Zhao XueMei never could have expected for this trip to ChaoYang Street to end in such a disaster, and she didnāt even manage to see Old Man Yang. Those two brats she never spared a second glance turned out to have been hiding behind an unassuming demeanor all along.
With Xiao Xiao injured by that wolf in sheepās clothing, Zhao XueMeiās persistent grudge against Old Man Yang and this new hatred mingled together into one bitter mess, and the contempt in her heart swelled. If Old Man Yang hadnāt taken those two brats into his home, fed them and clothed them and kept them, how could something like this have happened?
On top of this loathing, Zhao XueMei recalled her glance inside the XiQin restaurant earlier, and only grew ever more convinced that Old Man Yang was filching money under the table and keeping them in the dark. She had no idea how much money he had kept hidden from them over the years, and yet he wouldnāt even give them one old and worn down restaurant.
Thinking this over, she became ever more convinced that her guess was correct.
After a moment, Zhao XueMei grit her teeth and helped Yang Xiao up.
āIām not through with the two of you yet!ā She spat.
āMom, letās just go back. Letās forget about the house, Grandpa has made up his mind not to give it to us anyway.ā
āForget about the house?ā Zhao XueMei sneered. āFine, but even if I forget about the house, I will never forget this grudge. I refuse to let those two bastard brats go unscathed!ā
Yang Xiao just thought that his mother was spitting venom in midst of an angry rage, and failed to catch the clear, burning look in her eyes.
That aside, Shen Fu on the other hand caught up to Lin ShuYi in a few large steps, only to find Lin ShuYi already staring at him.
Shen Fu was immediately cautious. āWhatās wrong? Why are you staring at me? Donāt tell me youāre going to start lecturing me. I really didnāt raise a hand against him, only a foot. That shouldnāt count as a fight, right?ā
āDid you get hurt?ā
Shen Fu was surprised for a moment, then burst out a grin. āDo I look like someone who could be hurt by that?ā
Lin ShuYi laughed. āNo.ā
Surprised again, Shen Fu quickly straightened out his face. āDonāt laugh!ā
Though much effort, Lin ShuYi had tried to move on and give Shen Fu some face, but then Shen Fu said this. Lin ShuYi looked at him for a moment, then turned around and left.
Shen Fu stood in place for a long moment. Grinding his teeth in frustration, he mumbled ā… I almost couldnāt hold back.ā
Eventually, the two of them returned to the XiQin restaurant together. Old Man Yang hadnāt lied down to rest that long ago, but he was already up, sitting at a table. Xiao Wan sat across from him. Old Man Yangās back was facing them and his face obscured, so it was unclear what they were talking about.
āXiao Yi gege! Xiao Fu gege!ā Xiao Wanās sharp eyes spotted the two of them as soon as they stepped inside the restaurant, and she called out enthusiastically. Old Man Yang turned around as well.
The customers who had been eating inside the restaurant earlier when Zhao XueMei and her son arrived were already gone, replaced by a new batch of customers. Naturally, no one currently in the shop was aware of the event that just occured. Old Man Yang greeted the two of them happily. āXiao Wanās grandmother sent over some pig trotters, come and eat!ā
Seeing that Old Man Yang didnāt seem like he was aware of anything that just occured, Lin ShuYi finally relaxed.
What he did not expect was for Shen Fu to open his mouth and immediately say, āYang Xiao and his mother just came by.ā
ā…ā Lin ShuYi whipped his head around to glare at Shen Fu.
Old Man Yangās expression changed slightly. He said, āThey came again? Didnāt cause any trouble, did they?ā
Shen Fu shook his head. They didnāt cause any trouble, despite their original intention to do so.
āI taught Yang Xiao a bit of a lesson. I hope grandpa wonāt be angry with me.ā
ā…ā Silence from both Lin ShuYi and Xiao Wan.
Old Man Yang really didnāt expect Shen Fu to just lay everything out like that, straight to the point. He smiled softly. āItās alright. Yang Xiao that child, with that attitude, he really needs a lesson or two. All he knows is how to rely on his parents and cause trouble. Itās alright, grandpa isnāt angry. I know that you would never go too far.ā
Shen Fu smiled warmly.
Old Man Yang gazed out into the distance for a long moment. He sighed, and then began speaking. āWhen JianGuo was just a small child, his mother passed away. I was too busy earning money to care for him, so he grew up with his grandmother. I was constantly away, only seeing him a few times a year, but I always told myself that it was all for him. All that time away, all that effort making money, it was all to support JianGuo. I thought that even if I wasnāt be his side, it was alright. It wasnāt something I could help.
āIt was only much later when one day I came home to see him standing outside the front door. He was so timid, so scared calling out to me, worn down by years of his grandmotherās harsh scoldings and iron grip, but I realised my mistakes too late. His cowardly temperament forged during childhood was already set in stone.
āLater, when he was going to marry Zhao XueMei, I knew it wasnāt right. I was never on board with it. XueMei that girl, she had a powerful personality. With JianGuoās soft temperament, he was bound to play in the palm of her hand for the rest of his life. But there was nothing I could do. JianGuo loved her, and I tried to convince myself that maybe such a strong personality would be alright, at least JianGuo wouldnāt be bullied by others after I was goneā¦
āSometime I still think to myself, this is all my fault. This is all because of my independent, do everything myself attitude. Itās all my fault that my family ended up like this. The Heavens are punishing me for neglecting my son, itās all because I never raised him properly that everything ended up like this.ā
It took a moment for Lin ShuYi, Shen Fu, and Xiao Wan to react. Old Man Yang was only reminiscing, heād always blamed himself, resting all the weight of the responsibilities onto his own shoulders, trying to make the harshness of reality more bearable on his heart.
Letting all this out now, something must have been the trigger. He must have an idea of some kind in his head.
Lin ShuYi couldnāt find any words ot say, so instead he walked over, resting his hands on Old Man Yangās thin, stooped shoulders. Meanwhile, he threw Shen Fu a pleading glance, urging him to take on Old Man Yang. Talking was Shen Fuās speciality after all.
Shen Fu took a deep breath. āGrandpa, how could this all be your fault? Everyone is responsible for their own choices.ā
Old Man Yang straightened up, and rubbed his eyes. āForget it, you donāt need to say anything. People just tend to think about the past when they get old, thatās all.ā
Truthfully, Old Man Yang wasnāt looking for comfort. He was just venting the dark depressing feelings clouding his chest so he could make a decision with a clear mind.
āEnough, enough. If they want to come, then let them come. Xiao Fu, you donāt need to stop them. If they want to talk properly, Iāll pour them a cup of tea and invite them in for a seat. If they donāt want to talk properly, then it wouldnāt be difficult to ask them to leave.ā
Listening to him talk, it didnāt sound like the way someone who speak of their close family at all.
Shen Fu and Lin ShuYi both understood what Old Man Yang meant, but Xiao Wan was still confused. She didnāt quite grasp who Old Man Yang was talking about or what had just happened.
After going home, she relayed the dayās events to her grandmother, and this conversation. Her grandmother understood immediately and laughed. āWell done! A grandson and daughter-in-law like these two need to learn that their ascendants werenāt born to owe them. For a parent, whatās the difference between having unfilial parents versus having a chunk of barbequed pork!ā
Her laughter ceded, and Xiao Wanās grandmother sighed. āIām afraid that with the kind of person Old Man Yang is, a decision like this could only have come after countless sleepless nights. Ah, having such a spineless son and ferocious daughter-in-law, how unlucky he is.ā
Xiao Wan finally understood the situation a bit, and snuggled close to her grandmother, taking her arm and tugging at it like a small child. āSee, our family is the best after all! Mom always takes care of you, and dad respects you too. And not to mention me, I love grandma the most!ā
Xiao Wanās grandmother finally couldnāt help but smile, reaching forward to boop Xiao Wanās nose. āOf course, only youāre the sweetest!ā
When Zhao XueMei and Yang Xiao finally returned home, Yang JianGuo was in middle of cooking gyoza. Upon seeing Yang Xiao limping, leaning on his mother for support, Yang JianGuoās expression changed immediately. āWhat happened? Where did the two of you go?ā
Zhao XueMei hadnāt expected Yang JianGuo to be home. She was still pent up from the scene earlier, full of hot air with nowhere to vent, so she vented it all on Yang JianGuo. āWhere did we go? What happened? Ha, you still have the nerve to ask! This disaster is all because of that father of yours!ā
With Zhao XueMei seemingly dragging his father through the mud for her own misfortunes again, Yang JianGuoās expression turned dark. āAll you need to do is tell me what happened. Why bring up my father for no reason?ā
The fury in Zhao XueMeiās gut burned hotter as she realised Yang JianGuo had just spoken back to her. She pulled Yang Xiaoās shirt up violently, revealing the bruises on his stomach. āNo reason? This was done by those two bastard kids under your fatherās wing, and you still dare say I have no reason?!ā
Yang JianGuo suddenly understood. Zhao XueMei and Yang Xiao had gone to find his father again. Behind his back. āYou went to find my dad again?ā
Zhao XueMei scowled at him āWe did. So what!?ā
Yang JianGuoās face was flushing bright red. āMy father already said that he wouldnāt sell the house. Why wonāt you just let this matter go?ā
Zhao XueMeiās voice rose an octave. āI wonāt let this matter go! So what? Itās just some trashy old house and heās treating it like some treasure. I understand, Yang JianGuo, youāre taking all your own issues out on me, arenāt you? Xiao Xiao was attacked by someone and you havenāt even speared him a single glance, yet youāre interrogating me about visiting your dad? Fine, Iāll tell you! I did go ask for the house again. What are you going to do about it, huh?!ā
Yang JianGuoās voice rose as well. āXiao Xiao this, Xiao Xiao that, as if he hasnāt been spoiled by you enough! With his personality, heād never make it out in the world by himself!ā
With these words, Yang Xiaoās face darkened too.
In their entire relationship, Yang JianGuo had never talked back to Zhao XueMei as much as he had today, and to say something like this at that. Zhao XueMei was so furious she was shaking. Jerking forward, she slapped Yang JianGuo and screamed, āI spoiled him? Xiao Xiao is so big already, but have you ever even cared about him? All you care about is your father! What a shame you father never cared about you! Heād even leave that old house to two of his bastards rather than leave it to you!ā
āZhao XueMei, what did you say?!ā At Zhao XueMeiās sudden topic, Yang JianGuo grew truly furious, but Zhao XueMei didnāt care at all.
āWhat did I say? Iāll say it again! Bastards, bastards, bastards! Those two brats are just some bastards your father sired with god knows who. Calling them orphaned children, what a joke! Countless orphans on this earth, yet I donāt see your father going around taking in and raising all of them. Since those two brats appeared, you father has been bending over backwards coddling them. If they arenāt his bastards, than what are they?! And god knows what whore he fucked to makeāā
Smack!
Before Zhao XueMeiās words even finished, the back of Yang JianGuoās hand slammed into her face so hard her entire body twisted to the side. Her ears were left ringing. Zhao XueMeiās eyes were wide, and she was frozen for what seemed like an eternity.
Yang JianGuo also didnāt expect something like that to have come from him. His hand was still frozen in midair, numb from the impact, and he stood shaking in righteous fury. For the first time in his life, he reacted on instinct, unhindered by anxiety.
Zhao XueMeiās cheek went from numb, to tingling, to burning, and a bead of blood formed at the corner of her lips. The taste of copper lit her tongue, and as if something snapped in her, she finally reacted. Hair a mess, eyes wild like a madmanās, she threw herself at Yang JianGuo. āYang JianGuo! You dare hit me?! Iām going to make you regret living!ā
The shock of seeing these two people wrestling on the floor jump started Yang Xiaoās psyche. His father⦠hit his mother? If this was sometime in the past, such a thing would have been unimaginable.
What the hell was going on? How come that ever since visiting grandpa that first time, his family seemed to have been shattering like cracked ice, fissures still spreading?
Yang Xiao narrowed his eyes, and finally, a thread of hatred towards his grandfather began to coalesce in his heart.

The main reason a man should never hit a woman is that it will be grounds for a lawsuit or imprisonment. It is better to walk away and ignore her if she is saying or doing abusive things. In this scenario, the act of the slap drew blood and it was not done out of self-defense but frustrated anger. He was wrong to let it get to him that far. He could have verbally put her in her place and walked away from such a vile woman.
You can say she deserved being slapped but a man, who is unequivocally stronger than a woman, should never raise a hand agaibst a woman. Even the son knew he did wrong the moment he hit her. If I were him, upon seeing how she provoked the worst thing out of him, I would divorce her. That woman lost his respect and that should be the last straw.
Besides, who is she to demand that his father sell his business and home to her benefit? She is shameless!
yea, but the father seemed to be pretty abused by the mother. you can’t really blame the person after what she’s done. it’s not right, but then again, many people wouldn’t keep calm either. especially if they had been bottling their anger just like him and had the only other family member slandered just like how grandpa was. its not easy being calm when attacked like this
definitely agree tho, he needs to go and leave this woman. at some point i wish she would be arrested for something and leave Shen Fu and Lin Shuyi alone
I agree with your comment as a woman. But some women with such poisonous mouths and hearts you can’t help but want them to get a beating
The woman slapped his face too and no one think her wrong.
I know this is not an excuse but this is some bottled anger and depression that burst out so he reflect slap her.
I mean wear his shoe being abused and slaved in marriage then she tell your father (the only parents around) that he is f*cking some wh*res.
You can say if i were him i ‘m gonna be blablabla but when you put in real situation not when you have a clear head and emotion, it’s different story
Biatch, in my family everyone preferred being spanked by my dad because he wasnāt nearly as strong as my mom when he swung full force. My mom has a painful swing when it comes down to it.
that was just a mere for a slutty woman like her duh š
That woman wanted the house first, and now she also wants the restaurant?! Sheās incredible! How selfish and greedy!
Thanks for the chapter!
She slapped him, he slapped her, not a tit for tat but as he said it, instinctual. Even so that is not an excuse for his behaviour. Nor is it an excuse for hers. Her using violence is no different.
It saddens me that Grandpa is the one that is going to be loosing out in the end no matter which way this blows. I hope the boys come out of this unscathed also.
thank you for the chapter
ā¦ā¦..Iām worried for Gramps now. I thought of this when I was first reading about them and I thought about it again as I read the chapter where the neighbors and many others witnessed the scene of that person and the little prick causing a scene over the house, and I hope Iām wrong! Ummā¦ā¦the authorities arenāt going to get involved, right?
If they get involved, as much as things would be settled, somethings would also come to light. Like how Xiao Yi is living alone in that house with Shen fu and not paying anything. Shen Fuās identity being revealed even though he doesnāt want it to be known. How Xiao Yi is an Orphan. Or how heās 18 and has no known education. I donāt think this matters unless the authorities do get involved, but all we know is that Xiao Yi woke up in a house that was barren except for a few things. We donāt know if he owns it or if the previous owner of Xiao Yiās new body was living there illegally. He was ascholar in his past life, so I can see him being fine in stuff like math and I donāt think theyāll give him hell for being on his own at 18 but stillā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..Iām worried for him and Shen Fu⦠that little prick has proven to be impulsive so I wouldnāt exactly put it past him to do something if he got riled up enoughā¦.
Thank You for the Translation Guys!!
Good people would blame theirselves for the misfortune they face, but bad people would seek and blame others for their own misfortune.
A short-sighted, manipulative, & direspectful wife will definitely only cause trouble if the husband wants to straighten her up.
Man… That zao xuemei is taking this too far… If i were yang jianguo i would have slap a divorcement paper in front of her!
And yang xiao what qualification you have to hate your grandpa?!?! (ļ¼ļ棊ļæ£ļ¼
Also thanks for the chapter~~
( Ė Ā³Ė)ā„
Yang Jianguo finally takes a side!! I canāt believe the day has come!!
Thank you for the chapter!!!
Honesty this family makes me so mad
Beware guys. I don’t know the situation in another part of world but yes there are many asian moms such as that one, well, the one who’s so dramatic like that is rare but the close ones are many.
*Sigh
i hope Yang Xiao doesnt do something stupid like trying to murder his grandpa or burn the house… and Yang Dad, GO! slap her again for good measure, leave that house, divorce that monster and live with ur dad!
Thank you for the chapter! How dare that woman… I hope this fight will be over soon and that woman along with her son disappears.
Sigh this family is ridiculous…they should just get a divorce already…
As an adult woman, of course I’m against any form of violence happen to both gender, especially the women. I believed that Old Yang’s son should have just leave the house rather than hitting her (although deep inside she does deserved that slap)and get a divorce. Come on, how could you love someone who have been countlessly trampled on your pride as a man and keep on insulting your family. No one has the right to do that against someone else.
Yang Xiao….there’s something wrong with your brain’s connections there. Were you taught wrong as a joke?
But you hit him first…
I wish the recipe for the soup was in here š
AHHHH I HATE THEM SO MUCHHHHHHH
Ngl I’m kind of bothered how everyone glosses over how the mother is extremely emotionally and verbally abusive towards her husband but jumps to admonish the husband for slapping back when he just got slapped. After being stuck for pretty much all his life in abusive households, I’m not surprised that YJG is about to snap. I’m not saying that it was right for YJG to slap his wife, but it’s very clear that it was kinda well-deserved
…Divorce isn’t as easy as people make it out to be, no way in hell the woman would agree to it considering the son is her only source of income no matter how little the amount….
Thanks for the chapter ~~āāā
sigh.. family.. each of their own stories..
furthermore.. Shen Fu already in tanter hooks with ShuYi.. he just needs another trigger~?
jianguo my guy get outta there š¬š¬š¬ we wanted a faceslapping and we got one š¬š¬š¬ on one hand violence is not the answer. on the other hand ā and this is me being biased due to my experiences with stuff like this ā i cant help but see this as a man finally standing up against an abusive figure, especially w the context of his grandmother
