Rabbit: [You can practice with me first. I don’t mind.]

Nan HuaiLin: […]

Nan HuaiLin: [bye] [bye]

Mr. Rabbit: [kisses] [kisses]

Nan HuaiLin sighed.

Man Tianzhu asked, “What’s wrong?”

Nan HuaiLin smiled. “Nothing.”

At 9:30, the car was parked under MWK.

MWK, whose full name is Murphy-Will-Kairos Inc., was a well-known TV series production company that worked with all the major TV networks in the U.S. and had released a handful of hit series. Nan HuaiLin and Man Tianzhu were led all the way to a bright and spacious conference room, where the secretary smiled and said, “Please wait for a moment, Mr. Lowden will be right with you.”

Lowden again?

Was this surname so common in America? Just like the Chinese Li, Wang and Zhang?

Two minutes later, when Mr. Lowden, dressed in a suit, walked into the conference room, Nan HuaiLin was a little dumbfounded that this Mr. Lowden was, in fact, the same Will Lowden that he had a great conversation with at the restaurant last night.

“Hi, Nan.” Lowden smiled, and extended his hand. “Hello again.”

Nan HuaiLin shook his hand numbly. “Last night…Did you recognize me already?”

Lowden raised his eyebrows, and smiled, “Yes, but it was indeed a chance encounter last night. Please don’t misunderstand anything.”

Nan HuaiLin recovered quickly as usual, and smiled. “Why not. I had a nice chat with you last night.”

The secretary lady came in with coffee, and put a cup in front of each of them.

Lowden said, “Victoria, go get the contract.”

The secretary agreed, turned on her heels and went out. She soon came back, and put a contract in front of Nan HuaiLin and Lowden.

Nan HuaiLin froze. “Mr. Lowden, don’t you need an audition?”

Lowden said with a smile, “A week ago, I was fortunate enough to see the film My Father  in advance at Cannes. Your performance was excellent. I decided then, that you were the right man for the lead role in Beast. The chance encounter last night just reinforced my decision.”

So it was because of My Father that he was approached.

Since Lowden had already said there was no need for an audition, Nan HuaiLin shook off all his nerves and looked down at the contract.

There were only eight episodes of Beast, and each episode was worth $160,000, or about one million RMB.

“Mr. Lowden,” Nan HuaiLin said with a smile as he looked up. “Just an unrelated question. Is Princeton far from Atlantic City?”

Lowden said, “Atlantic City is also in New Jersey, about two hours from Princeton, I think.”

Nan HuaiLin nodded and asked, “How close?”

“It’s close,” Lowden said. “Less than an hour away.”

“Thanks.” Nan HuaiLin smiled, and said, “Can I borrow your pen?”

Lowden took the pen out of his suit pocket, and handed it to him as he casually asked, “Do you want to go to Atlantic City?”

Nan HuaiLin said as he signed the contract, “Yes, but not now.”

After Nan HuaiLin and Lowden signed both contracts, Lowden said, “In addition to the lead role in Beast, I’d like to invite you to act in a film, but I don’t know if your schedule will allow it.”

Nan HuaiLin looked at Man Tianzhu, who understood and said, “Since you said you were going to take a vacation, and you haven’t come across a suitable script, there is no other work in the second half of the year except for the promotion of My Father, The Shining You and a few commercials under negotiation.”

This was true, but Nan HuaiLin also had his own considerations.

He was pregnant right now, and his pregnancy was six months. That would be three months after Beast finished filming, so he only had three months left. Three months seemed a little tight for a film shoot.

Nan HuaiLin turned to Lowden, “What kind of film is it?”

“It’s a horror film,” Lowden said with a smile. “I think it will be very eye-catching to have an Oriental beauty like you in a blood spewing horror film.”

Horror, indeed, was a genre Nan HuaiLin was eager to try.

Man Tianzhu whispered in Chinese, “Although it’s a great thing to enter Hollywood, you have to be careful with your first film. A horror film can become a bad film if you’re not careful, so don’t say yes in a hurry.”

Nan HuaiLin nodded and said to Lowden, “No matter what type of film, the key to quality lies in the script, so it’s better to read the script first.”

“Agreed. We’ll talk more about the film later.” Lowden smiled and said, “By the way, how is Kairos doing lately?”

Nan HuaiLin hesitated. “Kairos…Who is that?”

Man Tianzhu hastened to remind him. “Fei Zheng’s English name is Kairos.”

Oh. First time I heard of it.

Wait a minute…

MWK also has Kairos in its name.

“Maybe…” Nan HuaiLin asked hesitantly. “Kairos is one of MWK’s bosses?”

“That’s right, but Kairos has been living in China all these years, so MWK has been managed by myself and Murphy, the other partner.” Lowden smiled and said. “I also learned when I read your profile that you are actually an actor in the company Kairos owns in China, which is just too much of a coincidence.”

It was indeed a coincidence.

Fei Cheng, that guy, knew he was auditioning for MWK, but hadn’t revealed that it was his brother’s company.

“Mr. Kairos is fine,” Nan HuaiLin replied to Lowden’s earlier question. “I’ll give him my regards when I get back to China.”

Lowden smiled and said, “Thank you. When are you going back to China?”

Nan HuaiLin said, “The flight is at five o’clock this afternoon.”

“That’s too bad,” Lowden said. “I was hoping to invite you to a party tonight.”

Nan HuaiLin smiled and said, “There will be a chance later.”

The audition, which had been full of tension, ended in a relaxed chat.

After leaving MWK with the signed contract, Man Tianzhu said, “I didn’t expect that Mr. Fei was one of the big bosses of MWK. My God, it’s like a Mary Sue novel’s boss persona.”

Nan HuaiLin was impressed. “That’s true.”

Man Tianzhu asked, “How do you feel about being the other half of the boss’s brother?”

Nan HuaiLin thought seriously about it. “Nothing. Sister Zhu, it’s still early. Let’s go to Times Square.”

“Yes, yes,” Man TianZhu said excitedly. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was filmed in Times Square!”

The two of them took a taxi to Times Square.

Nan HuaiLin originally wanted to call Fei Cheng to hold him accountable for his failure to report the news, but figured he would be asleep by now, so he didn’t. He planned to return to Beijing, and then punish him for his crimes.

Half an hour later, they arrived at Times Square.

Nan HuaiLin stood in the crowded “crossroads of the world,” looked at the huge electronic billboard on the Times Building, and suddenly his mood was so excited that he said to Man Tianzhu, “One day, I will definitely appear on this billboard!”

Man Tianzhu nodded vigorously, smiled, and said, “You will!”

She suddenly remembered something. “By the way, didn’t you say you wanted to do a benefit for your 20 million Weibo followers? I have an idea. How about a dance here? I’ll help you shoot.”

“Huh?” Nan HuaiLin was a bit scared. “Here? It’s too awkward with all the people, right?”

“Times Square often has people doing flash mobs and stuff. It’s fine.” Man Tianzhu had already taken out her phone and started to shoot, “Didn’t you learn a street dance when you shot The Shining You? So just dance.”

Nan HuaiLin clenched his teeth. “Okay, dance!”

Good grief, talk about fingers in pies! 😉😉😁
NHL will be expertly taken care of.
Plus, it was his talent and hard work, not connections, that secured him his acting parts.
Thanks for translating and editing.

Sorry but all I can think of is them eating Five Guys at 8 in the morning. The idea that Americans eat burgers 24/7 makes me laugh. No one is eating like that at breakfast time.

The part about Applebee’s was funny too. American cooking, yes, but one of the worst chain restaurants around! Eegads!

Man TianZhu is right: Fei Zheng really is a Mary Sue novel boss! Cold, domineering, wealthy, and a multi-national businessman. Now if he can only find someone to love…
