Do you wonder about the meaning of the character names and if there is significance to the specific characters in their names?
Addis: It’s why I try to add notes for names
Rara: For my culture name meaning is very important, my real name can mean beauty….I guess my parents named me wrong
Yun: Generally speaking cuz it’s character by character based, which character you use means a lot. After all you can have multiple characters for the same sound. People for Chinese usually spend a lot of time coming up with meaning behind names
Rara: My sis is marrying a singaporean chinese. There was a talk abt what name should they name their child, that can be use as english name and chinese name in a clever (puny) way
Gaeatiamat: I know when I write my stories, I take a long time to pick names, and I look at the meanings, then say them out loud and other things to make sure they fit right. Of course I also make it easy on myself by trying to find names that would work for two 13th Century lowland Scottish characters. And one of them reincarnates 10 times into the future so what name would he pick for himself then? Just cause I’m insane.
yes! like people said, name describes a person.
or at least the hope of their parents to the child.
sometimes i would find a character says, “you’re just like your name. simple and straightforward.” well, something around that line.
i also really like your notes about the characters’ names in gdc and their meanings.
I’ve always been fascinated by names & enjoy learning about them. My name doesn’t have an actual meaning in itself but it has history. Finding out the significance of names in the stories is always an appreciated bonus.
I enjoy when the team answers.
As meanings are significant, it is nice to know what they are. I came to these novels late and have absolutely no understanding of Chinese characters at all, but have learned a lot about how complex an alphabet it is. So, for someone like me, if not provided, I’d be clueless.
It seems more relevant in xanxia or period novels, where I imagine the significance would add more weight to a character.
My name means “God of plenty” or “Oath of God”.
I do
Yes! Sometimes the name is a red herring in how the story will go. Or it’s part of some hidden strength in a character. There are just times it adversely or positively affects them. I like knowing the meaning of a name whether it’s in stories or not.
A name may not have some huge cultural meaning, but have significance to a certain person, and it is nice to know the origin. Whether someone just thought the name was nice or you ha e 5 generations behind you. It’s wonderful to know.
Yes! Especially in chinese cause it means a lot!
