What is something that catches your eye/keeps you reading a story? Character, plot, dialog, or other? Examples welcome.

Addis’ Answer: Definitely plot! I have continued to read some crappy novels where I absolutely hate the characters just to see where the plot is going.

  1. For me me plot. Because for this particular genre I’ve only got a narrow field to choose from. As a person new to East Asian cultures like Chinese, Japanese, and Korean a universal thirty emerges, and a good story will stand the test of translation.

  2. One of my fav authors, Neil Gaiman once wrote: ‘ “and then, what happened?” Those words, I think are the most important words there are for story tellers.”
The same applies to readers, I think, to know what is happening next is what keep me reading a story.

  3. It’s both plot and dialogue, for me.
The dialogue makes the character, in my mind, so they are linked together that way. Whether a goodie or a villain, what they say can make all the difference.
I have been pulled into a story where the plot didn’t exactly grab me, but the opening scene and dialogue did.
Home of the Zerg is a good example.
Sometimes, though, I’ve stuck with a plot and regretted it; Cute Beast Store Nr 138, springs to mind.

  4. plot and character for me~ if it’s a bad plot, it’s fine as long as there’s good characters and vice versa~
but I usually judge if I want to read something by the synopsis. unfortunately, lots of stories I found have feally bad synopsis so sometimes I have to waste time reading a few chapters just to see if they’re worth reading…

  5. I will go with plot. If a plot is good then you would be interested to learn how it’s going. It increases your curiosity. But bland characters with a good plot is not appreciative.

  6. Humor and plot, for sure.
It can be the most well written thing ever, but if it’s too serious, I can’t keep up with it. It’ll make my heart tired.
Likewise, if it’s all humor with little to no plot, just one liners and slap stick, I will lose interest pretty quickly.
    But when they’re combined beautifully…. *Chef’s kiss* šŸ’‹
